[Music]
00:00:17
we are now in the true countryside and
00:00:19
about 120 kilometers away from andong it
00:00:21
was the start of may and almost a month
00:00:23
had passed since starting our journey in
00:00:25
mogpo on april 4th we had cycled over
00:00:27
600 kilometers with just over 500
00:00:29
kilometers left until the end of our
00:00:31
journey with no real goals along the way
00:00:32
except to enjoy and film our
00:00:34
surroundings we kept on pedaling
00:00:39
when we found that place last night we
00:00:41
saw other people camping so we thought
00:00:43
it'd be okay there were some signs that
00:00:45
said no camping but uh it's kind of hard
00:00:47
to explain but a lot of the times
00:00:49
they're more suggestions than actual
00:00:51
laws that one actually we weren't
00:00:53
supposed to camp at so we woke up with a
00:00:56
kind of a part keeper telling us to
00:00:58
clean up our tent he wasn't too angry or
00:01:00
anything just uh
00:01:02
had to get out of there so i guess uh
00:01:04
yeah probably not a good idea to camp at
00:01:06
uh kumibo there aren't as many
00:01:08
convenience stores around here we have
00:01:10
to make sure we stop at the convenience
00:01:12
stores when the timing's right
00:01:15
and don't accidentally miss them let's
00:01:17
start the bike ride for today and see
00:01:19
how it goes
00:01:29
and already
00:01:30
we got a headwind probably fourth or
00:01:32
fifth day in a row it's definitely
00:01:34
looking like the winds go from north to
00:01:36
south
00:01:37
basically throughout spring maybe it
00:01:39
would have been smarter to start in
00:01:41
seoul
00:01:42
[Music]
00:01:54
[Applause]
00:01:59
the first time we did the ford rivers
00:02:00
trail it was the end of july absolute
00:02:03
hottest time yeah eugene was getting
00:02:05
heat stroke and her body couldn't handle
00:02:07
it so that's why we had to take a taxi
00:02:09
if you're planning a bike trip to korea
00:02:11
only if you want to ride like right in
00:02:13
the very early morning like three or
00:02:16
four a.m
00:02:17
probably not a good idea to come in the
00:02:18
summer
00:02:29
[Music]
00:02:32
so if you're coming north from seoul
00:02:34
that's what it looks like don't follow
00:02:36
that red arrow just go straight through
00:02:38
those pylons
00:02:43
[Music]
00:02:45
[Applause]
00:02:46
[Music]
00:02:53
[Applause]
00:02:54
[Music]
00:03:27
foreign
00:03:29
[Music]
00:03:41
[Music]
00:03:51
[Music]
00:03:57
that place is a lot more savory than the
00:03:59
average place it looks kind of run down
00:04:02
but definitely give it a try
00:04:04
it's five thousand won for the jajangman
00:04:06
so pretty good deal i remember every
00:04:09
section
00:04:12
good luck babe
00:04:18
[Music]
00:04:32
hey values threw you one of your hardest
00:04:34
sections
00:04:35
how was it
00:04:37
huh
00:04:47
uh
00:04:52
[Music]
00:04:59
so
00:05:02
[Music]
00:05:11
i'm starting to see a lot more people
00:05:13
cycle touring in korea these days
00:05:15
basically when most people do this the
00:05:17
four rivers trail they usually just have
00:05:19
like one bag to put some clothes in and
00:05:22
they basically just hop from hotel to
00:05:24
hotel and go to the restaurants and
00:05:26
stuff there's been a few people a few
00:05:28
koreans we've seen with full-on cycle
00:05:31
tour setups it's cool to see
00:05:34
it getting more popular for sure
00:05:37
[Music]
00:05:45
probably going to talk about the wind
00:05:47
like 500 times in these videos
00:05:50
but
00:05:51
it's just not on our team this trip
00:05:53
that's for sure
00:05:56
[Music]
00:06:13
sometimes you're just riding on the path
00:06:15
and then there's a really cool
00:06:17
traditional korean
00:06:18
set of buildings so
00:06:23
the section of the four rivers trail
00:06:24
between kumi and mungyeong is definitely
00:06:26
one of the most desolate and if you're
00:06:28
going to andong then you end up stuck in
00:06:29
the countryside for about 130 kilometers
00:06:32
it's definitely not the most scenic
00:06:33
section but there are little areas in
00:06:35
the path that are really interesting and
00:06:37
beautiful in their own way we ended up
00:06:39
cycling just over 50 kilometers that day
00:06:41
to a small city called punyang this is
00:06:43
the only town nearby where the four
00:06:45
rivers trail splits off to head towards
00:06:47
andong about 65 kilometers away you can
00:06:49
literally see pollen on everything and
00:06:51
my allergies were getting unbearable so
00:06:54
we decided it was best to stay inside
00:06:56
whenever possible until they improved a
00:06:58
bit if you're kind of in the middle of
00:06:59
the countryside and you can't find a
00:07:01
motel or a hotel there's these things
00:07:04
called yoguans it's not a full-on motel
00:07:07
but the good thing is is it seems like
00:07:09
it it's not like a love motel style i
00:07:12
prefer all the way way better than
00:07:15
sketchy one oh for sure like we stand at
00:07:17
a cheap motel in daegu
00:07:20
and even though it's like newer or
00:07:22
whatever
00:07:23
there's just a lot of kind of shady
00:07:25
business going on there
00:07:26
morning
00:07:27
we're in a little place called punyang
00:07:29
right now it's just a little countryside
00:07:31
town we have about 65 kilometers until
00:07:34
andong dam
00:07:36
and that kind of marks the halfway point
00:07:38
between busan and seoul on this journey
00:07:41
so
00:07:42
that's pretty exciting there won't be
00:07:44
anything in between punyang and handle
00:07:46
so we had to kind of buy all our lunch
00:07:49
supplies and stuff like that in advance
00:07:51
and today is the first day in korea
00:07:53
where you're allowed to not wear a mask
00:07:55
outside but obviously if you're in like
00:07:58
crowded areas it's probably still a good
00:08:00
idea to do that should be a fun day
00:08:02
today is cycling eugene's just doing her
00:08:05
sunscreen right there
00:08:06
and we'll depart soon yeah but
00:08:10
you can make
00:08:17
[Music]
00:08:20
we started by making our way back to the
00:08:22
bike path this was our first time going
00:08:24
to andong so we had no idea what was in
00:08:26
store for the 65 kilometers ahead we
00:08:28
expected it to be similar to the long
00:08:30
section of the four rivers trail between
00:08:32
tegu and mungyeong which has similar
00:08:34
scenery but we are in for a nice
00:08:35
surprise
00:08:37
[Music]
00:08:40
i've been living in korea for a long
00:08:42
time so i have to kind of think of it as
00:08:46
it's my first time and kind of present
00:08:48
it that way because some things aren't
00:08:49
as interesting anymore kevin was talking
00:08:51
about like when he first came to korea
00:08:54
the the tombs you see everywhere were
00:08:56
really interesting they're all over the
00:08:58
countryside it's pretty insane how many
00:09:01
there are every kilometer you'll see at
00:09:03
least one for sure
00:09:10
[Music]
00:09:19
not even 15 kilometers into the ride the
00:09:22
scenery was already a lot more exciting
00:09:23
than the countryside we were in before
00:09:25
there was green everywhere and neat
00:09:27
wooden platforms and bridges making for
00:09:29
almost a western-like feel
00:09:32
[Music]
00:09:54
hey nice to meet you have a safe trip
00:09:57
see you again see you again
00:10:00
[Music] [Applause]
00:10:02
you never know who you'll meet on the
00:10:04
road and every time we make the effort
00:10:05
to stop and talk to somebody we make a
00:10:07
new friend and learn more about life
00:10:09
from them these spontaneous meetings are
00:10:11
always really exciting and some of the
00:10:13
most memorial moments of our trips and
00:10:15
just a little bit further down the road
00:10:17
we met someone else so in germany it's
00:10:20
really weird
00:10:21
having a flag but
00:10:23
in korea it's like ah
00:10:26
yeah
00:10:27
you're doing the four rivers trail and
00:10:28
here i'm doing before rivers trail and
00:10:31
i'm doing this extra detour for the
00:10:33
grand slam possibly to
00:10:35
yeah oh yeah maybe in two or three years
00:10:38
doing all tracks in korea oh okay
00:10:40
awesome i've been on sbs kbs and
00:10:43
whatever which channel oh
00:10:46
did a lot with that already
00:10:48
so you're looking for your parents right
00:10:52
how is it going
00:10:55
but you know i'm not that sad about it i
00:10:58
tried everything i could do yeah
00:11:01
and
00:11:02
yeah sometimes
00:11:04
you have luck sometimes not so
00:11:07
but at least i can say i tried
00:11:08
everything all the best i hope that
00:11:10
you're able to find them but when you're
00:11:12
in in korea so i have all the support
00:11:14
also from my family so ah good good
00:11:17
maybe see you later yeah yeah in in will
00:11:20
be really slow so yeah
00:11:23
i think at the moment you have
00:11:26
fair wind so
00:11:27
yeah it should be okay see you later had
00:11:29
a good ride yeah have a safe safe trip
00:11:32
yeah bye-bye bye-bye we'll see you in
00:11:34
ando
00:11:36
tim treated us to an amazing dinner
00:11:37
afterwards and he was one of the most
00:11:39
interesting and kind people we've ever
00:11:41
met a person who is truly trying to make
00:11:43
the world a better place with so much
00:11:45
experience and knowledge we'd love to
00:11:46
meet up again in seoul someday and wish
00:11:48
him all the best with his search and
00:11:50
future endeavors
00:11:53
[Music]
00:12:02
a lot of the signs written on the trail
00:12:05
for how much distance is left
00:12:07
are all over the place they're all
00:12:09
different from each other definitely
00:12:11
don't believe what you see on the signs
00:12:13
look at your gps on your phone that's
00:12:15
the most accurate way to know how far
00:12:17
you have left
00:12:21
[Music]
00:12:27
we ended up passing the unesco heritage
00:12:29
huawei village but we decided to save it
00:12:31
for another trip when we returned to
00:12:33
cover andong with more energy to enjoy
00:12:35
it to the fullest if you don't have that
00:12:37
luxury it's probably a really good idea
00:12:39
to check it out on the way as there
00:12:40
aren't a lot of opportunities on the
00:12:42
bike pass to see something like this
00:12:47
[Music]
00:12:52
we're going slow good luck
00:12:54
[Music]
00:13:08
we were really enjoying the beautiful
00:13:10
sky and the scenic countryside views but
00:13:12
it was time to tackle a couple of
00:13:13
decently sized hills before heading into
00:13:15
ando i've never seen scenery like this
00:13:18
anywhere except jeju so this is pretty
00:13:20
unique beautiful
00:13:22
[Music]
00:13:25
[Applause]
00:13:29
you're doing great toby
00:13:34
oh thank you nice little downhill it's
00:13:37
beautiful over here though
00:13:43
[Music]
00:13:49
all right it's about 4 p.m we've gone 50
00:13:52
kilometers and we just got the one last
00:13:54
hill and 14 kilometers left until the
00:13:57
andong dam which is the stamp i think
00:14:01
the second hill was a lot higher and
00:14:02
steeper than the first and we had to
00:14:04
push our bikes to the top
00:14:06
good job
00:14:11
[Music]
00:14:22
we finally made it to andong at about 5
00:14:24
p.m and we could immediately tell that
00:14:26
it was unique from other cities in korea
00:14:28
but we still had to get the stamp to
00:14:29
finish our day and as always the win
00:14:31
picked up again to make for a difficult
00:14:33
finish
00:14:41
[Music]
00:14:43
[Applause]
00:14:49
i'm ready to
00:14:50
fill up my ocd here
00:14:53
this heat
00:14:56
and
00:14:58
[Applause]
00:15:02
[Music]
00:15:10
guys nice to meet you toby have a good
00:15:12
one bye-bye bye-bye
00:15:15
yeah it was just a cool day meeting all
00:15:17
these really nice people it's raining
00:15:19
now so we're gonna hit up a motel and uh
00:15:22
we'll check out andong tomorrow
00:15:25
good job babe
00:15:28
[Music]
00:15:38
we're in andong now we've found out a
00:15:40
lot of the things here the like tourist
00:15:42
sites are actually pretty far away from
00:15:44
the city on this trip we're pretty tired
00:15:47
so today's kind of a rest day i don't
00:15:49
think we're gonna like travel way like
00:15:52
an hour away by bus or anything but in
00:15:54
general the city's been pretty nice so
00:15:56
far so
00:15:57
let's go check it out
00:16:02
all these places always like brag that
00:16:05
they've been on tv too so
00:16:09
[Music]
00:16:33
so to be honest i'm not a big fish eater
00:16:37
i am allergic to salmon so i avoid fish
00:16:40
normally
00:16:42
and
00:16:43
this is kind of experimental for me so
00:16:46
we'll see how this is
00:16:52
pretty salty and savory
00:16:54
but not too like fishy if you know what
00:16:57
i mean
00:17:14
it was actually pretty good it's not
00:17:15
something i would eat like every day
00:17:18
but
00:17:19
it got better the more i ate like as
00:17:22
soon as i adjusted to the flavor and
00:17:24
stuff like that do you have a good meal
00:17:26
yeah i
00:17:27
i really enjoyed it
00:17:29
andong is really famous for soju and
00:17:32
they have their own traditional soju
00:17:34
here that's a lot stronger than regular
00:17:36
soju regular soju is about 17
00:17:39
and undone soju can be up to 50 percent
00:17:52
[Music]
00:18:06
[Music]
00:18:16
[Music]
00:18:27
the next day we cycled 65 kilometers
00:18:29
back to the sungpoon bridge we are only
00:18:31
55 kilometers from the peak of iwaryang
00:18:34
the tallest mountain on the four rivers
00:18:36
trail but that's for another story
00:18:41
[Music]
00:18:48
you

Description:

Hello everyone! In this episode we head north from Gumi-bo through more countryside. This is the most desolate area on the Four Rivers Trail, but we got lucky and met a few amazing people along the way. There's nothing like meeting people in the middle of nowhere! We also depart from the Four Rivers Trail a little bit and head over to Andong, one of Korea's treasures with a lot of traditional culture. We try some local cuisine and even traditional Soju, which is almost three times as strong as regular soju. Enjoy!
