00:00:01
richest men on the planet and we just
00:00:04
arrived at his 100 million dollar
00:00:05
mansion here in Palm Beach so he can
00:00:07
tell me exactly how he got here thank
00:00:09
you so much for having us at your house
00:00:11
today this is without a doubt the most
00:00:13
beautiful house I've ever seen in my
00:00:14
life really yes thank you as of today
00:00:18
how much in assets is your company
00:00:21
interactive brokers have under
00:00:22
management uh we're roughly 350 billion
00:00:27
dollars wow you've come a long way
00:00:29
though let's take it back to the
00:00:31
beginning let's tie sure yeah let's go
00:00:34
back to 1944 the year you were born 1944
00:00:38
I was born in in Budapest
00:00:41
uh during the time when the city was
00:00:45
under siege and it was being bombed and
00:00:48
I was born in the basement of the
00:00:51
hospital because there was a bombing
00:00:54
rate there was a bombing happening while
00:00:56
you were being born right all right and
00:00:58
growing up under those conditions what
00:01:01
was that like you grew up with your
00:01:02
mother and your father I just grew up
00:01:04
with my mother and you guys didn't have
00:01:06
much money back then we had no respect
00:01:09
that badly had any food is it true that
00:01:12
you made your first money in high school
00:01:14
from selling Juicy Fruit gum to
00:01:16
classmates that'd be amazing yes that is
00:01:19
true yes I was 12 years old at the time
00:01:22
it was at the time of the Hungarian
00:01:24
Revolution the Hungarian people were
00:01:28
basically fenced in so that they
00:01:32
couldn't go out and I had an older
00:01:34
friend who was about 18 years old in the
00:01:37
building who went out to Vienna with the
00:01:40
Red Cross truck and came back with Juicy
00:01:43
food grubs and he saw them to me for two
00:01:47
dollars a stick and I cut them into five
00:01:49
pieces and sold them for one dollar a
00:01:52
stick that's amazing how much money do
00:01:53
you remember making from that a couple
00:01:56
of hundred wow yeah well actually I
00:01:59
brought you a gift I served you with you
00:02:01
through God searched for a few days and
00:02:03
I found the original packaging from
00:02:06
1970. Juicy Fruit gum this is actually
00:02:10
the thing yeah it's amazing
00:02:13
maybe we should open it up and share a
00:02:15
piece together yeah all right no no no
00:02:16
it's too old it's too cold you think it
00:02:19
wouldn't be good anymore I think it
00:02:21
might be the last piece of Juicy Fruit
00:02:23
you ever have in your life that's crazy
00:02:25
thank you very much you're welcome I
00:02:27
will keep it at the souvenirs it's
00:02:29
amazing that you found them those those
00:02:32
must be your neighbors flying in the
00:02:33
helicopter yeah well Trump doesn't like
00:02:36
it when it flies over here yeah no he
00:02:39
just sleeps down there three hours is
00:02:41
down that way yeah just around the
00:02:43
corner from Trump right not bad yeah
00:02:46
so After High School you moved to the
00:02:49
United States I was 21 when I came to
00:02:52
the United States what type of
00:02:53
challenges did you face when you moved
00:02:56
to America did you speak English did you
00:02:57
have money saved up did not speak
00:02:59
English and I did not have money so that
00:03:02
was a challenge both of them very
00:03:04
challenged so so how did you get by how
00:03:06
did you make your money when you came to
00:03:08
America uh I got a job as a draftsman so
00:03:12
I will start doing surveying back in
00:03:14
Hungary I understood maps and I was
00:03:17
hired by a highway designing firm to
00:03:20
throw Maps basically highways so how did
00:03:24
you turn that into learning computer
00:03:26
programming how did you learn about
00:03:27
programming in New York they didn't
00:03:29
teach that in Hungary they didn't teach
00:03:31
it anywhere at that time yet the company
00:03:33
where I just got this job both a little
00:03:37
uh computer in those days there were no
00:03:41
commercially available computers in the
00:03:44
United States so they bought this
00:03:46
computer and they realized that nobody
00:03:48
knew how to program it and I volunteered
00:03:51
to learn how to do it and I did how did you
00:03:54
learn manuals I just did the manual and
00:03:57
started writing the program and that
00:04:00
skill ended up being the one that
00:04:02
changed your life forever and got you to
00:04:04
this point today but first I want to
00:04:06
know about how you went from working
00:04:08
that job to getting a seat on the
00:04:11
American Stock Exchange so before I did
00:04:14
that I went to work as a computer
00:04:16
programmer on Wall Street where I heard
00:04:19
about options boots and calls I was
00:04:22
intrigued by the question of how to
00:04:24
calculate the correct price for an
00:04:27
option I figured that out and wanted to
00:04:30
go to trade for myself and so I've been
00:04:34
saving
00:04:35
money and over the 10 years of working I
00:04:40
saved up two hundred thousand dollars
00:04:42
which in those days was more A Lot 200
00:04:45
yeah today so I I bought a seat on the
00:04:48
stock exchange and went on to the floor
00:04:51
as a Trader that was very different in
00:04:53
those days because there were no
00:04:55
computers there was you know just people
00:04:57
yelling and shouting and you you at the
00:05:00
time felt like that was not the best way
00:05:03
to do this
00:05:05
the next certainly was not the best
00:05:07
place to do this because by that time I
00:05:10
was yelled by that time computer
00:05:12
technology was at the time just at the
00:05:15
point where you could have computerized
00:05:18
the exchanges this was in 1977 but of
00:05:22
course they didn't but I do this because
00:05:24
the big traders made their money out of
00:05:26
the chaos he didn't want to break the
00:05:28
system that was already there but in
00:05:30
1984 you launched timber Hill which has
00:05:34
now become interactive brokers right the
00:05:38
largest Brokerage in the United States
00:05:40
can you tell me the story of how it
00:05:42
started as this small company TP and Co
00:05:44
timber Hill to now be coming to this
00:05:46
level you're amazing you really did you
00:05:49
remember yes of course I had to
00:05:52
so I spent Five Years on the floor
00:05:54
trying to understand how things work
00:05:58
kept asking them to convert to
00:06:01
computerized systems and they kept
00:06:03
saying no no go away go away that
00:06:06
specialist didn't want to trade with me
00:06:08
because I knew that I knew the number is
00:06:10
better than they did so I hired a very
00:06:15
attractive young women
00:06:17
to trade for me we told them what to
00:06:20
trade I went back to a specialist and
00:06:23
they said I'd like to buy such and such
00:06:25
after all the Specialists rised up and
00:06:28
they said well that's not going to work
00:06:30
by the rules they were right so I didn't
00:06:32
know what to do so so that in 82 and
00:06:36
decided that I would have a computer
00:06:38
that would get all the all the prices so
00:06:42
my computer took in those bids and
00:06:45
offers and analyzed them and printed out
00:06:49
the best trades to do you wrote this
00:06:51
program all yourself I I did the program
00:06:54
yeah which by the way I have in my
00:06:56
office here you have it yeah I can show
00:06:58
it to you
00:07:01
so you build the hardware too
00:07:04
yeah we did in the office right it's a
00:07:06
lot different than the MacBook but it
00:07:09
was decade and a half earlier
00:07:12
so it was touch sensitive and you could
00:07:15
communicate with the computer by how
00:07:17
where you touched it so how do you go
00:07:19
from creating something like this
00:07:21
getting your company off the ground to
00:07:23
taking it to now billions of dollars
00:07:26
well you know this was 40 years ago when
00:07:29
I we ran down with the so 40 years is a
00:07:32
long time you know it didn't come very
00:07:34
fast you know it's just you have to do
00:07:38
it day after day after day week after
00:07:40
week year after year it takes a long
00:07:43
time was there ever a moment that you
00:07:45
wanted to give up or it got really
00:07:46
difficult uh well several times I've
00:07:48
always went bankrupt yes yeah several
00:07:51
Banks so do you remember what that felt
00:07:53
like sure remember it's horrible
00:07:57
on the flip side do you remember the day
00:08:00
that you became a billionaire
00:08:03
no you know I don't
00:08:05
but I remember the times that I always
00:08:08
win bastia so that's just something that
00:08:12
happens and the day goes on as normal
00:08:14
that no the billionaire is not it is the
00:08:18
first million in the first 10 million
00:08:20
that are difficult once once you got
00:08:23
there
00:08:25
goes faster and faster your story is
00:08:28
incredible I think it's the most
00:08:29
incredible of any business person I've
00:08:31
ever met in my life I want to switch it
00:08:33
around and I want to ask for some advice
00:08:35
because all my viewers are young
00:08:37
entrepreneurs or aspiring investors the
00:08:39
first thing I want to talk about is that
00:08:40
you've seen many ups and downs in the
00:08:42
market you've seen some of the worst
00:08:43
crashes in history do you think we're
00:08:46
headed for another market crash
00:08:48
well uh
00:08:50
I mean that'll be they'll be crashes
00:08:54
and there'll be a final crash a final
00:08:56
Crash from this there is no return
00:09:00
there I I believe that because there is
00:09:04
social dissonance and there is we don't
00:09:08
have a financial solid Financial basis
00:09:12
anymore even over the debt and we can
00:09:15
just keep adding to the dead so I think
00:09:17
eventually through the collapse and when
00:09:20
it comes back it will take some years to
00:09:23
come back the companies and the stocks
00:09:27
will not exist when when the system
00:09:31
comes back again so the idea through the
00:09:34
stocks that you end up with will be
00:09:36
birthday it's almost like a reset yeah
00:09:41
so how can we prepare for that how can
00:09:42
somebody like me prepare for that
00:09:47
but my mother told me always the only
00:09:50
thing they can never take away from you
00:09:52
is what you have learned what do you
00:09:54
think is the most important lesson
00:09:56
you've learned if you are sitting with
00:09:58
Thomas at 18 years old and he was
00:10:00
looking you in the face what is one word
00:10:03
of advice you would preach to him
00:10:06
be ambitious
00:10:08
try to succeed at all cost
00:10:12
the last question I want to ask you is
00:10:15
that you've achieved what most people
00:10:17
would consider the dream life you have
00:10:20
everything you've made billions of
00:10:22
dollars you have houses around the world
00:10:23
you have a family
00:10:25
what's left is there anything that you
00:10:27
feel like is missing in your life
00:10:31
no sure I still want to succeed better
00:10:33
than I am and so far I like interactive
00:10:37
brokers to become bigger and more
00:10:40
successful and I think that's the reason
00:10:42
why you're here today is because you
00:10:44
care about building the best product the
00:10:46
best team and helping your investors so
00:10:49
that's correct I really appreciate this
00:10:51
interview it means a lot to me please
00:10:53
subscribe to Jordan's channel it's
00:10:56

00:11:04

00:11:09
subscribe yet I don't know what you're
00:11:10
doing me talking money on me
