the following tutorial is brought to you
00:00:02
by whole loops.com
00:00:09
[Music]
00:00:15
production time i'm reid stefan realest
00:00:18
puppet in the game
00:00:20
today i'm mixing vocals with the slate
00:00:22
digital all access pass we're going to
00:00:25
be doing this using ableton 11 but these
00:00:27
slate plugins work the same in every daw
00:00:29
so you'll be able to follow along no
00:00:31
matter what software you use the
00:00:33
recordings that we have are for a track
00:00:34
titled wusaw performed by kara produced
00:00:37
by myself and cashmere and if you want
00:00:40
to hear a quick preview of what the
00:00:41
finished mix sounds like here it is
00:00:50
[Music]
00:00:56
so now that you've heard the results
00:00:57
that we're going to be achieving let's
00:00:59
open up this group where we'll find all
00:01:00
the raw recordings of lead vocals
00:01:03
doubles harmonies background vocals and
00:01:06
ad-libs we have a lot of vocals to mix
00:01:08
through so let's take a listen to these
00:01:10
dry recordings
00:01:13
[Music]
00:01:35
[Music]
00:01:37
the first process i like to apply to
00:01:38
lead vocals is some tuning before any eq
00:01:42
compression or special effects i'm going
00:01:44
to use the meditune plugin here on my
00:01:46
lead vocals
00:01:48
all you have to do is choose the key of
00:01:50
your song which in this case is f sharp
00:01:53
minor and adjust the tuning speed here
00:01:56
with this first knob a high tuning speed
00:01:59
will give you an extreme robotic effect
00:02:02
and a lower knob position will be more
00:02:04
suitable for an organic more naturally
00:02:06
tuned vocal i'm gonna go somewhere in
00:02:08
the middle to start
00:02:12
[Music]
00:02:26
[Music]
00:02:32
so as you could hear there's a lot of
00:02:33
variety in tone to be played with when
00:02:37
controlling the tuning speed while
00:02:38
you're tracking you have the option of
00:02:40
using low latency but since i'm just
00:02:42
mixing i'm going to turn this off now
00:02:44
and let the plugin do its full thing i'm
00:02:46
going to keep my retune speed at about
00:02:47
15. this is somewhere between a pop and
00:02:50
a hip hop song with a lot of edm
00:02:52
influence in the instrumental so i think
00:02:54
a more processed sounding vocal is going
00:02:56
to be appropriate for this but we're
00:02:57
going to be automating this plug-in on
00:02:59
and off using the global bypass button
00:03:02
because this vocal is not singing the
00:03:03
whole time which means we're not going
00:03:04
to need tuning the whole time so the
00:03:06
easiest way to automate anything in
00:03:08
ableton is to click on it and then hit
00:03:10
the letter a for your automation and now
00:03:13
you have a line that you can enable for
00:03:15
when you want your tuning bypass so keep
00:03:17
it down to have it on
00:03:19
and then turn it off
00:03:24
[Music]
00:03:34
i love that breath that kind of
00:03:35
interrupts the lyrics it's like a
00:03:37
organic vocal effect that you could just
00:03:39
very easily do with the grid you even
00:03:41
have the option to increase your tuning
00:03:43
speed during the hook maybe you want it
00:03:46
to blend in better with all the vocals
00:03:53
[Music]
00:03:57
this hook has some long bendy swoopy
00:03:59
notes in it and a lot of times tuning
00:04:01
plugins and swoopy notes don't go so
00:04:03
well together so in this hook i'm
00:04:05
actually going to turn it down maybe in
00:04:06
your hook you'd want to turn it up and
00:04:08
since every layer individually needs its
00:04:11
own tuner i'm going to use the copy and
00:04:13
paste shortcut to put a meditune on each
00:04:15
layer of vocals so i'm going to go in
00:04:17
here
00:04:18
paste it on each double this is the only
00:04:20
plugin that we're putting individually
00:04:23
on each channel
00:04:37
[Music]
00:04:39
by itself is putting a huge difference
00:04:41
on how polished this vocal sounds
00:04:43
already but tuning is only the beginning
00:04:45
of the sauce so i don't have to copy and
00:04:47
paste the same chain onto all three of
00:04:49
these lead vocals i'm going to use the
00:04:51
group as a place to process all my leads
00:04:53
together meta tune is on each individual
00:04:56
channel but the rest of these plugins
00:04:57
are going to go on my leads group which
00:05:00
is effectively the same as pasting at
00:05:02
the same time on all three of these
00:05:03
channels but it saves cpu
00:05:06
inside this eq i'm not going to do
00:05:07
anything crazy surgical i like to just
00:05:10
double click where this high pass filter
00:05:11
indicator is and pull it up around 100
00:05:14
hertz for female vocals maybe a little
00:05:16
bit less give or take depending on the
00:05:18
voice
00:05:20
[Music]
00:05:34
i also like to have this little
00:05:36
resonance peak where it's getting cut
00:05:38
off i feel like that helps make up for
00:05:39
some of the perceived bass that gets
00:05:41
lost from this but around 90 hertz is
00:05:43
going to be perfect for a female voice
00:05:45
if you're a guy you might have a lower
00:05:47
number around 80 maybe even 70 and for
00:05:50
higher pitched female singing you might
00:05:52
have a higher number you can even
00:05:53
automate this to create low cut effects
00:05:56
throughout your song but that's going to
00:05:57
be a perfect start for our eq we're not
00:06:00
doing anything too crazy here we're not
00:06:01
doing anything dynamic or multi-band yet
00:06:04
next i'm going to pull up the plug-in
00:06:06
that's going to be doing a lot of the
00:06:07
heavy lifting and that is the virtual
00:06:10
mix rack the virtual mix rack is my
00:06:12
absolute favorite slate plug-in because
00:06:13
it allows you to load up a whole chain
00:06:16
of sauce and save it in one very
00:06:18
convenient preset and that's exactly
00:06:20
what we're going to do we've got our low
00:06:22
cut going here the next thing i want to
00:06:24
add is a little bit of preamp and
00:06:26
coloring eq like the fgn i'm going to
00:06:29
use this drive button to activate the
00:06:31
preamp saturation and this is going to
00:06:33
do what an analog preamp would be doing
00:06:35
to the signal by using these gains to
00:06:38
just add some more drive and grit to the
00:06:40
signal from the start
00:06:42
[Music]
00:06:50
in addition to that i'm also gonna do a
00:06:51
little mid-range boost here at around 4k
00:06:58
[Music]
00:07:06
and a little bit at the very top
00:07:10
[Music]
00:07:19
and we're doing little tiny boosts like
00:07:20
less than 1 db on each i really like the
00:07:23
way bells sound instead of shelves
00:07:26
for boosting and i love the way the
00:07:29
classic neve eq sounds for this let's
00:07:32
load up some compression i like to
00:07:34
alternate between eq and compression
00:07:36
when i process vocals and kind of split
00:07:38
the load amongst a bunch of different
00:07:40
plugins i'm going to hit this with some
00:07:42
smooth compression first like the fg-2a
00:07:45
and we're going to do just a tiny little
00:07:46
bit of peak reduction
00:07:48
[Music]
00:07:50
pull this knob down so we're not hitting
00:07:51
this so hard
00:07:54
[Music]
00:07:58
let's turn it on
00:08:03
[Music]
00:08:12
i'm really just trying to keep the
00:08:14
needle around three decibels of gain
00:08:16
reduction
00:08:17
[Music]
00:08:22
and that's just a perfect soft
00:08:24
compression to help take the huge peaks
00:08:26
off the vocal and now i'm going to
00:08:28
follow that up with some more eq i
00:08:30
always love bumping my highs and mids
00:08:31
going into a compressor because i always
00:08:33
feel like that's the tone that gets lost
00:08:35
from compression so it just makes up for
00:08:37
it going in next i'm going to add a
00:08:39
different kind of eq and this is
00:08:41
actually a free slate plug-in that's
00:08:43
been one of my og favorite free plug-ins
00:08:45
for a long time and it's called revival
00:08:48
and this is a harmonic saturation based
00:08:51
eq to add warmth and brightness to
00:08:53
anything like a voice
00:08:56
[Music]
00:09:04
i'm gonna use this for the thickness
00:09:10
[Music]
00:09:18
and that's just adding a little bit more
00:09:20
color and warmth going into the next
00:09:23
chain which is going to be some more
00:09:24
compression and that is the monster
00:09:26
compressor this is emulated after an
00:09:29
1176 with the all knobs in button
00:09:32
engaged and that's what this punch
00:09:34
button is here and we're going to be
00:09:35
using this as a parallel compressor so
00:09:37
we're going to be blending in half and
00:09:38
half
00:09:40
[Music]
00:10:01
gotta get away
00:10:06
let's turn the whole rack off
00:10:08
[Music]
00:10:20
[Music]
00:10:27
so that gave us some great dynamic
00:10:28
control and tone shaping the final
00:10:31
plug-in i like to have in this is a
00:10:33
little bit of de-essing and in my
00:10:35
opinion the best de-esser of all the
00:10:37
slate plug-ins is here inside virtual
00:10:39
mix rack
00:10:41
fg ds-902
00:10:44
we're going to drop this here at the end
00:10:45
of the rack
00:10:46
and let's turn the range up
00:10:51
[Music]
00:11:00
turn the frequency up for a female voice
00:11:05
[Music]
00:11:22
and we've created a perfect vocal sauce
00:11:25
consists of compression eq harmonic
00:11:28
saturation and de-essing sometimes i
00:11:30
even like to go in and hit it with one
00:11:33
final eq just like it's going through a
00:11:35
console like the ssl console eq the fgs
00:11:40
and this will be your final tone and
00:11:42
coloring i always like using bells like
00:11:44
i said to boost or reduce any high
00:11:46
frequencies and we're going to go way
00:11:48
higher with this than we've gone before
00:11:54
get that really really high-end
00:11:55
information
00:11:57
[Music]
00:12:02
but everything
00:12:04
right now there may be a little bit of
00:12:05
warmth too
00:12:38
that's my occupation oh you mad man why
00:12:40
i could see your aggravation cause i got
00:12:43
paper from all the haters camera for
00:12:45
mayor and there's nothing you can do
00:12:48
about it they keep
00:12:54
so we've created a basic low cut and an
00:12:57
entire mix rack of all of our eq and
00:12:59
compression here all in one spot i'm
00:13:02
going to follow this up with some
00:13:03
multi-band compression and that's going
00:13:06
to be the m-o-t-t
00:13:08
and this thing starts out with an
00:13:10
extremely aggressive preset but we're
00:13:13
just going to turn this down and dial
00:13:14
this up from zero instead of dialing it
00:13:16
back from 100 because like i said it's
00:13:18
like really strong when you first load
00:13:20
it up just like the ott preset in
00:13:22
ableton
00:13:27
[Music]
00:13:46
the mids a little bit
00:13:52
[Music]
00:13:57
and we're just using this at a 10 amount
00:14:00
very subtle but also doing a lot at the
00:14:03
same time let's try turning this whole
00:14:05
chain on and off
00:14:09
[Music]
00:14:21
and one last plug-in i'm gonna drop on
00:14:23
here is gonna be for just that little
00:14:25
sparkle and sizzle that makes the vocals
00:14:27
just feel perfectly polished and this
00:14:29
plugin is called fresh air it's free and
00:14:32
anyone can use it even if you don't have
00:14:34
the all access pass you can add mid
00:14:36
presence or you can add high presence
00:14:41
[Music]
00:14:55
try
00:15:07
[Music]
00:15:12
and keep in mind this chain is only
00:15:14
processing this small group of vocal
00:15:16
layers pretty much just the lead vocals
00:15:18
everything else is just meditune so far
00:15:21
i'm gonna keep processing these lead
00:15:23
vocals before we start copying
00:15:24
everything down and making adjustments
00:15:26
but these vocals are very nicely sauced
00:15:28
up and ready for some wet effects
00:15:31
do you use slate plugins but find
00:15:33
yourself getting lost in all that sauce
00:15:37
have you wasted countless hours
00:15:39
scrolling through presets waiting to
00:15:41
hear something good for your voice
00:15:44
introducing slate vocal sauce the
00:15:46
perfectly sauced up template that'll
00:15:48
transform your raw recordings to a
00:15:51
polished and organic mix slate vocal
00:15:54
sauce is available now only at homes.com
00:16:00
i like to create my effects using aux
00:16:02
channels and ableton has my favorite
00:16:04
shortcut for creating built-in aux
00:16:06
channels to each track called channel
00:16:09
groups let's use this reverb as an
00:16:11
example this has a mix knob on it but i
00:16:13
feel like there's a better way to do it
00:16:15
drop the plugin on your channel press
00:16:17
command g to turn it into a audio effect
00:16:20
rack and then right click and create a
00:16:22
new chain
00:16:23
and rename it dry by pressing command r
00:16:26
so you have dry and you have
00:16:28
verb suite
00:16:30
color themed with the plugin
00:16:32
and let's add some reverb to this vocal
00:16:34
using the level of the 100 wet signal we
00:16:38
can just turn it down maybe 10 or 15
00:16:40
below
00:16:44
[Music]
00:16:52
increase the decay time for longer
00:16:54
reverb tails
00:16:59
that's already sounding really clean i
00:17:01
like to adjust a few more parameters in
00:17:03
this reverb i love making it really
00:17:05
present in the mid and lows and pulling
00:17:07
back the highs a little bit so that
00:17:09
doesn't compete so much i find that s's
00:17:12
and t's really stick out like a sore
00:17:14
thumb and reverb and turning down the
00:17:16
highs just takes care of that perfectly
00:17:18
we can also create a little bit of
00:17:19
pre-decay which creates a little bit of
00:17:22
delay before the reverb actually kicks
00:17:24
in and let's take a listen to our vocal
00:17:26
now
00:17:29
[Music]
00:17:43
it back
00:17:50
and we've got a very clean bright and
00:17:52
shiny reverb that holds down the
00:17:54
background of the voice adding a little
00:17:55
bit of width and sparkle to it i just
00:17:58
love the verb suite classics and we're
00:18:00
going to continue loading this rack up
00:18:02
with fun effects now i'm going to create
00:18:04
a little bit of delay to really help
00:18:06
this vocal just fill in the gaps or have
00:18:08
special effects at special moments or
00:18:11
even here where we have the clean
00:18:13
version and some lyrics are cut out
00:18:14
we'll use delays to fill this in too i
00:18:16
am way to john mccool let's go grab a
00:18:19
delay plug-in some very slipped-on
00:18:21
plug-ins inside the all-access pass are
00:18:24
the killerhearts plug-ins they have a
00:18:26
really simple delay plug in here that we
00:18:28
could load up in our rack i'm just going
00:18:29
to trap this delay right here
00:18:32
and we can start with a quarter note
00:18:34
delay we might actually create a few
00:18:35
variations and fill up this rack with a
00:18:38
whole bunch of different effects i'm
00:18:40
going to make this a different color and
00:18:42
we're going to sync this and we're going
00:18:44
to make this quarter note which is 4
00:18:46
16th notes we can keep the ping pong off
00:18:48
and just turn the delay down a little
00:18:50
bit and this is why i love this because
00:18:52
it has a ducking knob which reduces the
00:18:55
volume of the delays when the dry vocal
00:18:58
is going on i'm also going to turn the
00:19:00
mix up to 100
00:19:02
because this is on an aux channel and
00:19:04
let's pull the volume down a little bit
00:19:05
and see what we got
00:19:09
[Music]
00:19:18
and we could turn the feedback down a
00:19:19
little bit i'm also gonna i'm gonna
00:19:21
follow this up with a few more
00:19:22
killhearts plugins like a filter that
00:19:24
will help us keep all of our delays a
00:19:26
little bit less bright than the original
00:19:29
reason why
00:19:31
everything wasn't feeling right
00:19:34
but everything going right right now and
00:19:36
we're even gonna give these quarter note
00:19:37
delays their own
00:19:39
little reverb with the killerhearts
00:19:40
reverb and we're going to put the mix
00:19:43
knob at a lower percent because i don't
00:19:45
want to completely wash out the delays
00:19:48
why
00:19:49
everything wasn't feeling right right
00:19:52
but everything going right right now
00:19:54
right right now
00:19:58
we can even get extra freaky and add
00:19:59
some distortion before these delays so
00:20:01
that they sound even less dry
00:20:05
[Music]
00:20:16
[Applause]
00:20:18
coming up like
00:20:20
and finally to add some stereo width to
00:20:22
these we could throw the kill heart
00:20:24
stereo plug in at the end
00:20:26
and man we just created some super saucy
00:20:29
delays
00:20:33
let's turn the width up thinking that
00:20:34
you're the reason why
00:20:37
everything wasn't feeling right
00:20:40
but everything going right right now
00:20:41
right now
00:20:43
and we just created a super saucy
00:20:45
quarter note to lay all these plugins
00:20:47
just for one little delay and again we
00:20:49
can mute it and choose the volume of it
00:20:51
using the levels on this rack and our
00:20:54
dry vocal is always here consistently at
00:20:56
full volume no matter what we do with
00:20:58
our effects now that we've got a really
00:20:59
solid vocal chain set setup let's copy
00:21:01
this down and apply it to our background
00:21:04
vocals stacks and ad-libs i'm going to
00:21:06
start out with the stacks and one thing
00:21:08
i know that with my stacked vocals i'm
00:21:10
not going to want as much low end and
00:21:12
i'm also not going to want as much
00:21:14
high-end so i might just do a shelf
00:21:16
because that just reduces it without
00:21:18
completely removing it i don't want it
00:21:19
out of there i just want it down a
00:21:21
little bit and that's going to be going
00:21:23
into this whole chain i don't want them
00:21:25
to be as parallel compressed as my lead
00:21:28
vocals are so i'm going to pull the mix
00:21:30
down on all these some more everything
00:21:32
else we're going to play it and just
00:21:34
kind of go by ear but i know just by
00:21:35
default i don't want my stacks to have
00:21:38
as much of those things as my leads i
00:21:40
want to add one more special plug-in to
00:21:42
the effects rack here in these
00:21:43
background vocals and that's going to be
00:21:45
another delay and this is going to be a
00:21:47
really tight slap delay that kind of
00:21:49
helps emphasize the group effect of all
00:21:52
these layers so i'm going to put slap in
00:21:54
here and i'm going to put milliseconds
00:21:57
and ping pong and we're gonna do a
00:21:59
really fast really short delay so let's
00:22:02
switch this to sync and go way way down
00:22:04
like 50ish
00:22:09
[Music]
00:22:16
just that little bit of slap delay adds
00:22:17
so much nice thickness
00:22:20
[Music]
00:22:28
let's take a listen to the stacks in
00:22:30
this last hook
00:22:34
[Music]
00:22:36
let's turn off the stacks processing
00:22:44
these stacks aren't really too different
00:22:46
from the leads like rhythmically they're
00:22:48
following the top line exactly they're
00:22:50
just doing different octaves and
00:22:52
harmonies and things that help them feel
00:22:54
more stacked like a chorus so that's
00:22:56
simply all we're going to do just a very
00:22:58
light variation of the lead vocal chain
00:23:00
processing this whole group and like i
00:23:02
said earlier everything is panned and
00:23:04
tuned individually but processed here on
00:23:07
the group to save cpu and give you one
00:23:10
easy point to control everything let's
00:23:12
make a duplicate of this chain and bring
00:23:14
it down onto the background vocals we're
00:23:15
going to do something even more extreme
00:23:17
with the processing on these i'm going
00:23:19
to take out even more of the high end
00:23:22
with the infinity eq we're actually
00:23:24
going to switch this to a full-blown
00:23:26
filter instead of a shelf because we do
00:23:28
want to completely completely roll off
00:23:30
and we're also going to be making these
00:23:32
pretty thin too because these are after
00:23:34
all our background vocals
00:23:36
[Music]
00:23:47
and you hear how those are completely
00:23:48
pushed back into the background now
00:23:50
using effects and filtering no
00:23:53
competition with the lead especially
00:23:55
when we put the music in everything just
00:23:57
sits nice and perfectly in the
00:23:58
background
00:24:06
[Music]
00:24:14
might even add just one more reverb on
00:24:16
here just to be extra saucy on the verb
00:24:19
sometimes the verb sweet is really only
00:24:21
good for like short and medium stuff and
00:24:22
you need something to come in and give
00:24:24
you a long heavy duty reverb tailing
00:24:28
[Music]
00:24:37
quiet in the
00:24:41
[Music]
00:24:44
mix sounding ever so perfect in the
00:24:47
background tucked behind the lead so
00:24:49
that brings us down to our ad-lib vocals
00:24:51
and these are going to be processed very
00:24:53
similarly to our background vocals but
00:24:55
these are slightly more like leads than
00:24:58
stacks where everything is supposed to
00:25:00
sound good individually on its own be
00:25:02
heard and understood let's take a listen
00:25:04
to how it sounds through the background
00:25:06
vocal chain
00:25:07
[Applause]
00:25:08
[Music]
00:25:11
just to make sure these are as thin as
00:25:12
possible i might copy this eq before and
00:25:14
after the chain
00:25:16
[Applause]
00:25:18
[Music]
00:25:21
make them a little bit thinner
00:25:26
[Applause]
00:25:30
let those quarter notes delays rock even
00:25:32
some slap delays
00:25:35
and we're sauced up
00:25:37
[Music]
00:25:52
i might even make a little crazy
00:25:54
shouting effect and turn the meta tune
00:25:56
all the way up on these
00:25:57
[Music]
00:26:00
everything wasn't feeling right
00:26:03
let's turn this down a little bit the
00:26:04
mix
00:26:07
[Music]
00:26:19
super saucy
00:26:20
so we've created chains to mix our leads
00:26:23
stacks background vocals and ad-libs the
00:26:26
last thing i want to do is something
00:26:27
super special just for this outro ad-lib
00:26:30
that we have here in the leads
00:26:35
[Music]
00:26:39
and since this is really its own thing
00:26:40
i'm going to do this chain going right
00:26:42
into this channel i'm going to start out
00:26:44
by putting a phaser on here just to give
00:26:46
us that cool stereo thing and also a
00:26:49
little bit of a filter too
00:26:52
[Music]
00:26:59
i'm gonna actually duplicate this filter
00:27:00
make the first one a low cut and the
00:27:02
second one a high cut and the low cut's
00:27:05
always going to stay the same and i'm
00:27:06
going to automate the high cut
00:27:09
[Music]
00:27:30
to close it out like this
00:27:32
and there you have a perfectly sauced up
00:27:34
vocal
00:27:35
top to bottom with 100
00:27:38
slate digital all-access plug-ins we're
00:27:41
going to take one last final listen to
00:27:43
the song to see how far we've come and
00:27:45
also compare it to the drive vocals from
00:27:47
the beginning before we wrap this course
00:27:49
up
00:27:50
[Music]
00:28:09
feel like
00:28:20
[Music]
00:28:25
oh
00:28:28
[Music]
00:28:37
hold me down
00:28:41
[Music]
00:28:55
oh
00:29:01
[Music]
00:29:08
that's my occupation oh you mad man
00:29:12
[Music]
00:29:24
quiet
00:29:25
[Music]
00:29:33
focus on everything
00:29:37
[Music]
00:29:45
imma focus on anything
00:29:49
[Music]
00:30:03
hmm
00:30:05
it's so saucy
00:30:07
[Music]
00:30:10
and there you have it mixing a vocal
