00:00:09
years ago I got a call that changed my
00:00:11
life it was from a fiance who was back
00:00:14
home visiting family for the weekend and
00:00:15
she said something that absolutely
00:00:17
sideswiped me and she said this isn't
00:00:20
working for me I don't want to do this
00:00:21
anymore
00:00:23
and the next thing I know a week later
00:00:24
and I'm living in the back of a 15
00:00:26
passenger van that I bought from an old
00:00:27
church because I'm 80 000 in debt I have
00:00:30
no money in the bank and I can't afford
00:00:32
to live anywhere else so I parked that
00:00:34
van in the back of a Climbing gym and I
00:00:37
run a power cord into the building and
00:00:39
that was my home for the next four
00:00:40
months as I tried to figure out where
00:00:42
everything had gone so wrong
00:00:44
that was easily the lowest I've ever
00:00:47
felt I was embarrassed ashamed and
00:00:49
truthfully afraid
00:00:51
afraid because I knew I was capable of
00:00:54
more and that if I kept on the same path
00:00:56
I was going to end up a sad bitter and
00:00:59
regretful old man now Maslow is a
00:01:03
psychologist who's probably best known
00:01:04
for his hierarchy of needs which simply
00:01:06
says humans are motivated by five basic
00:01:08
categories of needs we have our
00:01:10
physiological needs our safety our love
00:01:12
our self-esteem and our
00:01:14
self-actualization and you're probably
00:01:16
familiar with this Theory but Maslow
00:01:18
said something else that you may not
00:01:20
have heard before I hadn't but when I
00:01:23
did it really changed how I viewed
00:01:24
myself in the decisions I was making in
00:01:26
my life he said this that which we can
00:01:30
be we must be it's a simple sentence but
00:01:33
what does it really mean
00:01:35
well to me at that moment in my life
00:01:38
living in the back of the van it meant
00:01:40
that we all feel we have the potential
00:01:42
for greatness after all nobody thinks
00:01:45
they're average you're probably an above
00:01:48
average driver right and uh an above
00:01:50
average lover and above average
00:01:51
intelligence
00:01:53
now obviously this can't all be true we
00:01:55
can't all be above average and yet I do
00:01:58
believe that each of us possesses the
00:02:00
potential for greatness
00:02:02
for me in the back of that van I didn't
00:02:04
feel great but I believed perhaps even
00:02:07
delusionally that I had the potential
00:02:09
for greatness
00:02:11
and so from That Rock Bottom place where
00:02:13
I had literally nothing else to lose I
00:02:15
went on a search a quest
00:02:17
to find my greatness
00:02:20
in this video I'm going to share exactly
00:02:22
how I tapped into it I got out of that
00:02:24
van and ultimately how I went from being
00:02:26
eighty thousand dollars in debt to a
00:02:28
millionaire in only three years
00:02:29
[Music]
00:02:32
so number one I treated personal
00:02:34
development as though it was my most
00:02:36
important job
00:02:38
now for the past couple years leading up
00:02:39
to that point I'd been a professional
00:02:41
rock climber which sounds really cool
00:02:43
but just means I made barely any money
00:02:45
and spent all my time sleeping in the
00:02:47
dirt and climbing on rocks in the World
00:02:50
of Sports it's easy to see that your
00:02:53
body is your product if you don't take
00:02:55
care of it it's not going to perform how
00:02:57
you want it to
00:02:58
and so maximizing my performance
00:03:00
depended on how I treated my body how
00:03:03
seriously I took my rest in recovery and
00:03:05
nutrition and all the little things that
00:03:07
eventually add up to become really big
00:03:08
things
00:03:09
and so step one in turning my life
00:03:11
around was to take that same level of
00:03:14
obsession and apply it to all parts of
00:03:16
my life
00:03:18
okay full disclosure it really wasn't
00:03:20
all parts of my life I'm pretty lazy so
00:03:22
I don't like working any harder than is
00:03:25
strictly necessary so I asked myself
00:03:26
what are the minimum number of levers I
00:03:28
have to pull to get the maximum effect
00:03:30
because I didn't want to be busy I
00:03:32
wanted to be effective and so I looked
00:03:35
for similarities in all the feedback I
00:03:36
was getting from mentors and the
00:03:38
research I was collecting and you know
00:03:40
what I found that there were really only
00:03:42
four levers I needed to pull and I
00:03:45
called them my four spheres of influence
00:03:46
those fears were mindset health wealth
00:03:50
and skills
00:03:52
so let's break them down first it all
00:03:54
starts with mindset your mindset is the
00:03:57
lens through which you see the world if
00:03:58
that lens is broken or scuzzy then it's
00:04:01
going to affect how you see and
00:04:03
ultimately move through the world so the
00:04:06
clearer your mindset the more clearly
00:04:07
you'll triangulate your targets avoid
00:04:10
obstacles and move directly towards your
00:04:12
goals
00:04:13
now one book in particular was
00:04:15
transformative for me it was meditations
00:04:17
by Marcus Aurelius
00:04:19
this book was the personal Journal of
00:04:22
the emperor of the known world as he
00:04:24
wrestled with all the same questions we
00:04:27
still wrestle with hundreds of years
00:04:29
later
00:04:30
what's the meaning of life what's it
00:04:32
mean to live a good life who am I why do
00:04:34
I matter this book gave me a framework
00:04:37
for moving through the world in a
00:04:38
perspective that oriented me towards the
00:04:41
aspects of life that truly matter namely
00:04:43
the process and not the results
00:04:47
see one of the recurring themes of the
00:04:49
stoics is that life's short and we're
00:04:51
all gonna die and because of that every
00:04:53
moment is precious and so you've got to
00:04:55
make the most of it but also you've got
00:04:57
to realize that none of this matters and
00:05:00
so don't take any of it too seriously
00:05:01
the more Poise you can bring to your
00:05:04
life the less you ride the highs and the
00:05:06
lows ultimately the less you'll suffer
00:05:08
now I'm not a fan of suffering so this
00:05:11
seemed like a pretty good deal to me so
00:05:13
I focused on that getting caught up in
00:05:15
life's roller coaster which freed me to
00:05:17
really focus in on performing in the
00:05:19
moment because in the end this moment
00:05:22
and what you do with it is all that
00:05:24
matters the second sphere of influence
00:05:26
was health and because of my background
00:05:28
as a rock climber I had this sphere
00:05:30
unlock but for most people this is the
00:05:32
easiest place to start and the one
00:05:34
that'll pay the biggest dividends Seneca
00:05:36
said another stoic philosopher the
00:05:38
healthy man wants a thousand things the
00:05:40
sick man wants but one
00:05:42
if you don't have your wealth then what
00:05:44
do you really have regardless of where
00:05:46
you are on your health Journey here are
00:05:48
the three areas to focus on to get the
00:05:50
maximum effect exercise nutrition sleep
00:05:53
it's pretty straightforward get up and
00:05:56
move your body for at least 30 minutes a
00:05:57
day pay attention to what you're putting
00:05:59
into your body because a software
00:06:01
engineer say if you put in junk you'll
00:06:03
get junk out and get plenty of sleep
00:06:05
seriously you spend a quarter of your
00:06:07
life sleeping so it's well worth
00:06:08
figuring out how to get this part dialed
00:06:10
in now the third sphere of influence was
00:06:13
by far my weakest wealth
00:06:15
if you're like me you didn't grow up in
00:06:18
a family that talked about finances and
00:06:19
it wasn't something they taught in
00:06:20
school before we returned to Maslow's
00:06:23
hierarchy of needs we realized that
00:06:24
before we can worry about
00:06:26
self-actualization we have to worry
00:06:28
about solving for our physical and
00:06:30
shelter needs and so for me at that
00:06:33
point in my life I recognized solving
00:06:35
for this sphere would have the biggest
00:06:36
influence as they say money doesn't
00:06:38
solve all your problems but it does
00:06:39
solve all your money problems and I had
00:06:41
a lot of money problems
00:06:43
so I set out to learn the rules of the
00:06:45
money game because that's exactly what
00:06:46
it is it's a game and anybody can win if
00:06:50
they know how to play
00:06:52
now the fourth sphere of influence were
00:06:55
my skills the skills are probably the
00:06:57
most valuable investment you can make
00:06:59
because once acquired they continue
00:07:01
paying dividends for the rest of your
00:07:03
life
00:07:04
the trick then is to figure out what are
00:07:06
the most beneficial skills to acquire
00:07:08
now Elon Musk says you're paid in
00:07:10
proportion to the magnitude of the
00:07:12
problems that you solve and as I
00:07:14
inventored my skills I realized I had a
00:07:16
great Baseline of skills in a lot of
00:07:18
areas but none were particularly
00:07:20
valuable
00:07:21
so I started asking around talking to
00:07:23
pretty much every successful person I
00:07:25
could find and I tried to figure out
00:07:27
what were the most valuable skills I
00:07:29
needed to develop
00:07:30
here are just two of those skills I
00:07:32
realized I needed to work on personally
00:07:34
first the skill of discipline or rather
00:07:36
the ability to hold myself accountable
00:07:38
and actually do the things I said I
00:07:40
would number two was communication your
00:07:43
ability to communicate with the world
00:07:45
whether it's through the spoken word on
00:07:46
a YouTube video or in a one-on-one
00:07:48
conversation with a friend through body
00:07:50
language or through the written word
00:07:52
we're constantly communicating with the
00:07:54
world but often not very well I quickly
00:07:58
came to realize that if you want to have
00:07:59
Maximum Impact or influence on the world
00:08:01
you have to be able to communicate
00:08:04
effectively now we're going to do
00:08:05
another video diving to all the most
00:08:07
high value skills that I think you need
00:08:09
to hone to become a millionaire things
00:08:10
like marketing branding product design
00:08:12
psychology Finance investing business
00:08:14
all of it for now just start by
00:08:17
assessing your current skills create a
00:08:20
list of all your skills the things that
00:08:22
you are the best at in the world and
00:08:24
then create another list imagining all
00:08:26
the skills your future millionaire self
00:08:28
possesses what skills does that person
00:08:30
have
00:08:31
and I'll write them out
00:08:33
you have a map for getting from where
00:08:35
you are right now to where you want to
00:08:37
be and all you have to do is focus every
00:08:39
single day on becoming marginally better
00:08:41
at one of those skills and in three five
00:08:43
ten years you're going to be
00:08:45
unrecognizably better this is what it
00:08:47
means to focus on the process on the
00:08:49
things within your control and not the
00:08:52
result now before we move on to the
00:08:53
second thing that I did to get from 80
00:08:55
000 in debt to a millionaire let's
00:08:57
quickly talk about coaching a great
00:08:59
coach can help you compress Decades of
00:09:01
learning into days I'm a big fan of
00:09:03
coaching but in the beginning if you
00:09:05
don't have a bunch of money to spend
00:09:06
focus on the free resources like YouTube
00:09:08
and Google when you're finally ready to
00:09:10
hire a coach check out this video on
00:09:12
lessons I've personally learned spending
00:09:14
hundreds of thousands of dollars on
00:09:16
coaching in the last couple years because trust me you're not going to
00:09:18
want to make some of these mistakes so
00:09:20
here's the second thing I did to become
00:09:22
a millionaire in three years is I parked
00:09:25
my ego at the door
00:09:26
and I cut expenses ruthlessly in the
00:09:30
beginning I had very little income I
00:09:32
worked around the clock on acquiring
00:09:33
skills that would make me more valuable
00:09:34
to the world but that doesn't happen
00:09:36
overnight in the meantime the only thing
00:09:39
I could really control were my expenses
00:09:41
so I lived in that van for four months
00:09:44
and then I moved in with my best
00:09:46
friend's mom which for the record is
00:09:47
really no different than living with
00:09:48
your own mom not a good look for a 30
00:09:51
year old man a lot of people gave me
00:09:52
crap for my living Arrangement but I
00:09:54
didn't care because I knew it was the
00:09:55
price I had to pay to buy the life I so
00:09:58
desperately wanted and as they say you
00:10:00
can have anything in life but you can't
00:10:02
have everything so figure out what it is
00:10:04
you want what's it cost and then pay
00:10:07
that price and don't look back just park
00:10:10
the ego at the door and keep moving
00:10:12
forward now the third thing I did to
00:10:14
transform my life is where the rubber
00:10:16
really meets the road I started seeing
00:10:18
actual progress I built a business why
00:10:21
and because every person I looked up to
00:10:24
Charlie Munger Felix Dennis Elon Musk
00:10:26
they all said to get wealthy you have to
00:10:28
find a way to stop trading your time for
00:10:30
money and the best way to do that is by
00:10:32
owning a business a quick side note
00:10:35
growing up I was never very
00:10:36
entrepreneurial I never had a lemonade
00:10:38
stand I never pluck flowers from the
00:10:40
neighbor and sold it back to them in all
00:10:41
my research I kept hearing how important
00:10:44
it was to disconnect the inputs of my
00:10:47
time in exchange for the output of money
00:10:49
so I grabbed a couple hundred dollars
00:10:51
worth of cleaning supplies and I started
00:10:53
washing windows and then I hired a guy
00:10:55
to wash the windows for me while I
00:10:57
handled the marketing and the cold
00:10:58
calling and then I hired a guy to do
00:11:01
that for me and pretty soon I had a nice
00:11:03
little cash generating business and I
00:11:05
had this epiphany
00:11:06
I love business it was liberating and
00:11:10
challenging but most of all it gave me a
00:11:11
sense of purpose and also the means for
00:11:14
changing the trajectory of my life
00:11:17
but making a bunch of money wasn't
00:11:19
enough in and of itself to get me to
00:11:21
where I wanted to be which was a place
00:11:23
of complete Financial Freedom and see
00:11:26
this is where most people go off the
00:11:27
track they start making good money but
00:11:30
just as quickly as it comes in the door
00:11:32
it goes back out it's called lifestyle
00:11:34
creep suddenly you can afford that new
00:11:37
car that new apartment that knew
00:11:38
everything and so you go buy it
00:11:41
don't fall into this trap to truly build
00:11:44
wealth you have to move on to the fourth
00:11:47
and final step which got me from 80 000
00:11:49
in debt to a million in three years
00:11:52
you have to invest everything you
00:11:55
possibly can now there are all sorts of
00:11:57
fantastic investment vehicles but
00:11:59
honestly investing can feel pretty
00:12:01
overwhelming for most people and
00:12:02
something that most of us didn't learn
00:12:04
growing up and because it's so important
00:12:06
we're afraid we'll make a mistake and so
00:12:08
we Outsource it to a financial advisor
00:12:11
or a stock broker but this is wrong if
00:12:14
you want to win the money game you have
00:12:16
to know the rules you can't rely on
00:12:18
somebody else just telling you what to
00:12:20
do so I dove in I researched everything
00:12:23
under the sun stocks bonds crypto and
00:12:25
yes real estate for me I started
00:12:28
investing with multi-family real estate
00:12:30
a triplex in particular which I bought
00:12:32
for 246 500 and now here a decade later
00:12:36
my portfolio has grown to around 70
00:12:38
million but it didn't just jump there
00:12:41
overnight it was a small process of
00:12:44
consistently reinvesting everything I
00:12:46
was making in my businesses started
00:12:48
small you know by treating personal
00:12:50
development as my number one job by
00:12:52
parking my ego at the door building
00:12:54
those businesses making it my my
00:12:56
everything and then reinvesting every
00:12:58
penny back into investment opportunities
00:13:01
into assets and getting the benefits of
00:13:04
compounding interest
00:13:05
and that's it that's seriously just how
00:13:08
I got from being eighty thousand dollars
00:13:09
in debt to three years later being a
00:13:12
millionaire
00:13:13
it is that simple it's not that easy but
00:13:17
if I can do it and so can you
00:13:19
[Music]
