It All Started From The Reserve ration
00:00:13
it's what eventually turned into the SE
00:00:15
ration or US Army Field ration C into
00:00:18
the variations of the SE ration up until
00:00:21
1980 and then there was the US Army
00:00:23
emergency ration this thing has
00:00:26
1,492 calories it weighs 15 .4 Oz or 436
00:00:33
G this is the reserve ration that weighs
00:00:37
2 and 34 lb it has
00:00:41
3,349 calories and the average Soldier
00:00:44
was carrying two of these around in his
00:00:47
hav sack all the time that's 5/2 lb
00:00:50
that's quite a bit of weight it's also a
00:00:52
lot of calories that's a good amount of
00:00:54
food back in
00:00:56
1897 May of 1897 the first calorie out
00:01:00
of Fort Sil Oklahoma tested the first
00:01:03
Reserve ration back then the hard bread
00:01:07
they were just in paper cardboard boxes
00:01:10
and you know rain would make them you
00:01:12
know turn to Mush gas attacks and rats
00:01:16
and bugs and whatnot and just getting
00:01:18
trampled on you know that just isn't
00:01:21
going to cut it for World War I
00:01:22
conditions so they were tend primarily
00:01:24
to protect against gas attacks the hav
00:01:28
sack ration this was your original
00:01:31
nomenclature this one's a reproduction
00:01:33
I've only ever seen one in existence a
00:01:35
real
00:01:36
one this instead of being like a wax
00:01:39
dipped box that can get squashed and you
00:01:42
know not super easy to produce actually
00:01:45
you know Mass produce instead they would
00:01:47
just have large portions of coffee sugar
00:01:50
and salt and then a lot them for the
00:01:53
soldier to store in their condiment can
00:01:56
so this would be one day's worth of food
00:02:04
no
00:02:28
his
00:02:34
doesn't smell bad actually smells like
00:02:37
nothing which is great this pretty
00:02:40
broken up hard tack that's what it is
00:02:43
flour and water no shortening hard
00:02:47
attack I mean from the smell of it there
00:02:49
is zero rancidity that's looking pretty
00:02:53
good let's get the sat on treay nice
00:02:56
okay so let's first start off by getting
00:02:58
this
00:03:00
out on the
00:03:12
tray okay I hate to have that brake like
00:03:15
that but it's about the only
00:03:28
way yeah
00:03:30
this is happening there we go that's a
00:03:34
really cool piece I actually like that
00:03:38
more like that that's way better plus
00:03:41
now I can actually get these out yeah
00:03:43
there we go too cool this was stored to
00:03:47
last indefinitely I mean I can easily
00:03:51
say I mean just from the some of these
00:03:53
had paper on the inside of them you know
00:03:56
like they were wrapped in a brown paper
00:03:58
this one's not
00:04:00
this was any kind of like wet component
00:04:04
like anything with moisture that would
00:04:06
be a
00:04:11
nogo let's give it the
00:04:13
old
00:04:15
Shake
00:04:19
oh see that first
00:04:21
one last one came out easy here we
00:04:28
go
00:04:33
you know this is a great piece to just
00:04:35
that one I feel like eating that's a
00:04:37
nice looking one it's like kind of burnt
00:04:39
that's
00:04:40
awesome yeah like you could have a cool
00:04:43
right up under one of these and say this
00:04:44
is hard tack from World War I you know
00:04:47
it's it's a great wow look at that one
00:04:49
down at the bottom that's got some
00:04:52
real weird honeycomb sort of imprint of
00:04:57
where it was at when it baked
00:05:01
for this one and then this one oh
00:05:09
yeah so let's make some
00:05:14
coffee look at that freshly ground
00:05:18
beans this is your like real standard bu
00:05:22
the book Reserve ration meat it could be
00:05:25
a pound of this or a pound of you know
00:05:27
roast beef or canned pink salmon that
00:05:31
was very
00:05:33
common and of
00:05:35
course there's no way you could find old
00:05:38
corn beef if you did it'd be like
00:05:41
Priceless if it didn't bulge
00:05:46
through there we
00:05:55
go this is just the end of a sock but
00:05:58
this piece of FB fabric is perfect I
00:06:01
think
00:06:03
for putting some coffee in
00:06:06
there take some twine you'd have any
00:06:10
fabric you could get this was one way to
00:06:12
do it that hair let's get there instant
00:06:15
coffee was also common and they called
00:06:17
it a cup of George George Washington
00:06:19
coffee company has no relation with the
00:06:21
president they were grateful for that
00:06:23
stuff cuz they a lot of times couldn't
00:06:25
heat water Building A Fire any smoke any
00:06:28
of that that's that's a big no no you'd
00:06:30
get you know
00:06:34
shelled there you
00:06:39
go a few grounds but it's not too bad
00:06:42
that actually looks quite
00:06:44
nice that is now just baked reformed
00:06:48
flour and it's super hard I've eaten
00:06:50
this kind of thing before and this is
00:06:52
actually in better shape than the old
00:06:55
Civil War hard check that had some that
00:06:57
was unusual I'll say that
00:07:03
this how there really isn't much crunch
00:07:06
it just breaks down into like a nothing
00:07:08
sorry to be
00:07:10
gross like
00:07:12
just flour is there any shortening in
00:07:15
that I'm not sure if there is it's so
00:07:17
minimal it's like a very neutral biscuit
00:07:21
hard
00:07:25
attack oh
00:07:28
yeah son Sunshine biscuits the burnt one
00:07:31
is the one that I find most appealing
00:07:35
you know that nice little bit of you
00:07:37
know Char or
00:07:40
just it doesn't smell like anything it's
00:07:42
such a
00:07:47
neutral that's okay it's a little bit
00:07:49
watery it's really smooth okay this is
00:07:52
the kind of thing you have to soak it
00:07:54
you can't dunk it you have to soak the
00:07:56
stuff let's see if it
00:07:58
floats
00:08:00
you can still see sun on there it's like
00:08:04
sad that's going to go you know I hate
00:08:06
even eating the fraction ones they
00:08:08
there's something about these that
00:08:09
really do I mean you know they'll last
00:08:11
forever they'll be great on a shelf so
00:08:14
all of the ones over there that are in
00:08:16
good
00:08:17
shape
00:08:22
oh what a
00:08:25
relief that's the only way you're going
00:08:26
to eat
00:08:28
them yeah so
00:08:44
good boy the meat just a little bite of
00:08:50
meat oh yeah definitely unappealing the
00:08:55
corn beef is just those poor guys but
00:08:58
you know what it's really soft salty
00:08:59
they're sweating a lot and this is the
00:09:01
only protein they're getting it's got to
00:09:02
be amazing you probably open up that can
00:09:04
and take a bite right out of the
00:09:10
top yeah there's no way you can bite
00:09:13
into it as is I mean this right here I
00:09:16
shouldn't even be just sinking I can
00:09:18
just dunk it
00:09:19
like oh okay maybe I
00:09:24
can but oh that was a nice burnt piece
00:09:27
that was good
00:09:29
I had a little bit of
00:09:32
flavor there's just an Ever So slight
00:09:35
flavor of wheat I mean the wheat flavor
00:09:37
is so minimal this is so Bland which is
00:09:41
great I mean these things again are
00:09:43
built to last it's perfect for war you
00:09:45
need food that's going to be Bland
00:09:47
that's not going to offend you know any
00:09:49
pallet so instead they just offend all
00:09:51
of them you know minorly by being Bland
00:09:55
and then lasting forever that's that's
00:09:57
what you want out of a you know a
00:10:06
ration
00:10:09
W that wasn't so
00:10:12
bad the reserve ration was initially
00:10:15
tested by the first Cavalry out of Fort
00:10:17
Sila Oklahoma May 1897 it was on kioa
00:10:22
and kamandi Native reserves and back
00:10:25
then those reserves were pretty
00:10:27
Barren even if those dudes wanted to
00:10:30
forge for food there they wouldn't have
00:10:31
been able to it's not like they were
00:10:33
really super outdoorsy I mean they could
00:10:35
March eat the hot meals they were given
00:10:38
they were tough guys but it's not like
00:10:40
they were any kind of like you know
00:10:42
survivalist types to the point where
00:10:44
they could you know Forge any sort of
00:10:46
sustainable amount outside of the
00:10:49
rations they're given in this location
00:10:51
they were at to test the food so the
00:10:53
only food they had that they could rely
00:10:55
on were these you know Reserve rations
00:10:58
they were issued
00:10:59
it was a 10day training Mission they
00:11:03
brought five rations per man per day you
00:11:05
know what that means they got to split
00:11:06
those rations in half a 50% portion back
00:11:10
then the reserve ration was a little bit
00:11:12
different it was 4,100 calories instead
00:11:15
of
00:11:16
3,349 so it was a little bit more food
00:11:19
and it was a little bit cooler too you
00:11:20
know it was 10 oz of bacon 16 oz of hard
00:11:23
bread which back then the hard bread
00:11:26
were in these like cardboard like paper
00:11:28
containers they didn't protect against
00:11:30
gas attacks bugs rain or anything like
00:11:33
that but um 16 oz of hard bread again
00:11:37
the 10 oz of bacon 4 oz of pea meal 2 oz
00:11:41
of coffee four grains of sacarin a half
00:11:45
ooun of tobacco a half ooun of salt and
00:11:49
two fths of an ounce of
00:11:51
pepper that
00:11:55
strip this is great they marged 21 miles
00:11:59
per day they found a 250 calorie
00:12:02
allotment they were you know given per
00:12:04
day the half ration portion they found
00:12:06
it to be sufficient it it worked the
00:12:09
guys they didn't really lose too much
00:12:11
energy and the average weight loss was
00:12:13
only 3 lbs per Soldier you know on this
00:12:17
10-day Mission you know that's still
00:12:20
more food than like an lrp or something
00:12:22
I
00:12:27
mean
00:12:37
the older version having that tobacco
00:12:40
and whatnot and bacon instead but they
00:12:43
couldn't Supply that in any sort of
00:12:45
massive numbers during World War I it
00:12:48
just wasn't feasible stuff like this
00:12:50
hardly was if the Standard supply lines
00:12:52
for ammunition food and medical supplies
00:12:55
were cut off typically from artillery or
00:12:58
like the road was flooded out this is
00:13:01
what was used the US Army emergency Russ
00:13:04
was taken out of service in
00:13:06
1922 and then in
00:13:08
1937 it was finally replaced by
00:13:11
something new and that is the US Army
00:13:14
Field ration
00:13:15
D and the reserve ration was split into
00:13:18
two separate Meals by the 20s and 30s
00:13:21
and then in 1938 the US Reserve ration
00:13:25
in its final form and version was in
00:13:28
three separate meals and that one year
00:13:31
later turns into the US Army Field
00:13:34
ration type c and this is your 16 o tall
00:13:39
Bean initial like prototype version
00:13:43
first used and tested spring of
00:13:46
1940 and was deemed too large of a
00:13:49
portion was taken down to 12 oz and then
00:13:54
a confection added this right here is
00:13:58
what these special rations evolved into
00:14:01
hard bread 8 oz United States Quarter
00:14:04
Master
00:14:27
Core
00:14:42
whoa hard tack D who knows how this is
00:14:51
looking look at
00:14:54
that like bugs somehow still got in
00:14:59
there look at all the insect
00:15:02
holes I'm gonna keep that as is all
00:15:06
right let's check out another one so
00:15:08
we're back with
00:15:13
another nice hiss did you hear that Bel
00:15:17
Air rushing into it too
00:15:27
nice
00:15:47
wow parchment paper wrapped let's smell
00:15:52
it it smells like
00:15:57
wheat that's that's a nice little
00:15:59
souvenir right
00:16:05
there no bugs nothing of the
00:16:09
sorts all right let's get sat on your
00:16:12
tray nice okay go ahead and get that
00:16:15
first hard bread out it's a casualty but
00:16:19
you know what it's kind of like the way
00:16:22
it goes I'm not going to eat this one
00:16:25
nice look at that not going to eat this
00:16:27
sorry I got too much
00:16:29
lead and just everything it's like
00:16:32
that's that's like the brittle that's
00:16:35
kind of a shame part of the display no
00:16:38
big deal let's
00:16:39
just let the rest of it that's amazing
00:16:44
cuz it's like Civil War hard attack
00:16:45
almost but in a
00:16:47
can all
00:16:56
right wow that parchment paper kept
00:17:00
everything in pretty good shape actually
00:17:02
kept it from contact from the metal just
00:17:06
smells pretty normal and just a little
00:17:09
bit
00:17:18
mey oh that's that's perfectly fine
00:17:22
nothing wrong with
00:17:24
it how many do you
00:17:27
get I don't know but I definitely worked
00:17:30
up an appetite
00:17:33
today not
00:17:50
bad there we there we
00:17:53
go you see up there there's butter let's
00:17:57
get these back on the tra
00:18:06
okay this corn beef with onion I'm kind
00:18:10
of cheating a little bit it's going to
00:18:13
be way
00:18:27
better
00:18:29
I know these guys probably didn't have
00:18:30
butter but they very likely had
00:18:36
lard
00:18:57
okay
00:19:00
canned bacon got that right there this
00:19:04
is cooking in butter all
00:19:10
right wow that looks kind of good what
00:19:14
you could really
00:19:19
use there were those crumbs but I don't
00:19:22
like that I don't trust that you know
00:19:25
but this you can
00:19:27
do
00:19:38
we
00:19:39
need
00:19:41
reinforcements there you go look at that
00:19:43
my stomach's growling I'm so hungry I'm
00:19:46
ready to have a nice meal this is the
00:19:49
way to do it you know that won't stick
00:19:51
to the pan this way or anything like
00:19:53
that nothing to worry about look it you
00:19:57
know I don't think that's enough hard
00:19:59
bread in there I think there needs to be
00:20:01
just like one more this one's like a
00:20:04
little messed
00:20:09
up I me cuz there's not a worry in the
00:20:13
world like it didn't affect the
00:20:15
nutritional value that's the whole thing
00:20:18
that I just love about this this just
00:20:21
some like cheap home cooking I think
00:20:24
nothing really all that unusual about it
00:20:27
really
00:20:30
all right let's let this cook a minute
00:20:32
it needs more
00:20:37
butter so I mean this thing changed only
00:20:40
a few times throughout the 20s and 30s
00:20:42
trench warfare didn't really change it
00:20:45
was only after you know Blitz cre combat
00:20:49
and
00:20:51
1939 us knew they needed better rations
00:20:56
okay look at that
00:21:00
that nice looking meal the butter
00:21:03
absorbs into the hard bread oh this is
00:21:07
going to be so
00:21:11
good actually I think it would be
00:21:13
disappointing if I don't put a little
00:21:16
bacon in this maybe that's like out of
00:21:18
control let's just add one piece of
00:21:23
bacon just for good
00:21:27
measure
00:21:31
this is ready it looks amazing smells
00:21:35
Smokey and like buttery and insanely
00:21:39
good
00:21:41
and
00:21:57
oo
00:21:58
first bite has bacon three pieces of
00:22:01
hard bread and some nicely browned corn
00:22:09
beef a little dry that's awesome
00:22:12
though that's like beef
00:22:15
jerky
00:22:19
wow this absorbs so much fat lost a lot
00:22:22
of its moisture content because the beef
00:22:25
cooked like transferred a lot of its
00:22:27
moisture over to the hard bread with the
00:22:29
butter like it all equalized and it's
00:22:32
like dried out
00:22:35
like you know that beef jerky that's in
00:22:38
the dip containers it's kind of like dip
00:22:41
you may ever see that
00:22:46
before it tastes so much like
00:22:56
that
00:22:58
with really strong coffee in the hard
00:23:03
bread I
00:23:05
mean not
00:23:08
marked could have been canned from the
00:23:10
American Biscuit Company National
00:23:13
Biscuit Company like Nabisco feel like
00:23:16
maybe potentially a JB
00:23:19

00:23:30
throughout America contracted to make
00:23:32
these all B here hold
00:23:35
on really that be that's one one with
00:23:38
like a little imperfection
00:23:40
there let's get that little part will
00:23:42
break off
00:23:44
easier Noe never
00:23:46
mind
00:23:52
oh this is easy to eat it's not even
00:23:55
thirst provoking there's no salt
00:23:58
very mild flavor it's picked up a bit of
00:24:01
the wax paper for
00:24:07
flavor excuse me for smell
00:24:14
sorry I want to eat this while it's
00:24:18
hot all that
00:24:21
butter is totally the way to do
00:24:25
it unbelievably good
00:24:28
the onion onion corn beef they weren't
00:24:32
enjoying it like this most
00:24:37
likely the hard hard bread absorbs so
00:24:41
much butter and flavor and with the salt
00:24:45
and that onion and with that corn beef
00:24:47
that's brown it was like but I mean you
00:24:50
got to enjoy
00:24:52
it these things are be floating around
00:24:55
till the end of time they pop up up
00:24:58
pretty often I've seen like 5050 of them
00:25:00
in like 5 years and that's that's like a
00:25:03
minimum
00:25:26
number
00:25:29
coffee flavored little sugar
00:25:46
cookie 1917 1918 held up all this time
00:25:51
made an experience back in May of 1897
00:25:55
the first Cavalry out of Fort silo
00:25:57
Oklahoma before their mission and after
00:26:00
the training mission where they used
00:26:01
this thinging the 40 soldiers pulled on
00:26:04
a dynamometer they got stronger at the
00:26:07
end of their mission they actually
00:26:09
pulled a ton more living off the reserve

00:26:28
tab it's like a Cadet blue navy blue to
00:26:33
the paint protect it from corrosion
00:26:36
September
00:26:37
1917 or
00:26:39
1914 a little bit hard to tell could be
00:26:42
1912 17 Oz not to be opened except by
00:26:47
order of an officer except an extremity
00:26:50
this one got dented years ago it's
00:26:53
probably why it never got opened neat
00:26:55
and somebody just saved it
00:27:00
an
00:27:01
1899 and produced by the American
00:27:04
compressed food company out of pic New

00:27:12

00:27:16
contains enough palatable food and drink
00:27:19
to sustain one man for one day under all
00:27:25
conditions it has
00:27:28
pkin and sweet tea it was used in a
00:27:31
tropical climate in the Philippines in
00:27:34
the Philippine American war in
00:27:37
1899 tab would open at the top here just
00:27:41
a little
00:27:42
denting you know these first generation
00:27:45
tinned hard breads designed to protect
00:27:48
against gas
00:27:50
attacks you figure it's at least well
00:27:53
after April
00:27:55
1915 that's when your first gas attacks
00:27:57
occurred that's in Belgium World War
00:28:00
I this it was packed by National Biscuit
00:28:05
Company it's such a strange one why why
00:28:08
they have the sharp Corners what if you
00:28:11
had to like Duck and Cover you know like
00:28:14
how easy is it to just open like
00:28:22
this oh I can't put it back
00:28:26
now
00:28:43
nice there we
00:28:51
go it's a heck of a piece of metal look
00:28:55
how that peeled there that thing has got
00:28:57
the strip there you could have peeled on
00:28:59
that side that one's harder to pull up
00:29:01
but it was two strips that are soldered
00:29:04
together is it really like reliable
00:29:08
against gas attack I doubt it was even
00:29:12
like protecting like barely protecting
00:29:15
against
00:29:17
water I thought about maybe opening the
00:29:19
nicer one
00:29:21
but you know it could be the
00:29:26
same
00:29:30
wow yeah
00:29:31
Nabisco bugs got
00:29:34
in how did they even get
00:29:37
in these soldering jobs are
00:29:42
faulty here I can't help but barely any
00:29:45
scent just a slight stale
00:29:50
smell National Biscuit Company out of
00:29:53
New York
00:29:56
Nabisco
00:30:08
look those bugs got in and gosh that
00:30:11
doesn't bod well for for this hard bread
00:30:14
it must not have tasted too good I don't
00:30:17
know it's like they got in and they
00:30:21
didn't eat anything they're covered in
00:30:24
bug debris like little part Les of it
00:30:50
see it's just too bad I can't there's no
00:30:53
way I'm trying it out I wonder where the
00:30:56
fault point was or were the bugs inside
00:30:59
the whole time these are
00:31:03
weevils Weevil
00:31:08
larva very strange that they didn't
00:31:12
really survive like more in there I mean
00:31:17
usually it could have been a really nice
00:31:19
little home for him for a long time and
00:31:22
they could have eaten a lot more I'm
00:31:23
surprised they didn't see if we can
00:31:26
close it back up
00:31:28
a reclosable container for the most part
00:31:31
at least I mean that's pretty cool heck
00:31:34
you could you could like empty it out
00:31:36
and put it over a fire and like cook in
00:31:41
it you could probably um shave you know
00:31:44
it's like perfect for shave water or
00:31:47
something the lead solder and everything
00:31:49
it's just that's probably why you just
00:31:51
never see them a short production run
00:31:54
for a failure of a food container
00:31:57
realistically the standard emergency
00:32:00
ration thing had already been used a
00:32:02
little bit in the Philippines and it
00:32:05
really wasn't that great this and the
00:32:07
standard emergency ration were both
00:32:09
tested together by the eighth Cavalry
00:32:13
November 4th
00:32:14
1900 it was an intense 5-day training
00:32:18
Mission with inshape tough soldiers that
00:32:21
were marching 20 m per day they lost on
00:32:24
average 2 lb that field test proof that
00:32:27
the US Army emergency ration was far
00:32:30
superior to the standard emergency
00:32:32
ration it was adopted and used for
00:32:35
another 22 years after World War I ended
00:32:38
there were 400,000 Surplus Reserve
00:32:41
rations that end up getting shipped off
00:32:43
to Poland via train loaded up by German
00:32:48
PS there was 16,000 cases each case
00:32:52
valued at $10
00:32:55
each the reserve rash and what an
00:32:58
experience well anyway this is Steve

Description:

4 different Hard Bread ration cans opened. The Hard Bread tins are over 100 years old. First one is quite nice, another is perfectly preserved. Two others... you'll have to see for yourself. The Reserve Ration was used in WW1 and is what evolved to Field Ration Type C, which is the ration that eventually becomes the MRE, or Meal, Ready to Eat, Individual. Exclusive shelf stable food history from beginning to end. Filmed October 2019, February 2021, and December 2023. Introducing the 1914 US Navy Emergency Ration and 1899 US Standard Emergency Ration in the latter part of this review. Stay tuned for more expensive, rare, and truly fascinating rations from the past. A good portion of the Reserve Rations used in WW1 were shipped off to Poland after the war. Check out an exclusive photo at the end of the video showing this, and a ration dump with a whole bunch of canned salmon. Truly a fascinating look at not only the ration, but some really cool lost history in the photos as well. Can 1 2:00 Can 2 14:01 Can 3 15:08 Can 4 27:43 Can 3 is by far the most amazing. They were vacuum sealed and perfectly preserved hard bread biscuits - much different and more palatable than the first tin's Sunshine hard tack. It turns into a true ration cooking show with a meal that is guaranteed to make you hungry. I sure was when preparing it, after a long day with very little food. It was a meal to remember! https://www.patreon.com/steve1989 https://teespring.com/stores/steve1989 For correspondence, or to send a Military Ration for review, my exact mailing information is: Steve1989 3616 Harden Blvd 360 Lakeland, FL 33803 I only post on YouTube. -Steve1989
