scammed me i met this gentleman on00:01:09
facebook he friended me there he gave me00:01:12
the name of adam chris00:01:16
and i believe he is 38 years old that's00:01:19
what he told me00:01:21
actually the reason i was online i was00:01:24
basically just uh facebook i was not an00:01:28
online dating00:01:30
but i was going through a rough time00:01:33
my partner seven years00:01:36
had cancer and i was taking care of him00:01:39
and it was more or less of a diversion00:01:41
for me because it was very rough here00:01:45
but the message he sent me was he liked00:01:47
my profile he liked my personality00:01:51
thought i had a good sense of humor00:01:53
would i please friend him on facebook so00:01:57
we could chat00:01:58
it started in october when he first00:02:01
started talking to me he was very00:02:04
pleasant00:02:05
his picture actually is what attracted00:02:09
me to him00:02:11
and then he started you know talking00:02:13
about his life00:02:15
he said he had his son00:02:17
he00:02:18
moved00:02:19
from00:02:20
kuwait city00:02:22
he had custody of his son they were on00:02:25
vacation then he just briefly kept00:02:28
talking to me about his life and we00:02:30
chatted back and forth00:02:33
then he went and he told me he had to go00:02:37
back to work he was no longer going to00:02:39
be on00:02:40
vacation and he was going to go work on00:02:43
an oil rig would i go on to chat00:02:47
so that we could talk while he was at00:02:50
work he was very good looking has a00:02:52
beard dark hair he had pictures of00:02:55
himself with him and his son but one00:02:58
thing that caught my attention is00:03:01
he dresses00:03:03
very well everything is designer00:03:06
dressing and i did make a comment about00:03:09
the way he dressed00:03:11
and he says nothing for him and his son00:03:14
to spend 50000:03:16
on clothes when they shopped00:03:18
he's just very clean cut00:03:21
he's arabic just very handsome00:03:25
i actually was with a gentleman for 1400:03:28
years who was 20 years younger00:03:31

my last partner was 20 years older00:03:37

i discussed with this gentleman my age00:03:41
and i said he told me his age and i told00:03:44
him my age and he said oh that doesn't00:03:47
bother me at all00:03:49
and so we just it just went from there00:03:52

i talked to him about my parkinson's he00:03:58
seemed like he understood it00:04:01
i told him about my partner who was sick00:04:03
and he gave00:04:05
you know every time he talked to me he'd00:04:07
ask how my partner was doing00:04:10
and he was always concerned whether i00:04:13
was eating i was sleeping i was taking00:04:16
care of myself and just overall in00:04:19
general00:04:20
interested in everything i was doing in00:04:23
a day and he contacted me00:04:26
constantly he'd get up in the morning00:04:29
and i'd wake up and be a message from00:04:32
him saying good morning i was the first00:04:35
thing on his mind he just gave me a lot00:04:38
of attention at a time that00:04:40
it was rough for me so because the00:04:44
attention is what i needed00:04:46
my partner actually passed away in00:04:49
december it was very good to me you know00:04:52
i'm sure it sounds crazy to anybody00:04:56
as to what i was doing but adam just00:04:59
kind of00:05:00
came into my life at the right time00:05:03
because i took care of00:05:05
my boyfriend by myself and it was it was00:05:09
a distraction for me00:05:11
i believe it was in november he asked me00:05:15
for money for data00:05:18
he said he forgot to buy it before he00:05:21
went on the oil rig00:05:23
and i refused to give it to him and he00:05:29
got angry whatever he knew how to play00:05:32
the game that if he didn't talk to me it00:05:35
would upset me well he claimed he was00:05:38
working on an oil rig outside of rome00:05:42
and the day he flew there and i said00:05:45
take some pictures of rome and he said00:05:48
he couldn't take any because he was on00:05:51
the rig00:05:52
on a daily basis he would get up go to00:05:56
work at seven00:05:58
maybe around nine he would claim he was00:06:00
on break relaxing00:06:03
then again about 11 30 he was on break00:06:06
but he00:06:07
he said he worked to like seven o'clock00:06:10
at night but every time that he said he00:06:13
was on break he was messaging me or00:06:16
talking to his son00:06:18
i never really asked him in the00:06:21
beginning for pictures but his time went00:06:24
on i got skeptical where he was00:06:27
and he sent me a picture one picture00:06:32
and then i asked him to take a picture00:06:34
of himself in his uh00:06:37
room or wherever he was staying and he00:06:40
did take one with him laying on the bed00:06:43
with00:06:44
his head on a pillow00:06:46
i got him more skeptical and he took00:06:48
another picture supposedly on the rick00:06:52
but that he had to take medication00:06:55
for a heart problem and he said briefly00:06:59
that he spilled his pills and i just00:07:02
said okay00:07:03
but then weeks later he said he was00:07:06
almost out of his pills00:07:09
and he couldn't access his money00:07:12
could i help him00:07:14
so he could get00:07:16
them get the medication00:07:19
that was one time then weeks later00:07:22
uh he was supposed to be coming off the00:07:24
rig in january and he was supposed to00:07:27
meet me some equipment00:07:30
broke down00:07:32
and he had to have before he could get00:07:34
off the rig he had to have money00:07:37
for the equipment00:07:39
then he needed money for00:07:42
some medical insurance for him and his00:07:45
crew00:07:46
that they weren't gonna let them get off00:07:48
it was american express gift cards00:07:52
and uh of course you can't they don't allow00:07:55
you buy them in a big lump sum so i00:07:57
would literally go from store to store00:08:01
uh buying 500 gift cards to00:08:05
get the money together00:08:07
then when i got the gift cards i would00:08:10
have take pictures for00:08:12
him00:08:13
of the gift cards00:08:15
i was smart enough i paid cash for him00:08:19
because i figured if anything was going00:08:21
on and he's got any kind of information00:08:25
uh00:08:26
like the end of my account number my00:08:29
address where i was buying these gift00:08:31
cards i made sure none of that was on00:08:34
because he wanted to see pictures of the00:08:36
receipts also00:08:39
conversations with him now are very00:08:41
brief00:08:42
uh he has not asked me for anything00:08:45
since the last time and i refused00:08:49
uh he would at any point in time when he00:08:52
was asking for the money and i refused00:08:56
would put the uh emojis that he was00:08:59
crying or emojis he was angry that i00:09:03
didn't care about him he never00:09:05
threatened me at all he would always say00:09:08
that i didn't care about him i didn't00:09:10
care about his son00:09:12
right now again00:09:14
he'll send me a good morning beautiful00:09:17
or i will always love you um you know00:09:22
that that's kind of what's going on00:09:24
sometimes i answer sometimes i ignore00:09:27
him if i ignore him hours later he'll00:09:30
crop up00:09:32
the reason i don't want to tell my00:09:34
family is they can be very judgmental00:09:38
they00:09:40
they would not be there to00:09:44
support me00:09:45
and help me get through it it would be00:09:48
more of a nancy made a mistake again and00:09:54
that kind of thing because i've kind of00:09:56
been00:09:57
uh the00:09:58
black sheep of the family all my life so00:10:01
it was just one more notch in my belt so00:10:04
to speak00:10:06

um i was being scammed and00:10:14

there do not fall into the same00:10:25
situation i did there's a lot of00:10:28

so we wanted to get into some of the00:12:34
images that we were looking at to kind00:12:36
of give you an idea of how we came to00:12:38
the conclusion that adam isn't who he00:12:40
says he is right off the bat we see this00:12:42
image all the time it's all over the00:12:44
internet all over romance scams it's a00:12:47
guy leaning up against a guardrail on an00:12:49
oil rig holding up a paper and00:12:52
scammers photoshop the face they00:12:55
photoshop what's on the paper they they00:12:58
take this image and they just run wild00:13:00
with it so we see this all the time and00:13:03
whenever we see this picture in the case00:13:05
it's a high00:13:07
likelihood that00:13:09
it's a it's a scam unfortunately00:13:12
so nancy i also wanted to go over the00:13:15
amex gift cards that were used for the00:13:18
form of payment to adam with amex gift00:13:22
cards00:13:23
they're untraceable because there's no00:13:25
information no personal information00:13:27
attached to these types of cards so once00:13:30
you send them and they're used there's00:13:33
no way to retrieve that information and00:13:36
there's no way to reverse those charges00:13:39
so although we weren't able to track the00:13:41
method of payment we were able to send a00:13:44
tracker to the scammer so we can find00:13:46
out where in the world this person is00:13:48
located so we got a couple of hits and00:13:50
at first it was kind of all over the00:13:52
place because scammers use something00:13:54
called a vpn which masks your actual00:13:56
location based on your ip address so00:14:00
once he clicked it on the mobile device00:14:01
we're able to pin down the actual00:14:03
location and unfortunately he was00:14:06
located in lagos nigeria which is00:14:08
another major red flag for whether or00:14:11
not it's a scam so it it looks like uh00:14:14
that was the result of the tracker as00:14:16
well so what we were also able00:14:19
to confirm when searching adam we did00:14:23
find00:14:24
a real profile with his images and the00:14:26
name that he goes by is zane which is00:14:29
something that you were able to verify00:14:32
as well correct nancy yes uh-huh00:14:35
and one thing that we always like to00:14:37
point out is the person in these photos00:14:39
is just as much of a victim as anybody00:14:42
in the situation because they're just00:14:44
unknowingly posting their photos on00:14:45
social media like anybody else and00:14:48
scammers come come along and take these00:14:50
images and use them to steal money from00:14:52
other people so00:14:53
unfortunately that's the case here as00:14:55
well00:14:56
he had nothing to do with the scam and00:14:58
this is just an unfortunate situation00:15:00
and he's been taken advantage of i00:15:02
actually at one point i tried to inbox00:15:06
him to be honest as much as we see this00:15:09
guy's photos i wouldn't be surprised if00:15:11
he has hundreds of messages in his inbox00:15:14
unfortunately again very unfortunate00:15:16
situation but these a lot of people get00:15:19
flooded with with people saying like hey00:15:22
i've been in a two-year relationship00:15:24
with you i've been dating you for three00:15:26
years like and it's just he's just you00:15:28
know it's a difficult situation for him00:15:31
as well what we found out looking00:15:33
through zane's accounts is that he has00:15:35
thousands of photos so00:15:38
it makes him an easy target00:15:40
because he has so much00:15:43
so much information so many photos and00:15:46
and they're publicly available00:15:48
and one of the things we always tell00:15:49
people is if you're talking to someone00:15:51
online tell them to hold up a piece of00:15:53
paper with something written on it tell00:15:55
them to put two fingers up so if you if00:15:58
someone has that posted on their profile00:16:00
it's nothing for a scammer to take it00:16:02
photoshop the image and use it as proof00:16:04
to say that they're the real person00:16:07
so the next thing nancy is00:16:10
i want to talk a little bit about your00:16:13
relationship00:16:14
with adam currently are you guys still00:16:17
talking where are you guys at00:16:20
yeah he's i've tried to stop talking to00:16:24
him but he's still00:16:27
messaging and wants money00:16:30
and um i try not to talk to him too much00:16:33
because i i know he's a fraud00:16:38
so it's it's a slow process it's an00:16:41
addiction let's just put that way to00:16:44
keep the conversation going but i know00:16:47
the00:16:48
end result is to just stop talking and00:16:52
block him00:16:53
yeah nancy actually we highly encourage00:16:56
that you you block him00:16:59

we do only because the reason why he's00:17:03
still lingering and continuing to00:17:05
connect with you is because you had00:17:07
already given him money he's trying to00:17:10

scammers have tactics and they have a00:17:27
system for getting money out of people00:17:29
he knows what buttons to press to get00:17:31

have that line of communication with him00:17:38
he's going to make your life he's going00:17:40
to torment you because he's what they do00:17:43
is they collect they collect your pain00:17:45

unfortunately if you do prolong the00:17:52
conversation with him he's going to keep00:17:54
you on an emotional roller coaster for00:17:57
