Nel corso delle ultime due decadi la ricerca neuroscientifica ha prodotto dati significativi a sostegno dell’ipotesi che l’ADHD sia caratterizzato da una particolare traiettoria di sviluppo di aree cerebrali e circuiti tra esse nel sistema corticale, sottocorticale e cerebellare. Questo processo influenza il decorso temporale delle manifestazioni cliniche del disturbo e a sua volta è influenzato in negativo o in positivo da fattori ambientali e interventi terapeutici. Inoltre, queste dinamiche neuroevolutive spiegano almeno in parte l’associazione dell’ADHD con un decorso spesso caratterizzato dal progressivo sviluppo di varie comorbidità, incluse le dipendenze patologiche.
