00:00:02
and tricks my name is Nick and today I'm
00:00:04
going to give you some tips on caring
00:00:05
for philodendrons this series is
00:00:07
sponsored by repotme.com get all of your
00:00:09
indoor gardening supplies delivered to
00:00:11
your door from one place repotme.com has
00:00:14
practically anything you need for your
00:00:15
orchids succulents and house plants
00:00:17
including handmade potting mixes
00:00:19
Planters fertilizers and much more
00:00:22
I of course think all plants are created
00:00:24
equal but I early in my indoor gardening
00:00:27
career definitely grew a soft spot for
00:00:29
philodendron plants and all aroids aroid
00:00:32
referring to any plant that falls into
00:00:33
the erasia family like pothos syndapsis
00:00:37
sangonium monsteras but philodendrons
00:00:40
are arguably the most popular one to
00:00:43
collect and in comparison to the other
00:00:45
Genera of aroids these ones just always
00:00:48
seem to have new varieties popping up on
00:00:50
the market literally every week it feels
00:00:52
like at this point and while I wish I
00:00:54
only had nice things to say about these
00:00:56
plants because their leaves are
00:00:58
beautiful and they will make such an
00:00:59
impact on your home aesthetic with all
00:01:01
their different types of foliage it's
00:01:04
not all sunshine and rainbows
00:01:06
unfortunately so today I'm here to share
00:01:08
some tips that I have to hopefully make
00:01:10
caring for these sometimes finicky
00:01:12
plants a lot easier I have been growing
00:01:14
filled injuries in my home for six or
00:01:16
seven years now starting off with the
00:01:18
easier more common varieties like the
00:01:20
Philadelphia the Hartley filled engine
00:01:22
philodendron Imperial Red and then
00:01:24
dipping my toes into the Waters of the
00:01:26
more collector varieties like the
00:01:28
Philadelphia or the philodendron
00:01:30
gloriosum so we do have intermediate
00:01:33
experience with these plants let's say
00:01:34
but
00:01:36
that doesn't mean I've always had
00:01:37
success with them and I'm constantly
00:01:39
learning from my mistakes so that's like
00:01:41
what I want to share with you most today
00:01:43
I think my biggest mistake that I made
00:01:45
with philodendrons at first is not
00:01:48
understanding their growth patterns
00:01:50
there are a good handful of different
00:01:52
growth patterns that different field
00:01:54
engines follow the growth pattern we are
00:01:56
likely most familiar with is climbing or
00:01:58
trailing filled engines and those go
00:02:00
hand in hand so the trailing
00:02:03
philodendron that's probably coming to
00:02:05
mind most often is the Philadelphia are
00:02:07
hardly filled under there's plenty of
00:02:08
different varieties of that specific
00:02:10
filled engine but that one is often sold
00:02:12
in hanging baskets and will have
00:02:14
probably like two feet of foliage
00:02:15
already on it you can hang it up it'll
00:02:17
grow down to the floor producing foliage
00:02:19
all the way down and that plant is
00:02:21
perfectly fine to grow as a trailing
00:02:23
plant that's why it's such a common
00:02:24
filled engine because it's so easy to
00:02:26
grow in that beautiful manner but there
00:02:28
are a lot of climbing filled engines
00:02:29
that might be sold in a hanging basket
00:02:31
that might not appreciate that sort of
00:02:34
setting after they grow to be like a
00:02:35
full it long or two feet long they might
00:02:37
start to put off foliage less often
00:02:39
skipping nodes here and there and having
00:02:41
some sparse fines the leaves might grow
00:02:44
smaller and smaller and therefore the
00:02:46
leaf shape can change so a lot of these
00:02:48
climbing filled engines are often sold
00:02:50
in a manner as trailing and it's not
00:02:52
really a sustainable way to maintain the
00:02:55
plants that they want to climb you want
00:02:57
to give these climbing house plants a
00:02:59
moss pole a trellis even just hold them
00:03:02
up with a bamboo stake and that's going
00:03:03
to make them feel like they're growing
00:03:05
up a tree somewhat but giving them like
00:03:07
a moss Pole or a wood trellis and really
00:03:09
attaching them and allowing their roots
00:03:10
to attach that surface is really where
00:03:13
those specific plants are going to
00:03:15
experience a major change in the way
00:03:18
that they look these climbing
00:03:19
philodendrons in nature are going to
00:03:20
creep along the ground until they find a
00:03:23
host plant usually a tree with a good
00:03:24
amount of a trunk and good bark to grab
00:03:27
onto and hold into place little nooks
00:03:29
and crannies for those roots to slip
00:03:31
into and as these plants start to grow
00:03:33
up those trees that's when their leaves
00:03:35
are going to grow larger the colors
00:03:37
become more pronounced in many cases
00:03:38
sometimes they'll lose their color it
00:03:40
all depends but it's just a wonderful
00:03:42
way that trailing house plants grow and
00:03:44
that many people as new indoor gardeners
00:03:46
kind of Miss they'll buy a large hanging
00:03:49
basket of like a silver sword filled
00:03:51
engine and then try to just let it grow
00:03:52
but then it's just a bunch of
00:03:54
bluish little sticks just sticking it
00:03:56
everywhere because it's not growing the
00:03:58
way it wants that fillet engine wants to
00:03:59
climb up a trellis or a moss pool and
00:04:01
that's when it's going to start
00:04:02
producing more leaves so if you are
00:04:04
growing a philodendron and you are
00:04:06
experiencing exactly that I might have
00:04:07
just solved your problem but there are
00:04:09
of course more growth patterns that
00:04:11
you're philodendron could be following
00:04:13
there are self-heading philodendrons so
00:04:15
the philodendron Rojo Congo and filled
00:04:18
under an Imperial Red Philadelphia
00:04:20
these are some types of self-heading
00:04:22
fold engines that don't necessarily form
00:04:24
a Vine or a stem they kind of stay
00:04:27
really tight kind of like the way an
00:04:29
aloe plant grows or like a bird's nest
00:04:31
Fern or snake plant they kind of circle
00:04:33
their way around with their new leaves
00:04:35
is there technically a stem that they're
00:04:37
growing from yes but those leaves are
00:04:39
growing so tightly together that it's
00:04:41
just not really apparent it's not as
00:04:43
easy to chop these plants to propagate
00:04:45
them because they are so tightly grown
00:04:47
together although it is completely
00:04:48
possible and as these certain plants
00:04:50
grow they're going to form more of a
00:04:52
bush shape it is such a wonderful type
00:04:54
of dungeon to grow but it's not a
00:04:56
climbing full dungeon so you don't
00:04:57
really need to do anything which is
00:04:58
fantastic because it's probably really
00:05:00
the only type of philodendron that
00:05:02
really takes care of itself actually
00:05:04
that's not necessarily true because
00:05:06
there is another type of philodendron
00:05:07
called tree filled engines and these
00:05:10
field engines are technically not filled
00:05:12
engines anymore these have been
00:05:14
reclassified to the genus thematophylum
00:05:17
so if you've heard that or seen that
00:05:19
long gibberish looking word and you
00:05:21
thought hey I thought that was a
00:05:22
philodendron you're absolutely not wrong
00:05:24
and this plant right here is an example
00:05:26
of a thematophylum so this is now known
00:05:28
as the amount of phylum sprucionum but
00:05:30
formally it was known as philodendron
00:05:32
Goldie eye you're probably going to see
00:05:34
these plants listed as filled engines
00:05:35
for a long time and that's perfectly
00:05:37
fine you can refer to it as a
00:05:38
philodendron thematophile whatever
00:05:39
floats your boat the tree fold engine
00:05:41
that is probably the most common maybe
00:05:42
you're familiar with it is the
00:05:44
philodendron hope now referred to as the
00:05:46
somatophylum bipinata feed them but
00:05:48
philodendron Hope just rolls off the
00:05:50
tongue a lot easier and these type of
00:05:52
philodendrons do form an actual Woody
00:05:55
trunks so every time a leaf falls off
00:05:57
the plant similar to a dracena and the
00:05:59
way that every time a leaf falls up the
00:06:01
trunk forms a little bit more the same
00:06:03
thing happens here you can kind of see
00:06:04
in the base of mine mine does have that
00:06:06
small little Woody chunk storming the
00:06:08
form but you're probably going to see
00:06:09
this more apparent once you've had your
00:06:11
plant for a couple of years and of
00:06:13
course there is another growth pattern
00:06:14
there's also the creeping filled engine
00:06:16
so philodendron glorios and philodendron
00:06:19
meimei those are some of the more
00:06:20
relevant creeping filled engines and
00:06:23
these do not climb they do not form a
00:06:24
trunk they're not form a bush they creep
00:06:26
along the soil they're not looking to
00:06:28
climb up a tree they just want to keep
00:06:30
creeping along that soil or rooting into
00:06:32
the ground and as they continue their
00:06:33
way along the soil rooting their way
00:06:35
into the ground that's how these
00:06:36
particular plants are going to be
00:06:37
encouraged to grow larger more mature
00:06:40
foliage so how do you figure out which
00:06:42
growth pattern your plant is growing
00:06:44
well to be honest the easiest way is to
00:06:47
just Google the name of your plant and
00:06:48
figure out what type of philodendron it
00:06:50
is now climbing and creeping filled
00:06:53
engines are going to look very similar
00:06:54
while at the same time self-heading and
00:06:56
tree filled engines are also going to
00:06:58
look very similar the main difference
00:06:59
between the climbing and the creeping
00:07:01
filled engines is that the climbers like
00:07:03
to work their way out of the planter
00:07:04
while the creepers are going to try
00:07:05
their best to stay inside the planter
00:07:07
where the soil is and the tree filled
00:07:09
engines and the self-heading filled
00:07:12
engines that the self-heading filled
00:07:13
engines are not going to form that Woody
00:07:15
trunk over time that those tree filled
00:07:17
engines are of course going to very
00:07:19
prominently form the reason it's so
00:07:21
important to understand your plant's
00:07:22
growth pattern is that if you want your
00:07:24
plants leaves to look as pristine and
00:07:26
perfect as possible you need to ensure
00:07:28
that your plant is following the correct
00:07:29
growth pattern and that you understand
00:07:31
it tree philodendrons and self-heading
00:07:33
filled engines as well as the few filled
00:07:34
engines that will happily Trail for days
00:07:36
practically take care of themselves
00:07:38
they'll just need a little pruning here
00:07:40
and there when it comes to removing
00:07:41
those older leaves but the creeping
00:07:43
filled engine and the climbing field
00:07:44
entrance those are the ones you're gonna
00:07:45
have to keep up with climbing and
00:07:46
growing up to of course keep
00:07:48
continuously allowing them to climb or
00:07:50
pruning them back if they're getting too
00:07:51
tall and the creeping filled engines are
00:07:53
going to have to allow to to stay along
00:07:55
the soil maybe increasing the pot stars
00:07:57
using like a rectangular planter to
00:07:59
really give them some space to continue
00:08:00
to Trail if they don't have that soil
00:08:03
that's when those leaves are going to
00:08:04
become smaller and weaker looking so
00:08:05
with that out of the way we also need to
00:08:08
discuss the soil that you were using for
00:08:10
your philodendron so that is probably
00:08:12
next to understanding the growth pattern
00:08:14
I would say it's just as important I was
00:08:16
going to say that's more important but
00:08:18
the soil is very important because if
00:08:20
you don't have your plants in good soil
00:08:21
they're going to die I would not
00:08:24
recommend planting a fillet engine
00:08:26
unless it's just like a standard Hartley
00:08:28
for my consoled and easy as pie in
00:08:31
regular potting mix right from the bag
00:08:32
even if it's the best house plant mix on
00:08:34
planet Earth just as I believe repotme's
00:08:36
house pen and tropical mixes you're
00:08:38
gonna have to amend it with some things
00:08:40
that these roots want filled engine
00:08:42
roots are thick and robust and they're
00:08:44
looking for things to grab onto and they
00:08:46
are not going to appreciate sitting in a
00:08:48
soil that's going to stay a little too
00:08:49
moist they want to Air and Space to
00:08:51
breathe and all that good stuff so what
00:08:53
you are going want to do is to amend
00:08:56
your soil mixtures the three things I
00:08:58
would recommend keeping on hand as well
00:08:59
as your regular soil mixture is perlite
00:09:02
charcoal and orchid bark I much prefer
00:09:05
using a fine orchid bark in comparison
00:09:07
to a chunkier larger bark I swear by the
00:09:10
extra small Monterey Pine bark from
00:09:11
rapami.com I will leave that link to my
00:09:14
description below and if you click
00:09:15
through any of the links in the
00:09:16
description to repotme's website and
00:09:18
make any purchases to that link I will
00:09:19
earn a commission so thank you very much
00:09:21
in advance if you do make any purchases
00:09:22
highly recommend the bark if you are an
00:09:24
airoid lover that is for certain the
00:09:27
ratio of all of these things that I love
00:09:28
to follow when I am making my
00:09:29
philodendron mix is two parts of my
00:09:32
standard house plant soil mix one part
00:09:34
perlite one part orchid bark and a good
00:09:37
handful of charcoal up to one Parts
00:09:39
perfectly fine but I usually go a little
00:09:40
bit lighter on the charcoal that perlite
00:09:42
and orchid bark is really going to add
00:09:44
some good aeration into your soil really
00:09:46
giving those roots something to grab
00:09:47
onto while also allowing them to breathe
00:09:49
and really work their way through the
00:09:50
cracks and crevices inside their
00:09:52
Planters the charcoal helps keep this
00:09:54
soil light and Airy as well but also
00:09:56
keeps the soil clean if I am working
00:09:59
with a fillet engine that likes a little
00:10:01
extra moisture in the soil or if I'm
00:10:03
working with a planter that dries out
00:10:05
extremely fast like this planter right
00:10:07
here that's made of this unglazed not
00:10:10
quite terracotta but something unglazed
00:10:12
it just sucks the moisture out of the
00:10:14
planter I will throw a nice handful of
00:10:15
savagnum moss into the mixture and I
00:10:17
just find that helps keep the moisture
00:10:19
up but it's not going to keep the soil
00:10:21
wet itself that sphagna Moss is just
00:10:23
going to hold on to a little extra
00:10:24
moisture itself and The Roots love that
00:10:27
sphagnum Moss they love grabbing onto it
00:10:28
so I find that really helps so a little
00:10:31
tip from me to you my biggest complaint
00:10:33
with growing philodendrons is that they
00:10:36
are pest magnets I think the root of the
00:10:39
pest problems that I experienced in my
00:10:41
home
00:10:42
come from my philodendron plants
00:10:44
particularly on the new leaves this is
00:10:47
something I experience every spring and
00:10:49
summer time and my full dungeons starts
00:10:51
spitting out new leaves I'm constantly
00:10:53
checking those new leaves for thrips in
00:10:56
particular but spider mites and mealybug
00:10:58
as well they've also been culprits on my
00:11:00
new leaves my assumption is that many
00:11:02
filled engines have complex Leaf shapes
00:11:05
and also many of their leaves are on the
00:11:07
thinner side and while they are emerging
00:11:09
as new leaves they're very tightly
00:11:10
rolled up and that is a perfect space
00:11:13
for those nasty pests to hide so I'm
00:11:15
always keeping a very close eye on the
00:11:17
new leaves on my plants this is the
00:11:19
newest leaf on my philodendron Goldie
00:11:21
eye right here and of course I have
00:11:22
found some pests on it and I try
00:11:24
everything I use systemics in the soil I
00:11:27
use houseplant sprays insecticides I
00:11:29
also have spinners and sprays I will
00:11:31
wipe down the leaves with rubbing
00:11:32
alcohol they never go away I use
00:11:35
beneficial insects in my home they never
00:11:37
go away so philodendrons
00:11:39
our path magnet
00:11:41
at least in my experience so please just
00:11:44
beware I hope that you go unaware of
00:11:48
these pests for as long as possible
00:11:49
hopefully because they are not there and
00:11:51
not because you're not noticing them but
00:11:53
in my experience it is just inevitable
00:11:55
so take as many preventative measures as
00:11:58
you possibly can and always go the extra
00:12:00
mile to make sure that your filled
00:12:01
entrants are as clean as possible my
00:12:04
last tip for today is probably the
00:12:06
hottest take but
00:12:07
it is one thousand percent something
00:12:09
I've learned from experience and if I
00:12:11
could go back in time I would tell
00:12:12
myself
00:12:14
I would really recommend sticking with
00:12:17
the tried and true more common
00:12:19
philodendrons I know we all get plant
00:12:22
fever especially when you start tipping
00:12:24
your toes in filled engines there are so
00:12:27
many varieties out there once you see
00:12:28
like aroid addicts and aeroid collectors
00:12:31
on Instagram you're gonna start seeing
00:12:32
so many what wacky and fun Leaf shaped
00:12:35
varieties and it's so tempting to try
00:12:37
them out some of them cost a lot of
00:12:40
money and as I was just talking about
00:12:42
many of them are pest magnets I'd say
00:12:44
the harder to find varieties in
00:12:46
particular are pest magnets and that's
00:12:48
because these plants I mean no plants
00:12:51
are meant to be grown inside all plants
00:12:52
no matter if it's a house plant or not
00:12:55
even if it's been cultivated as a house
00:12:56
plant for so many years plants are meant
00:12:59
to grow outside so when we grow plants
00:13:01
inside they are stressed out so if you
00:13:03
live in Florida and you have space in
00:13:06
your backyard by all means go all out
00:13:07
get all these fun-filled engines because
00:13:09
they're going to grow so well for you
00:13:11
they're not going to grow as well for me
00:13:13
in my apartment here in Philadelphia and
00:13:15
I've learned the hard way and many of
00:13:17
these plants also have like attributes
00:13:19
about them Beyond just being pest
00:13:21
magnets and getting stressed all the
00:13:22
time that I don't like that stress me
00:13:25
out like a lot of these hard to find
00:13:26
filled entrants they produce a lot of
00:13:28
sugar sap and they get really sticky and
00:13:31
the whole undersides of the leaves are
00:13:32
just coated in this stickiness and
00:13:35
doesn't matter if you use rubbing
00:13:36
alcohol might put away it's just going
00:13:37
to come back and it's going to get all
00:13:39
over you all the time and it's not fun
00:13:43
I still love these plants I just don't
00:13:46
love many of their attributes and I kind
00:13:49
of wish that I never brought some of
00:13:51
these filled engines in my home because
00:13:52
now I just have to deal with sticky
00:13:54
messes all the time and I paid money for
00:13:56
these and I'm not willing to get rid of
00:13:58
them because they've grown so well for
00:13:59
me and they have a place in my heart but
00:14:01
I wish they didn't sounds so terrible to
00:14:03
say but I really wish they didn't
00:14:05
because the longer that I have been
00:14:08
doing indoor gardening I'm realizing
00:14:09
that I plan on living a long life
00:14:13
kind of my goal and these plants kind of
00:14:17
also have that same goal and I'm stuck
00:14:20
with them unless I give them up which
00:14:23
like I said they have a place in my
00:14:24
heart so I'm like less likely to give
00:14:26
them up the longer I have them and I
00:14:28
don't want to be stuck with a bunch of
00:14:30
gross slimy sticky pest ridden house
00:14:32
plants I want to focus on more growing
00:14:34
the plants that are going to make my
00:14:37
home look as good as possible and look
00:14:39
their best over time and look 10 years
00:14:42
down the line like something that no one
00:14:44
else has in their home and looks just
00:14:45
like just so one of a kind I'm not going
00:14:47
to experience that with filled engines
00:14:49
and I'm constantly cutting back to the
00:14:52
base because they're growing too big and
00:14:54
the inner nodes are getting too long and
00:14:56
it's not producing leaves because it's
00:14:57
outgrown the Moss pole what not so many
00:14:59
reasons to stick with the tried and true
00:15:02
varieties that have been grown in the
00:15:04
home for years and not like a matter of
00:15:07
months and by all means learn this for
00:15:09
yourself we all have to make our own
00:15:12
mistakes and have our own experience
00:15:13
chances and we see the philodendrons
00:15:16
that catch our eye and we're like I have
00:15:18
to have it just as we do with all plants
00:15:21
I just mean that fold angels are
00:15:22
particularly addicting I just don't want
00:15:24
you to waste hundreds or thousands of
00:15:26
dollars on plants that you're going to
00:15:27
find out down the line are not really
00:15:30
that maintainable in the home I would
00:15:32
much rather you spend like 200 on a huge
00:15:36
large established filled and Jim Rojo
00:15:39
Congo or monstera deliciosa some filled
00:15:42
engineer aeroid that's going to look
00:15:43
gorgeous and be very maintainable and
00:15:45
sustainable in your home instead of
00:15:46
spending that 200 on a very small little
00:15:49
four inch pot of a variegated hoozy
00:15:51
what's it but that's going to do it for
