00:01:02
the five seven by 28 caliber has always
00:01:04
been really interesting to me they first
00:01:06
developed it in 1990 through nato
00:01:09
with the fn
00:01:11
ps90 and then the fn57
00:01:15
which was a pistol to fire that same
00:01:17
round it's a small neck down little
00:01:19
bullet it is center fire and this was
00:01:22
actually designed for more close quarter
00:01:24
type combat it doesn't over penetrate
00:01:26
and yet it has really high velocities
00:01:28
and can actually go through body armor
00:01:30
at least level one or level two body
00:01:32
armor and it's one of those calibers
00:01:34
that was designed for combat since that
00:01:37
time there have been a number of
00:01:38
different firearms that have been
00:01:40
brought to market
00:01:41
including the ruger 57 which we've done
00:01:44
a review on it and now the psa rock one
00:01:47
of the things about that caliber is
00:01:49
super light recoil
00:01:51
i mean it's almost like shooting a 22 or
00:01:53
22 magnum and yet you're getting some
00:01:56
really good self-defense ballistics and
00:01:58
so it makes it very appealing for those
00:02:00
who want light recoil those who are
00:02:02
sensitive to recoil or those that are
00:02:04
new shooters and it's a very flat
00:02:06
trajectory now out of the rifle you can
00:02:08
get 200 yards
00:02:10
out of a pistol definitely considerably
00:02:12
less than that but still it's a very
00:02:14
accurate round but there's a number of
00:02:16
different carbines and small rifles that
00:02:19
are being produced in 5.7 now one of the
00:02:21
big problems with five seven right now
00:02:23
is that the price is pretty high in fact
00:02:25
it's about fifty dollars a box and
00:02:27
that's what i've been paying for it uh
00:02:29
even at psa which they have it there it
00:02:31
was funny i was looking at one of my
00:02:33
older videos for the fn57 and i quoted
00:02:36
16.99 for a box of ammunition so
00:02:39
hopefully this will come back down to at
00:02:41
least a more reasonable price but at
00:02:44
this point right now
00:02:45
this is what we're getting but it's a
00:02:47
very high performing round now one of
00:02:49
the big things about using this as a
00:02:50
self-defense option is you need to make
00:02:52
sure your ammo is self-defense ready and
00:02:55
we'll take a look at that when we do our
00:02:57
table top
00:02:58
but again guys this is a real pleasure
00:03:02
to shoot at the range it's very easy the
00:03:04
recoil is mild
00:03:05
one thing though is that it does have
00:03:08
quite a bit of sound to it i mean it's
00:03:10
pretty loud but man it is a lot of fun
00:03:13
to shoot
00:03:21
now palmetto state armory has just
00:03:22
released the psa rock 5.7 and we really
00:03:26
appreciate those guys for sending the
00:03:28
rock 57 for this review
00:03:31
now the beautiful thing about the 5.7
00:03:33
caliber is that it's thinner thinner
00:03:36
than your 9-millimeter thinner than a
00:03:37
lot of your self-defense calibers so
00:03:39
you're going to be able to get more
00:03:40
rounds in your magazine in fact 23
00:03:43
rounds plus one in the chamber that's
00:03:46
going to give you a lot of capability a
00:03:48
lot of ammunition and of course you do
00:03:50
get two magazines with the pistol now
00:03:52
there are some plus sides there are some
00:03:54
downsides and we're going to try to go
00:03:55
through it but for the 5.7 caliber it's
00:03:58
really hung in there and it's getting
00:04:01
more and more popularity because there
00:04:03
are a lot of great features of the five
00:04:05
seven caliber the five seven by twenty
00:04:07
eights in the middle the five five six
00:04:09
or 223 is here on the right and then we
00:04:11
have nine millimeter and it's thirty
00:04:14
percent less recoil than your nine
00:04:16
millimeter so it's going to be really
00:04:18
softer shooting a lot less muzzle flip
00:04:20
when it comes to the 556 or the 223
00:04:23
you're getting considerably more
00:04:25
velocity but you're typically shooting
00:04:27
that out of a rifle or a pistol with a
00:04:29
brace on it there's no actual parent
00:04:31
case for the 5.7 but it was designed
00:04:34
really close to the 22 hornet but now
00:04:36
the rock is taking on that palmetto
00:04:38
state armory look and with the dagger
00:04:41
which we have one right here um same
00:04:43
kind of lines designs a lot of the cuts
00:04:46
it's nice to see palmetto state armory
00:04:48
really starting to have their own style
00:04:51
with the regular ar15s i mean there's a
00:04:53
lot of different ones out there but this
00:04:55
is giving palmetto state a little bit of
00:04:57
a different look i think we're going to
00:04:58
be seeing more things coming now this
00:05:00
one has one of the wheaton arms
00:05:01
flat-faced triggers and one of their
00:05:03
barrels so it's not quite stock but this
00:05:06
takes all of your glock parts but with
00:05:08
that styling i mean the texturing right
00:05:10
here is excellent i mean it is really
00:05:14
soft in a sense but once you grip it i
00:05:16
mean it gives you a lot of grip ability
00:05:18
with it uh you don't slip there's no
00:05:21
movement i mean it just bites down
00:05:24
it's not slick and we also have memory
00:05:27
pads right here at the top now let's go
00:05:29
ahead and drop our
00:05:30
23 round magazine which is all steel
00:05:32
this is a proprietary magazine from
00:05:35
palmetto state armory this does not fit
00:05:38
the ruger 5.7 or the 5.7 it fits it so
00:05:41
there is a little bit of a difference
00:05:42
and your standard fn magazines don't fit
00:05:45
as well
00:05:46
but they're fairly reasonable in price
00:05:48
and i don't have a price for them yet
00:05:50
but i've heard through the grapevine
00:05:51
that they're going to be very reasonable
00:05:53
which is typical for psa we're going to
00:05:55
check our chamber and the guns empty now
00:05:58
one of the things about it because of
00:05:59
the 5.7 round and because of its length
00:06:02
you know you've got to have a magazine
00:06:04
that's kind of long and it's longer than
00:06:06
a lot of your other self-defense
00:06:07
calibers and that makes this part of the
00:06:09
grip a little bit longer but it also is
00:06:12
very thin and you have some palm swells
00:06:15
here that are really nice
00:06:16
it fits in your hand nice but it's
00:06:19
definitely a bit of a larger pistol this
00:06:21
is not something for concealed carry
00:06:23
and the magazine goes in you can see the
00:06:25
little small lips here in case you have
00:06:26
any kind of malfunction you can just
00:06:28
pull those out
00:06:29
and you have your palmetto state logo on
00:06:31
the bottom the slide is a qpq or
00:06:35
quenched polished quenched finish but
00:06:37
it's really close to black nitride which
00:06:39
is going to hold up really well
00:06:42
your magazine release is steel it's
00:06:44
right here it can be switched to the
00:06:46
other side and then you have your slide
00:06:48
stop right here
00:06:50
and you can just engage it really easily
00:06:53
but it's not ambidextrous
00:06:55
and of course these panels i love
00:06:57
because i can put my fingers just a
00:06:59
memory pad almost put it right here when
00:07:01
i want to get my finger out of the
00:07:03
trigger guard and also when you have
00:07:04
that two-handed grip it gives you a
00:07:06
place to put your thumb and it holds
00:07:08
right next to the frame which helps
00:07:10
mitigate recoil but guys seriously on
00:07:13
this pistol there is little recoil your
00:07:15
takedown tabs are a little bit different
00:07:17
they're right here and we'll show you
00:07:19
when we disassemble it picatinny rail
00:07:21
you have three slots and then you have
00:07:24
more of an angled kind of a hook on the
00:07:27
trigger guard ample room for gloved
00:07:29
hands and then it has a nice undercut
00:07:32
right here with a small little finger
00:07:35
groove and then it goes down and it kind
00:07:37
of bows out a little bit
00:07:39
you've got your real high ride right
00:07:41
here so you're able to get high up on
00:07:43
the pistol
00:07:44
much lower bore axis than your fn57 for
00:07:48
sure that has a really high bore axis
00:07:51
but this gets it down there really close
00:07:53
to your hand the sights are three dot
00:07:56
and i believe these are glock compatible
00:07:58
sights
00:08:00
but they are steel and they show up
00:08:02
really well slick on the top uh i love
00:08:05
the slide it has a beautiful finish to
00:08:07
it
00:08:08
front and rear cocking serrations
00:08:11
and really because of the weight of the
00:08:13
spring it doesn't take a lot to pull
00:08:15
that back the trigger is with the blade
00:08:18
safety
00:08:19
and that way you've got to actually
00:08:20
depress the trigger to be able to fire
00:08:22
it
00:08:23
and it is fairly straight down more than
00:08:26
a curved trigger
00:08:28
and we'll look at the trigger action but
00:08:30
it really has a nice clean break to it i
00:08:32
mean the styling on the slide is really
00:08:34
nice i mean it's been well done i mean
00:08:36
they have the cut down here
00:08:38
and on either side so it just gives it a
00:08:41
really nice look to the pistol all on
00:08:43
its own now again it is a fairly large
00:08:45
pistol as you can see
00:08:47
but it's definitely such a soft shooting
00:08:49
handgun i have done a review on the fn57
00:08:53
i really like the pistol it's very
00:08:54
unorthodox though it's a different type
00:08:56
pistol it's a little bit clunky
00:08:58
and it's expensive so when ruger
00:09:00
introduced their 5.7
00:09:03
i was really interested in getting a
00:09:04
hold of one and these are considerably
00:09:06
less than the fns and to me honestly
00:09:09
more shootable i like this handgun but
00:09:12
it does have a internal hammer
00:09:15
so the trigger pull is a little bit more
00:09:17
involved than the psa this is a striker
00:09:20
fire pistol
00:09:21
but overall this is a really nice
00:09:23
shooting gun i really like it and to be
00:09:25
honest it's about the same size as the
00:09:28
psa
00:09:29
rock maybe a little bit larger i think
00:09:32
it comes out about
00:09:33
three quarters of an inch
00:09:35
but the grips are the same now this one
00:09:37
has a 20 round capacity while your psa
00:09:41
has a 23 round capacity and again these
00:09:43
magazines do not interchange
00:09:46
but this is what got me started back
00:09:47
into the 5.7 and then of course when psa
00:09:50
introduced this and we'll talk about the
00:09:53
price but that's one of the things
00:09:54
that's really appealing about the psa
00:09:57
uh is it comes in at a more reasonable
00:09:59
price and you're going to need that
00:10:01
considering the price of the 5.7 at this
00:10:03
point
00:10:04
we are going to be doing a comparison
00:10:05
review with the ruger 5.7 with the psa
00:10:08
rock 5.7
00:10:09
and also we're going to add in the rock
00:10:12
island armory tcm 22 which is one of my
00:10:15
favorite calibers and they are very
00:10:18
close and so we're going to do some
00:10:19
ballistic tests we're going to test do
00:10:21
some gel tests and some different things
00:10:23
just to see the differences
00:10:25
but this is going to come in at a
00:10:27
totally different pistol design than the
00:10:30
22 tcm at this point
00:10:32
now let's check the trigger pull action
00:10:34
we have a little bit of take up right
00:10:36
here
00:10:38
really short take up i mean it's right
00:10:39
there and it hits the wall
00:10:42
and a really crisp break
00:10:45
reset
00:10:48
right there really nice reset
00:10:51
that is really a nice trigger
00:10:53
trigger pull weight with our lyman
00:10:54
trigger gauge and brownells
00:10:58
five pounds 5.3 ounces
00:11:02
5 pounds 5.7 ounces
00:11:04
now i do want to talk about the
00:11:06
magazines they do have witness holes all
00:11:08
the way down to 23 rounds
00:11:10
very nicely formed metal magazines now
00:11:13
one of the downsides is definitely ammo
00:11:15
cost at this point uh five sevens
00:11:18
running about fifty dollars a box
00:11:20
picked up some federal at the psa
00:11:23
also some fn
00:11:25
and uh
00:11:26
one thing i like though is the way it
00:11:27
loads it loads from the top
00:11:29
just like your ar15
00:11:32
in fact it looks like a mini 556 or 223
00:11:36
but that makes it really easy to load
00:11:38
and these magazines again are similar to
00:11:40
your steel ar15 mags
00:11:43
but when you're loading
00:11:44
23 rounds it'd be nice to use a mag lula
00:11:49
but it's not really difficult to push
00:11:50
those in
00:11:53
and this being a dollar around we're not
00:11:55
gonna be doing any mac dumps
00:11:59
maybe one
00:12:10
now when it comes to 5.7 uh i've done a
00:12:12
full review on the fn57 also the ruger
00:12:16
5.7
00:12:17
great shooting guns
00:12:19
one thing i like about the ruger is that
00:12:21
it's a lot less expensive than the fn
00:12:24
and i kind of really like the design a
00:12:25
little bit better the fn is a little bit
00:12:28
different it's just got a different look
00:12:29
to it a different feel to it but again
00:12:32
it's really expensive when it came to
00:12:34
the rock
00:12:35
this is a great shooting gun the
00:12:38
ergonomics are fantastic i love the grip
00:12:41
on this that texturing they are fairly
00:12:43
large pistols but they have this really
00:12:46
large round and really going at really
00:12:47
incredible velocities and yet the recoil
00:12:50
is about nothing we really enjoyed
00:12:53
shooting it it's just a super flat
00:12:55
shooting gun but you can feel the power
00:12:57
coming out of an end with this link it's
00:13:00
very pointable and i'm just curious to
00:13:02
see what palmetto state armory is going
00:13:04
to come up next if they're going to
00:13:06
expand this line or not a nice red dot
00:13:08
would be great
00:13:17
be honest with these my first shots
00:13:20
and uh recoil super mild super mild
00:13:24
which i've shot five seven before
00:13:26
but you had that really high velocity so
00:13:28
it's it's loud and if you're shooting it
00:13:30
without hearing protection you're gonna
00:13:32
know it
00:13:33
but such a smooth shooting gun
00:13:36
and yet a fairly effective caliber
00:13:38
being a 5.7
00:13:41
and
00:13:42
you know it was designed as a small arms
00:13:44
close in combat cartridge so
00:13:47
but uh man that thing
00:13:49
the force coming out does not seem like
00:13:51
the recoil that you're getting back
00:13:53
just a real smooth shooting gun now guys
00:13:56
we put about 250 rounds through the rock
00:13:59
and that's less than what i like to
00:14:00
usually typically put through them
00:14:02
but with the cost of ammo being about a
00:14:04
buck a piece that was 250 dollars and
00:14:06
i've been buying this up as i can at 50
00:14:09
dollars a box but as far as reliability
00:14:11
goes we had one malfunction
00:14:19
and guys other than that one malfunction
00:14:21
or that failure to eject that was the
00:14:23
only issue that we had the whole time
00:14:25
granted it is a limited round count and
00:14:27
we'll know more coming up but overall i
00:14:30
mean it was just a smooth shooting gun
00:14:32
but guys when it comes to accuracy
00:14:34
this thing is a beast
00:14:52
now as far as disassembly we're going to
00:14:54
drop our magazine check the chamber it's
00:14:56
empty
00:14:57
these are your take down tabs and so you
00:14:59
want to first pull your trigger take
00:15:01
your take down tabs what i do is i pull
00:15:03
back a little bit and then pull forward
00:15:05
and then it comes right off of the rail
00:15:08
and if you'll notice there are tabs here
00:15:10
and here that correspond with your rails
00:15:14
on the firearm
00:15:15
so it's a little bit different
00:15:17
actually kind of like the canning
00:15:19
and then we take our recoil spring and
00:15:21
guide rod
00:15:22
really hefty spring all steel
00:15:25
and then we take out our barrel now one
00:15:27
thing's about this barrel is it's fluted
00:15:29
and so it's going to lessen the weight
00:15:32
but uh it's really more of a blowback
00:15:34
type striker fire pistol so it has kind
00:15:37
of a unique design
00:15:39
the inside of the slide is beautiful i
00:15:42
mean the finishing on this is just like
00:15:44
a mirror finish almost i mean they
00:15:46
really did a great job there's no
00:15:48
tooling marks
00:15:49
and then when it goes to the frame
00:15:51
again we've got our locking block here
00:15:54
and our rails and then back here are our
00:15:56
rails and so it's a little bit different
00:15:58
they fit on the inside into the frame
00:16:01
which is a little bit different than
00:16:02
your standard pistol
00:16:04
but it still pretty much works the same
00:16:06
and then of course you have your slide
00:16:08
rails all the way through the slide
00:16:11
but that's pretty much all you need to
00:16:12
do to field strip for reassembly we're
00:16:14
going to bring in our barrel
00:16:17
bring in our recoil spring and notice
00:16:19
this little tab you want to depress it
00:16:21
when you engage your recoil spring
00:16:25
and then just take the pistol and look
00:16:27
for those little tabs
00:16:28
drop it and you spring it back and it
00:16:31
goes right back into place
00:16:33
so it's really simple and
00:16:35
just doesn't take much time the hardest
00:16:37
thing that i had to overcome was pulling
00:16:39
down the tabs and actually pulling it
00:16:42
back a little bit so it would go forward
00:16:44
so that may be a trick if you're having
00:16:45
any kind of issues but overall very
00:16:47
simple design and yet for a really cool
00:16:50
caliber as far as ammo choices there are
00:16:52
a lot that have been developed in 2022
00:16:55
you know i don't know what the ammo
00:16:56
situation is with five seven by twenty
00:16:58
eight because there has been a pretty
00:17:00
big disruption and guys i'm sure that
00:17:02
there's other ammunition out there and
00:17:04
as more ammunition becomes available
00:17:06
again which it has been
00:17:08
these rounds are going to be more
00:17:09
available one thing about the federal is
00:17:12
i'm seeing it a lot and so it's really
00:17:14
good to see it but again it is fairly
00:17:16
expensive at this point
00:17:19
so a dollar around and some of these are
00:17:20
going to even go up above that in fact i
00:17:23
believe the fn was about 60 a box so
00:17:26
it'll just add a little bit to it the
00:17:27
rnr weapon systems and this is a 40
00:17:30
grain bullet but it's fragmented and it
00:17:33
has a jacketed hollow point
00:17:35
and this is really an excellent
00:17:36
self-defense round so you really want
00:17:39
something that will penetrate but you
00:17:41
also want something that will expand
00:17:42
especially in these calibers but another
00:17:45
option is to save your brass and you can
00:17:47
reload because it is a center fire
00:17:50
caliber
00:17:51
and one of the things about this
00:17:53
compared to a 22 magnum is the 22 magnum
00:17:56
is rimfired it's not going to be as
00:17:58
reliable as your centerfire ammunition
00:18:00
plus the velocities are not anywhere
00:18:02
near your five seven by twenty eight
00:18:05
now it comes in this really nice soft
00:18:07
case has a identity tag here with psa
00:18:11
then when we open it up
00:18:13
here we've got your pistol it is secured
00:18:15
into the case even has a muzzle guard at
00:18:17
the front and you have magazine pouches
00:18:20
here and here and we have our lock
00:18:24
you have a chamber flag and then here in
00:18:25
this little sleeve we have our owner's
00:18:27
manual so a really nice setup by psa now
00:18:31
pros and cons a price is a big one these
00:18:34
are coming in at 499 and that's what
00:18:36
they're going to be 4.99
00:18:38
so just a much cheaper price than even
00:18:41
your ruger five seven which was coming
00:18:42
in about 750. i think i paid eight
00:18:45
hundred dollars for it when it first
00:18:46
came out
00:18:48
magazines are going to be fairly easy to
00:18:50
get once they get into full production
00:18:52
and they should be at a reasonable price
00:18:53
i wish i could quote you the price but
00:18:55
typically psa will come in again very
00:18:58
reasonably it's a full featured gun you
00:19:00
have your front and rear cocking
00:19:02
serrations your pick rail the trigger is
00:19:05
excellent
00:19:06
your sights being glock compatible that
00:19:08
makes it really nice there's a lot of
00:19:10
different things you can do
00:19:12
and i like the texturing it's not too
00:19:14
harsh but yet it counts where you need
00:19:17
it 23 rounds of ammunition in the magazine
00:19:21
that is a huge plus and they could
00:19:23
possibly even make extensions as well
00:19:26
the 5.7 caliber it's excellent for a
00:19:28
self-defense caliber especially for
00:19:30
those who are recoil sensitive very
00:19:32
light recoil very little muzzle rise and
00:19:35
great for first time shooters or those
00:19:37
who don't have a lot of experience
00:19:39
of course one of the things though is a
00:19:41
con is the ammunition right now at this
00:19:44
point is really expensive i mean 49
00:19:47
dollars a box is what i'm paying for it
00:19:49
and what i've been doing is when i go
00:19:51
into psa i'll just grab a box of five
00:19:53
seven and just put it back for the
00:19:55
review
00:19:56
and i've got quite a bit in fact i've
00:19:58
got enough for the upcoming review but
00:20:00
it is expensive it is also a fairly
00:20:03
larger firearm that's no different than
00:20:05
the fn57 or the ruger 5.7 i mean they're
00:20:08
just a little bit larger pistols so this
00:20:10
would be more of a home defense type
00:20:12
firearm or you know a duty type pistol
00:20:15
they are proven militarily i mean europe
00:20:18
and these are approved by nato for
00:20:19
self-defense combat rounds so you've got
00:20:21
that going for it and there are a lot of
00:20:23
different choices of ammo out there but
00:20:26
availability is a little bit sketchy
00:20:27
right now hopefully we'll get back into
00:20:29
it as far as reliability we had one
00:20:32
malfunction and it just didn't eject the
00:20:34
round that could have possibly been ammo
00:20:37
related but other than that we didn't
00:20:39
have any problems but again we only shot
00:20:41
about 250 rounds now i'm really wanting
00:20:44
to compare this head to head at the
00:20:46
range with the ruger 5.7 maybe even the
00:20:48
fn57
00:20:50
and then also the 22 tcm by rock island
00:20:53
armory that is a great little round
00:20:55
that's really screaming coming out the
00:20:57
end of the barrel and so we're going to
00:20:59
do some testing with these to check out
00:21:01
these really high velocity performers if
00:21:03
they're good for self-defense and two if
00:21:05
it is this would be a great gun for
00:21:08
beginning shooters
00:21:09
in fact it's a great gun for beginning
00:21:11
shooters now i mean taking them back to
00:21:13
the range you know 22 is great this
00:21:15
gives you a little more power but again
00:21:17
the biggest deal is the ammo is a lot
00:21:19
more expensive especially 22 but it sure
00:21:22
is a lot of fun and we really appreciate
00:21:25
palmetto state armory for sending the
00:21:26
psa rock 57 for this review

00:22:17
so
00:22:20
[Music]
00:22:28
a little bit of the linkages right there
00:22:30
and then
00:22:32
i don't know wonder it's not caught
00:22:34
and we'll take a talk and we'll talk
00:22:36
and then i just pull back
00:22:39
and fall when it happens
00:22:41
[Music]
00:22:45
it's a neck down version of i don't have
00:22:48
the dang caliper cartridge and then
00:22:50
forward and then it comes right off the
00:22:52
slide okay let's do that again that was
00:22:54
really ugly
00:22:56
and awkward and just juicy
00:22:58
i mean that's just crazy and so i don't
00:23:00
say all that yet
