This is another project to create a table with a unique feature.

So, we've decided to make the tabletop out of maplewood.

Its full name is ash-leaved maple.

This material looks pretty good, especially when you get a trunk with burls.

These trunks are pretty common. But most importantly, this tree grows in our area,

and this means it doesn't cost much, and we can improvise confidently.

We put these particular planks into the thermal drying device

and it gave the wood this nice color, after it dried. Then we debark it.

After an hour of debarking, we can run the wood through the marking gauge.

And yeah, you should do it in this particular sequence.

If you put wood in the marking gauge with the bark on, the blade will become dull very quick,

because bark contains a lot of sand, and it's killing the blade.

By the way, my marking gauge has 138 hard-alloy blades, and I don't wanna replace them,

that's why I debarked wood earlier.

In the end, after s few dozens of sessions

the 2 inch workpieces turned into 0,7 inch planks.

This is the gauge we need our tabletop to be.

Unfortunately, we haven't come up with a more humane way to process the wood.

The tabletop will be full-squared, the same goes to the whole table.

First, we lay out the composition and mark up the square,

and then, using the saw we cut along the marked lines.

The next stage is to process the edges using the brush to remove the remaining bark.

And now we've decided to do an experiment

and we paint the edge of the workpiece with white paint,

it's not a thick layer, just to make a slight gradient.

While the paint is drying, we can do some formwork.

Following a good tradition, we're gonna make it out of garbage.

In this case, it's gonna be scraps of laminated chipboard.

You just need to duct tape it properly. This is what we've doing.

And then we pour silicone here, and of course, we finger it around in the end.

When the filling is thin, I usually use the Art Eco compound.

Component A plus component B, A bit of blue and green dye,

In the manual, the manufacturer doesn't recommend to make a layer thicker than 0,3 inches.

Considering this, we've decided not to tempt fate, or the resin, so we'll do the filling in 2 stages.

The second stage is completely the same as the first one, I've told you about it already.

And in the end we apply some spray neutralizer.

Two days later, when it's all done, I get in the shot and remove the framework.

The next stage is to put the tabletop on a CNC machine to calibrate it.

In the end, we're gonna get a table with a sliding puzzle.

But to solve it, we need to draw a picture.

We're gonna use the CNC machine again for that.

We picked a more or less suitable picture quickly. This Japanese building.

And just 5 hours later, we made this picture using a thin blade.

Ans since the workpeice is still in the CNC tool,

we've decided to cut it into puzzle pieces this way,

to get 16 separate pieces.

To highlight the carving and relieve the picture,

we apply transparent mat varnish, and then black patina.

After that, we grind the tabletop. In the end, the patina is removed from the lop front layer,

but it's still in the deep carving, just as we planned.

While it dries, we can work on the legs and frame of the table.

I've been looking forward to create a multilayer panel picture for a long time,

and I decided to use it as the frame of the table in this project.

To do this, I need to cut out 6 separate element for each side,

The next stage is the paint job. To highlight the multilayer aspect as hard as we can,

we decided to paint each layer a bit darker than the previous one.

In the end we're gonna have a certain gradient, and the picture will look more solid.

When wood stain dries up, we can assemble the sandwich.

We're gonna do it using superglue, layer by layer.

To assemble the tabletop, we sawed these blocks.

We made a little groove in them, where we're gonna put plexiglass.

We cut out the piece we need, sanded it and painted it white.

This layer is gonna be used as a diffuser, because we're planning to illuminate the tabletop.
