Today I show you how your should calibrate & gain stage your preamp to reference -18dbfs using the Focusrite ISA one as an example. So much can be said of what I show and much can be debated. However, what is can't be disputed is that the meters on all preamps are there to guide you into not only setting levels but benchmarking your entire system. By aligning your preamps to reference -18dbfs on your DAW you insure a great starting point for setting the proper levels for any instrument or vocal to be recorded. Now, there are margins to work within while doing setting levels. However, having an optimized benchmark, as created by sending a calibration tone to your DAW's input, takes all of the guesswork out of the equation. The importance of taking care of the signal to be recorded to your DAW cannot be overstated.
