things to do when visiting Ho Chi Minh City
Vietnam let's do it first up on the list is 00:00:39
Vin Pearl Landmark 81 here in Ho Chi Minh City
District One it is a hotel as well as a shopping 00:00:47
mall at the bottom and then it's also a tourist
attraction which allows you to go to the very 00:00:52
top or almost the very top as you can do here it
is an 81 story building standing at 461 meters 00:01:01
or 1513 feet tall it is the tallest building in
Ho Chi Minh City and the tickets cost around 220 00:01:10
000 Vietnamese Dong that's around 10 to 12 dollars
per person children are 150 000 I did stay at the 00:01:17
hotel it is a Marriott property and it was
reasonably priced and quite the experience 00:01:22
next up we're headed to Bui Vien Street this
is the party area in Ho Chi Minh City district 00:01:28
one for Saigon and just to clear it up Ho Chi
Minh city is the official name of this city 00:01:34
but people still call it Saigon in many places
you will notice which is the name for the city 00:01:39
before the war also known as Western Street as it pertains to Western culture with many Backpackers 00:01:46
and locals visiting this area it is a bit of
a wild party street so I wouldn't recommend 00:01:51
bringing kids here and if you're looking for a
bit more of a tame nightlife experience go check 00:01:56
out no Nguyễn Huệ walking Street here in the
center of district one known for its beautiful 00:02:02
architecture from the French colonial era as
well as new modern buildings it's got a very 00:02:07
bustling atmosphere as you can see at night time
especially on the weekends you can expect many 00:02:13
street performers while down here just be advised
that the street performers will expect a tip if 00:02:19
you take a picture with them also as we continue

coming down here it's very easy to get to right
there in the heart of district one next up we're 00:03:03
headed to explore some more history this here is
the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House with 500 seats 00:03:10
here it dates all the way back to 1898 when it
was inspired by the French third Republic so 00:03:17
it's quite a historical building here and worth
checking out now we're actually headed towards 00:03:22
the War Remnants Museum this is a great place
to go if you want to learn about the history 00:03:27
of the Vietnam war between the United States
and Vietnam Outdoors they have a lot of the 00:03:34
military equipment from the U.S Army and the
Air Force but then once you go inside you'll 00:03:40
also see there's some history about the weapons
that were used it was a very unfortunate War as 00:03:45
you will discover so it can be a bit heavy to take
in and just some quick history about the Vietnam 00:03:52
War it was North Vietnam versus South Vietnam
the Americans were occupying Saigon at the time 00:03:57
in support of the Southern Vietnamese during the
Civil War the War lasted around 20 years and the 00:04:04
northern Vietnamese ended up winning the war and
Saigon fell and became called Ho Chi Minh City00:04:16
that was his tiger cages what happened here 00:04:20

walk out of here really feeling a 00:05:45
lot of Sorrow for the people in Vietnam but
they had to endure during that war that was00:05:53
no it's whole eye opening experience let's hope
that never happens again now here we are at the 00:06:01
Independence Palace this here is where nuang Van
Theo who was the former president of Vietnam it 00:06:08
was the home and workplace of the former president
during this from 1967 to 1975 you can do a guided 00:06:15
tour with a headset as you're going through here
you will learn about many different aspects of 00:06:21
how Vietnam was being run at the time where
they had important meetings and you'll also 00:06:26
come across the presidential office and even the
war room where military strategists would meet 00:06:33
this is the national Securities Council
chamber you can see the maps here this 00:06:37
is where the President of Vietnam
used to meet with American generals 00:06:41
to talk about how they would fight against the
North Vietnamese and one of the most convenient 00:06:47
ways to actually get around to all these museums
in district one of Saigon is on a motorbike as 00:06:52
you can see I was just taking a motorbike
from location to location and you can do 00:06:56
most of this just in one day you can rent your own
motorbike or just hire a grab driver to take you 00:07:02
around like I did yeah so if you're looking
for a great massage come to win new here on 00:07:10
downtown area of Ho Chi Minh City I went with the
foot massage combo that includes neck and shoulder 00:07:18
now here we are at the Jade Emperor Pagoda this
is a Buddhist temple built in 1909 it actually was 00:07:25
built in honor of the Taoist God the Jade Emperor
or King Of Heaven as it's known it's also a pagoda 00:07:33
for people who believe in Confucianism this is
a free activity and now what we're going to do 00:07:39
is do some shopping here at the Ben Thanh Market you
can pretty much get anything you could possibly 00:07:44
need what I mean by that is you could arrive in
Ho Chi Minh City with nothing but the clothes on 00:07:50
your back and you can go to the Ben Thanh Market
here and end up getting everything from socks 00:07:55
boxers shorts shirts hats shoes everything you
could possibly need right here including cologne 00:08:02
and it's going to be negotiable when it comes to
the pricing and as I was told by my motorcycle 00:08:07
driver never accept the first price usually
counter offer and then haggle a bit in between so 00:08:14
if they tell you that something is 500 000 dong
you can offer 250 000 dong and then maybe settle 00:08:22
somewhere in between 250 and 500 000 sometimes you
can even get them down to as low as half off their 00:08:29
original asking price and to get them to take that
you would just simply start walking away and the 00:08:34
next thing you know they say okay okay just a
frame of reference about the currency one US 00:08:40
dollar equals twenty four thousand five hundred
dong that's Vietnamese Dong that's the national 00:08:46
currency they use here the items you will see here
they are mock copies these are not authentic real 00:08:54
Gucci or stucy these are what you would consider
to be Grade B copies for the most part they're 00:09:00
not even really grade A copies because a grade
a copy is just as good as the original so these 00:09:06
are not going to be just as good as the original
so keep that in mind when negotiating the price 00:09:11
so this is what I got at the market I
checked my card it came out to around a 00:09:16
hundred dollars total so I got a Stussy
shirt a Michael Jordan college jersey 00:09:22
this is stitched on New Era hat a Louis
Vuitton shirt this Vietnam shirt another 00:09:30
Saigon export beer shirt Nike shorts swim trunks
and then a Lionel Messi look at this messy Jersey00:09:44
nice now let's talk about some of the local
food here in Ho Chi Minh City and of course if 00:09:50
you love Pho here's one of the best restaurants
buwang this is a combo phob with beef meatballs 00:09:57
and steak flank this is a look at what is called
crispy pork and the sauce that goes along with it 00:10:03
and here we have some delicious baby back ribs
in a sauce these were really tasty and then of 00:10:09
course there's plenty of street food this here
is a look at Bahn Mi which is a baguette French 00:10:15
style bread kind of crispy toast and then the
filler is usually something like a meat Patty 00:10:21
or chicken or pork very delicious with some
veggies in this case he added a fried egg but 00:10:27
yes street food in Vietnam is very popular with
tourists so consider doing that but be careful 00:10:34
because that's how you can get some bubble guts
and to be honest I mostly ate fought at least 00:10:40
once a day they have the chicken Pho or the beefa
and I would even order it for room service in my 00:10:45
room next up we're actually headed to the Sky
Deck here this is a 360 degree view of Ho Chi 00:10:52
Minh City's second largest building it used
to be the largest until they built Landmark 00:10:57
81 tickets to go up here are around ten dollars
this is probably your more convenient Sky Deck 00:11:04
that you will find because landmarks a bit
further out of district one than this one 00:11:09
now here we are at Chinatown also known as cholon
now it is difficult to get here quite a ways out 00:11:16
of the city I would say you're going to expect
to drive for 20 minutes outside of district one 00:11:21
before you get here and it is difficult to find
but there is a market that's worth checking out 00:11:26
as well but it is considered a very culturally
Rich area I will be honest I got lost my first 00:11:33
time here it's mostly a place to do some shopping
and also some food is going to be around here 00:11:39
next up we're actually headed back to district
one this is the post office a very historical 00:11:43
place and it really has become famous because of
its architecture it's a mix between neoclassical 00:11:49
European and then some Asian architecture so
that's really what has made this place famous 00:11:55
so if you want to see that come here they've got
a souvenir shop if you look right behind me here 00:12:00
this is called book Street let's go inside in
a day and age when Kindle and other ebooks 00:12:05
are popular a book Street like this so vibrant
and full of many different in books is actually 00:12:11
a refreshing site to see so if you love reading
you love books definitely come down here to book 00:12:16
street now here we are at Central Park this is
right next to the VIN Pearl where the landmark 00:12:21
81 is and it's on the Saigon River but there's
many different Parks so I would say definitely 00:12:26
do some exploring around the city parks there's
also the Tao Dan park now here we are at the Notre 00:12:32
Dame Cathedral although while I was here it was
under renovation hopefully when you arrive it's 00:12:37
completed the renovation now here we are at the
bend knee Street Food Market this place has a wide 00:12:43
variety of street food really a One-Stop shop for
all the food needs that you could possibly want I 00:12:48
stopped here around five o'clock in the afternoon
early evening and I ordered two beers hung out and 00:12:54
then walked around decided what I wanted to eat
because there is quite a bit of variety it does 00:12:59
remind me of a food hawker stalls that you'll
find in Singapore so that's what you're going 00:13:04
to expect it was raining when I was here also
and the awning and the Rooftop at actually kept 00:13:11
me dry so that's a good thing it is an outdoor
Market but they do have shade and protection 00:13:17
from the rain they have fun they have seafood
as you can see a whole variety of shellfish 00:13:23
and everything coming out of the South China Sea
and the surrounding Seas they also have barbecue00:13:31
now here we are going back to the city center
of Saigon this here is the Ho Chi Minh statue 00:13:37
government building area if you want to come here
and take a picture this is typically where people 00:13:42
get their Ho Chi Minh City picture right next
to the government building here and the statue 00:13:48
Vietnam is popular for the self-care salons where
you have shaving straight razor shaving you also 00:13:56
have facial massages for men and women also nail
salons so a lot of people come here they get the 00:14:03
whole full service that includes the head neck
shoulders foot haircut everything in between and 00:14:10
for a relaxing massage like this expect to pay
anywhere between 400 000 Vietnamese Dong to 700 00:14:16
800 000 Vietnamese Dong for one hour and that's
just the average rate across the city after a 00:14:23
long day sightseeing a massage like this really
comes in crucial next up this is the Saigon zoo 00:14:30
and Botanical Garden it's actually really cheap
it's only around like two dollars to get in here 00:14:36
so if you want to go see some animals you can come
on over and check this place out maybe read some 00:14:41
reviews online about it it's not a very new Zoo
it's quite old but I found it interesting for 00:14:48
the Botanical Garden but there are animals
around here you will see hippos rhinoceros 00:14:53
orangutans other monkeys so they've got a lot of
active animals here but it's a bit older so don't 00:15:01
expect the new enclosure kind of experience and
right next door to the Botanical Garden is the 00:15:08
history museum you can learn all about the history
of Vietnam the people it's kind of like a natural 00:15:13
history museum dating all the way back to the
early days so you can learn a lot here the only 00:15:19
thing is they don't have air conditioning in here
it's mostly ceiling fans it's a very old building 00:15:25
but it might be worth it for some of you
who want to learn and the ticket price 00:15:30
is very affordable it's 30 000 Vietnamese
Dong which is around a dollar and 15 cents 00:15:36
okay so here we are at the Cu Chi tunnels this is
a tunnel system that goes many different miles 00:15:42
around the area of Cu Chi and it was actually
established by the Communists to advance into 00:15:48
Saigon where the Americans were we're gonna
go inside here and explore they even have a 00:15:52
shooting range in here where you can actually sit
in a U.S Jeep and shoot M16s and machine guns now 00:15:58
this is about an hour and a half Drive outside of
Saigon and I would say if you're into the Vietnam 00:16:04
War history you should come out here and here
you'll find all sorts of different booby traps 00:16:08
that were used also tunnels very interesting how
they were camouflaging into the actual jungle the 00:16:16
tunnel system was so protected by the camouflage
that they were using that you will see bomb holes 00:16:22
all around the area where B-52 bombers would fly
over and carpet bomb the area trying to destroy 00:16:29
the tunnels and the American soldiers that would
be walking through that jungle would often times 00:16:34
encounter one of these booby traps perhaps and
wow that really looks painful it wasn't just 00:16:40
bamboo it eventually became metal and then they
had some other equipment that you could check out 00:16:44
like how to make rice wine and rice sheets or
rice paper which is used for the spring rolls 00:16:52
that you guys eat oftentimes when you're at
a Vietnamese restaurant and even though the 00:16:56
Americans had bigger guns and more technology
they still found it very difficult to compete 00:17:01
against the Vietnamese who knew the land so
well and had all of these different jungle 00:17:07
tactics called guerrilla warfare and the locals
mostly lived off of this tapioca potato [Music] 00:17:16
so now we are here at the mighty Mekong River
we're going on a boat tour I showed up late in 00:17:22
the afternoon because we were coming from the
kuchi tunnels over to the Mekong and it was 00:17:26
about a two hour drive from the tunnels to here
so I ended up having to get a private boat and 00:17:34
that's because they stopped all of the group tours
but it's okay at least with a private boat tour 00:17:39
I got to go where I wanted skip what I wanted and
add something else that I wanted so that was good 00:17:44
but the price was around 1 million
seven hundred thousand Vietnamese dong 00:17:50
and the first stop here was
actually the honey bee farm00:17:59
you can actually hold these uh
honeybees here they say they're 00:18:04
friendly bees no uh that's banana Ginger
and honey ah okay it's like a banana chip00:18:31
delicious and then from here we went over to
the fruit farm where I gotta sample lots of 00:18:38
local fruit and some of the fruit that they
gave me was watermelon of course then dragon 00:18:43
fruit rambutan they also have lonzones and
a few different other fruits like banana 00:18:50
also available breadfruit Jackfruit so if you
haven't tried the local fruits this is really 00:18:57
a great place to get a taste of the variety
they have two different types of coconut they 00:19:02
have the water coconut and then they have
the land coconut and they put it together 00:19:06
into a drink you drink the coconut water from
the land coconut and eat the water coconut 00:19:13
and now here we are doing a canoe along the
Mekong Canal this is actually a natural Canal 00:19:20
I thought it was man-made at first but really
cool the jungle definitely uh overruns this 00:19:27
area and you really feel like you're back in time
when you're doing this canoe ride here and they 00:19:34
say here the people that live off the Mekong will
never go hungry because there's so much abundance 00:19:39
in fruits and vegetation and just foraging that
takes place here there's really a lot of different 00:19:46
foods that you can find around the Mekong and of
course a wide variety of fish are in this River00:20:00

and there you do see some crocodiles now I asked
them if crocodiles are in the Mekong River because 00:20:11
I saw people swimming in there and as you can see
it is quite Brown and murky but they said no but 00:20:18
sometimes the crocodiles from the crocodile farm
get out I don't know they say they're some people 00:20:24
say there are crocodiles in there and others
say there isn't but then I say well where do 00:20:28
the crocodiles live if they don't live here
in the Mekong right so I wouldn't swim in the 00:20:33
Mekong River and then over on Phoenix Island they
actually have the coconut Temple and this was a 00:20:39
religion that came about but ended up becoming
banned because it was so radical they found 00:20:46
so now you just visit here it's kind of like a
museum of the old religion from the 70s thank you00:21:08

and here you have the coconut Island Resort you
can easily stay here if you wanted right along the 00:21:16
banks of the Mekong River really a cool place they
also have the coconut Temple hello these Bungalows 00:21:26
are around thirty dollars a night if you wanted
to look it up it's called Homestay Cocoa Island 00:21:31
and don't expect nightlife right here on this
island right here in the middle of the Mekong 00:21:37
River but it's a cool little Retreat to hang out
at if you want to get some remote activity along 00:21:44
the old Temple here at Coconut Island if you
