00:00:00
hi everyone kevin here today i want to
00:00:03
show you how you can use a windows
00:00:05
sandbox unfortunately we're not going to
00:00:08
be building any sand castles today but
00:00:10
we are going to be doing something
00:00:11
that's pretty useful have you ever
00:00:13
received a file or maybe you wanted to
00:00:15
install an application but you don't
00:00:18
quite trust it with windows sandbox you
00:00:21
can install that app or you could open
00:00:22
that file on a completely separate
00:00:24
computer
00:00:26
instead of being a separate physical
00:00:28
computer it's a separate virtual
00:00:30
computer once you're all done with it
00:00:31
you can close it and whatever you did on
00:00:33
it is completely gone once you open up
00:00:36
windows sandbox again you have a
00:00:38
completely new and fresh install of
00:00:40
windows 10. now there are two caveats
00:00:43
before we jump into it to be able to do
00:00:45
this you need windows 10 professional or
00:00:48
enterprise and also there are some
00:00:50
system requirements but i took a quick
00:00:52
glance at them and as long as you have a
00:00:54
somewhat recent computer you'll likely
00:00:56
qualify all right well why don't we jump
00:00:58
on the pc and let's look at how we can
00:00:59
create our very own windows sandbox once
00:01:02
again to be able to use windows sandbox
00:01:04
you need either windows 10 professional
00:01:06
or enterprise if you don't know what you
00:01:09
have it's very easy to find out simply
00:01:11
go down to your taskbar in the search
00:01:13
field and here let's type in system
00:01:15
information once you type in system
00:01:17
information you'll see the best match
00:01:19
for system information let's click on
00:01:21
this this opens up system information
00:01:24
and under system summary over here you
00:01:26
can see your os name if you have windows
00:01:29
10 home unfortunately you can't use the
00:01:31
sandbox if you're interested in
00:01:33
upgrading from windows 10 home to
00:01:35
professional it's extremely easy to do
00:01:38
simply go down to your taskbar and
00:01:39
within the search field type in
00:01:41
activation settings here we see the best
00:01:44
match option let's click on this this
00:01:46
opens up the activation screen and with
00:01:48
windows 10 home you'll see an option
00:01:50
that takes you to the windows store to
00:01:52
upgrade it's 99 to upgrade from home to
00:01:56
professional now you might be thinking
00:01:57
is it worth doing that do i just get the
00:01:59
sandbox well you get this sandbox but
00:02:01
you also get several other features for
00:02:04
example you get remote desktop which
00:02:05
allows you to control other pcs you
00:02:08
could also encrypt your hard drive using
00:02:10
bitlocker and you can also set up more
00:02:12
advanced virtual machines using hyper-v
00:02:14
so you really get a lot more power user
00:02:17
type features okay with all of that out
00:02:19
of the way let's say that you have
00:02:21
windows 10 professional or enterprise
00:02:23
and you want to start using the sandbox
00:02:25
unfortunately we have to do a few things
00:02:27
before we can start using it it's not
00:02:29
turned on by default to turn it on once
00:02:31
again let's go down to the taskbar and
00:02:34
here this time let's type in turn
00:02:35
windows features on and off here you'll
00:02:38
see the best match option let's click on
00:02:40
this this opens up a prompt with a ton
00:02:43
of windows features some of them are
00:02:45
turned on and some of them are turned
00:02:46
off the ones with a check mark are
00:02:48
currently turned on if we scroll pretty
00:02:51
much all the way down this list you'll
00:02:53
see an option for windows sandbox let's
00:02:55
make sure that this is checked on and
00:02:57
then let's click on ok if this is your
00:02:59
first time doing it you'll likely also
00:03:01
have to restart your computer now that
00:03:03
we have windows sandbox enabled it's
00:03:06
time to start using it right here on my
00:03:08
desktop i have a file from adele vance
00:03:11
she's a recently departed employee at
00:03:13
the kevin cookie company and she didn't
00:03:16
exactly leave on the best of terms she
00:03:18
sent me a file called outstanding
00:03:20
customer orders if it turns out there
00:03:22
are orders in here well i need to know
00:03:24
about it because we need to start
00:03:25
fulfilling them right away but here if i
00:03:28
hover over the file you'll see that it's
00:03:30
a vb script file i do not trust opening
00:03:33
that on my computer let's try opening
00:03:35
that in the windows sandbox and if it
00:03:37
turns out it's malicious i'll just close
00:03:39
it to launch the windows sandbox once
00:03:41
again and yes i feel like i've been
00:03:43
saying this a lot today let's go down to
00:03:45
the taskbar in the search field and here
00:03:47
let's type in windows sandbox here again
00:03:50
you'll see the best match let's click on
00:03:52
this check that out this now opens up
00:03:54
our very own virtual machine or
00:03:57
basically a sandbox when i click on the
00:03:59
start menu you'll see that it only has
00:04:02
the default apps installed i haven't yet
00:04:04
included any applications here if i
00:04:06
click on file explorer if i click into
00:04:09
downloads or documents or pictures
00:04:11
you'll see here too i haven't added any
00:04:13
files yet in a sense this is a
00:04:15
completely fresh install of windows 10.
00:04:18
now once again i want to see what's
00:04:20
contained within this file that adele
00:04:22
sent me i can move files back and forth
00:04:25
between the sandbox here i'll click on
00:04:27
the outstanding customer orders file and
00:04:29
i can press ctrl c to copy next when i
00:04:32
click in my sandbox i can press control
00:04:34
v to paste and here you see that it
00:04:36
moved the file over now i could run the
00:04:38
file and anything that happens will be
00:04:40
isolated to this window let's go ahead
00:04:43
and click on the file and see are there
00:04:45
orders or is it something more malicious
00:04:47
than that here if i click on the file oh
00:04:49
check that out you got pwned i now own
00:04:52
your machine
00:04:54
no cookies for you typical management at
00:04:56
the kevin cookie company clueless about
00:04:59
technology little does adele know that i
00:05:01
was using a virtual machine let's click
00:05:04
on ok here i don't know what else the
00:05:06
script did to my computer but it's
00:05:08
probably safer if i just close this
00:05:09
virtual machine right up here i'll click
00:05:11
on the x to close it out when i click on
00:05:13
the x i get a message from windows
00:05:15
sandbox telling me that once i close it
00:05:17
everything contained within will be
00:05:19
discarded and permanently lost well
00:05:21
that's a good thing i don't want this
00:05:23
file polluting my computer so let's
00:05:25
click on ok whew i really think i dodged
00:05:28
a bullet there down below on the taskbar
00:05:30
once again let's type in windows sandbox
00:05:33
here again let's launch the windows
00:05:34
sandbox this once again launches the
00:05:37
windows sandbox and here now you'll see
00:05:39
that that file that i copied over no
00:05:41
longer exists this is once again a
00:05:44
completely fresh install of windows 10.
00:05:47
so i can install apps i can load in
00:05:49
files and as soon as i close it all that
00:05:52
disappears and once i reopen it i'm
00:05:54
right back to square one now that i
00:05:56
tested that file the one thing that
00:05:58
adele had right is management at the kcc
00:06:00
is pretty clueless about technology and
00:06:02
before someone else is tempted to run
00:06:04
this file i should probably go up to it
00:06:06
and just delete it off my computer just
00:06:08
to be safe alright if you now know how
00:06:11
to build your very own windows sandbox

Description:

In this step-by-step tutorial, learn how to use Windows 10 Sandbox. Windows Sandbox provides a lightweight desktop environment to safely run applications in isolation. Software installed inside the Windows Sandbox environment remains "sandboxed" and runs separately from the host machine. A sandbox is temporary. When it's closed, all the software and files and the state are deleted. You get a brand-new instance of the sandbox every time you open the application. Software and applications installed on the host aren't directly available in the sandbox. If you need specific applications available inside the Windows Sandbox environment, they must be explicitly installed within the environment. Windows Sandbox has the following properties: - Part of Windows: Everything required for this feature is included in Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. There's no need to download a VHD. - Pristine: Every time Windows Sandbox runs, it's as clean as a brand-new installation of Windows. - Disposable: Nothing persists on the device. Everything is discarded when the user closes the application. - Secure: Uses hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation. It relies on the Microsoft hypervisor to run a separate kernel that isolates Windows Sandbox from the host. - Efficient: Uses the integrated kernel scheduler, smart memory management, and virtual GPU. Prerequisites - Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education build 18305 or later (Windows Sandbox is currently not supported on Home SKUs) - AMD64 architecture - Virtualization capabilities enabled in BIOS - At least 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended) - At least 1 GB of free disk space (SSD recommended) - At least two CPU cores (four cores with hyperthreading recommended) Installation - Ensure that your machine is using Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, build version 18305 or later. Usage - Copy an executable file (and any other files needed to run the application) from the host and paste them into the Windows Sandbox window. - Run the executable file or installer inside the sandbox. - When you're finished experimenting, close the sandbox. A dialog box will state that all sandbox content will be discarded and permanently deleted. - Select ok. - Confirm that your host machine doesn't exhibit any of the modifications that you made in Windows Sandbox. ⌚ Timestamps 0:00 Introduction 1:02 Check Windows version 1:32 Upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro 2:18 Turn Sandbox feature on 3:02 Use Windows Sandbox 6:08 Wrap up 📃 Watch related playlists and videos - Playlist with all my Windows videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlKpQrBME6xJJOa5N8PEZgcxzfUas6tT8 🚩 Connect with me on social: - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinstratvert/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/kevstrat - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser 🔔 Subscribe to my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/kevlers?sub_confirmation=1 🎬 Want to watch again?
