00:00:05
It's been six months since the previous episode.
00:00:08
And it's not our laziness, it's the circumstances.
00:00:10
The cabin was purchased at the end of the summer. We started to work on it in the fall.
00:00:15
And suddenly in December, winter came.
00:00:17
As they say, it's never happened before and here it is again.
00:00:22
But now, as of March 1, we are back on track with the project.
00:00:25
And I promise there will be no more delays like this.
00:00:28
Since the team grew bigger and there are 2 people working on this project every day.
00:00:33
The next major task is the reconstruction and modernization of the roof.
00:00:37
The logical place to start is from the top down.
00:00:39
We extended the ladder as best we could and started dismantling the chimney.
00:00:45
There will be a little confusion with the seasons throughout the video,
00:00:49
since some of the footage was shot as early as last year, in the fall.
00:00:53
Basically, the video started with it.
00:00:58
So, let me share some of my thoughts. What's the plan for this old cabin anyway?
00:01:03
Despite its age, the wooden box itself is in excellent condition.
00:01:06
All beams are intact, strong and not rotten. The roof frame is also in good condition.
00:01:11
And even the slate seemed quite alright to us.
00:01:14
The plan is for this house to be a temporary shelter.
00:01:16
So that we can stay here overnight in the near future
00:01:20
and enjoy a comfortable stay while a major global construction project is being organized.
00:01:25
That is, we want to tinker with it as much as possible on a low budget, without doing a global redesign
00:01:30
with a minimal investment. We will do it all with our own hands.
00:01:33
And whenever possible, we'll use improvised, cheap,
00:01:36
and sometimes even free natural material.
00:01:38
The roof is no exception. But more on that later.
00:01:41
It's getting close to dinnertime. That means it's time to light the fire.
00:01:45
We did it away from the dusty construction work, by the old barn.
00:02:01
And while the potatoes are simmering appetizingly in the cauldron, I'm going hunting.
00:02:04
It's a harmless mushroom hunt.
00:02:06
Along the way, I meet disgruntled micro-neighbors,
00:02:09
whose peace will often be interrupted for the next few years.
00:02:14
All in all, the area is very picturesque, quiet and a bit wild.
00:02:17
We even spotted roe deer near the cabin recently.
00:02:20
Eventually, after walking around the property and the woods, which is basically the same thing,
00:02:24
I managed to get my hands on these woodland beauties.
00:02:27
And then it's just a matter of time.
00:02:29
Then I realized that there is a kind of
00:02:32
peculiar, incomparable pleasure in it.
00:02:34
To procure your own food, build a fire, cook, and savor the moment.
00:03:20
After lunch we head to the chimney again
00:03:23
to finalize that issue and get on with the roofing.
00:03:26
Thankfully, the mortar here was not strong at all,
00:03:29
and the bricks were easily stacked side by side in a large pile.
00:03:44
After a few hours, the bricks are stacked neatly at the edge of the property.
00:03:48
And then we're off to the roof again.
00:03:50
Initially, the plan was extremely simple: clean the roof of moss, leaves and fallen pine needles.
00:03:56
Then we planned to cover the slate with a special insulating material.
00:04:00
Make a roof-sheathing, cover it with a thin layer of soil and plant grass, moss and ferns.
00:04:05
Inside, we insulate the room and turn the former attic into a living space, or rather a bedroom.
00:04:11
Of course, we didn't give up on that idea.
00:04:14
We just changed the sequence and plan of action a little bit.
00:04:16
But more on that later. Let's not upset and distract the guys from their work.
00:04:21
Look at how hard they're working.
00:04:26
Once all the slate is basically cleared, we need to do the same with the attic.
00:04:31
First, we remove the boards. This didn't take long as they were not nailed down,
00:04:35
but were just evenly laid on top of the insulation. Real eco-insulation.
00:04:41
We had a little trouble with it. What is it, exactly?
00:04:44
Basically, it is finely chopped straw mixed with sawdust.
00:04:48
Basically, it is the source of the familiar smell of an old wooden house,
00:04:52
which is not to say that it is very pleasant,
00:04:55
but in fact it always evokes very warm memories. Summer, the countryside and carefree times.
00:05:30
In the end, after 1 day of work we managed to get about 100 bags of this goodness.
00:05:35
The only place that was hard to get to was the base of the roof.
00:05:39
This is where we decided to cheat.
00:05:41
We removed the boards on the outside and the insulation itself spilled outside.
00:05:46
The next step is to reinforce the roof,
00:05:48
because in the future it will be covered with a small, but still a solid layer of soil.
00:05:53
For this purpose, we bought this timber, which we use to partially duplicate the roof frame.
00:05:57
Or rather, we'll add rafters. And each beam will be a rafter.
00:06:02
For convenience, we decided to make a cutout on the ground to connect the two legs,
00:06:07
and do the assembly on the roof.
00:06:09
It's plain and simple.
00:06:32
After a few hours, we get the beams into the attic and start fitting.
00:06:36
Of course, we didn't do any calculations. We just decided to duplicate the rafters.
00:06:40
And add another rafter between each pair.
00:06:44
That is, in the end, to double their strength. I'm sure it'll be enough.
00:06:48
And if not, you'll definitely find out in the next episodes.
00:06:52
And here, by the way, you can clearly see where they will be located.
00:06:55
The same beams will be at the base,
00:06:57
so it's important to get them level, which is exactly what we're doing.
00:07:00
As you can see, there is uncut board on the floor.
00:07:03
Of course, it's not possible to perfectly align the beam on this base.
00:07:07
So by every means possible, we сut the parts we need to get rid of.
00:07:44
After the base is prepared, we start working on the rafters.
00:07:47
We mark, cut and try it on for fit.
00:07:49
And while the guys are at it, I'm googling stunning pictures of panoramic windows.
00:07:54
And much to their dismay, the internet is full of cool projects,
00:07:58
that I've looked at and got the idea. I won't settle for anything less.
00:08:03
But as you remember, the main idea is to have a super affordable cabin
00:08:07
that will look as good as the expensive projects from the pictures.
00:08:12
That's what we're going to test.
00:08:14
At the end of the project, I'll summarize and talk about all the costs.
00:08:17
By the way, here's one of the most expensive purchases we've made.
00:08:20
It is a metal profile pipe 120x80 mm.
00:08:24
We had to buy 6 units of 20 feet each for the entire structure, so 120 linear feet,
00:08:29
which cost $400.
00:10:25
In the end, we cleaned, machined
00:10:28
and painted this profile pipe in our workshop.
00:10:31
We put them in the car and drove them to the cabin.
00:10:39
By this point, calendar winter was coming to an end and was gradually giving way.
00:10:44
Or so we thought.
00:10:45
And we've been slowly getting ready for the season and getting the building material in.
00:10:55
As you already know, in order to make a large panoramic window,
00:10:59
you first need to cut out the opening. That's what Kolya is doing.
00:11:05
We have drawn the rough markings. Here we have the first and the second edge of the opening.
00:11:15
We reinforced it so it wouldn't fall on us.
00:11:19
This reinforcement is also temporary, it will all be put later, when all clear dimensions are met.
00:11:23
Because right now... well, the house was built a long time ago and there's no horizons,
00:11:31
no levels, no nothing. So we took the, uh, the easiest way.
00:11:36
We took an equal distance from the gable,
00:11:41
and laser leveled up all the marks.
00:12:19
We started a little bit here, cut out a window.
00:12:23
It's a little rough around the edges. We're roughing it out.
00:12:26
It'll be easier to patch the edges later, smooth them out.
00:12:30
The slate was taken down. We kept the sheets that we could save.
00:12:34
We didn't remove the slate all the way, the opening gets 7 more inches on that slate.
00:12:40
Now I'm going to drill a hole on that side from the inside according to the laser, a hole at the bottom.
00:12:45
We stretch a string and evenly cut off the excess slate along the string with a grinder.
00:12:51
It's a lot brighter now. A lot brighter, nice.
00:13:32
At that point, we were still hoping to get by with little trouble.
00:13:35
That's why we cut the slate to the size of the opening,
00:13:38
expecting that it would be a base on which we would lay the material,
00:13:41
cover it with soil and save money. But that was not the case!
00:13:47
Now we realized that the slate itself is quite strong, but its fasteners are not strong enough.
00:13:52
The nails have rotted away and we shouldn't count on this structure.
00:13:56
We took a long look at it, and still decided to remove the slate and most of the round crossbeams.
00:14:01
In the end, we will leave only the rafters of the old structure, which we are quite happy with.
00:14:29
Once we've decided on the opening, it's time to deal with the metalwork.
00:14:33
I think many people will ask why we decided to make the opening,
00:14:37
i.e. this panoramic insert, exactly this width. It's quite simple.
00:14:41
I called all the insulated glass manufacturers and found the widest finished units.
00:14:47
That is, those that did not fit and remained dead weight on the production line.
00:14:51
The manufacturer was happy to get rid of them at cost price.
00:14:55
And we weld the frame based on their size.
00:14:58
There is more welding work to come.
00:15:01
So we decided to purchase a compact electric arc welder.
00:15:05
And the generator is a temporary solution as the house has very old wiring,
00:15:09
and the process of replacing it got bogged down in paperwork.
00:15:13
And in order to keep the work running, we decided to rent a generator.
00:15:18
And of course it's worth noting that we're not filming a workshop.
00:15:21
That's probably not the way it's supposed to be done. Let me know about it in the comments.
00:15:26
But no matter what, I'm determined to get cool cheap panoramic windows.
00:15:35
Anyway, we cut out the opening and realized that we had a short metal lower base.
00:15:42
We've moved it outside, and now we're gonna weld an 8-inch piece to it
00:15:47
to minimize welding inside, because fires or not, things happen.
00:16:01
And then it's just like the others.
00:16:03
We cut the section to the required size, adjust,
00:16:06
put it on the roof and slowly assemble the intended construction.
00:16:20
For the most part, it's all a gamble and an experiment.
00:16:23
We draw most of our information from the internet,
00:16:26
experimenting and learning by doing.
00:16:28
None of us are professional construction workers.
00:16:30
But each of us has an opinion and a clear vision of the process.
00:16:34
I get it. It would be cool to see all the dots on a laser level.
00:16:38
Yeah, so you can move inside, it's darker there.
00:16:41
And you should be able to see it there. Or do the others, then we'll do this one.
00:16:45
I'm telling you, it's easier to set the bottom one now.
00:16:47
It'll take 20 minutes to set the bottom one.
00:16:51
I'm cleaning it up now, welding it, even more time.
00:16:55
- Oh, it needs to be longer, huh? - It needs to be longer and I need to cut the corners right away.
00:17:32
Even though it was the middle of March, winter stubbornly ignored this information.
00:17:38
And from time to time it pleased us with such marvelous weather,
00:17:41
but for some reason the guys were not very happy about it, except for me and Kolya.
00:17:46
As for me, it makes sense, I think, since I rarely showed up at the construction site.
00:17:50
But Kolya was pleased, because it was safer to weld,
00:17:53
because the sparks from welding were falling on the wet snow instead of on dry boards.
00:17:57
We got ready for welding, we put up a fire mat, a special fireproof material.
00:18:02
All right, we're gonna weld them one at a time now.
00:18:05
We should end up with a nice sturdy self-supporting frame.
00:18:09
This is important because we'll be placing the double-glazed windows directly onto it.
00:18:52
And here are some more artifacts from the past and a little story about the place
00:18:56
that was found in an old letter.
00:18:58
A letter from the Motherland. Hello, dear brother Shura.
00:19:01
In the first lines of my little letter I want to let you know
00:19:04
that we are alive and well and we wish the same for you.
00:19:07
Shura, we received your letter and card, for which we thank you many times over.
00:19:12
Shura, you're asking for Anyuta's address.
00:19:15
Shura, we gave Anyuta your address and she'll send you a letter.
00:19:19
Shura, you're asking what the local weather is like.
00:19:22
We've had good weather so far. We don't know if it'll hold.
00:19:25
Shura, you're asking where Anyuta works now.
00:19:28
Anyuta now works as a nurse in the village or town of Dyatlovo.
00:19:33
Shura, there's no dancing in Konevichi at all. There are dances in Pyra, at the club.
00:19:38
Shura, you're asking whether we have bread, bacon.
00:19:40
Shura, don't worry about us, take care of yourself. We have bread and bacon. We've got all we need.
00:19:48
Shura, you're asking how much beetroot we've been given.
00:19:51
They gave us 1 acre of beets and 1 acre of corn. And we cultivate all the flax.
00:19:57
Shura, you said if you joined the army, I'd destroy your bike.
00:20:02
But your bike is still working and will keep doing so.
00:20:04
Shura, we have a cow and a calf now. We also keep two big pigs.
00:20:09
Shura, we prepared two loads of fodder for the winter, but we haven't mowed the potato haulm yet.
00:20:15
So we can keep two cows during the winter.
00:20:23
I know a lot of people follow our Telegram channel.
00:20:26
We post breaking news, process photos, and spoilers for the series there.
00:20:30
At least a couple gigabytes of material is captured every day.
00:20:33
Then it's sorted, edited, and prepared for a post.
00:21:37
Later on we will cover the OSB sheets with waterproofing, drainage
00:21:41
and a thin layer of soil for landscaping.
00:21:43
Personally, my first association with a green roof is Norway.
00:21:48
It's pretty common there and it looks like this.
00:21:51
Back in prehistoric times, the Norwegians realized,
00:21:54
or rather were forced to realize, given their harsh climate, that this was a great solution.
00:21:59
The fact is that a thick ground layer serves well as an insulator against cold, heat and noise.
00:22:05
Obviously, this volume weighs a decent amount. But it was also used for other purposes
00:22:11
and the soil served as a press, protecting the structure from the wind
00:22:15
and helping fast, even settlement of log houses.
00:22:19
As a result, the logs were tightly pressed against each other,
00:22:22
which had a positive effect on thermal insulation. At least that's what they say.
00:22:26
Of course, such a roof requires a heavy-duty roof frame, slabs, walls
00:22:31
and, consequently, the foundation, and our cabin has none of that.
00:22:35
And I really want a green roof. So I decided to do a little experimenting.
00:22:39
Eventually I plan to replace the grass with moss. What's the idea here?
00:22:42
First, a very small layer of soil will be enough
00:22:46
for the moss to grow and feel good.
00:22:48
Yes, this layer originally served as thermal insulation as well.
00:22:51
We solve this issue with lightweight modern insulation.
00:22:55
You should also keep in mind that Norway has a very humid climate.
00:22:58
And that's enough to keep the roof lawn from drying out.
00:23:02
In our climate, the roof would have to be watered additionally. Moss solves the problem.
00:23:07
It's pretty resilient and doesn't require as much care as grass. At least I think so.
00:23:12
I have not found information and successful implementation of moss roofs on the web.
00:23:17
If you have such experience, please let us know. Contacts are in the description of the video.
00:23:21
In fact, this ancient technology was used in Norway until the 1950s.
00:23:27
But then the natural beauty was superseded by more modern lightweight materials.
00:23:32
But as we know, history runs in cycles.
00:23:34
Nowadays, such earth roofs have regained relevance.
00:23:38
And it has become much easier to implement it, given the emergence
00:23:42
of modern technologies and materials.
00:23:44
And in some communes in Norway, that's what they call neighborhoods, by the way,
00:23:48
there is a mandatory requirement that the roofs of houses be covered with turf.
00:23:52
By the time we had finished removing the old slate and shingles, the surveyors had arrived
00:23:57
to mark off the precise boundaries of the property.
00:24:00
To tell you the truth, I wasn't particularly excited about these boundaries
00:24:03
because I originally thought the plot would be bigger.
00:24:06
But given our legislation, it's a gift as it is,
00:24:10
as it is currently impossible to buy a plot of land in the forest.
00:24:13
So we work with what we have and enjoy it.
00:24:16
In the end, it took about a month to remove the old material
00:24:20
and make a new reinforced frame. Many of you would probably say that this is too long.
00:24:24
Probably, yes. But we have to take our backgrounds into account.
00:24:28
First of all, we're not construction workers, we're enthusiasts.
00:24:30
Second, the weather often gave us unscheduled days off.
00:24:34
Third, don't forget that all of this is captured in detail on camera
00:24:38
to tell you the story.
00:24:40
And this process is really slowing down construction. Take my word for it.
00:24:44
According to very rough estimates, the work is done 2-3 times faster
00:24:48
if you don't make a video about it. That's just the way it is.
00:24:51
After the frame is ready, we just need to cover it with OSB sheets.
00:24:55
That's what the guys are doing. Hour after hour, sheet after sheet.
00:24:58
Two days later, the required part of the roof is sealed.
00:25:01
But as you can see, there are still plenty of gaps. This is the way it was designed,
00:25:06
as we will have to glass the panoramic part in the future.
00:25:09
And to ease the work, we left openings through which we will get
00:25:14
to the outside of the roof. A little patience and it will all become clear.
00:25:18
But to do the glassing we need a few more Kolya-days
00:25:21
of welding work, because it won't be quite right
00:25:25
to do the welding next to the glued-in glass afterwards.
00:25:28
We're doing it now. What's the task at hand?
00:25:31
We need to add roof-sheathing to the main metal frame,
00:25:35
to which the OSB will be attached.
00:25:37
The thing is, this side of the panorama will only be glass at the very top,
00:25:42
in order to get the glass ridge.
00:25:44
And in the future, lying on the bed, we can admire nature and the starry sky.
00:25:48
There is also a driveway to the house on this side.
00:25:51
And you don't want it to be completely transparent.
00:25:54
But the other side overlooks the woods. That's where the main panorama will be.
00:26:06
So, let's keep doing the OSB reinforcements, laying the grating.
00:26:11
Metal is prepared, markings are made.
00:26:14
Now we'll clean it and weld it. The work is 5 minutes, we'll drink tea at the base at lunchtime.
00:26:32
So, the roof work is ongoing. Here the roof-sheathing is all ready.
00:26:37
Welded, painted to match the OSB sheet.
00:26:40
And here, to put the glass, we decided not to put glass to glass, but to reinforce the junctions.
00:26:48
We have ordered this T-beam. Wall thickness 5, 40x50.
00:26:59
It's gonna go down like this. This is how it's going to lay, fit, weld.
00:27:08
And it will be supported, you see, by the glass
00:27:11
through special plastic spacers.
00:27:14
This is reinforcement to keep the glass from sagging under the weight.
00:27:17
After all, it's a lot of weight. These are the designs we ordered.
00:27:22
Okay, final preparations. I've got the place marked up. Put it on the clamps.
00:27:31
As always, while driving here, we rushed, we wanted to make it. We forgot the mask and gloves.
00:27:36
We borrowed a mask to match the machine from the locals.
00:27:43
That's it, we're gonna weld it up now. Measure one last time.
00:27:47
Angle everything out, check diagonals and weld.
00:27:51
That's what Kolya did. Looking ahead, I'll say that it was done perfectly.
00:27:56
And this is very important, because each cell will hold a double-glazed unit.
00:28:00
And if you make a mistake even a couple of inches, it will be fatal,
00:28:04
because the glass will not be able to bend, trim or otherwise change.
00:28:08
And then another couple hours of welding, cleaning and painting.
00:28:12
We originally planned to finish it all in one day.
00:28:15
But, as the saying goes, if you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.
00:28:19
Okay. This is what it looks like when it's finished.
00:28:23
There's two panes of glass, I think there's five panes of glass.
00:28:28
This is what it looks like. Just tacked on, it's not welded yet.
00:28:33
I had to relocate the lower pipe, the very bottom one.
00:28:38
The lowest one, because we made a little mistake with the size of the glass. That's it, we're welding now.
00:28:47
Okay, so, my watch says it's 8:00 p.m.. We're not done. We'll be back tomorrow.
00:28:56
So, here we are on another day.
00:28:58
Now we're going to cut off these extra things that are in the way, here's the markings.
00:29:03
It's gonna stick out here a little bit. Cut these things off. We're gonna weld the crosspieces here.
00:29:08
Add another one to finish it all off with a sheet.
00:29:12
This is where you'll probably ask a question.
00:29:14
Why is our metal structure significantly longer than the main roof?
00:29:19
In the process, it became clear that it would look like a separate element anyway.
00:29:24
In the end, I decided not to mask it, but to intentionally highlight and emphasize it.
00:29:28
I'm not a designer or an architect. It's just the way I want it.
00:29:31
This insert will be decorated differently in the future.
00:29:34
And as you've already realized, the length of it will also stand out.
00:29:38
Finally, let's get to the fun part.
00:29:40
We prepare to put the double-glazed windows into the frame.
00:29:43
And at the same time to check how Kolya managed with diagonals and sizes.
00:29:47
Glass must not be placed directly on the metal frame.
00:29:50
They say it's bad luck.
00:29:52
So we prepare plastic spacers like these by gluing them on double-sided tape,
00:29:58
to lay out and secure in place.
00:30:01
Degrease, spread and try on the first pane of glass.
00:30:04
Basically, it's all clear here, and it seems to be an extremely simple process.
00:30:08
Plastic spacers are placed on the metal frame. We place the glass on them.
00:30:13
We tape it around the perimeter and prepare the sealant.
00:30:17
For this purpose we took a special sealant from MasterSeal.
00:30:20
Links to all supplies as always can be found in the description of the video.
00:30:23
As I said, everything looks very simple and straightforward here.
00:30:27
But there are always pitfalls and complications that we didn't even think of.
00:30:32
And here is one of them. The fact is that without reliable professional suction cups
00:30:36
it is rather difficult to install such double-glazed windows, to put it mildly.
00:30:39
There was not a single option available for rent.
00:30:41
The suction cups on sale were of very questionable quality.
00:30:45
And I didn't want to drop that glass while standing on the roof.
00:30:48
But, as you can see, the suction cups are still present in the frame.
00:30:52
Dima helped us a lot with that.
00:30:54
He's our manufacturing neighbor, subscriber, and just a great guy.
00:30:57
Who came on his day off, brought suction cups and gave us a tutorial.
00:31:02
And then it's the same pattern from there.
00:31:04
Hour after hour, pane after pane, and the puzzle slowly came together.
00:31:25
Okay, 100% cleaner. It's brand name. It says it cleans foam.
00:31:29
But most importantly, it is great for degreasing steel surfaces
00:31:35
before applying silicones or polyurethanes.
00:31:38
Now let's try degreasing. And then we'll apply the necessary coat. That's it.
00:31:50
The next day, the sealant dried and the gaps in the roof, which had been purposely left
00:31:54
for the convenience of installing insulating glass units, could be sealed.
00:32:03
And here you can see clearly what we did this metal roof-sheathing for.
00:32:07
Cut the OSB to size and fasten.
00:32:09
On the opposite side, our panoramic insert is also longer than the main roof.
00:32:14
But here the OSB area is much smaller.
00:32:17
So we decided to make do with wooden roof-sheathing, which is attached to metal corners.
00:32:22
Next, we seal the improvised ladder,
00:32:25
which was used when installing the windows.
00:32:27
We subsequently covered the entire roof with plastic sheeting.
00:32:29
And as a result, by the end of this video, this is what we have.
00:32:47
In the end, this is what our design looks like.
00:32:49
The only thing we didn't show you was these knots.
00:32:52
We welded a simple metal angle
00:32:55
to tie the two structures together.
00:32:56
That is, wood frame and metal frame.
00:32:59
Actually, I'm very happy with it. It looks reliable, it's high quality.
00:33:02
And it's probably done right.
00:33:04
But of course I'll learn about it in the comments, so leave a comment down below.
00:33:08
I think a lot of people will have a question
00:33:10
about how much the whole roof has cost us so far.
00:33:13
We started a tradition not too long ago, and after each YouTube release
00:33:18
we publish a post on our Telegram channel
00:33:20
detailing the costs, prices, challenges and setbacks.
00:33:25
Basically, all the inner workings with numbers.
00:33:27
There's already such a post on this episode, the link is in the description.
00:33:31
Thanks for watching and see you soon.
