Фромм говорит, что психоаналитический подход к религии стал пониманием человеческой реальности, лежащей за пределами мышления. Это означает, что человеческая реальность, к примеру, лежащая за учениями Будды, Сократа и Христа – одна и та же, а именно – стремление к любви, истине и справедливости. И если традиционный психоанализ З. Фрейда ставил своей задачей подстроить пациента под существующие образцы поведения, снижая, тем самым, чрезмерные душевные страдания невротика до среднего уровня страдания, то задача гуманистического психоанализа принципиально другая. Ключевой целью здесь является развитие личностных способностей и максимальная реализация индивидуальности. Достижение душевного здоровья по Фромму не может быть отделено от целей человеческой жизни – независимости, цельности и способности любить. Фромм полагает, что трагедия всех великих религий заключается в том, что как только они становятся массовыми организациями, они нарушают и извращают принципы свободы. (Человек начинает поклоняться не богу, но группе, которая говорит от его имени). Он показывает, что во многих религиях мы видим авторитарные и гуманистические элементы. Именно типология данных религий и составляет смысловое содержание данной лекции.
