00:00:00
hello everybody and welcome back I've
00:00:02
been getting a lot of requests from
00:00:03
people asking me over and over again
00:00:04
hey Ted how do you go about hiding seams
00:00:06
or what do you do to fill in the gaps or
00:00:08
what are you make an invisible seam and
00:00:10
basically I'm going to walk you through
00:00:12
it right now right here on the old Ted
00:00:14
chaough
00:00:23
you'll need three essential things to
00:00:26
make a good seam when making your
00:00:28
costume parts number one a good clean
00:00:30
cut number two applying the glue and
00:00:33
number three
00:00:35
line them up while you stick them
00:00:36
together so there's more details
00:00:39
involves we're going to do is I'm going
00:00:40
to walk you through and explain the
00:00:42
details as we go through it
00:00:44
the foam part the choice is going to be
00:00:46
a shorter piece I have made and my
00:00:48
pattern redrawn out here is what we're
00:00:50
going to use to make a good seam so
00:00:53
number one I have my knife in my
00:00:56
sharpener so I do a little w4t on my
00:00:59
Crenshaw sharpener and if you guys want
00:01:01
to know where I get this I have a link
00:01:02
for it just below this page and also you
00:01:04
can check out my tools the first time
00:01:07
that I was watching this you can also
00:01:08
check out my tools of the trade video
00:01:10
that's good point check out so now what
00:01:15
we're doing what I like to do is cutting
00:01:16
look up the pieces I always like to have
00:01:19
a tip touch the table I like let the
00:01:21
blade do the work for example so I start
00:01:25
the table like so follow my line go nice
00:01:30
and slow and also when you're cutting to
00:01:34
keep your blade upright so you don't
00:01:35
turn so keep the edge at a 90 degree
00:01:37
angle so nice and slow yeah well now I'm
00:01:45
going to show you see that edge that's
00:01:47
nice and clean that's a 90 degree angle
00:01:49
nice and flat and clean alright now that
00:01:54
I have the parts both over cut before I
00:01:56
glue these guys again we step on to the
00:01:57
next step of glue I like to heat preheat
00:01:59
my pieces so we're going to warm these
00:02:02
up get the heat gun out and kind of pre
00:02:04
curl these file foam pieces
00:02:09
all right okay they are they'll preheat
00:02:13
ready to go and get away from my glue
00:02:15
now this is the most crucial part it's
00:02:18
using my glue door here this is full of
00:02:22
like people always asking what's my glue
00:02:24
of choice it's barge cement now what
00:02:27
barge center is the particular kind of
00:02:29
paint paint I'm sorry glue that is it's
00:02:32
a contact adhesive there's a what
00:02:36
applying it to your phone what I like to
00:02:39
do is less is more when you're using
00:02:43
something like contact adhesive and the
00:02:46
glue is also described in its name it's
00:02:49
a contact adhesive so what it is you
00:02:51
don't just glue it tape together whole
00:02:52
board to dry it sticks together when you
00:02:54
apply the two surfaces together
00:02:56
that's the name contact adhesive so what
00:02:59
I like to do is brush it on then I cut
00:03:02
some pieces of foam scrap like this you
00:03:05
can see right here and I like just go
00:03:06
over it make it nice and flat therefore
00:03:10
I know I'm getting every spot of that
00:03:11
foam if you look closely you get every
00:03:14
part of the exposing raw foam and push
00:03:17
it down to its really thin just like
00:03:21
that and when you do that you'll get a
00:03:22
little excess on the side is fine your
00:03:24
stuff wipe it up with the foam but dumb
00:03:27
you want to make sure you get that on
00:03:29
nice and even no thick spots just nice
00:03:32
and thin right okay now both these parts
00:03:35
have been coated this is my first coat
00:03:37
now just for extra precaution I got this
00:03:40
thin coat on I kept it it's kind of dry
00:03:42
so what I do now as I apply a second
00:03:44
coat what this does is that this
00:03:46
guarantees in any of other thin spots
00:03:48
and and also to foam has a tendency to
00:03:51
suck up that first coat of fog glue you
00:03:53
put on there so I want to make sure I
00:03:54
get a really good seal on this I
00:03:56
definitely put a second coat on and that
00:03:59
just guarantees that you're going to win
00:04:01
the glue sticks to it it's gonna have a
00:04:03
good glue contact because sometimes that
00:04:05
first coat just gets soaking in by the
00:04:07
foam so once again with semi dry I go
00:04:11
back in and put my second coat on doing
00:04:13
the same process taking a piece of foam
00:04:15
and going really
00:04:16
thin and even make sure I get all those
00:04:18
edges now I have the glue on it you can
00:04:26
speed the process up by using a
00:04:28
hairdryer but what I like to use
00:04:29
sometimes is if you don't have any
00:04:31
because do the option of switching the
00:04:33
heat off your ear hair dryer and just
00:04:35
use air that works well too but I - says
00:04:39
heat only so I'm going to make sure to
00:04:40
do it but I don't like it too hot like
00:04:42
just kind of keep it at a distance so
00:04:43
just cuz I'm nice even dry to it okay
00:04:50
now that's dry I like to show you - if
00:04:55
you look at the glue it's kind of semi
00:04:57
glossy but also when you touch it it's
00:05:00
not which doesn't come off in your
00:05:01
finger and it's just tacky enough if you
00:05:03
still feel attack now you're good to go
00:05:05
so once again here's the crucial park
00:05:09
taking your seams line up you got to
00:05:11
make sure you get them lined up first so
00:05:13
while I can do is line them up like so
00:05:17
top edge flush my registration marks and
00:05:21
then like I like to cut my finger along
00:05:23
it to make sure they're lined up you see
00:05:26
it it's nice and flush once again like
00:05:29
use my fingers kind of like a dam or
00:05:31
Barama to stop it keep going slowly
00:05:33
pushing say they can contact they're
00:05:38
still keeping it make sure you sparks
00:05:40
line up flush that minimizes your work
00:05:43
to go back at sand and all that kind of
00:05:44
stuff like so there is again very slowly
00:05:50
lining up no rush
00:05:53
keeping going
00:06:00
contact there you go now what I could do
00:06:02
now get on there I take my finger and
00:06:06
kind of push on the scene kind of push
00:06:09
on itself to make sure it sticks really
00:06:10
well alright that's the first part there
00:06:14
it is see nice and clean line granted
00:06:18
there's going to be a little bit of a
00:06:19
scene here so what I like to do
00:06:28
all right so 120 now let's go goo 320
00:06:37
look at you when I'm standing - I don't
00:06:40
want to work the whole area I just like
00:06:41
to work the scene and the sanding stick
00:06:43
comes in really handy for that you just
00:06:44
just doing the edge going back and forth
00:06:48
is to get all that hype with the high
00:06:49
stuff off of it
00:06:50
all right now it's a 20 and now I got me
00:06:57
a couple of water here foreigner good
00:07:00
sandpaper this is my little final pass
00:07:06
in the scanner this will really get rid
00:07:08
of the fuzz and the texture on the phone
00:07:24
right there it is now it's all dry I
00:07:27
went through with my 400 sandpaper and
00:07:30
wet sand all this down and now it's
00:07:32
really smooth it'll be a little bit of a
00:07:34
fuzz left there but if I look closely I
00:07:36
can still see a little bit of seems a
00:07:39
little bit of an air bubble over here so
00:07:40
I like to do the patch with is quick
00:07:45
seal now this is a caulking compound and
00:07:48
when they call quick seal they're not
00:07:49
kidding this because this does dry
00:07:50
quickly but what I like to do is apply
00:07:54
very little because you know I'm just
00:07:56
going to go ahead and just put a little
00:07:59
in the scene so I'm just going to put a
00:08:01
little bit on the edge here like so now
00:08:06
I have an old razor blade and that's why
00:08:10
you use like this therefore this goes
00:08:11
directly to where I wanted to go less is
00:08:14
more I don't want to use too much of
00:08:15
this stuff I just want to fill in the
00:08:16
scene so I'm just gently go over this
00:08:21
guy and the trick is to one thing with
00:08:23
quick seal to you cannot go back and say
00:08:26
in this this is a flexible compound when
00:08:27
it dries it's flexible but it does knots
00:08:30
and there's other people out there I'd
00:08:32
like to use a pretty good caulking that
00:08:34
they can go back and stand on top of my
00:08:36
philosophies always trying to make your
00:08:38
part as clean as you can so there's like
00:08:41
virtually a little work you have to do
00:08:43
to it so just going to do that on just
00:08:48
on the hairline seen just a little bit
00:08:50
so
00:08:55
is it all filled in now that I have my
00:08:58
seam sealed up with this I like to take
00:09:00
a cup of water what my finger just got
00:09:03
better the edges because this residue
00:09:07
just trying to minimize it just kind of
00:09:10
bring it down a little bit this stuff
00:09:12
goes really good the thing is the reason
00:09:13
I call it you do this one do this really
00:09:15
quick because you wait too long in the
00:09:16
stuff it gets gunking you'll drop on
00:09:19
yourself while it's still relatively wet
00:09:20
like take off a little bit of a wet
00:09:25
finger here and just kind of smooth it
00:09:27
out and it's safe because it's all
00:09:28
acrylic based there you go let's speed
00:09:33
up the drying process
00:09:34
good old hairdryer alright now that's
00:09:39
your eye what I like to do because some
00:09:41
of the deeper holes once you do this
00:09:42
this stuff shrinks a little bit so once
00:09:44
again I like to just do one more pass on
00:09:47
it and do a this is kind of like because
00:09:53
it's going to shrink a little bit in
00:09:54
spot size can I prevent that from
00:09:56
happening let's put one more coat on
00:10:01
again a little wet finger on this guy
00:10:03
again this is smooth the edges of it
00:10:06
okay round two with the hairdryer
00:10:11
alright now this is my second coat with
00:10:13
the quick seal went ahead got it nice
00:10:18
dry I'm going to go and seal the foam
00:10:20
now all of people are thinking once you
00:10:22
sandal this and get it hold back in heat
00:10:25
seal it and the answer is no do not
00:10:27
because if you go to hit put heat back
00:10:29
on this all that work you've done on the
00:10:31
seam will just open right back up
00:10:33
there's probably a little weird spots
00:10:35
are not glued around and perfected you
00:10:37
put a heat gun to this the sealant to
00:10:39
kind of seal it it's just going to open
00:10:41
things back up so once your heat seal it
00:10:43
and you do all this that's it no more
00:10:45
heat so what I do the seal it now it's
00:10:49
got my old modge podge and a sponge
00:10:50
brush here and I'm definitely put tool
00:10:53
tip on this but for the base coat I want
00:10:56
to definitely do a modge podge because
00:10:58
it says I'm not going to hit it with a
00:10:59
heat gun to seal it I still want to seal
00:11:01
the foam
00:11:02
just give it a basic thin coat to close
00:11:03
off the foam
00:11:04
so we're just good to a nice thin coat
00:11:07
the much punch okay got my one thin coat
00:11:10
of Mod Podge because I can speed up a
00:11:12
little bit with my hairdryer alright
00:11:16
there it is the Mod Podge is all nice
00:11:18
and dry and seal it up and ready to go
00:11:19
now my next step is plastic depth tada
00:11:25
there it is look at that you what you're
00:11:27
looking at is four coats of plastic dip
00:11:29
and if you look it's almost invisible I
00:11:32
can barely see it I mean grant if you
00:11:34
look closely but it's got a nice sheen
00:11:36
to it and on this particular part
00:11:38
granted I could have put more parts on
00:11:40
it for a shoulder piece but I didn't
00:11:41
want to do that this particular video
00:11:43
because I wanted to show you guys the
00:11:45
smoothness and what you can do by with
00:11:46
sanding so I got this guy and so my next
00:11:49
step after this is I'm going to take the
00:11:51
Australian primer give a thin coating of
00:11:54
that and then once that dries let me go
00:11:56
back in with some Montana Orange think a
00:11:59
butter color will be interesting to see
00:12:01
what this looks like once it's all
00:12:02
painted right so let's do that
00:12:05
and there it is tada
00:12:08
there's our shoulder piece agency
00:12:11
virtually seamless now we see virtually
00:12:14
seam because it's still kind of there
00:12:16
but for foam costume this is pretty darn
00:12:19
invisible this is what I like to do
00:12:20
people keep asking I hide my seams is
00:12:22
this the technique I use and granted
00:12:25
like I said it would have in more detail
00:12:26
in its but I want to keep this whole
00:12:27
thing smooth just to show you guys the
00:12:28
concept of how I go about minimizing my
00:12:31
seams bang there it is my smooth
00:12:36
shoulder piece you can sup look at that
00:12:38
right from here it looks virtually
00:12:40
seamless I mean of course up close I can
00:12:42
see it but on a costume in cosplay this
00:12:44
is perfect nice good clean seam so that
00:12:46
is my technique I do to make myself and
00:12:49
my seams virtually seamless also elected
00:12:52
guys if you are new to my channel don't
00:12:55
forget to subscribe and also people who
00:12:56
like me and ask me questions on my
00:12:58
thread below my youtube videos if you
00:13:01
don't subscribe to my channel I can't
00:13:03
respond to you are people I see people
00:13:05
writing all this stuff and I realize
00:13:06
that go to click on ER there's no way I
00:13:07
can reply and I realized because you
00:13:09
haven't subscribed if you can't
00:13:10
subscribe and have a simple question to
00:13:11
ask me be sure to subscribe so I can
00:13:14
back also nothing to please don't take
00:13:18
this the wrong way guys all my fans out
00:13:19
there I've been getting a lot of images
00:13:21
people send me costumes like the
00:13:22
predator or the Guyver are some crazy
00:13:24
helmets and from the video game I've
00:13:26
ever seen before in and say hey Ted I'm
00:13:27
going to make this how would I go about
00:13:28
doing that and I'm gonna make videos and
00:13:33
tutorials basically what I'm doing is
00:13:34
I'm teaching guys their techniques and
00:13:36
the skills in you to do what you can
00:13:38
with these techniques but I'm not going
00:13:39
to make each individual video for what
00:13:41
particular costume you guys want to do
00:13:43
I'm not going to walk you through every
00:13:45
step of everybody's own personal costume
00:13:47
I can't do it the costume buildings
00:13:51
problem solving and if you have a
00:13:52
constable to build that's your problem
00:13:54
and you can solve it the more you build
00:13:56
the better you guys get at it and you'll
00:13:57
be able to figure it out so I'm asking
00:14:00
and also full of people who built
00:14:02
amazing costumes and sent me pictures of
00:14:04
their finished pieces and show me what
00:14:06
they've done with my techniques is
00:14:07
amazing it and it makes me light up I
00:14:09
love it thank you so much that keeps
00:14:10
reminding me why I do it
00:14:12
know so for all you people out there
00:14:13
