Это Исповедание Веры подготовил Св. Григор Татеваци (1346 - 1409 г.) в опровержение клеветы на Армянскую Апостольскую Церковь, будто бы армяне придерживаются ереси монофизитской, то есть являются последователями учения Евтихия (утверждавшего,что человеческая природа во Христе была поглощена Божественной). Именно это заблуждение и приписывают Армянской Церкви. Храня исповедание первых трех Вселенских Соборов и учение Св. Кирилла, Армянская Церковь остерегалась опасностей, идущих от халкидонской формулировки, ибо в ней видела скрытое несторианство. Христология Восточных отцов очень проста, она не имеет в себе склонности к тому, чтобы таинство веры делать для ума удобопонятным. Христос есть совершенный Бог и совершенный человек. Божество и человечество соединены в единую природу неизменяемым, неслитным и нераздельным образом. Это соединение есть существенное и естественное соединение, в одно и то же время несказуемое и недосягаемое для ума. Восточное богословие отвергает во Христе всякого рода разделение и двойственность. Един Христос — Воплощенное Слово, единая Богочеловеческая природа, единая ипостась, единое лицо, единая воля, единое действие. Разделенные природы, но соединенные ипостасью и лицом, со стороны Восточных отцов рассматриваются как унижение несказуемого таинства Богочеловека, а также как попытка превратить созерцательное исповедание веры в механизм, воспринимаемый умом.
