Der französische Denker René Descartes (1596-1650 n.Chr.) ist einer der bekanntesten Philosophen der Welt. Sein kleiner Satz ‚Ich denke, also bin ich‘ ist zum Kulturgut der gesamten Menschheit geworden. Descartes gilt als Begründer des Rationalismus und als ‚Vater der modernen Philosophie‘. Diesen Ehrentitel hat er durchaus verdient, denn zu seiner Zeit wagt er etwas Bahnbrechendes. Ähnlich wie Kolumbus einen bis dahin unbekannten Kontinent, die sogenannte ‚Neue Welt‘ entdeckt, gelingt es Descartes, eine ganz neue Dimension des Wissens zu erschließen und unseren Blick auf die Welt grundlegend zu verändern. Man kann sagen, es gibt eine Welt vor und eine Welt nach Descartes. Er hat an die Stelle des Glaubens das Wissen gesetzt. Sein Kerngedanke, der sogenannte Cartesische Dualismus, ist tief in die DNA unseres modernen Denkens eingegangen. Er ist – wie viele große philosophische Entdeckungen – Fluch und Segen zugleich. Denn die Aufgabe des Menschen ist es, so Descartes, mit Hilfe der "res cogitans", also unserem Denken die "res extensa", also die äußere Welt der ausgedehnten Natur zu erkennen, zu analysieren und komplett zu beherrschen. Wir müssen uns, so Descartes wörtlich, zum "Herrn und Meister der Natur" aufschwingen. Dieser sogenannte Cartesische Dualismus prägt bis heute unserer Selbstverständnis. Descartes ist letztlich mehr als nur ein Wegbereiter der modernen Wissenschaft, in gewisser Hinsicht wird sein Denken zu unserem Schicksal, im Positiven wie Negativen. Gezeigt wird im Vortrag aber auch, dass der methodische Zweifel von Descartes gerade in unserer moderen Mediengesellschaft von brennender Aktiualität und Notwendigkeit ist. Wir leben in einer Narrativgesellschaft und benötigen angesichts der Vielzahl konkurrierender Erzählungen im Grunde durchgehend einen prinzipiellen, methodischen Zweifel - auch gegenüber Regierungen. Das Buch, "Descartes in 60 Minuten" das dem Vortrag zugrunde liegt, ist in der Reihe ‚Große Denker in 60 Minuten‘ erschienen, die inzwischen weltweit in sechs Sprachen übersetzt wird.
