Description:

I never start a nail trim without kwik stop. This stuff is a lifesaver. Check out Dr. Dan's Amazon store: https://www.amazon.com/shop/dantheveterinarian **This video is for entertainment and educational purposes only. If your pet is sick, take them to see your local veterinarian for the care they need** (Disclaimer) Hey everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about broken nails or claws in dogs. A broken nail is very common. Dog's break nails for many different reasons, but when it happens a veterinarian needs to be seen to fix the broken nail or claw. When a dog breaks their nail it damages the dermis of the nail which is also called the quick. The quick has blood vessels and nerves in it, because it is soft tissue. This means a dog with a broken nail is painful and can bleed a little or lot from the broken nail. The nail can also get infected just like the skin. Because the dog's broken nail is painful, bleeding, and it can get infected, a veterinarian is needed. When a pet owner brings a dog with a broken nail to see me I do a few things to fix problems. The first thing I do (after my complete physical exam) is I give the dog a sedative. This allows the dog to completely relax as I work on the nail. As I said earlier, the nail is painful when broken, so it would not be nice to do this without sedation. The nail and fur around the nail is clipped and cleaned. A local pain medication can also be given at this point. The damage nail is trimmed from the body. An bleeding from the damage nail being removed is controlled with pressure, cautery, and/or powder for clotting. Once there is no more bleeding and the damaged nail has been remove, most veterinarians will place a bandage on the dog's foot for a short period of time. This may help will swelling, inflammation, and bleeding. Only a veterinarian should place a bandage on a dog's foot. Medications to go home may include an antibiotic if the vet is worried about a claw infection from the broken nail. Medications for pain are always prescribed, because a broken nail hurts. Please sure any experiences you may have with your dog and broken nails.
