00:00:00
hey guys good morning i'm getting ready
00:00:01
to harvest some potatoes today so i
00:00:03
planted yukon golds in this three by six
00:00:05
raised bed out here in my garden about
00:00:07
the beginning to mid part of april
00:00:09
and i'm really excited to see what's
00:00:10
going on underneath the soil because
00:00:12
that's where potatoes form their tubers
00:00:13
so first of all if you know what variety
00:00:15
of potato you planted you could easily
00:00:17
find how many days it takes for them to
00:00:18
mature most of the time it'll either say
00:00:20
on the seed packet
00:00:22
or you can ask somebody at your local
00:00:23
garden center or do a quick google
00:00:24
search i know that yukon gold's mature
00:00:27
in about a hundred days and it's we're
00:00:28
right at about 100 days maybe a couple
00:00:30
days shy but there are a couple other
00:00:32
ways you can tell the second way
00:00:35
is after they form blooms so when the
00:00:37
plants start to form blooms you know
00:00:38
that they're forming tubers underneath
00:00:40
the ground and that's when you can
00:00:41
actually start to harvest potatoes a lot
00:00:43
of people will kind of reach into the
00:00:44
top layer of soil and will pull out
00:00:46
little potatoes just here and there as
00:00:47
they want for dinner
00:00:48
you can harvest them all up at that
00:00:50
point if you want to
00:00:52
but a lot of people like to leave them
00:00:53
for anywhere from two to four weeks
00:00:55
after bloom time because it gives them
00:00:57
that much more time to form bigger
00:00:59
tubers and maybe even form a few more
00:01:00
small tubers and these plants bloomed
00:01:03
about three weeks two and a half three
00:01:05
weeks ago
00:01:06
so i know that they're getting pretty
00:01:08
close and the third way to tell is when
00:01:10
the plants start to fall over and start
00:01:11
to brown and yellow and look pretty bad
00:01:14
now it is kind of shaded in this area
00:01:16
when it's really sunny you can tell a
00:01:17
little bit more how these plants look
00:01:19
but they are starting
00:01:20
to show some signs of just their wearing
00:01:23
out i could technically leave these in the
00:01:25
ground a little bit longer if i wanted
00:01:27
to but like i said i do want to get these
00:01:30
cleared out so i have time enough in the
00:01:32
season to get another crop of something
00:01:33
planted in this space so the way i
00:01:35
harvest these is just carefully you want
00:01:37
to use probably a garden fork is the
00:01:39
best way because it's less of a chance
00:01:41
of nicking potatoes and damaging them
00:01:44
we want as many as possible to come out
00:01:46
intact so that they store longer the
00:01:48
ones any of them that we pierce are
00:01:49
accidentally damaged we need to eat
00:01:51
right away because they won't store um
00:01:53
so first of all i'm just gonna kind of
00:01:55
get into the side of this bed i'm gonna
00:01:56
put my gloves on first
00:01:58
so i'm gonna just get into the side of
00:01:59
this bed with my garden fork and just
00:02:01
start kind of working the soil up like
00:02:03
this
00:02:04
and you can already see like look at
00:02:06
right there
00:02:07
oh my word
00:02:10
look at the size of this potato
00:02:12
oh my goodness and then this is the
00:02:14
other one that was just laying kind of
00:02:15
almost on the surface
00:02:17
okay if this is what i'm gonna find this
00:02:20
is exciting i've got a tub right in
00:02:22
front of me let me pull it forward a bit
00:02:25
so i've just got a tub here with a
00:02:26
burlap stack on the bottom i'm going to
00:02:28
lay these out right here now another
00:02:30
thing i didn't mention is it's a good
00:02:32
idea when you know you're going to
00:02:33
harvest your potatoes to pull the water
00:02:35
maybe even a couple days before you're
00:02:37
ready to harvest that way
00:02:39
the soil around them is dry but it's not
00:02:41
necessary to do that i didn't these got
00:02:43
watered last night so that they are
00:02:45
going to look a little bit moist
00:02:47
but it's okay we can give them a quick
00:02:48
rinse right as soon as we're done
00:02:50
harvesting them all to clean them up
00:02:57
a whole bunch of them right here
00:03:00
handful
00:03:01
so this is interesting you guys if you
00:03:03
saw our first video on how to plant
00:03:04
potatoes you may have learned that you
00:03:06
can cut your seed potatoes in pieces as
00:03:09
long as each one has a good eye or two
00:03:11
to grow from
00:03:13
so that's how you plant them is just by
00:03:14
from pieces of potato and you can see it
00:03:16
right there very clearly and the potato
00:03:18
grew from the eye up that way and then
00:03:21
formed roots down this way and that's
00:03:22
where it's forming its potatoes is down
00:03:24
here so i'm just going to go ahead and
00:03:26
harvest this whole bed and then i'll
00:03:28
show you what we've got and maybe even
00:03:29
we'll try to get a weight to see how
00:03:30
many pounds a three by six area produce
00:03:33
look at that
00:03:36
and then look at that
00:03:41
whoa look look at that
00:03:43
did you see that
00:03:46
whoa
00:03:50
that one plant produced one two three
00:03:52
four five
00:03:53
six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve
00:03:55
fifteen fourteen fifty seven eighteen
00:03:57
potatoes off of one plant that's
00:03:59
counting the little ones
00:04:01
awesome
00:04:04
hey bud
00:04:10
all right so i've got them all laid out
00:04:11
and i'm really happy with what i got out
00:04:13
of that bed this year
00:04:14
and like i said i could have left those
00:04:16
plants in and let more of the tubers
00:04:17
mature and actually they may have formed
00:04:19
a few more tubers along the way um you
00:04:22
know but i got some really good big size
00:04:24
tubers here what you could do is if you
00:04:27
didn't need that space for anything else
00:04:29
the space in your garden you could dig
00:04:31
up a test hill or a test plant and see
00:04:32
what's going on underneath the soil
00:04:34
you can harvest out anything that looks
00:04:36
big and nice or anything that you want
00:04:38
to eat at that time then you can replant
00:04:40
the plant and water it in really well
00:04:42
and let the other tubers start to mature
00:04:44
and form larger so you know i could have
00:04:46
left these size of potatoes attached to
00:04:48
the roots of the plant and then
00:04:49
replanted watered and then these would
00:04:51
have grown a little bit bigger but like
00:04:53
i said i did want room to plant another
00:04:54
crop in that space
00:04:56
the other thing is if you are planting
00:04:58
potatoes a little bit later in the
00:04:59
season than i did or if you've got
00:05:01
potatoes that are a longer maturity day
00:05:03
so they need to stay in the ground
00:05:04
longer potatoes can actually take a
00:05:06
light frost and you can wait until the
00:05:08
potato plant is completely died back
00:05:10
before you harvest that's totally fine
00:05:11
as well when you get your potatoes up
00:05:13
out of the ground you'll notice that
00:05:16
if their skin is nice and firm and it
00:05:18
doesn't like rub off like that that
00:05:20
means that they're like perfect for
00:05:22
storage
00:05:23
i did see a few potatoes let's see like
00:05:25
this one right here see how that skin
00:05:27
wants to just rub off
00:05:29
that means that they're a little bit too
00:05:30
new is what they're called they're they
00:05:32
haven't had time to
00:05:34
get old or mature
00:05:36
their skin hasn't had a chance to really
00:05:38
firm up so these are ones i'm going to
00:05:40
want to use pretty quick in the kitchen
00:05:42
but you know what we'll burn through
00:05:44
these potatoes pretty quick so
00:05:46
i will start utilizing those right away
00:05:48
so what i'm going to do now is i'm going
00:05:50
to let them set out in a kind of dark
00:05:52
place i'm going to move these to the
00:05:53
barn just looking just like this and i'm
00:05:55
going to let them cure for a week or two
00:05:57
so that means just let them sit out let
00:05:59
them dry
00:06:00
and then i will scrape like rub the dirt
00:06:02
off really gently
00:06:03
i did say earlier that you could give
00:06:05
them a quick rinse which is fine it's
00:06:07
probably better to leave the dirt
00:06:08
attached let them cure and then clean
00:06:10
the dirt off so that you don't introduce
00:06:11
any moisture in which can make them rot
00:06:13
if they don't dry out properly but if
00:06:16
you want to rinse them to rinse them
00:06:17
clean and get that dirt off you can do
00:06:19
that but just make sure you've got them
00:06:21
stored in a super well ventilated area
00:06:23
to dry
00:06:25
and that they have dried completely
00:06:27
before trying to store them so just real
00:06:29
quick i'm not planning on storing these
00:06:30
for very long but if you are planning to
00:06:32
store your potatoes you want to put them
00:06:34
in a spot that's dark well ventilated
00:06:37
that's right around like between 40 and
00:06:39
55 degrees and i know that's really hard
00:06:41
to find in fact like we usually try to
00:06:44
store most of our stuff in our basement
00:06:45
and it doesn't get that cold down there
00:06:48
so if you have a root cellar or
00:06:50
something like that it's ideal
00:06:52
but not a lot of us have that so just
00:06:53
put them in a paper bag or a burlap sack
00:06:55
something like that and it will help
00:06:57
them store longer the refrigerator is
00:06:59
too cold what will happen if you put
00:07:01
them in the fridge is that they will
00:07:02
actually start to sweeten and the sugars
00:07:04
will start to develop
00:07:06
and it makes them rot a lot faster and
00:07:07
it makes them turn brown when you fry
00:07:09
them or cook them so we don't want that
00:07:11
so anyway i'm really happy with this
00:07:14
super super excited and i hope that this
00:07:15
video was helpful for you guys if you
00:07:17
are newbies to growing potatoes
00:07:19
and i'm hoping for even better luck and
00:07:21
success next year every year we get
00:07:23
better right so thank you guys so much
00:07:25
for watching this video and we will see
00:07:26
you in the next one bye
