with the American Association of Snowboard Instructors.
00:00:03
I'm here with REI to show you some things
00:00:05
you can do on your snowboard to have some success out there
00:00:07
if it's your first time out
00:00:08
or you've only been out for a few times.
00:00:11
So that you can get moving on your snowboard
00:00:12
and have a great time.
00:00:14
(techno music)
00:00:18
In this video we're gonna go through
00:00:19
a basic progression of how to snowboard,
00:00:21
starting with standing on flat ground.
00:00:23
Just getting comfortable in our gear.
00:00:24
All the way up to starting to connect our turns
00:00:26
and getting around the resort.
00:00:28
If you haven't seen how to strap into your snowboard yet,
00:00:30
please check out that video.
00:00:33
(techno music)
00:00:37
So now that we're strapped in and on a flat,
00:00:39
we can also start to think about our snowboard stance.
00:00:41
A good snowboard stance is very similar
00:00:43
to any athletic stance where our ankles,
00:00:45
knees and hips are all in line, nice and relaxed.
00:00:48
And standing right in line with our snowboard.
00:00:53
So you can see how everything gets a little bit lower
00:00:55
but is pretty relaxed, nothing too aggressive and just calm.
00:00:59
The first thing we're gonna do is find a really,
00:01:01
really good flat spot.
00:01:02
Somewhere when you put the snowboard down,
00:01:04
it's not gonna slide away.
00:01:06
Strap both feet in and while you're here,
00:01:08
the whole goal is just to start moving with two feet in
00:01:10
without feeling like you're gonna slide away.
00:01:13
And feel what it's like to have a snowboard
00:01:14
on your feet for the first time.
00:01:17
So I like to just wiggle around,
00:01:18
jump a little bit and get moving.
00:01:23
(Snow crunching)
00:01:28
Alright, now that you've had both feet in on your snowboard
00:01:30
and you're starting to feel comfortable with that,
00:01:32
it's time to go ahead and take one foot out
00:01:34
and we'll learn how to skate.
00:01:35
If you're not sure which foot to take out,
00:01:37
I just recommend doing whatever ones going to feel
00:01:40
the most comfortable to be the one that you're kicking with,
00:01:42
which will as well be your back foot.
00:01:45
You can start with your foot behind the snowboard
00:01:47
or in front of the snowboard.
00:01:49
Whatever feels more comfortable to you.
00:01:51
I like to stand behind my snowboard
00:01:53
because it just keeps my body nice and in line.
00:01:55
Start off with really, really little steps.
00:02:00
And try to make sure that your back foot
00:02:01
doesn't go too far past your back binding,
00:02:03
else you might start to do an accidental split.
00:02:08
Practice both behind and in front.
00:02:12
Which is just good practice on how to get around
00:02:14
people if you're standing in the lift line
00:02:16
or wherever you need to go when you're out on snow.
00:02:23
It's also good to put a little bit of weight
00:02:24
on the front foot and start to balance on it.
00:02:30
Once that feels good, you can start to glide
00:02:32
which is when we put our back foot
00:02:35
right up against the back binding and coast.
00:02:46
(Techno music)
00:02:51
Now that you've practiced
00:02:52
and gotten comfortable on the flat ground,
00:02:54
it's time to take it to a little bit of a slope.
00:02:57
So when picking out good terrain for this,
00:02:59
what I really focus on is that my slope
00:03:02
will naturally stop myself.
00:03:05
It's totally flat at the end, so I don't have to worry
00:03:07
about getting myself to stop snowboarding.
00:03:10
It's gonna naturally do that.
00:03:12
So for this, just like we were doing on flat ground,
00:03:14
I'm gonna point my board right down the fall line,
00:03:16
which - fall line is wherever the slope
00:03:19
is actually gonna pull you.
00:03:20
So where gravity is gonna take you.
00:03:22
And I'm going to put my back foot
00:03:24
right up against that binding again,
00:03:25
sink into this nice low snowboard stance.
00:03:30
Looking where you're going,
00:03:33
until you come to a stop.
00:03:35
Make sure that with this we're practicing this quite a bit,
00:03:39
so that this feels totally comfortable.
00:03:41
If at first, this is a little scary
00:03:45
just start a little bit lower down
00:03:46
so you don't have as much speed.
00:03:47
As you get comfortable though,
00:03:48
maybe work your way up just a little bit.
00:03:52
When practicing the straight glide,
00:03:54
this our time to reinforce our stance
00:03:56
make sure we're standing nice in line with the board.
00:03:59
And this is gonna set up us for success later on.
00:04:01
Alright, so now that we've gotten comfortable
00:04:03
riding straight to a stop,
00:04:04
we're gonna start shaping our board
00:04:06
and starting to turn it just a little bit.
00:04:08
This is what we call a J-Turn
00:04:11
and you do it both heel and toe.
00:04:13
But we're gonna start off with the heel side.
00:04:15
What I mean by heel side is that we're gonna be turning
00:04:17
towards the heel side of my snowboard,
00:04:19
which is the back side here.
00:04:21
And what I'm gonna do is start to shift my weight,
00:04:24
my hips right over the board.
00:04:27
And as I do that, I'm gonna start to feel my legs
00:04:30
and my calves specifically hit the high back,
00:04:34
the back of my binding
00:04:35
and just start to feel some pressure there.
00:04:37
As I lean back very gradually,
00:04:38
I wanna keep my knees nice and bent
00:04:41
and I'm gonna pick up the board just a little bit.
00:04:46
So pick up the toe side and I'm feeling the top of my boot
00:04:50
while I do that.
00:04:52
So let's go try it out.
00:04:55
Alright so I head down the hill,
00:04:56
I get in that athletic stance
00:04:58
and then I'll start to move into heel side J-Turn.
00:05:03
(snow crunching)
00:05:08
Alright, so as I head down the hill
00:05:10
I'm gonna send it nice and straight in that
00:05:12
nice snowboard stance that we were practicing.
00:05:14
Back foot against the back binding.
00:05:16
And then I'm gonna slowly shift my weight towards my heel,
00:05:18
feeling that high back and slowly lifting my toes up.
00:05:24
(snow crunching)
00:05:29
Once that's feeling pretty good,
00:05:31
we can start to practice toe side.
00:05:33
Just like we started with the heel side,
00:05:34
we're gonna get in that nice
00:05:35
athletic stance, even on both feet.
00:05:38
And as we wanna start that toe turn,
00:05:40
we can start to flex our ankle
00:05:44
so that our knee is going out over our toes.
00:05:48
And I'm starting to shift the weight towards the toes
00:05:51
and I can just very slightly pick up my heels.
00:05:54
You don't want to be way up on your tip toes
00:05:55
or anything like this, it's pretty subtle.
00:05:59
Let's try it out.
00:06:01
Alright, so I'm gonna head down the hill
00:06:03
that nice, even stance.
00:06:04
And as I sink into that stance,
00:06:06
I'm gonna start to shift my weight towards that toe edge.
00:06:09
Again flexing the ankle, squishing that ankle strap
00:06:13
and getting our knees out over our toes.
00:06:15
And bringing up that heel just a little bit.
00:06:19
(snow crunching)
00:06:23
Alright, let's practice those toe turns a couple times.
00:06:26
Get low, then slowly move towards that edge.
00:06:34
(snow crunching)
00:06:41
(techno music)
00:06:46
Alright so now that we're comfortable,
00:06:49
starting to get some direction with our J-Turn,
00:06:51
our foot out of the binding.
00:06:53
Now we're gonna strap two feet in
00:06:55
and get going with both feet in our snowboard.
00:06:58
So I'm gonna go ahead, start on toe side
00:06:59
just because it's a little bit easier to stand up that way.
00:07:02
Get up nice and slow, find that balance point on that edge.
00:07:05
It's hard to stand still when we're on a snowboard,
00:07:08
so let's get moving.
00:07:10
So right now, I'm on that edge.
00:07:12
My hips are over my feet and I'm on the toe edge.
00:07:16
I'm gonna start to shift my weight towards that front foot.
00:07:18
Give it a little bounce, start to go
00:07:21
and as I move my weight towards this foot
00:07:24
flatten the board just a tiny, tiny bit.
00:07:27
I'm gonna start going across the hill.
00:07:31
Only go a little bit at a time to start off.
00:07:33
When I wanna stop I'm just gonna
00:07:35
shift my weight to the middle,
00:07:37
lean a little bit further uphill and I'm gonna stop.
00:07:40
And it's okay if you're sliding just a little bit,
00:07:42
you can also go ahead and sit down.
00:07:44
Let's try that again.
00:07:45
Stand up, get balanced.
00:07:48
I'm gonna slowly shift my weight over that front foot,
00:07:50
flatten just a little bit and here I go.
00:07:55
When I wanna stop, get my weight to the middle.
00:07:58
I lean a little bit further uphill
00:08:00
and move my hips across the board as well further uphill.
00:08:03
It's also really important that when we're starting
00:08:06
we're making sure our board is totally across the fall line.
00:08:08
If I try to stand up and I'm pointing one way or the other,
00:08:11
gravity is gonna start taking me
00:08:12
and I'm gonna have to try to get myself to stop
00:08:15
rather than being in control from the start.
00:08:23
(snow crunching)
00:08:30
Alright now that I've made it across the trail on my toes,
00:08:33
I'm gonna roll over, get to my heels
00:08:34
and start traversing on my heel edge.
00:08:39
Alright, so standing up on the heels
00:08:42
crab walk yourself towards that edge of the board,
00:08:44
make sure your board's not sliding away.
00:08:46
Get your arm out in front to counter balance yourself.
00:08:49
Slowly stand up.
00:08:50
Now same thing as we we're doing on the toes,
00:08:52
we're gonna slowly shift our weight over our front foot.
00:08:55
Start to get creeping.
00:08:58
When we wanna stop, weight to the center
00:09:02
and lean uphill just little bit more.
00:09:04
To get going again shift that weight over the front foot,
00:09:07
flatten that toe edge just a little bit.
00:09:12
Weight to the center, picking up the toes a little more
00:09:15
and getting my weight back uphill.
00:09:22
(snow crunching)
00:09:26
And as I get really comfortable doing this,
00:09:28
I can go for longer and longer stints.
00:09:30
Maybe playing with a little bit more speed,
00:09:32
little bit less speed,
00:09:33
making sure I can stop when I want to.
00:09:39
Remember that when we stop, that board needs to come
00:09:42
totally across the hill to be able to come to a stop.
00:09:45
If we're still pointed downhill,
00:09:46
we're gonna keep gaining speed.
00:09:53
(techno music)
00:09:58
Alright, so now that we're getting really comfortable
00:09:59
going across the hill traversing both toe and heel side,
00:10:03
we can start to changes edges and go into our first turn.
00:10:06
So for this, what I'm looking for is a spot on the hill
00:10:09
that just like when we're practicing our J-Turns
00:10:11
is gonna have a nice run out.
00:10:12
So I'm not gaining too much speed
00:10:14
when I do point down the hill for the first time.
00:10:16
We want us to be pretty comfortable and not afraid.
00:10:18
So when I stand up,
00:10:21
I'm gonna shift my weight towards that front foot,
00:10:22
get me moving in a traverse just like I was doing before.
00:10:25
This time we're gonna start to flatten the board slowly
00:10:30
so that I start pointing down the hill.
00:10:32
So I'm traversing,
00:10:35
shift a little bit more weight towards that front foot
00:10:38
and let my board go a little bit flat.
00:10:41
Now I'm totally flat and down the hill,
00:10:44
I can roll on to that toe edge
00:10:45
just like we were doing the traverse and our J-Turn.
00:10:49
There's our first turn.
00:10:51
Alright so now we're gonna go onto our first heel side turn.
00:10:54
We're gonna start off on our toe side traversing
00:10:57
as we start to go we're gonna shift our weight
00:10:58
towards that front foot.
00:10:59
Then we're gonna shift our weight so the we start
00:11:01
to flatten the board and come off the edge.
00:11:03
That's gonna let us come down the hill.
00:11:05
As we head straight down the hill
00:11:06
with the board totally flat,
00:11:08
that's when we can start doing that heel side J
00:11:11
like we've practiced with one foot
00:11:13
into that heel side traverse
00:11:15
like what we've been practicing on the hill.
00:11:20
Standing up, traversing.
00:11:22
Weight over that front foot.
00:11:24
Start to flex, get even lower.
00:11:28
Let that board go flat and straight.
00:11:30
And then rock onto those heels.
00:11:33
Come to a stop.
00:11:34
There's our first heel side turn.
00:11:36
Alright so now that we've done both the toe side turn
00:11:39
and the heel side turn back to our traverse,
00:11:41
we're just gonna start to get more comfortable with them,
00:11:43
put in some practice and get some mileage.
00:11:47
So as we get going, I'm gonna go ahead and make those turns.
00:11:51
And in between I'm just gonna give myself
00:11:53
a second to slow down, stop,
00:11:55
get back into my good athletic stance
00:11:57
and make sure I'm ready for that next turn again.
00:11:59
And as you get more comfortable with these,
00:12:00
they'll start flowing together
00:12:01
so you don't even need to stop.
00:12:12
Alright I'm on my toe side edge,
00:12:14
I'm heading across the hill.
00:12:15
I'm starting to head down the hill, let the board go flat.
00:12:18
Now I'm gonna move across to my heels.
00:12:27
(snow crunching)
00:12:35
We hope you find these tips helpful.
00:12:36
Make sure you're taking the time to practice
00:12:38
each one of these steps before moving onto the next.
