00:00:00
(tense music)
00:00:02
- Oh, it wants to bite me.
00:00:04
(sighs loudly)
00:00:05
I'm actually going to get chomped.
00:00:07
Ready?
00:00:08
One.
00:00:09
Two.
00:00:10
Three.
00:00:12
(tense music)
00:00:15
(yelling loudly)
00:00:16
Ah, he's biting me!
00:00:17
He's got me good.
00:00:18
(groaning loudly)
00:00:19
Oh, he's latched.
00:00:21
He's latched.
00:00:23
He won't let go.
00:00:24
He won't let go.
00:00:26
(dramatic music)
00:00:34
Oh, got one.
00:00:36
Oh yeah.
00:00:37
Woo, yeah!
00:00:39
This, believe it or not,
00:00:41
is one of the most famous creatures
00:00:44
ever featured on the Brave Wilderness channel.
00:00:47
That's right,
00:00:48
the original bloodworm video now has over 73 million views,
00:00:53
but in that original adventure,
00:00:55
we did leave a few things on the table
00:00:58
that are definitely worth revisiting.
00:01:00
Namely the venomous bite of this creature.
00:01:03
Actually, did Coyote take a bite?
00:01:06
(Coyote yelling loudly)
00:01:08
- [Host] Did he bite you?
00:01:09
- He got me!
00:01:10
- [Host] (laughs loudly) I got that!
00:01:11
- He got me, I felt it.
00:01:12
It was a little pinch.
00:01:14
- [Host] Let me see, where'd he get you?
00:01:16
- [Coyote] Right there.
00:01:17
Right in the crux of my finger.
00:01:20
- I think we can do better than just a pinch
00:01:22
from one of the world's only venomous worms.
00:01:25
In fact,
00:01:26
we learned something very important about this creature
00:01:29
between the last adventure and today
00:01:30
that's going to help us achieve a bite on camera,
00:01:33
but before I go getting myself chomped
00:01:37
for this new bloodworm experiment,
00:01:39
we need to find a whole lot more worms than just this one.
00:01:41
Let's keep digging.
00:01:43
Bloodworms hunt for prey in the tidal mud flats
00:01:45
of both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts
00:01:47
of the United States and Canada.
00:01:49
They have also earned the nickname sludgeworm,
00:01:51
since their habitat consists of thick mud
00:01:54
and quicksand that can easily swallow your boots whole.
00:01:57
To find these slimy predators,
00:01:59
worm diggers use special rakes to quickly
00:02:01
peel back mud and reveal worms on the move
00:02:04
that could be sold as prize fishing bait.
00:02:06
And while they can be difficult to find,
00:02:08
some of the best worm diggers in Maine
00:02:11
could collect up to 1000 worms a day,
00:02:13
with the largest ones growing up to 15 inches long.
00:02:17
After hours of digging,
00:02:18
and covered head to toe in mud and sweat,
00:02:21
we filled the bucket and set the stage
00:02:23
for one of the worst bites we've ever filmed.
00:02:26
Welcome to the bloodworm bite table.
00:02:29
What I have in front of me here
00:02:30
are five very large bloodworms.
00:02:33
No,
00:02:34
these are not your granddad's night crawlers, folks.
00:02:36
These are natural-born killers.
00:02:39
Armed with four venomous fangs and an appetite to match,
00:02:42
we have been told that these worms pack one heck of a bite.
00:02:46
Some people say that it's like a bee sting,
00:02:48
and locals have even told us that they've seen worm diggers
00:02:51
crawling out of the mud flats in near tears
00:02:53
from being bitten by these carnivorous worms.
00:02:56
But there is one key piece of information
00:02:58
that we learned from the original bloodworm video to today,
00:03:01
and that is you can actually head a bloodworm.
00:03:04
Similar to how a herpetologist would head
00:03:06
a venomous snake to keep it from biting them,
00:03:08
I will actually attempt to grab
00:03:10
the proboscis once it shoots out,
00:03:12
and then intentionally inflict my first bite.
00:03:14
And yes, I said first bite.
00:03:16
There's gonna be more than one.
00:03:17
Now what I'm going to try to do is head the proboscis,
00:03:20
and while I'm attempting to do this,
00:03:22
let's review some of the most interesting
00:03:24
facts about this bizarre marine oddity.
00:03:26
The bloodworm is a venomous segmented worm
00:03:29
that hunts invertebrates and other marine creatures.
00:03:31
Armed with four razor sharp fangs
00:03:33
and a projectile mouth called a proboscis,
00:03:36
they are voracious predators,
00:03:37
and are as aggressive as they are bizarre.
00:03:40
One of the most shocking things about these worms
00:03:42
is how normal they can appear,
00:03:44
and then in a split second,
00:03:45
transformed into one of the most
00:03:47
alien-looking life forms you've ever seen.
00:03:50
And as if this wasn't creepy enough, things get even worse.
00:03:53
Once the blood worm has its prey
00:03:55
ensnared in those hook jaws,
00:03:57
it will inject it with a paralyzing venom
00:03:59
that incapacitates the victim
00:04:01
so it can be digested and eaten alive.
00:04:05
This venom is chemically similar to that of a scorpion
00:04:07
and is known to cause severe reactions in humans,
00:04:10
including burning, tissue damage,
00:04:13
and anaphylactic shock.
00:04:14
Please do not attempt what you're about to see.
00:04:17
Oh, almost got it.
00:04:20
Ah, I missed it.
00:04:21
Oh, oh!
00:04:22
Come on.
00:04:23
All right.
00:04:25
I've got it.
00:04:28
Oh, wants to bite me.
00:04:29
That is the proboscis of one of the biggest
00:04:31
bloodworms I have ever seen.
00:04:34
Holy moly.
00:04:36
That's over a foot, for sure.
00:04:39
Okay, time to get bitten by one of
00:04:42
the only venomous worms on the planet,
00:04:45
the bloodworm.
00:04:46
We've got a good hold on it.
00:04:47
Here we go.
00:04:48
One.
00:04:50
Two.
00:04:52
Three.
00:04:54
Ah!
00:04:57
(grunting loudly)
00:05:02
Oh, look at that.
00:05:05
Ah, he won't let go.
00:05:06
He won't let go.
00:05:08
(grunting loudly)
00:05:13
Oh, he's in.
00:05:15
He's really on there, guys.
00:05:16
I can't get him off.
00:05:21
He's biting me, he's got me good.
00:05:28
Yeah, he got me.
00:05:30
Oh man, it didn't break the skin.
00:05:32
It was definitely latched into me,
00:05:33
but it's fangs I don't think are long enough
00:05:36
to break the skin of my finger.
00:05:38
I wonder if I try on a softer part.
00:05:42
Let's try my wrist.
00:05:43
It's a little bit thinner there, a little bit softer.
00:05:46
All right, here we go.
00:05:47
Let's go in for the second bite on three.
00:05:50
One.
00:05:53
Two.
00:05:55
Three.
00:05:57
Oh yeah, see him tug on the skin?
00:06:00
He's in, he's latched.
00:06:01
He's latched!
00:06:03
Yeah! (groans loudly)
00:06:06
I can't get him off.
00:06:09
Yeah, he's got me.
00:06:10
You see that?
00:06:12
Keep rolling, keep rolling.
00:06:13
I'm gonna try to pry him off.
00:06:14
Oh, he's really latched on.
00:06:17
(groans loudly) Come on.
00:06:19
Let go, let go.
00:06:21
He won't let go, he won't let go.
00:06:23
Gotta get him off.
00:06:28
Oh yeah.
00:06:30
That was a full on bloodworm bite.
00:06:33
Boy, that burns.
00:06:34
Gosh, you get that shot?
00:06:36
His fangs were all the way latched in.
00:06:40
Oh.
00:06:45
Oh, that burns.
00:06:47
Oh man, yes.
00:06:50
You can see that there wasn't much
00:06:52
blood produced in the bite,
00:06:53
but I've got blisters forming,
00:06:55
and that's likely due to all the inflammation and swelling.
00:06:58
I seal it in the nervous system.
00:06:59
My wrist is screaming right now.
00:07:01
Super painful burning sensation,
00:07:04
a lot like a wasp or a bee sting.
00:07:06
Those fangs are like little talons,
00:07:08
and it just grabbed right through the skin,
00:07:10
and did not wanna let go.
00:07:12
They were like barbs on a fishing hook.
00:07:13
They were just in there.
00:07:15
And really, I wasn't able to get the worm off
00:07:17
until it decided to relax a little bit and I pried it back,
00:07:20
but those fangs are definitely sharp enough.
00:07:24
Yikes, that hurt.
00:07:26
Now that we've witnessed what a single
00:07:29
bloodworm is capable of,
00:07:31
let's see what happens when I submerge
00:07:33
my hands in over a hundred of them.
00:07:36
Do bloodworms hunt in packs?
00:07:38
We're about to find out.
00:07:39
Before I attempt to feed my hands
00:07:41
to these four-fanged terrors,
00:07:43
let's take a look at what they did
00:07:44
to some normal prey from the wild.
00:07:46
While related and very similar looking to bloodworms,
00:07:49
the sandworm is not nearly as formidable.
00:07:52
And after a short time in a small aquarium,
00:07:54
we can see they are also very much their food.
00:07:59
The venomous bloodworms attacked
00:08:00
and broke down the sandworms quickly,
00:08:03
and what you're seeing now are signs
00:08:05
of both chewing and dismemberment.
00:08:07
A clear sign of active predation.
00:08:13
If you thought one bloodworm bite was bad,
00:08:17
check this out.
00:08:22
Whoa!
00:08:25
Look at all these worms.
00:08:28
That is a container filled with
00:08:30
over 100 bloodworms in this tank,
00:08:34
and I'm going to attempt to submerge my hands
00:08:37
into this tank of bloodworms for two minutes,
00:08:40
all of that to figure out do bloodworms hunt in packs.
00:08:44
Ready?
00:08:45
On three.
00:08:46
One.
00:08:48
Two.
00:08:50
Three.
00:08:53
Oh, that feels so weird.
00:08:55
(tense music)
00:08:58
(yells quickly) I just took my first bite.
00:09:00
Hit me on the pinkie.
00:09:02
It was a bite and release.
00:09:04
Oh, I can feel 'em.
00:09:05
Yeah, I can feel more proboscis going.
00:09:07
It's like you can feel them tense up,
00:09:08
and then boof, it fires out.
00:09:14
It's killing me.
00:09:15
You can see them wriggling,
00:09:17
and they have their little sensory tips
00:09:19
sensing their environment for anything
00:09:21
that they can eat or get those jaws on.
00:09:25
Oh, I can see a lot of them are shooting
00:09:28
their proboscis out already.
00:09:29
They sense something foreign in their environment.
00:09:31
I got to look away.
00:09:33
This is like too much anxiety
00:09:34
just looking at this container.
00:09:37
This has got to be the creepiest thing
00:09:39
I have ever done in my entire life.
00:09:42
Just so disgusting feeling all those
00:09:45
worms wriggling round my fingers.
00:09:46
One thing that we noticed earlier is that
00:09:48
as soon as one of them fires their proboscis,
00:09:51
it seems to create a rapid fire effect.
00:09:53
They all do it at the same time.
00:09:55
- [Coyote] They're going crazy.
00:09:56
- They are, I feel them wriggling around my fingers.
00:09:58
Oh man, oh yeah.
00:10:00
Ah!
00:10:01
Got another one, mm.
00:10:05
Oh my goodness, so creepy.
00:10:08
All right, how much time left?
00:10:10
- [Coyote] 30 seconds left.
00:10:11
- All right.
00:10:12
This has gotta be the longest two minutes of my life.
00:10:15
Two minutes feel like an eternity.
00:10:17
Ah!
00:10:19
Oh!
00:10:20
Oh, the bloodworm bite tank.
00:10:23
This is horrible!
00:10:26
Give me a countdown.
00:10:28
- [Coyote] Five, four--
00:10:29
- Ah, got me again!
00:10:30
- [Coyote] Three, two,
00:10:31
one!
00:10:32
- Ah!
00:10:36
Definitely got nailed on the pinkie on this side,
00:10:38
and I got two nips between my fingers,
00:10:40
here and here.
00:10:43
Definitely got nipped three times.
00:10:47
Wow.
00:10:49
That was weird.
00:10:50
What a crazy day on the Brave Wilderness channel.
00:10:54
Well, I don't know if we can definitively say
00:10:56
that bloodworms like to hunt in packs,
00:10:58
but I'll tell you this.
00:10:59
They sure don't mind sharing a meal.
00:11:02
But man, that original bite?
00:11:05
That was a serious, serious chomp from a bloodworm.
00:11:09
It is absolutely swollen and very tender to the touch.
00:11:13
I have a feeling I'm gonna be in pain
00:11:15
for quite a while on that one.
00:11:17
(voiceover) And I was absolutely correct.
00:11:20
The bite of a bloodworm was no joke,
00:11:22
and ended up becoming one of the most
00:11:24
painful experiences I've endured so far.
00:11:28
Overnight the swelling increased dramatically,
00:11:30
and the burning around the bite spread
00:11:32
through my hand and up my arm,
00:11:34
nearly locking my wrist.
00:11:38
Then days after the initial pain subsided,
00:11:41
I had a secondary reaction,
00:11:43
where the bite zone flared up with an aggressive rash
00:11:46
and itched at least twice as much as poison ivy.
00:11:49
In all it took three weeks to heal from the bloodworm venom,
00:11:53
and I am here to officially say the scary
00:11:55
rumors of bloodworms are 100% true.
00:11:59
So while these creatures are an important part
00:12:02
of the inner-tidal ecosystem and a valued
00:12:04
resource for fishing towns across Maine,
00:12:07
you absolutely want to avoid their bite at all costs.
00:12:14
Ouch, exclamation point!
00:12:17
(mud squelching quietly)
00:12:20
(animal howling loudly)
