00:00:02
well here we are at the control room in
00:00:05
the studio we have Neil Kernan and
00:00:08
Justin Leah working away hard here on
00:00:11
The Wretched Spawn
00:00:12
this is going to be an all digital
00:00:14
record and that's the first time we've
00:00:15
ever done that
00:00:17
all right one of the first things um
00:00:19
actually the first thing that we do when
00:00:21
we get down to the studios you know we
00:00:22
set everything up
00:00:24
and then it's time to start doing the
00:00:25
scratch tracks which is where we're
00:00:27
actually doing the final drum take
00:00:30
but we're um you know the guitar players
00:00:33
and the bass player you know are playing
00:00:34
along there's no vocals on that and um
00:00:38
that's very rough you know we're just
00:00:40
getting the basic drum tracks down so it
00:00:42
doesn't matter if you know the guitar
00:00:43
and bass tracks are a little rough
00:00:45
because we're going to end up recording
00:00:46
over them later while we track the
00:00:48
tracks live we go back and and redo a
00:00:51
lot of it we keep the drum tracks and
00:00:52
obviously we redo the bass and the
00:00:54
guitars and the vocals are done last
00:00:57
and it's it what what you need to have
00:01:00
is is maximum excitement that you would
00:01:03
you know try to recreate the excitement
00:01:04
of live you know you sort of think well
00:01:06
how can it be that exciting if the guys
00:01:07
are doing things one at a time well
00:01:10
because we do have the opportunity to go
00:01:12
over it and over it and and in you know
00:01:15
in enhance or work on the performances
00:01:18
one by one you can really you could you
00:01:21
know you can
00:01:23
maximize the intensity or you can just
00:01:25
say well yeah play that one and do that
00:01:27
part just you know harder or whatever
00:01:29
but we always go into the studio and
00:01:32
leaving the studio every time feeling
00:01:34
that we did the best product ever you
00:01:36
know and I I love everything we did and
00:01:38
and The Wretched I I would think just
00:01:40
the fact that we grow as songwriters and
00:01:43
you know listening to all the tracks and
00:01:46
I mean there's a lot of really catchy
00:01:48
songs to me you know and I think we did
00:01:49
a great job so
00:01:51
um
00:01:52
I mean the production I think is a key
00:01:54
as well Neil did a great job and uh it's
00:01:58
going to be it's the best sounding CD
00:02:00
we've done so in that way it's really
00:02:02
special and makes it maybe you know
00:02:04
stick out a little more the sound I mean
00:02:07
I'm I'm thrilled with it it's it's a lot
00:02:09
Punchy a lot heavier than the last
00:02:10
record which of course is what we're
00:02:12
going for so you know it's a good thing
00:02:14
that we have it in us you know when
00:02:16
we've been doing it this long and we
00:02:18
have great songwriters in the band and
00:02:20
Jack Alex and Pat you know the the ideas
00:02:23
are always there you know someone were
00:02:25
ready to do the next one you know I have
00:02:28
totally confident that you know we'll
00:02:30
come up with some great material and and
00:02:32
do another great CD it's always nice to
00:02:34
think well hey we've got a couple of
00:02:35
songs here that that are really catchy
00:02:38
just naturally catchy you know
00:02:39
songwriting songwriters usually you know
00:02:41
they get better at writing songs you
00:02:43
know as time goes on rather than
00:02:45
you know wow you know I'm getting better
00:02:47
at what I do and this song's really
00:02:49
catchy and people really like this one
00:02:50
that naturally happens you know Alex
00:02:52
writes for example a lot of very hooky
00:02:54
parts
00:02:55
and I think he's writing more and more
00:02:57
hooky stuff but he without realizing
00:02:58
he's just writing what he feels and it's
00:03:01
all a sensibility I think I think all
00:03:03
songwriters if
00:03:04
if they do their homework are going to
00:03:07
go well this is what I used to write
00:03:08
this is what I'm writing now it seems to
00:03:11
be getting better you know we we just
00:03:13
love playing playing death metal and
00:03:15
luckily there was a enough people out in
00:03:17
the world to be able to you know to want
00:03:19
to hear our band you know and to you
00:03:22
know to let us come on tour and see you
00:03:24
know play in front of these people and
00:03:26
they buy our merch and you know buy the
00:03:28
CDs and that's obviously what's making
00:03:30
you know making us go in that sense
00:03:33
where you know we're we don't have to
00:03:35
work jobs you know this is our job you
00:03:37
know and it's delivering the death metal
00:03:38
so you know so I think uh you know our
00:03:42
love of the music and the fans are what
00:03:44
really have kept us around of course I
00:03:46
mean I'm happy to be out there because
00:03:48
all the people we talk to they're fans
00:03:50
of our band which of course we're very
00:03:52
happy of that but they're fans of the
00:03:54
same music that we all love that we have
00:03:55
such passion for I think uh that
00:03:57
translates to our fans they know that
00:03:59
we're a band that they're always going
00:04:00
to be able to count on so you know do
00:04:02
our best to make a brutal album for them
00:04:05
for ourselves you know for death metal
00:04:07
in general I mean uh this music is
00:04:10
everything to me it's given me so much
00:04:14
that I you know and the fans have given
00:04:16
me and I'm sure the other guys in the
00:04:18
band will tell you the same thing they've given all of us
00:04:21
more than we could ever give back but we
00:04:23
try to get back when we play we play our
00:04:24
asses off you know I'm singing
00:04:27
my balls off I think when we play the
00:04:29
fans they're going crazy and and that's
00:04:31
what it's really all about for me
00:04:33
lyrically I just sit down with the
00:04:34
finished tape of the song that we did
00:04:36
and then I just try to start getting
00:04:39
ideas
00:04:41
um listening to the song over and over
00:04:43
and of course if we already know what
00:04:45
we're gonna call the song then I'm just
00:04:46
starting to you know to write around
00:04:48
that and that's usually what ends up
00:04:50
happening because we feel of course the
00:04:52
titles are very important part of
00:04:53
Cannibal Corpse so we usually end up
00:04:56
coming with a title first before we
00:04:58
start writing not all the time I know
00:05:00
for my songs I do it that way I think a
00:05:02
few of the other songs like Jack wrote
00:05:04
and Alex I think they might have had
00:05:06
more of an idea what they wanted to
00:05:08
write about and the song title came from
00:05:09
that the music is intense and the lyrics
00:05:12
should be intense I've said this in
00:05:13
every interview I've done we learn we're
00:05:15
not going to sing about flowers
00:05:16
and and blue skies and skipping through
00:05:20
the ground us with our women you know or
00:05:22
or girlfriends or wives we're not going
00:05:25
to sing about that it's never going to
00:05:27
happen we really want the music and the
00:05:28
lyrics to be one you know cohesive
00:05:31
Musical and artistic structure you know
00:05:35
we don't want them to
00:05:37
not mess you know it only makes sense I
00:05:40
used to just sing
00:05:41
whatever I was listening to and that's
00:05:43
how I started getting into singing
