00:00:01
by far the best way to create harmonies
00:00:03
in your song or track that you're
00:00:04
working on is to have the singer
00:00:06
go ahead and do several passes and do as
00:00:08
many takes
00:00:09
um to get them just right and sounding
00:00:12
clean
00:00:13
but we don't always have that luxury and
00:00:14
if you have a situation where you don't
00:00:16
have access to the singer
00:00:17
you can't re-record and add the
00:00:20
harmonies
00:00:21
we do have a few tools that we can make
00:00:22
use of um
00:00:24
within studio one and these can also be
00:00:27
useful if you're working on
00:00:28
electronic or experimental music and you
00:00:30
want to
00:00:31
try out some experimentation
00:00:34
with harmonies then you can use these
00:00:36
tools for that as well
00:00:38
so let's go ahead and get started and
00:00:40
take a look at these
00:00:41
now i've got a cheesy vocal recording
00:00:45
here on this one track so let's play
00:00:47
that back to hear how it sounds
00:00:58
okay so uh let's add
00:01:01
some harmonies to this now the first
00:01:03
thing you'll want to do is right click
00:01:05
in the track column on that track and
00:01:07
choose duplicate track
00:01:09
complete be sure that you choose that
00:01:11
and then let's right click on that
00:01:13
second one
00:01:14
and duplicate that complete as well
00:01:17
now when you right click on an event on
00:01:20
audio event we can see we have a
00:01:21
transpose
00:01:22
and we can use this to raise
00:01:26
the pitch of our sample in semitones but
00:01:28
i'm going to
00:01:29
use the inspector and this is
00:01:32
essentially the same transpose setting
00:01:34
as we saw in the contextual menu
00:01:37
let's select the second one and for this
00:01:39
i'm going to
00:01:40
click once and put in four to raise that
00:01:43
up by four semitones
00:01:45
let's select the third one and for this
00:01:48
i'm going to put in minus three i'll
00:01:52
press enter now let's play these back and hear
00:01:55
how they sound
00:02:06
okay so they don't sound that great
00:02:07
first of all we do have some clippings
00:02:09
so i'm gonna f3
00:02:10
and open up the console i'm gonna hold
00:02:13
shift and select this first one
00:02:15
and then pull these down just a little
00:02:17
bit
00:02:19
now the first thing that you want to do
00:02:22
is take a look at the time
00:02:24
stretch setting and that would be here
00:02:27
by default this is going to be set to
00:02:29
drums so that's part of the reason why
00:02:31
they sound so bad let's change that to
00:02:35
pro monophonic formant which i think
00:02:38
should work best in this
00:02:40
with this particular audio recording
00:02:42
we'll select the third one
00:02:43
and let's change that from drums to the
00:02:47
monophonic as well then let's listen
00:02:49
back to this again
00:02:59
[Music]
00:03:01
okay so it's a little bit better now
00:03:03
most of the time when we're
00:03:04
working with vocals in our track we're
00:03:07
not going to leave them dry we'll apply
00:03:09
some sort of processing to that usually
00:03:11
a touch of reverb or a lot of reverb
00:03:13
so this is something else that we can
00:03:15
use to help the sound a bit better
00:03:17
so let's close out the inspector and i
00:03:20
will f3 to open up the console now i'm going
00:03:23
to right click
00:03:24
in the empty space here and choose to
00:03:26
add an effects channel
00:03:28
and on this effects channel let's click
00:03:30
on the plus
00:03:31
to add a room reverb
00:03:35
and let's take them to church on this
00:03:36
one so we'll choose
00:03:38
church we can close that out now
00:03:42
and let's come to the send section of
00:03:45
our three vocal tracks and choose to send
00:03:47
that to effects one
00:03:49
that i just created
00:03:52
so now these are all being processed by
00:03:55
our room reverb which is on the church
00:03:57
setting let's play this back and listen
00:03:59
to this
00:04:08
[Music]
00:04:09
okay so now we can really play with some
00:04:12
of these faders and
00:04:14
get this to sound a little bit better so
00:04:17
you can use the
00:04:18
fader for your effects channel to adjust
00:04:20
how much of that reverb you want in
00:04:22
there you can also use the sends up above the
00:04:25
send levels
00:04:26
maybe you don't want your the main
00:04:29
and original vocal maybe you don't want
00:04:32
that to have so much reverb on that
00:04:33
up it could be a little bit more dry but
00:04:36
these are the ones that are kind of
00:04:37
processed with the transposing tool
00:04:39
maybe we want to add a little bit of
00:04:41
reverb to help those
00:04:43
to soften them up a little bit and take
00:04:44
away some of that mechanical sound
00:04:47
and also we could take the levels down
00:04:50
for these two
00:04:51
a little bit so just experiment with the
00:04:54
faders the levels for each of your
00:04:58
harmonies and also the send level to try
00:05:01
to achieve the sound and a better quality
00:05:03
so let's listen
00:05:04
back to this
00:05:36
hey
00:05:38
okay so this isn't perfect but with a
00:05:40
bit of experimentation with the levels
00:05:42
and trying
00:05:43
you could also try out different uh
00:05:45
spaces for your reverb
00:05:47
try out different reverbs maybe if you
00:05:49
have third party
00:05:51
and uh again if you're in a jam this can
00:05:54
be something that may work for you
00:05:56
and a lot of it has to do on the
00:05:57
particular recording that you have
00:05:59
and how it's sung what the melody is how
00:06:02
much vibrato and everything so this may
00:06:04
work with some audio material better than
00:06:07
others and you can even try this with
00:06:09
instruments that are playing a melody as
00:06:11
well
00:06:13
so let's take a look at the second
00:06:14
method and i think this one should be a
00:06:16
bit better quality i'm going to remove
00:06:18
the effects track
00:06:19
and let's start over from the beginning
00:06:24
and we'll remove these out i'll shift t
00:06:27
to remove those and let's just start
00:06:29
that we
00:06:30
as we hadn't done anything yet we still
00:06:32
have our initial
00:06:34
single vocal recording now the second
00:06:37
method is going to start off the same we'll
00:06:39
right click and duplicate the track
00:06:41
complete
00:06:42
we'll right click on that one and
00:06:43
duplicate complete
00:06:45
but for this time what i'm going to do
00:06:48
is right click on this third one
00:06:50
and we'll want to come to the event
00:06:53
section here
00:06:54
and then near the bottom we want to
00:06:56
separate
00:06:57
shared copies because these
00:07:01
events were created from the original
00:07:03
one up above and
00:07:04
with this method we're going to be using
00:07:06
the melodyne
00:07:08
and this can get a little bit funky if
00:07:11
you don't
00:07:12
create kind of a separate copy of this
00:07:14
vocal recording when we start processing
00:07:17
in melodyne so you can see in the bottom
00:07:19
left-hand corner this is listed as two
00:07:22
and if i select this we see one and one
00:07:26
now unfortunately melodyne is only
00:07:27
included in the professional version
00:07:29
of studio one so if you're only using
00:07:30
prime or artist
00:07:32
then this is not going to be available
00:07:34
for you unless you purchase melodyne and
00:07:37
get that feature but with this event
00:07:39
selected i'm going to
00:07:40
press ctrl m and that's going to open up
00:07:43
melodyne
00:07:44
and we can see what melodyne calls
00:07:48
as blobs representing our waveform up
00:07:51
above
00:07:53
and to make adjustments to the pitch we
00:07:54
would simply click to select
00:07:56
one of these
00:08:03
we can uh click and hold to audition
00:08:04
that but so for the first
00:08:11
blob i'm going to take that to c sharp
00:08:14
and the i'm using the mouse wheel to
00:08:16
scroll i'm going to select the second
00:08:17
one
00:08:18
and take that down to
00:08:22
b flat and let's hear how this sounds
00:08:24
how the processing of melodyne sounds
00:08:27
on this so i'm gonna solo and let's
00:08:30
listen back
00:08:41
okay i think it sounds pretty decent
00:08:43
let's now come to
00:08:45
the third and i will
00:08:49
control m now for this one i'm going to
00:08:52
take the first blob here
00:08:56
to a and the second one
00:09:03
to b flat
00:09:10
and this is just as simple as coming to
00:09:12
the center of your
00:09:13
uh blob and click hold and dragging up
00:09:16
and down to adjust the pitch this is going to
00:09:18
adjust in semitones if you would like to
00:09:21
do a finer adjustment in cents just hold
00:09:23
down alt
00:09:24
while you're dragging up or down let's
00:09:27
close out the editor
00:09:28
and listen back to this
00:09:38
[Music]
00:09:40
okay and let's come to our mixer here
00:09:44
i'm gonna hold shift to select this one
00:09:46
and take these down just a little bit
00:09:48
more
00:09:49
and we can once again add our effects
00:09:52
channel
00:09:53
put the uh reverb on
00:09:57
we'll take him to church again
00:10:03
and let's send these to
00:10:06
the fx1 same process as we saw
00:10:10
earlier now let's play this
00:10:16
back
00:10:30
right
00:10:40
see that's a little bit funky you could
00:10:42
play around and adjust that
00:10:56
okay so you can always come in to the
00:11:00
melodyne by control m on the event that
00:11:02
you select
00:11:03
and play around with the adjustments you
00:11:06
can come to the top
00:11:07
of your event and
00:11:15
select it first
00:11:20
and then when you have this icon here
00:11:22
you can click
00:11:24
double click to separate this
00:11:27
so if you really like to come in and do
00:11:29
some finer adjustments to the melody
00:11:31
then you can do that but all of the
00:11:34
details of how to use melodyne is
00:11:36
beyond the scope of this tutorial i just
00:11:38
wanted to really show you the methods
00:11:40
that you can use i will put up an
00:11:42
in-depth tutorial on melodyne soon
00:11:44
but just know that you can do some extra
00:11:47
work in here to make things sound a bit
00:11:49
better
00:11:51
okay we'll close out the editor let's
00:11:54
delete that
00:11:55
event this one shift t to remove that
00:11:58
track
00:12:00
and this one and actually we don't need
00:12:03
this either
00:12:04
so the next and final method is
00:12:07
more experimental and if you're doing
00:12:10
electronic or experimental music
00:12:13
this is going to be more useful for that
00:12:15
if you're doing
00:12:16
something acoustic i wouldn't really use
00:12:19
it for that
00:12:20
let's come to the browser and the files
00:12:24
this is our same sample that we've been
00:12:26
listening to i'm going to right click
00:12:28
and send to a sample one and i'm just
00:12:31
going to really quickly
00:12:32
talk about this one we won't spend much
00:12:34
time here
00:12:36
now uh we have our caps locked to open
00:12:39
up the virtual
00:12:40
qwerty keyboard
00:12:44
so now at this point i could trigger
00:12:50
we hear it's the same sample and with
00:12:52
this you can actually
00:12:54
while this is loaded into sample one you
00:12:56
can just
00:12:57
press two or three keys to play back
00:13:06
[Music]
00:13:14
and you can hear the the pitched up
00:13:17
vocal finishes sooner than the original on c3
00:13:21
during playback we can use the follow
00:13:23
song tempo even though
00:13:24
this has been a little bit buggy for me
00:13:26
at times getting both to play back at
00:13:29
the same time but if i
00:13:30
turn the follow song temple on then
00:13:33
this will stretch or compress the audio
00:13:36
that's being played on different pitches
00:13:38
to all playback at the same time so
00:13:41
let's try that
00:13:48
[Music]
00:13:57
so again the quality is really not that
00:13:58
great on this one but it could be used
00:14:00
for
00:14:01
again experimental or fun stuff that
00:14:04
you're doing
00:14:05
you would just enter into record and
00:14:07
press the keys that you'd like
00:14:09
to create the harmony you want and then
00:14:11
you're all set
00:14:12
now i do have a track where i use this
00:14:15
method so i'm gonna
00:14:16
just play a few seconds of that so you
00:14:18
can get an idea of
00:14:19
some sort of instance where you could
00:14:21
use this particular method
00:14:23
so let's come to the song i'm gonna open
00:14:26
this up
00:14:27
and then here on this vox
00:14:30
sample one you can see this is triggered
00:14:34
only one pitch at a time through these
00:14:37
first
00:14:38
bars but here i trigger that more than
00:14:41
once
00:14:42
so let's listen back i'm gonna solo this
00:14:45
track so you can hear
00:14:47
the vocal sample
00:14:59
and then here the higher pitches come in
00:15:02
i'll play the track
00:15:17
[Music]
00:15:36
[Music]
00:15:47
okay uh so that is one example of
00:15:50
how you could use this if you don't
00:15:53
write this kind of music and if you
00:15:54
absolutely hate it then that third
00:15:55
method
00:15:56
may not be useful for you at all but i
00:15:58
just wanted to give an example
00:16:00
of how i've used that in the past
00:16:03
so i hope you found something useful
00:16:05
here on how you can
00:16:07
work with creating harmonies in studio
00:16:09
one it may not be
00:16:10
perfect a perfect solution but it's
00:16:13
something that you can try and maybe it
00:16:14
will work for you
00:16:16
when you're in a jam all right thanks
00:16:18
for watching and i will see you in the
00:16:20
next tutorial
