00:00:00
Exploring other planets is one of mankind's most cherished dreams.
00:00:05
At the very beginning of the space era enthusiasts were certain
00:00:10
that in the 21st century our closest planets in the Solar System would be thoroughly explored.
00:00:16
In reality, however, things proved to be much more complicated than expected,
00:00:19
and so far apart from the Moon no human has set foot on the surface of any celestial body other than the Earth, of course.
00:00:25
Many believe that manned flights will not pay, others doubt if they will be in demand.
00:00:32
Still, there is a good chance of visiting other worlds.
00:00:36
And it's closer than may seem at first glance.
00:00:43
KOSMO
00:00:46
The first in Outer space
00:00:49
The American company SpaceX is one of those who are essentially the tip of the spear in space exploration.
00:00:55
This private commercial organization was founded by Elon Musk back in 2002.
00:01:01
6 years after its foundation and after a lot of research and a number of failed experiments,
00:01:08
the Falcon 1 launch vehicle developed by SpaceX engineers successfully went into our Earth's orbit for the first time.
00:01:16
This was proof that space exploration doesn't have to be in the sole domain of the state.
00:01:23
In the 12 years since its first groundbreaking success, SpaceX accomplished over a hundred of successful launches
00:01:30
and also delivered tens of thousands of kilos of useful cargo both to the ISS from the Earth and the other way around in total.
00:01:35
In addition, since 2020 the reusable spacecraft Crew Dragon has been on 2 successful flights
00:01:44
to the International Space Station carrying astronauts on board.
00:01:49
It goes without saying that the SpaceX company is advancing by leaps and bounds.
00:01:54
One may debate the reasons of its dazzling success till the cows come home,
00:01:57
but this is rather pointless and unduly disrespectful.
00:02:00
Let's better direct our gaze ahead into the future and envisage what fantastic achievements
00:02:07
we may be looking to witness as soon as in the nearest decades.
00:02:10
SpaceX is currently working on three main tasks in space exploration.
00:02:17
First and foremost, it is an international project of a manned flight to the Moon known as Artemis
00:02:23
which they are working on in collaboration with NASA, the ESA, Canada, Japan and a number of other countries.
00:02:30
Also work is underway on the global satellite internet constellation Starlink
00:02:35
that provides high-speed satellite internet access.
00:02:37
Last but not least, a manned mission to Mars is currently in the pipeline.
00:02:41
The programme Artemis aimed at exploring the Moon, was announced by the US government in 2017.
00:02:49
It is suggested that the project is broken down to at least 3 stages,
00:02:53
with the start of the first one planned for the end of 2021.
00:02:56
It involves orbiting the Earth’s natural satellite using an unmanned spacecraft with its subsequent return to the Earth.
00:03:04
At the second stage a crew of 4 astronauts is supposed to orbit the Moon without landing on it.
00:03:11
At the third stage, planned for 2024, four astronauts are supposed to land on the surface of our Earth's satellite.
00:03:20
The upcoming mission to the Moon may be seen as a practice run and the first step to a manned flight to Mars.
00:03:26
Within the framework of the Artemis project, the Super Heavy rocket booster
00:03:33
and the SpaceX Starship will be tested in real conditions.
00:03:37
Moreover, a space station is planned to be created in the Moon’s orbit,
00:03:42
which may become a stopover platform for travellers bound for the Red Planet.
00:03:47
In the next twelve months SpaceX will have to launch its spaceship to high- and low-altitude orbits in order
00:03:55
to see how to adjust its construction to perfection.
00:03:58
These flights will include scheduled cargo delivery flights to the International Space Station,
00:04:02
as well as launching communication satellites into the Earth’s orbit.
00:04:06
Eventually Starship is supposed to supersede the currently used Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets.
00:04:13
The new generation spacecraft will be able to boost up to 100 tonnes of payload into orbit within the course of one flight only.
00:04:20
At the same time the cost of one kilo of cargo is supposed to be at an all-time low.
00:04:26
Mars is at its closest point to the Earth once every two years.
00:04:32
Obviously it makes sense to take advantage of this position of the planets,
00:04:36
as it is the best and most convenient for travelling from one to the other.
00:04:39
The next time the planets will be at their closest point in the summer 2022.
00:04:44
This is when two unmanned cargo spaceships are scheduled to be launched on their way to the Red Planet.
00:04:49
It will take them from several months to one year to reach their destination.
00:04:53
Their mission will be to deliver around 100 tonnes of cargo to the surface of Mars –
00:04:57
power-supply facilities, mining equipment, automated machinery and a lot more.
00:05:04
The main objective at this stage will be to reconnoitre the ground, to search for water ice
00:05:09
and to take care of infrastructure for future colonists.
00:05:13
Remotely operable machinery will lay the groundwork for safe landings of future crewed missions:
00:05:20
for example, it will need to clean the area from rocks, which are potentially hazardous, and to carry out geological prospecting,
00:05:25
particularly focusing on finding water ice, which is vital for future colonists' survival
00:05:30
and generally for developing a settlement.
00:05:32
Water isn’t only a substance vital for any biological life forms,
00:05:37
but it’s also indispensable in the electrolytic reaction that produces oxygen and hydrogen as it runs its course.
00:05:44
The former is needed for breathing and for burning fuel,
00:05:47
and the latter may be transformed into methane when coupled with CO2.
00:05:51
Methane will be used as rocket fuel.
00:05:55
The following stage of Mars colonization is scheduled for 2024.
00:06:01
This is the next time Mars will be the shortest distance away from the Earth – to be more exact, approximately 57 mln km.
00:06:08
All in all 4 launches are planned – two cargo flights and two manned flights.
00:06:14
The spacecraft will travel for several months and reach their destination in 2025.
00:06:21
Shortly after they get some distance away from the Earth, it will be impossible to catch up with them,
00:06:25
so in case of unforeseen developments they will be left to their own devices with no assistance from the Earth to count on.
00:06:33
Spending several months on a flight in interplanetary space is quite a tough ordeal.
00:06:39
There are many important and complex tasks the constructors of the crewed spaceships will have to handle.
00:06:44
Not only will the available room have to be used as efficiently as possible,
00:06:49
but will also have to provide conditions good enough for the journey to be comfortable and safe.
00:06:53
The expected number of the crew is several dozen people.
00:06:58
They will have both private quarters and common areas, as well as gyms
00:07:04
to help prevent unwanted changes in their organisms that a long stay in a weightless environment may cause.
00:07:11
In addition, a large portion of the payload bay of the ship will be occupied by storage rooms, various equipment
00:07:18
and life support systems.
00:07:21
Protection from radiation is a crucial point in interplanetary travel.
00:07:26
As the rocket will be pointed in the direction opposite from the Sun for most of the journey,
00:07:31
the living quarters are planned to be located in its front part.
00:07:34
Thus the storage rooms and other sections not intended for the crew to stay in permanently will be taking the brunt,
00:07:40
absorbing most of the harmful solar radiation and so shielding the travellers from it.
00:07:47
The main goal for the Red Planet colonists will be to build up a Martian base
00:07:53
with adequate conditions where humans can stay for prolonged periods.
00:07:56
That includes creating favourable conditions for growing plants and deploying machinery and equipment for producing oxygen
00:08:01
and rocket fuel.
00:08:03
Even though it may sound rather fanciful,
00:08:05
Elon Musk claims to create a fully-fledged Martian colony by the end of next decade at the latest.
00:08:12
This colony should be able not only to remain autonomous for prolonged periods, but also successfully develop.
00:08:19
However, the settlement on an alien planet may encounter unforeseen problems and suffer from their dire consequences.
00:08:24
The project Biosphere 2 is an example that illustrates just that.
00:08:28
Within the framework of this project a balanced biological system was supposed to be sustained under a sealed dome.
00:08:35
The experiment showed that creating an isolated ecosystem is an elaborate process fraught with unforeseen pitfalls.
00:08:44
The long and the short of it is that The performance of the ecosystem used in the project wasn’t up to the mark.
00:08:49
As a result, the system wasn’t able to provide the potential settlers with either oxygen or sufficient amounts of food.
00:08:56
Another danger to be reckoned with is cosmic radiation.
00:09:00
Mars is devoid of a magnetic field which would protect its surface from cosmic rays,
00:09:05
that is why radiation protection should be high on the list of priorities when constructing the base.
00:09:10
Even so, there still remains a perceptible threat the Mars explorers are exposed to.
00:09:14
Cosmic radiation may cause intoxication and general weakening of the settlers’ organisms,
00:09:19
as well as raise the risk of getting infected and developing tumours.
00:09:24
Another challenge that should be taken into account is psychological compatibility,
00:09:27
or rather incompatibility, of the colonists.
00:09:30
Conflicts are to be expected in an isolated community, which is a well-known phenomenon.
00:09:36
In Psychology it is referred to as cabin fever or confined environment psychology,
00:09:39
which is manifested in hyperirritability of the members of an isolated group.
00:09:44
Tempers become frayed for no apparent reason, and consequences may be grave,
00:09:49
with the parties fighting it out and even sustaining physical injuries.
00:09:52
Let’s hope that ways will be found to handle this unpleasant phenomenon.
00:09:58
It is quite probable that first colonists will never have a chance of getting back to their native planet.
00:10:03
Disconcertingly, Martian colonization is also likely to involve human casualties.
00:10:09
Still, Elon Musk has made a pledge to develop the first Martian settlement into a real city by 2050.
00:10:17
This should be facilitated by the development of an interplanetary transportation system,
00:10:21
which is something SpaceX claims to have in the pipeline as well.
00:10:24
Time will show whether it will work out or not.
00:10:29
Of course, today talks about a Martian city have an air of science fiction about them.
00:10:36
But come to think of it, just 100 or even 50 years ago talks of many things we are now familiar
00:10:41
with would appear to be flights of fancy.
00:10:44
Mankind is constantly forging ahead
00:10:45
and new research results and discoveries are announced by the scientific community every day.
00:10:50
That is why the chance to travel to Mars is real – if not for us, then for our descendants.
00:10:57
But of course it’s up to every individual to believe how big this chance is.
00:11:00
Let’s keep in touch!
