Современный город отдаленно напоминает прошлый Целиноград - центр целинного края и Акмолу. За эти годы изменились очертания улиц, облики площадей. В просторной, широкой и вольной степи на левом берегу реки Есиль (Ишим) вырос новый, современный и красивый город. Но наша память хранит детские, юношеские и студенческие воспоминания о Целинограде - городе, в котором мы жили, росли, любили, строили планы на будущее и который многие покинули в прошлом... © Автор: Данил Конищев. Продолжительность 8 минут. Тел.: +77013258671. Историческая справка: в 1992 году город переименован в Акмолу, что в переводе с казахского языка означает «Белая Святыня» (или «Белая могила»). Это объясняется тем, что в 20 километрах от города находится одноимённое урочище, на вершине белого известнякового холма которого похоронен местный почитаемый Абылай ханом кипчак Нияз би. 6 июля 1994 года было принято постановление Верховного Совета Казахстана о переносе столицы из Алматы в Акмолу. 10 декабря 1997 года Президент Казахстана Нурсултан Назарбаев принял окончательное решение о переносе столицы. Однако международное представление Акмолы в качестве новой столицы состоялось уже 10 июня 1998 года. 6 мая 1998 года Указом Президента Казахстана город Акмола был переименован в город Астана.
