00:00:00
today is all about color join me behind
00:00:03
the scenes of a vibrant fashion shoot
00:00:05
plus we're going to talk about color
00:00:06
management and calibration with a
00:00:08
calibrate display Pro
00:00:10
[Music]
00:00:22
HL hey everybody Lindsay Adler here and
00:00:25
color is my thing I use super saturated
00:00:28
color throughout my work as an essential
00:00:29
part of My Style I want to excite people
00:00:31
with my images I want to hold their
00:00:33
attention and color is one of those
00:00:35
really important ways that I keep a
00:00:37
viewer engaged so whether it is a
00:00:40
creative fashion editorial a portrait a
00:00:42
commercial campaign you name it I am
00:00:45
very purposeful about color and so today
00:00:48
you're going to get a peek at my thought
00:00:49
process and workflow you're going to get
00:00:51
to take a look at the behind the scenes
00:00:53
of a vibrant fashion shoe now when I'm
00:00:55
using Color I think about it at every
00:00:57
part of the process from my choices and
00:00:59
clothes in background to considerations
00:01:01
for color theory and color harmonies my
00:01:03
camera settings my monitor calibration
00:01:06
my color grading all of my
00:01:07
post-processing this video is sponsored
00:01:09
by calite now the reason that they're
00:01:11
partnering with me for this behind
00:01:12
the-scenes video is that we believe that
00:01:14
color management and color management
00:01:16
tools are essential for photographers so
00:01:18
now we're on set for the vibrant fashion
00:01:20
shoot but a lot has happened before
00:01:22
we've gotten to this stage we had to
00:01:24
plan the hair the makeup the Wardrobe
00:01:26
and so I actually began for the shoot
00:01:28
with the inspiration of the dress my
00:01:30
wardrobe stylist showed me this
00:01:31
beautiful purple dress and then I had to
00:01:33
figure out well how do I want to capture
00:01:36
it how do I want to build a shoe around
00:01:38
this and because color is so important
00:01:41
to my style I often begin with the
00:01:43
question of what color Harmony do I want
00:01:46
to use and so if you are brand new to
00:01:48
color harmonies I recommend you check
00:01:50
out a tool at color. adobe.com so let's
00:01:53
take a look this is an interactive color
00:01:55
wheel and what you can do is you can
00:01:56
select a single color and then you can
00:01:58
prompt it to show you different color
00:02:00
harmonies in other words other colors
00:02:02
that play well with the color you've
00:02:03
selected so for example I could pick uh
00:02:08
let's say a complimentary color and it's
00:02:11
showing me that opposite the purple that
00:02:13
I've chosen here is a little bit of like
00:02:15
a a yellow green that would be the
00:02:17
compliment or if I wanted to play around
00:02:20
with triatic triatic colors are equally
00:02:23
spaced around the color wheel and so if
00:02:25
purple is my base I've got a teal green
00:02:28
and then a little bit of this Orange for
00:02:30
a triadic color scheme so what I decided
00:02:32
to do is actually a color scheme called
00:02:36
split compliment so what that means is
00:02:38
you're taking some colors next to each
00:02:39
other on the color wheel and then also
00:02:42
using their compliment so this is
00:02:43
actually a combination of two color
00:02:45
harmonies kind of uh the first one is
00:02:47
called an analogous color scheme this is
00:02:49
where the colors exist next to each
00:02:51
other on the color wheel so this would
00:02:52
be pinks and blues and purples the
00:02:55
analogous color scheme is a very calming
00:02:57
very soothing color scheme but I wanted
00:02:59
something that was vibrant that would
00:03:01
really pop create a lot of contrast and
00:03:03
so to create this contrast I selected
00:03:05
the color opposite on the color wheel in
00:03:07
this case it's kind of a yellow orange
00:03:09
and that is something called a split
00:03:11
compliment so that's what we're going to
00:03:13
go with today so if you were ever trying
00:03:15
to figure out okay I've got a blue or a
00:03:17
purple or you name the color and I don't
00:03:19
know what other colors would work well
00:03:20
with it start with your color wheel
00:03:22
that's going to give you a lot of
00:03:23
inspiration my intention for this shoot
00:03:26
is to use really saturated colors and I
00:03:28
want to make sure that they're
00:03:29
accurately represented on my monitors
00:03:31
I'm actually using two different
00:03:32
monitors here I've got a MacBook Pro and
00:03:34
I've got a Ben Q so I began by creating
00:03:38
custom profiles by calibrating both of
00:03:40
them using the calibrate display Pro HL
00:03:44
even though the monitors are quite
00:03:45
different you'll notice that they match
00:03:47
the contrast and colors match which
00:03:49
means as I'm adjusting as I'm shooting
00:03:51
I'm looking at Accurate color which is
00:03:53
really important if you see in my style
00:03:55
and the way that I shoot because color
00:03:57
is so important to me now when I shoot
00:03:59
things often evolve but a good place to
00:04:02
start is by taking a picture of a color
00:04:05
cheer now this is not only going to
00:04:07
allow me to get accurate white balance
00:04:08
which is going to give me you know
00:04:10
correct skin tones but I can also use
00:04:12
the white and black points to make sure
00:04:14
that I'm maintaining detail and both in
00:04:16
other words I don't want blown out
00:04:18
highlights or Shadows with no detail
00:04:20
because it's going to be difficult or
00:04:21
near impossible to recover them so this
00:04:23
will give me a good starting point for
00:04:25
my exposure and then correct white
00:04:26
balance so will you do me a favor will
00:04:28
you hold this right up next to your your
00:04:29
face you just want to make sure that it
00:04:31
is in the main
00:04:33
light Sure Fire beautiful all right so
00:04:36
there's just a couple things I'm looking
00:04:38
for first of all I can use my white
00:04:40
balance eye dropper on the medium gray
00:04:43
in order to get the correct white
00:04:44
balance you'll see that the skin tone
00:04:46
got a little bit warmer and more
00:04:47
pleasing and then secondly I just want
00:04:49
to Mouse over and see that I still have
00:04:52
information in the whites and I also
00:04:54
have detail in the blacks so it just
00:04:56
means my exposure is looking good I've
00:04:58
got a great place to start
00:05:00
but I know that I'm likely going to play
00:05:02
around with some funky color so all of
00:05:04
this is going to change so let's talk a
00:05:06
little bit about my light what I'm going
00:05:07
to do here is I'm going to build in each
00:05:10
light one by one and this is where
00:05:11
you're going to see that split
00:05:13
compliment come to life I'm going to
00:05:15
begin with my neutral light which is
00:05:16
what you've seen on my subject already
00:05:18
over here to the right hand side of the
00:05:20
frame I have a magnum reflector with a
00:05:22
grid this is going to give me beautiful
00:05:25
hard crisp light on her face it's going
00:05:26
to be our white neutral light and she
00:05:28
has a amazing cheekbones so I chose this
00:05:31
light because it really carves out her
00:05:33
features so let's take a look at what
00:05:35
light number one is giving us in the
00:05:37
equation so we're starting off with the
00:05:39
Bas we have the purple dress the purple
00:05:40
background and this would be a
00:05:42
monochromatic color scheme for example I
00:05:44
could light the background and it would
00:05:45
be all one Hue and I could lean into
00:05:47
that that could be my color Harmony but
00:05:49
I want something that plays around with
00:05:51
a lot more colors which is why we've
00:05:53
chosen our split compliment so I need to
00:05:55
start adding additional Hues to the
00:05:56
scene which is why we're going to add
00:05:58
our second light so second light is to
00:06:00
the back leftand corner we're using a
00:06:02
strip soft box with a grid in this light
00:06:05
I've added a pink a magenta gel so let's
00:06:08
see what that adds to the
00:06:10
shot so far with this color theory we
00:06:13
would be playing around with something
00:06:15
called an analogous color scheme meaning
00:06:17
colors next to each other on the color
00:06:18
wheel we've expanded just a little bit
00:06:20
we've got the purples in the dress the
00:06:22
pink and the lips we have the uh Pink in
00:06:24
the rim light the blue in the eyes and
00:06:26
so it's giving us a little bit more to
00:06:28
play with but you can see how the colors
00:06:30
really beautifully work together we're
00:06:32
using colors next to each other on the
00:06:33
color wheel and now we're going to add
00:06:35
our contrasting pop of color which is
00:06:37
that hairl light from above it's another
00:06:40
strip soft box with a grid but this time
00:06:42
I have on a yellow maybe a little bit of
00:06:44
a yellow orange gel this is going to do
00:06:47
a few things it's going to light her
00:06:48
hair from above it's going to light her
00:06:50
shoulders but you'll notice that there's
00:06:52
also a little bit of light spilling on
00:06:53
the background this is an accident on
00:06:56
purpose uh right now some of the light
00:06:58
is spilling it's also popping out the
00:07:00
top of the light and so it creates a
00:07:02
little bit of of like lines and texture
00:07:05
to the background but I think it makes
00:07:07
it look more interesting so let's take a
00:07:08
look at that next
00:07:10
light so far so good but I think that
00:07:13
the color in the background is probably
00:07:14
looking a little less saturated than I
00:07:16
intended now in a moment I'm going to
00:07:18
move over and start playing around with
00:07:21
color grading which is where I adjust
00:07:22
the Hue the saturation the contrast of
00:07:24
the image and I always do this when I'm
00:07:27
shooting tether because I want to see
00:07:28
what's possible out of that file and of
00:07:30
course I want to make sure I'm judging
00:07:31
it from a calibrated monitor now before
00:07:34
we start playing around with color
00:07:35
grading I want to make sure I have all
00:07:36
of my lights in place so there's one
00:07:38
more that I want to add to the equation
00:07:40
for Creative effect now all of the
00:07:42
strobes I've been using here are in fact
00:07:44
strobes right they're just pulses of
00:07:45
light they freeze the subject in place
00:07:48
but I want to switch that up and I'm
00:07:50
going to add a continuous light I'm
00:07:52
adding a nanlite Pavo tube this is an
00:07:54
RGB tube and I am going to make it blue
00:07:58
this is another color that is next to
00:08:00
each other on the color wheel so I have
00:08:01
the pinks the purples the blues but
00:08:04
because it is continuous light it is
00:08:06
going to allow us to have a creative
00:08:08
effect all right so let's turn on that
00:08:11
light what I want you to notice here is
00:08:13
that if you look at the difference
00:08:14
between those two images you'll actually
00:08:16
notice very minimal difference right you
00:08:21
don't really see much blue maybe just a
00:08:22
little bit in the Shimmer of the dress
00:08:24
and that is because right now the way
00:08:26
that I have my camera exposed it's not
00:08:29
allowing continuous light to register so
00:08:31
in order to see that blue I need to do
00:08:33
something called dragging the shutter
00:08:35
and so you can check out I have many
00:08:37
other videos that talk about this
00:08:38
technique but what I'm going to do is
00:08:39
instead of shooting at 1/200th of a
00:08:41
second for my shutter speed I'm going to
00:08:43
slow down to a tenth of a second the
00:08:46
tenth of the second is going to allow
00:08:48
the blue to register in the shadows show
00:08:49
up on the dress it's also going to allow
00:08:51
me to introduce purposeful motion blur I
00:08:55
can move my camera I can zoom my lens
00:08:56
and when I do so you're going to see
00:08:58
this beautiful St streak in the image
00:09:00
which gives a sense of energy to the
00:09:01
shot so first I'll take an image where I
00:09:03
don't wiggle my camera I'll perhaps
00:09:06
leave my uh stabilization on and then
00:09:09
the second image I'm going to turn it
00:09:11
off and move
00:09:12
around okay let's see first
00:09:16
one so something that you should notice
00:09:19
is that the image looks horribly
00:09:21
Overexposed it looks totally Incorrect
00:09:24
and that's because when I dragged my
00:09:25
shutter I let in all of the ambient
00:09:27
light including for example the very
00:09:29
bright modeling light on the face or the
00:09:31
light that's Illuminating me around the
00:09:33
space so in order for this to actually
00:09:36
expose correctly I need to start turning
00:09:38
off my modeling lights so I'm going to
00:09:39
do that
00:09:44
here okay I have all of my lights in
00:09:47
place so now is the part of the equation
00:09:50
where I want to come over and I want to
00:09:52
make sure that I'm getting the color and
00:09:54
the information out of the file I want
00:09:55
with a little bit of color grading right
00:09:57
let's take a look at what we've
00:09:58
accomplished so far
00:09:59
uh so first of all when we turned off
00:10:02
the ambient light but still dragged the
00:10:04
shutter you can see that the beautiful
00:10:05
blue shows up in the Shadows on her face
00:10:07
and then when I actually move the camera
00:10:12
you see that I'm getting this beautiful
00:10:13
blur ghosting effect reflected off of
00:10:15
the dress sometimes even off of her face
00:10:17
this is an effect caused by the shutter
00:10:19
drag and that's one of the reasons I was
00:10:21
inspired by this dress to play around
00:10:23
with that effect the colors are not
00:10:25
nearly as saturated as I intended so
00:10:28
what I want to do is I want to play
00:10:29
around a little bit with color grading
00:10:30
so first and foremost let me come over
00:10:32
here and pop up my contrast now this is
00:10:34
meant to be fantasy so I don't really
00:10:36
need to have the colors accurate but
00:10:38
instead I'm going to judge off of my
00:10:40
calibrated monitors and I'm going to see
00:10:43
how saturated I can get them before they
00:10:45
start to break apart before I start to
00:10:46
see you know unpleasing banding for
00:10:49
example so that looks good so far um I
00:10:54
think that I want to play around a
00:10:55
little bit with contrast it's looking a
00:10:57
little bit flat but I notice that when I
00:10:59
play around with contrast some of the
00:11:01
highlights start to get Overexposed so
00:11:03
I'm going to darken down the exposure a
00:11:05
little bit which of course I could come
00:11:07
back and do this in camera as well uh
00:11:10
and then maybe bring in some highlights
00:11:12
so so far here is what I'm doing before
00:11:17
and after and I think the picture is
00:11:18
starting to look much more successful
00:11:21
I'm shooting tethered and editing into a
00:11:22
program called capture one and I really
00:11:24
like the look here but I want to make
00:11:26
sure all of my photographs now have that
00:11:28
adjustment applied so what I'm going to
00:11:29
do is come over here into the top right
00:11:31
hand corner and I'm going to copy and
00:11:33
then apply those adjustments down
00:11:35
everything is now going to have that
00:11:36
effect so there are only two more things
00:11:38
I want to add into the equation here I
00:11:42
would like to add a little bit more
00:11:43
atmosphere and I'm going to do it in two
00:11:45
ways first of all I'm going to add a
00:11:46
filter this is something called a black
00:11:48
Pro Mist what it does is it takes
00:11:50
highlights and it makes them glow and so
00:11:52
in this instance if I have the corner of
00:11:53
the lights in the frame where the light
00:11:55
up top just peeking in it's going to
00:11:57
make it Bloom just has a very atmosphere
00:11:59
feric effect and then going to actually
00:12:02
add a little atmosphere if you will help
00:12:04
me and I'm going to use atmosphere
00:12:07
aerosol so aerosol in a can we're going
00:12:09
to spray that into the environment and
00:12:11
it's going to catch some of the
00:12:13
backlight
00:12:15
oops
00:12:20
good good if you take a look to the top
00:12:22
right hand side of the frame you can see
00:12:24
that the strip softbox above is just
00:12:26
glowing a little bit it's hazing out and
00:12:28
there's also a little bit more texture
00:12:30
to the image but if I reset these
00:12:34
adjustments look how flat the image
00:12:36
looks look how boring it looks so that's
00:12:39
why I always Shoot Tethered I always
00:12:41
color grade to make sure I'm controlling
00:12:43
the color throughout I always consider
00:12:45
color theory and I'm always judging my
00:12:47
images from calibrated monitors so now
00:12:50
that I'm all set up for Success it's
00:12:52
time to get the shoe and so this is the
