Китой (бур. Хүти гол - холодная река),с Тунгусского или Тофаларского наречия,переводится как Волчья протока или Волчья пасть. Китой начинает путь на карте в Бурятии,хотя в месте истока представляет собой лишь небольшой ручей.Проходя через возвышенности горной части,переходит границу Иркутской области и выходит на равнину, где на карте превращается в полноводный широкий водоем.Несколько десятилетий назад река использовалась в качестве основной транспортной магистрали по сплаву леса. Его отправляли на лесообрабатывающее предприятие. Вскоре сплав признали невыгодным, а также вредящим экологии. Поэтому его применение запретили, из-за чего лесопереработка на комбинате практически прекратилась. Китой питается по смешанному типу.Большую часть питания обеспечивают дождевые осадки (60%).Еще 30% поступает от подземных грунтовых вод. Оставшаяся часть – от таяния снега. Поскольку питание преимущественно дождевое,для реки характерны частые паводки в летние месяцы.Весеннее половодье длится недолго,хотя и считается достаточно бурным и стремительным.Ледостав обычно начинается в середине осени и длится в среднем 3-4 месяца.В апреле или мае лед уже сходит. Длинна Китоя 316км,в Китой впадает 2000 рек. Самый крупный населённый пункт на реке Китой - город Ангарск,это город в Восточной Сибири,с прилегающими населёнными пунктами образует Ангарский городской округ.Население города - 221296 человек.
