00:00:00
hi there I've just started to build this
00:00:03
ugly stick it's a 16 inch wingspan and
00:00:05
it's got 17 ribs now the ribs are all
00:00:09
essentially the same size but there's
00:00:11
three different variations that are
00:00:13
shown on the plan and what I thought I'd
00:00:15
do is a quick video showing how I
00:00:18
produce identical ribs and introducing
00:00:22
the variations that are needed for this
00:00:25
build first thing we need to do is take
00:00:27
a look at the ribs themselves okay so as
00:00:30
I said we've got the three ribs which
00:00:33
are all essentially the same size they
00:00:35
have the same exactly the same profile
00:00:38
the only variation comes within the
00:00:40
thickness on this pattern here we need
00:00:44
some 1 eights 3 mil or quarter-inch 6 6
00:00:50
point 4 mil or on these we need quarter
00:00:55
inch quarter inch and we need someone
00:00:59
eights on that one the other variation
00:01:02
as well as the thickness is to do with
00:01:05
the slots for the spruce spars on these
00:01:08
outer portion ribs on the X portions of
00:01:13
the wings these ribs you have a single
00:01:15
spruce bar top and bottom on the more
00:01:19
central ones you have a doubler as well
00:01:23
so it's twice as thick the portion that
00:01:25
you need to take out so what we're going
00:01:28
to do is we're going to produce 17
00:01:30
identical ribs of different thicknesses
00:01:33
and then we're going to cut out the
00:01:35
slots that we need
00:01:38
ok so I've chosen a single rib off the
00:01:40
plan and I've cut that out stuck it to
00:01:43
some three mil plywood and cut cutting
00:01:46
out and the one I chose has got the the
00:01:52
the markings for where the doubler goes
00:01:54
as well as the the main spruce part so
00:01:58
it shows the double width and what I've
00:02:00
done is I've cut out the 3/16 for the
00:02:05
sparse for front spars they're nice and
00:02:08
tight fit
00:02:12
I've also cut out the slot that
00:02:15
accommodates the Spruce sparse there we
00:02:20
go
00:02:22
and eventually as I said that I will
00:02:26
need to cut that out to accommodate the
00:02:28
doubler but for now just that what I've
00:02:33
done there is I've drawn around that on
00:02:35
a piece of plywood cut it out fairly
00:02:38
roughly oversize to produce a second
00:02:43
identical rib what I'm now doing is
00:02:46
bolting this together okay I've now
00:02:57
bolted those together and I've got this
00:02:59
oversized rib on the back bolted
00:03:01
together with two mill bolts you'll hear
00:03:05
me mixing my units mainly because the
00:03:09
plans are in imperial and everything I
00:03:11
get where I live is in metric whether
00:03:14
it's bolts to mill bolts three mill ply
00:03:16
or spruce six mill spruce bars so I'm
00:03:23
needing to kind of work and convert
00:03:25
between the two anyway so the next job
00:03:28
is I'm going to send this to size so
00:03:34
that this bigger one is identical to the
00:03:39
one that I've already made I'm then
00:03:41
going to cut out the slots in an
00:03:42
identical location and so I've got my
00:03:45
two identical ribs
00:03:50
[Applause]
00:03:52
okay well I'm now cutting roughly around
00:03:56
the ribs with a sharp exacto knife just
00:04:02
I mean the closer you go to this the
00:04:04
less you'll have to sand off in the end
00:04:07
but the more chance you've got of making
00:04:12
a mistake I would prefer to leave a
00:04:15
decent amount of balsa to sand off
00:04:18
afterwards because at the end of the day
00:04:22
it's a really simple process sending
00:04:24
balsa so right so there we go we've got
00:04:29
that got that template and I've got my
00:04:35
other templates here I've got five of
00:04:39
the quarter mil and I've got I should
00:04:43
have twelve twelve of the three milk all
00:04:50
the three sixteen so the next job with
00:04:56
these is to make a sandwich and I'm
00:04:59
going to bolt them all together using
00:05:01
these just this threaded rod and some
00:05:05
nuts and washers and with the plywood
00:05:10
either side like that and then we'll
00:05:15
send them together now the first time I
00:05:21
ever tried to do this I tried to drill
00:05:23
all the way through and expect it to
00:05:25
come out in the right place and have
00:05:27
everything lined up which didn't work
00:05:28
very well if you've got a drill press
00:05:30
and you can set them up nicely then yeah
00:05:33
you could probably do that I'm going to
00:05:35
take a slightly slower approach and I am
00:05:40
going to drill each one individually
00:05:43
I've marked on this rib which hasn't got
00:05:46
a template at the top because it's
00:05:49
important to know which is the top
00:05:51
because they are not symmetrical so I'm
00:05:57
placing the rib
00:06:02
over this balsa one I'm drilling a hole
00:06:09
making sure to leave enough clear space
00:06:12
around and I pushing my two long
00:06:25
threaded pieces of long threaded rod
00:06:29
through keeping that a nice tight fit
00:06:33
right so we'll put that there and top up
00:06:38
now do the next one like I say it's a
00:06:47
bit longer than doing it with that and a
00:06:50
drill press if you've got one but I like
00:06:54
this approach because I just feel it I
00:06:58
can make sure that it's correct now this
00:07:01
is the top that's the top so it goes on
00:07:06
that way if we end up getting one the
00:07:10
wrong way around when we come to do the
00:07:13
sanding it you'll probably have one that
00:07:17
doesn't fit there we go okay well I now
00:07:25
have my my balsa sandwich I've drilled
00:07:29
them all individually and and put them
00:07:33
onto these threaded rods I do find that
00:07:36
doing it individually okay it takes a
00:07:38
little bit more time it probably took me
00:07:40
10 minutes but I find it's a lot more
00:07:43
accurate and I get better results than
00:07:46
trying to to do a number of different
00:07:50
ones now I haven't put these in any old order
00:07:53
I put them in a specific order all these
00:07:57
ones at this end including these two
00:08:02
quarter inch or six point four mil here
00:08:05
so up to that point they're always have
00:08:10
that size slot for the single
00:08:13
the single spar width from there onwards
00:08:18
so this lot I will need to cut out that
00:08:21
again to make it thick enough for the
00:08:23
double spar
00:08:24
so I'm going to sand these two shape now
00:08:27
I just need to make sure it's all square
00:08:29
tighten it up I'm going to sand these
00:08:31
two shape I might use a knife just to
00:08:33
take off the the odd high bit first and
00:08:37
then I'm going to cut this slot through
00:08:40
all of them using my razor saw so that
00:08:43
the so that the spa fits through all of
00:08:47
them nicely and same there and there's
00:08:52
ten mil balsa to go in the front or 3/8
00:08:56
square and then once I've done that I'm
00:08:59
going to take off these these first few
00:09:02
ribs up to that point which are then
00:09:05
finished and I will clamp this back up
00:09:07
in the sandwich and I will cut out that
00:09:10
to the thicker dimension so I'll get on
00:09:12
and do that now and we'll come back in a
00:09:14
bit I thought I'd say just a quick word
00:09:17
on how I'm getting these down to size
00:09:20
initially I'm using my David plane which
00:09:25
is ideal for this and if you do it at an
00:09:27
angle like that it'll pick up the
00:09:31
plywood either side so I'm getting the
00:09:34
gross shape using the plane these baby
00:09:41
planes are fantastic if you check out my
00:09:44
playlist on my youtube channel you'll
00:09:48
see I've done a review of these but once
00:09:53
I've got down close I don't want to go
00:09:57
too close because I might end up taking
00:09:59
off some of the plywood I will then be
00:10:01
going across and sanding like this to do
00:10:05
the final
00:10:07
the final shaping so okay but I've spent
00:10:12
quite a lot of time now sanding these
00:10:14
seventeen blanks that I've got
00:10:17
sandwiched between my two plywood
00:10:19
templates three mil plywood templates
00:10:22
and it's it's really rewarding when you
00:10:26
get this lovely smooth finish it's it's
00:10:30
it's a really nice a nice job it's
00:10:32
create scarred work but it's nice at the
00:10:35
end here where it steps down to take
00:10:38
some sheeting at the trailing edge I
00:10:40
just check that correct depth so that
00:10:45
fits nice and smooth there
00:10:47
the initial edge of that I just did a
00:10:51
cut with my razor saw first to get a
00:10:53
nice straight edge this is a 42 42 teeth
00:10:58
per inch saw so that's that's nice to do
00:11:02
and the we've got the the slots for the
00:11:07
central spruce spars and we've got five
00:11:10
mil or 3/16 boss wood Sparsit go in the
00:11:14
front and to do those I just prop it on
00:11:17
a piece of scrap balsa wood and I run my
00:11:21
saw down either side of the either side
00:11:25
of the slot and then I won't try and
00:11:28
take this out now while they're all
00:11:29
sandwiched together I will once I've
00:11:32
taken this apart
00:11:33
I will individually go and just Nick out
00:11:36
Nick out that with a sharp scalpel and
00:11:39
that will that will come out quite
00:11:40
nicely these should be quite a tight fit
00:11:45
it's the way I made it with the template
00:11:47
and they may need just the slight
00:11:50
sanding or a slight shave taken off but
00:11:52
I I'd rather make them slightly tight
00:11:55
then end up with them being a bit loose
00:11:57
because then they're they're no good to
00:11:58
anybody this is probably the hardest cut
00:12:02
in the front of the front of the rib
00:12:06
which takes the the 10 mil leading edge
00:12:11
mainly because okay you can prop it up
00:12:13
and you can hold it but it's quite hard
00:12:15
to get to get that angle right so I I
00:12:17
cut it quite generously and
00:12:19
just sanded it to shape so so I as I
00:12:24
said previously I've got my seventeen
00:12:26
blanks in the middle although not really
00:12:29
looking like blanks anymore
00:12:30
and ten of those are more or less
00:12:36
finished once I've taken out these these
00:12:38
pieces but there's seven which I will
00:12:41
then need to cut out with my razor sore
00:12:45
again to take this this doubler that
00:12:48
goes on there on the spruce central
00:12:50
spars so just to wrap this video up the
00:12:56
the ribs are not symmetrical so as I
00:12:59
take them off I put a to to indicate the
00:13:02
top and as I said previously I'm just
00:13:06
going to use my scalpel
00:13:07
just to Nick out these there we go that
00:13:15
is probably a little bit too tight so I
00:13:20
will just take off the little shading
00:13:24
off the back edge and as long as I'm
00:13:26
consistent
00:13:27
rather than taking some off the backs
00:13:30
some off the front I can then fine tune
00:13:35
each rib to make sure it's a perfect fit
00:13:40
so that's how I make seventeen
00:13:43
individual ribs identical and I'm not
00:13:46
saying this is how you should do it I'm
00:13:49
not saying this is the best way of doing
00:13:51
it it's just the method that works for
00:13:53
me that I quite like there's lots of
00:13:55
ways of making ribs but I just thought
00:13:57
I'd share with you how I things what I
00:14:00
think is a good idea

Description:

A short video showing how I make 17 identical ribs for my radio controlled balsa aeroplane, a Das Ugly Stik. I appreciate this nothing new, but thought some may find it interesting and useful, its a great technique that works well for me. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGILJsUw3dvRV_vh2MAe0VBraPhvk7KEQ Below is a link to further build videos of my Das Ugly Stik, please follow and I hope you will enjoy - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGILJsUw3dvRV_vh2MAe0VBraPhvk7KEQ
