about it is the long haft and for me00:01:06
that means that this was used from00:01:07
horseback now I'm in an ideal position00:01:10
I'm gonna go and get on a horse and00:01:11
actually use this and see how it goes00:01:14
but a couple of things about battle axes00:01:17
that you may or may not know about00:01:19
battle axes are quite different from00:01:22
axes used to chop wood I mean they're00:01:24
similar shape perhaps they have some00:01:27
differences and one of the key things is00:01:29
the thickness of the blade now the very00:01:32
first battle axes were Dane axes and00:01:34
great axes of that sort actually have an00:01:37
incredibly thin almost knife like main00:01:40
blade and that means all the weight is00:01:42
in the end but it means that it would be00:01:44
really quite bad to chop wood you you00:01:48
really wouldn't want to use wear it00:01:50
against wood in later periods they00:01:53
actually come back and they come back in00:01:55
a slightly different form they come back00:01:57
a little bit thicker and this is perhaps00:02:00
because they're being used against00:02:02
people who are in more armor basically00:02:06
it's much harder to do any kind of00:02:09
damage against somebody who's covered in00:02:11
plate or male or heavy padding than it00:02:14
is to get somebody who just doesn't have00:02:15
any armor at all and the very earliest00:02:19
axes the Dane axes have a different00:02:21
shape often they're a bit bigger than00:02:23
this not much bigger and certainly not00:02:25
very heavy either but they often don't00:02:27
have this rear spike this rear spike00:02:30
comes in around the 14th late 13th early00:02:34

key thing about spikes like this in my00:02:39

that they are ideal for getting through00:02:42
mail and plate armor a spike in itself00:02:46
if it hits somebody who's unarmored it00:02:47
can go in deep and do quite a lot of00:02:49
damage it's not very killing in fact00:02:52
with enough adrenaline you can get a00:02:54
spike or nail or something like that00:02:56
into a non-essential part of your body00:02:58

so you need a blade to do enough damage00:03:02
to actually take somebody down but00:03:05
against armor any kind of armor of00:03:08

is partly a transitional weapon this00:03:39
could be used against unarmored people00:03:41
or against people in armor it with equal00:03:45

catches on something you can be pulled00:05:48
off your horse completely you can be00:05:49
pulled out of the saddle as the axe is00:05:52
embedded in a target that is moving in00:05:54
the wrong direction so it's potentially00:05:56
quite dangerous especially if it's00:05:58
tightened on your wrist so there is a00:06:00
way of using a lanyard in your hand00:06:03
which is used today in polo you have a00:06:07
lanyard on the end of the polo mallet00:06:09
and this is how you use a lanyard in00:06:11
polo because in polo you have exactly00:06:14
the same problem your mallet can get00:06:16
caught on the v not the enemy but the00:06:19
opponent in play can get hooked up on a00:06:22
part of her horse or it can get hooked00:06:24
up on parts of another player and what00:06:27
what is done is you put your thumb00:06:29
through the lanyard and it goes around00:06:31
the back of your hand and then you hold00:06:35

it's quite a technical weapon you sort00:14:20
of think of an axe as a bit of a brutish00:14:23
weapon which is used by thugs and you00:14:26

than a sword well in my brief experience00:14:32
with it it's exactly the opposite I00:14:34
actually think that acts like this takes00:14:38
considerable amount of skill to use00:14:40
properly and of course if you get the00:14:42
edge alignment wrong it doesn't do00:14:44
anything it becomes quite a weak Club00:14:46

calculate where the blow is going to go00:14:51
because you've actually got a very00:14:52
narrow piece of blade or point to00:14:55
actually strike the target so it's quite00:14:57
easy to miss potentially whereas with00:15:00
the sword if you miss the the percussion00:15:02
point the sweet point of the of the00:15:04
sword you're still going to hit00:15:05
something because it's a long bar of00:15:07
metal but with this it's a very short00:15:09
bar of metal so I think we ought to00:15:12
consider axes especially when used from00:15:15
horseback to actually be expert weapons00:15:18
I think spear Lance and a sword are00:15:21
actually all marginally easier to use00:15:24
well than a battle axe that's quite an00:15:27
interesting observation I think perhaps00:15:29
definitely not a brutish primitive00:15:32
