00:00:19
welcome to the kitchen uh this is my
00:00:22
fridge this is the medic uh it's a dual
00:00:26
zone fridge freezer combo I usually keep
00:00:28
all of my refrigerated Goods here and my
00:00:32
freezer Goods here I love this little
00:00:34
unit it's
00:00:36
been amazing this is my sink most of the
00:00:39
stuff's purchased at Ikea or second hand
00:00:41
from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist
00:00:44
absolutely dig this style setup gives me
00:00:47
room to uh to maneuver and wash pans or
00:00:51
clothes if I so choose in my sink which
00:00:54
is uh sometimes part of the deal moving
00:00:56
on to my thermostat for my heater this
00:01:00
is the furnace right here it runs off
00:01:03
propane gets super hot in here sometimes
00:01:05
too hot moving on down to my water
00:01:08
heater it's a six gallon water heater it
00:01:10
takes about 30 to 45 minutes to heat up
00:01:12
so you got to kind of get
00:01:15
um you gotta if you want to shower in
00:01:17
the morning you start it first thing you
00:01:18
just keep getting ready until the water
00:01:20
is hot and ready to go this is my catch
00:01:23
just for the sink
00:01:24
I didn't Plumb in
00:01:27
um this whole part into the main
00:01:29
Plumbing area which I'll talk about more
00:01:31
on the shower over here
00:01:33
just got some knives and stuff most of
00:01:36
my cooking is done
00:01:37
either barbecuing or with the microwave
00:01:40
over here as we show the other part of
00:01:44
my extensive kitchen area
00:01:47
it's pretty it's pretty easy to just get
00:01:50
some Mills prepped in here and dialed in
00:01:53
with a portable propane stove that I
00:01:56
keep all the windows open for so moving
00:01:58
on to storage I built these out just it
00:02:01
was a super simple thing and I wanted
00:02:03
something quick and easy I normally just
00:02:06
put plastic totes in here and then run a
00:02:09
bungee across it's really modular if I
00:02:12
am bringing just some stuff on a quick
00:02:14
trip or if I'm whether I'm staying it
00:02:16
long term again I can just throw things
00:02:18
up here that I need from my house or if
00:02:21
it's long term I can just bring
00:02:23
everything in throw the bungee across
00:02:25
and I'm dialed in
00:02:26
really really convenient and things
00:02:29
can't really get cluttered which is my
00:02:33
main goal in here because it's really
00:02:34
easy for things to get out of control
00:02:36
moving on up to my roof fans these are
00:02:40
pretty great they're reversible I have
00:02:43
another one in the shower area back
00:02:44
there so I can usually just turn one on
00:02:46
and save power and it'll pull air
00:02:48
through which is great for cooking or
00:02:51
just to ventilate in the winter time
00:03:00
in the day uh I had gotten clean and
00:03:03
sober like a little over 10 years ago
00:03:05
and
00:03:06
credit wasn't good and I just gotten a
00:03:10
good job but the place that I was living
00:03:12
in a room that I was renting I was going
00:03:14
to lose it and I was going to be
00:03:16
homeless again
00:03:17
so I decided to start searching for
00:03:20
options to to build something out and I
00:03:24
found this U-Haul truck
00:03:25
at one of their old Lots in Oakland it
00:03:28
was
00:03:29
you know it's a U-Haul truck it was Bare
00:03:32
Bones and I loved it I seen it and I was
00:03:34
like I have a vision for this thing I
00:03:38
basically sat in the back of it for
00:03:39
about a year with a measuring tape and
00:03:42
watching YouTube videos and uh started
00:03:44
finding different designs and stuff that
00:03:46
I liked and uh eventually came up with
00:03:48
this welcome to the bathroom area this
00:03:51
is the shower and my compost toilet
00:03:53
we'll talk about that compost soil in a
00:03:55
second give you guys a first-hand view
00:03:57
of what it's like in here uh very
00:04:00
comfortable a lot of people have small
00:04:03
showers in their tiny homes in their
00:04:06
Vans I opted for a basically 32 inch
00:04:09
almost full size
00:04:11
shower because I like the space I don't
00:04:14
like to be cramped moving on to my
00:04:17
toilet this is a Nature's head
00:04:19
composting toilet I have had zero issues
00:04:22
with it it never smells it's great got
00:04:24
the sink here that flows directly into
00:04:27
the shower uh just a quick hack plumbing
00:04:30
job on this one I wanted a place to be
00:04:32
able to brush my teeth if I have my girl
00:04:34
on here I can be doing my thing in here
00:04:36
she could be cooking and using that
00:04:37
which was nice this is my main uh gray
00:04:41
water tank flow so this guy here and the
00:04:44
shower both flow directly down to a 46
00:04:46
gallon gray water tank and we'll talk
00:04:49
about the full size 46 gallon fresh
00:04:52
water tank hiding underneath the seat
00:04:55
there in just a moment but I'm pretty
00:04:58
happy with how the shower area turned
00:05:00
out it's it's definitely a big area to
00:05:04
to take up in a van but for anybody
00:05:06
that's lived in the van for any extended
00:05:08
amount of time you really need to pry
00:05:11
prioritize keeping clean and shower and
00:05:14
it's without this you're searching for
00:05:16
gyms and you're searching for other
00:05:17
places to shower and it's just
00:05:19
it it takes the fun right out of it real
00:05:21
quick so
00:05:23
A Plus on the shower definitely go big
00:05:25
this is my fireplace I've never used it
00:05:27
I put it in here mistakes were made I
00:05:30
love it uh the idea was that I was going
00:05:32
to move to Alaska with this and I never
00:05:34
moved to Alaska because I got a good job
00:05:36
and I stayed here in California
00:05:39
um that's just the way it worked out
00:05:42
used
00:05:43
but damn do I want to fire this thing up
00:05:46
but I don't want people to think I'm
00:05:47
cooking drugs in here or something on
00:05:49
some California street so I uh I've
00:05:53
never used it but it's a salamander
00:05:55
stove it is not light it is heavy just
00:05:58
like most things in this vehicle because
00:06:00
they're basically purchased at household
00:06:02
stores
00:06:03
it's a great Learning lesson in regards
00:06:05
to building in what is a priority I
00:06:08
thought that by having this I wouldn't
00:06:10
have to have propane and if I ended up
00:06:12
in the wilderness in Alaska I could just
00:06:14
go out and get wood I could cook I could
00:06:16
you know boil water clean water and I
00:06:20
can keep warm and it made a lot of sense
00:06:22
at the time
00:06:23
part of the deal and then I got my board
00:06:25
here truck board just in case I need to
00:06:28
skate somewhere get somewhere to get
00:06:29
some lunch or something
00:06:31
moving on to the seating area
00:06:34
again with the Ikea we love Ikea Ikea is
00:06:38
amazing I got these second hand and I
00:06:41
just tore them apart and just used the
00:06:43
wooden frame
00:06:45
and just put the seat in so it was kind
00:06:47
of like a rocking chair kind of a deal
00:06:49
very comfortable
00:06:51
there's a 46 gallon water tank built
00:06:54
into here
00:06:55
that was the main thing and then I just
00:06:58
kind of found these chairs that fit in
00:06:59
there perfectly
00:07:01
um water source 40 plus gallons of water
00:07:05
is for me it's it's a minimum I like to
00:07:09
take a few minute showers and I can
00:07:11
probably if I'm showering every day
00:07:13
I mean maybe it's uh
00:07:15
I don't know seven days before I'd have
00:07:17
to fill my water tanks again so I I used
00:07:20
to play my PS4 in here a lot and I have
00:07:22
a DVD player and stuff I dig it I dig
00:07:25
this spot I built this little
00:07:28
guy here so I could eat and chill and
00:07:31
have the computer going and watching TV
00:07:34
there's a cable set up but if I were to
00:07:38
keep this thing I'd probably get
00:07:40
starlink and Go full internet access I
00:07:43
think that would be the next move with
00:07:47
this setup
00:07:48
uh moving on into
00:07:51
our power source here
00:07:54
um I just pulled out some AGM batteries
00:07:57
which are lead acid batteries and I put
00:08:00
in one battleborn lithium 100 amp hour
00:08:03
12 volt battery
00:08:04
3000 watt pure sine wave inverter from
00:08:07
Ames midnight solar classic 150 charge
00:08:10
controller this is where the power comes
00:08:13
in from the solar panels and everything
00:08:15
in between this is all your 12 volt
00:08:16
switches for your you know your furnace
00:08:19
your water heater your fans lights
00:08:22
Etc
00:08:23
then you got your standard lights here
00:08:25
for above that are on a regular
00:08:29
110. I got my water pump back there and
00:08:33
I got a
00:08:35
AC 110 uh big box back there for my
00:08:39
circuits which is overkill this whole
00:08:41
system is kind of overkill for for this
00:08:43
situation here but I wanted to make sure
00:08:46
I was comfortable there's plenty of room
00:08:48
back there to upgrade
00:08:50
to more lithium there's only one 100 amp
00:08:53
hour battery
00:08:54
you could easily fit seven more in there
00:08:57
and just never need power again welcome
00:09:00
to the master bedroom area full size
00:09:03
twin uh a lot of my friends are like
00:09:06
dude you have no Headroom trust me when
00:09:08
I tell you this is plenty of Headroom uh
00:09:10
I've slept up here and uh probably over
00:09:14
400 nights
00:09:16
um it's not a big deal in fact I can
00:09:18
keep my heater
00:09:20
um working less often because it stays
00:09:22
quite a bit warmer up here so that was
00:09:24
nice to have the bed up in the Grandma's
00:09:26
Attic area
00:09:27
um
00:09:28
super comfortable there is a secondary
00:09:31
pad here if you find that it's too much
00:09:34
too close too claustrophobic for you but
00:09:38
for me I found that it was just right
00:09:40
not a big deal getting up and down from
00:09:42
there as well is pretty straightforward
00:09:43
I like to reuse materials as often as I
00:09:46
can and I found
00:09:48
all this bamboo flooring for like 200
00:09:50
bucks which was a total steal it's
00:09:54
definitely beautiful and heavy that's a
00:09:57
trade-off but this thing is is styling I
00:10:02
don't think I'd be able to have come up
00:10:04
with such a good looking interior with
00:10:06
my woodworking skills so when I found
00:10:11
this I was like done all I got to do is
00:10:13
stack it up like Legos put the trim in
00:10:15
and uh and I was very happy with the
00:10:18
outcome it really turned the whole
00:10:20
interior into something that I that I
00:10:24
didn't anticipate which was quite
00:10:25
beautiful in my opinion so very stoked
00:10:28
on that
00:10:33
[Music]
00:10:35
in my opinion building out a box truck
00:10:39
is super affordable
00:10:42
you don't have to get all the small
00:10:44
components like you see in the Sprinter
00:10:46
vans and the promasters ETC because
00:10:48
there's a lot more space to work with so
00:10:50
you can buy household items that fit
00:10:53
into these spaces I.E these couches TV
00:10:57
Etc
00:10:58
so I probably spent
00:11:01
I don't know
00:11:03
10K or something it's been it's been a
00:11:06
while since I've even thought about the
00:11:07
amount that's been spent on this project
00:11:09
it does add up you know buying a sink
00:11:13
from Ikea is going to be you know 350
00:11:15
bucks and
00:11:16
their silly little uh faucet is going to
00:11:19
be you know 250 dollars like just as an
00:11:22
example the refrigerators uh I think I
00:11:25
got it for 1200 fireplace another
00:11:27
thousand dollars piping another eight
00:11:29
hundred dollars
00:11:31
um you know the propane thing outside I
00:11:33
think it was 700
00:11:35
you know water tanks 300 a piece
00:11:38
the toilet another thousand I mean I'm
00:11:41
probably over 10K right there the
00:11:42
electrical components you know it all
00:11:45
adds up
00:11:46
um
00:11:47
but it's doable it's manageable it's one
00:11:49
of those things where you can go and you
00:11:51
know from one check you go buy your some
00:11:53
of your electronic components and the
00:11:55
next one you get something else here and
00:11:56
there and
00:11:58
um it allowed me to kind of try and find
00:12:00
things used but really the only thing I
00:12:03
was able to really get used was a lot of
00:12:06
the materials like you see with the the
00:12:08
bamboo flooring which was a nice come up
00:12:12
and also
00:12:14
a shout out to Ikea used section uh
00:12:17
there I got my countertops there I
00:12:20
believe that was so yeah it's it's it
00:12:23
can get expensive but it's
00:12:26
um it's well worth it it's one of the
00:12:28
best projects that I've ever done
00:12:30
personally it's helped me to get my mind
00:12:33
to a place it's really important for me
00:12:35
to to try and do projects like these I
00:12:38
found super satisfying uh you know at
00:12:42
the end of the day at the end of this
00:12:43
project to look back at you know all the
00:12:46
stuff and the research that I've done
00:12:47
the people that I've met and I've talked
00:12:49
to to come all this way and put this
00:12:51
together and I lived in it for over a
00:12:53
year
00:12:54
and I'll tell you it was uh it was
00:12:58
definitely
00:13:00
um
00:13:01
a labor of love and I'm stoked to
00:13:03
finally have it done
00:13:04
welcome to the outside portion of the
00:13:07
Tiny House Tour
00:13:09
this is a recycled RV door I picked up
00:13:13
at a salvage yard in Sacramento this was
00:13:16
a super tight fit it just barely got in
00:13:19
there and uh I like it it's a double
00:13:22
Locking System
00:13:24
so it locks the handle and then also
00:13:26
locks the door overall
00:13:28
which is nice I haven't had any issues
00:13:31
with it since I installed it and
00:13:33
it was a good 300 well spent and I got
00:13:36
to reuse some material
00:13:38
I got the windows from the same place
00:13:39
they're perfect you know it's it's
00:13:42
really nice to be able to let in a good
00:13:45
amount of light and a good amount of air
00:13:46
on beautiful days like this where you
00:13:49
just get to open everything up and kind
00:13:50
of just in bring the outside in uh this
00:13:53
is herculiner it's a it's a bed liner
00:13:58
for pickup trucks I sprayed it on a
00:14:01
while ago some small mistakes were made
00:14:03
but it is extremely durable
00:14:07
branches and sticks and car doors stand
00:14:11
no chance against this stuff uh I
00:14:14
repainted every year or two with just
00:14:17
some house paint to freshen it up
00:14:20
I mean it's just bulletproofing uh this
00:14:23
is a if you guys didn't notice a retired
00:14:25
U-Haul truck so there was a lot of uh
00:14:29
dents and other random stuff that I
00:14:32
sanded out and I wanted to make sure
00:14:34
that everything was sealed properly uh
00:14:37
and and this material uh definitely fit
00:14:40
that bill and everything I haven't had
00:14:42
one issue with any kind of water
00:14:44
intrusion uh and that's a big part with
00:14:47
these Vans is there's a lot of places
00:14:49
water can get in and going above and
00:14:52
beyond with this kind of stuff really
00:14:53
really made the difference I got some
00:14:55
weather guard giant boxes up front uh
00:14:58
paper towels toilet paper uh random
00:15:01
cleaning supplies uh things you're just
00:15:04
not using in the summertime I'll put a
00:15:06
lot of my winter gear in there
00:15:08
it's just it's a lot going on up front a
00:15:12
little mad max-ish with the spare tires
00:15:15
but for me I wanted a place to to put
00:15:19
all my stuff and didn't clutter the
00:15:21
inside of the tiny house it's a very big
00:15:23
part for me to to keep that space clean
00:15:26
and his anybody that's lived in a van
00:15:28
you know you move things like eight
00:15:30
times and then you have to put
00:15:31
everything back it's not a lot of fun uh
00:15:33
this solved that problem for me and so
00:15:36
everything up front here is basically
00:15:38
Unistrut very very strong and it also
00:15:41
acts as a kind of aftermarket bumper if
00:15:45
you will if I were to get into a fender
00:15:46
bender or a deer or something late at
00:15:49
night when I'm driving this would help
00:15:51
to protect my radiator and I also got
00:15:53
some crazy light bars up there
00:15:55
up top got some solar up there eight 100
00:15:58
watt energy panels uh two four string
00:16:01
two strings
00:16:03
of 400 panels a piece in parallel so
00:16:06
they're basically just one big panel all
00:16:09
right this is a Honda generator it's a
00:16:11
Honda eu3000 is it is one of the most
00:16:14
reliable and quiet generators ever built
00:16:17
uh I took my passenger seat out and I
00:16:21
used more Unistrut a shorter style
00:16:22
Unistrut to mount it in here to keep
00:16:25
thieves from thinking they can just pull
00:16:26
it right out and also to keep it in
00:16:29
place if I ever were to get into a
00:16:30
serious accident there's also some
00:16:33
rubber dampeners in there as well in
00:16:35
between the metal so when this thing is
00:16:36
running it's it's not going to vibrate
00:16:39
the cab loose on this side I have an
00:16:41
exhaust Port that runs through the floor
00:16:42
and out I run this thing numerous times
00:16:45
in the winter when it's been cloudy for
00:16:48
days on end and I have no power coming
00:16:49
through to my solar I open my windows a
00:16:52
bit to keep fresh air coming in and it
00:16:55
sends the exhaust out it works a charm
00:16:58
you know it's all about what works for
00:17:02
for you and for me I needed power I
00:17:05
needed a safe place to keep my generator
00:17:07
so the logical thing for me was take the
00:17:10
seat out put this in and it's been one
00:17:13
of my best investments yet so very
00:17:15
stoked to be able to have power on
00:17:17
demand
00:17:18
welcome to the back this is uh the
00:17:21
garage kind of sorta so
00:17:24
it's one of my favorite things about
00:17:26
this is uh rolling this up and if I'm
00:17:29
going somewhere uh that I can you know
00:17:31
bring my motorcycle if it makes sense
00:17:33
and just pull this out
00:17:36
and then I can uh
00:17:40
liner up and push my motorcycle right in
00:17:43
there I have some tie down points
00:17:46
kind of hidden around this is super
00:17:47
strong so I also tie down off of this
00:17:50
and my motorcycle goes right in and I'm
00:17:53
ready for a weekend or a week of fun
00:17:56
out in the back country
00:17:57
a lot of times too when we do go camping
00:18:00
it's super nice just to roll this door
00:18:02
up and and just hang out right here on
00:18:05
the back
00:18:06
barbecue close by living living my best
00:18:09
life
00:18:19
the way I use it now is more along the
00:18:22
lines of like a weekend warrior I
00:18:24
stopped living in it a few months ago
00:18:26
and now I'm just sending it on weekends
00:18:30
to beautiful places
00:18:32
um
00:18:33
that's it it's uh it's a fun weekend
00:18:37
warrior at this point but it's time to
00:18:40
to find somebody who wants to put this
00:18:43
in there in their mother's yard or take
00:18:46
it on trips to uh Moab don't go too
00:18:48
off-road with it
00:18:50
um you know it's it's ready for maybe
00:18:52
The Tech Guy in San Francisco that
00:18:54
doesn't want to pay you know two
00:18:55
thousand dollars a month rent
00:18:57
um the student that wants to get away
00:19:01
from his uh dorm roommates because
00:19:03
they're super loud and they want to
00:19:04
sleep it's a it's a a good medium for a
00:19:07
lot of people out there it's just time
00:19:09

Inside, you'll find all the amenities of a modern home, including a dual zone fridge/freezer combo, a deep sink, a microwave, and plenty of counter space. The bathroom has a sink, a Nature's Head compost toilet, and a full shower. And although Jimmy has never used it, a beautiful wood-burning stove adds a cozy touch to the interior. The main seating area faces a massive TV monitor and a pop-up table for dining or working. The ceiling and walls are covered in stylish bamboo flooring, and the bed is elevated for added space. The exterior of this tiny home is just as impressive, with substantial storage boxes and spare tires mounted above the cab. He even installed a recycled RV door for added character! And with 800 watts of solar power, you can enjoy all the comforts of home while being completely off-grid.
