Dans l’ignorance que Broulaye a enduit le corps de sa femme avec des produits afin qu’aucun autre homme ne puisse partager sa couche. Yiriba viole les lois de l’hospitalité et fait du paysan un cocu. Sur le chemin du retour, Yiriba tombe malade, ses organes génitaux augmentent de volume. Broulaye, informé promet de le soigner avec l’antidote à condition qu’il avoue à tous le village qu’il a violé les lois de l’hospitalité et qu’il a couché avec la femme d’autrui. Biton ordonne aux féticheurs gardiens des quatre fétiches de Ségou de lui prédire son successeur parmi les enfants de sa maison. Ils consultent leurs fétiches et demandent à Biton de préparer de la bouillie de mil dans laquelle sera cachée sa bague et d’inviter les enfants à boire. L’enfant qui découvrira la bague sera certainement son successeur. N’golo découvre la bague et la garde. Biton enquête.
