00:00:25
hello everybody
00:00:27
welcome back jiu-jitsu mm here today I'm
00:00:31
coming at you with an interesting video
00:00:32
today I want to talk about making a
00:00:35
penny can stove but I'm gonna take that
00:00:39
a little step further and I'm gonna make
00:00:41
a penny can stove on steroids
00:00:44
stay with me hope you enjoy okay folks
00:00:48
let's get started first thing I want to
00:00:50
talk about is the type of tin cans that
00:00:53
I would normally use this is the kind of
00:00:55
can that I use for my standard penny
00:00:58
cans stove but today we're gonna use
00:01:00
these Arizona tea cans I like these
00:01:04
because if you look at the diameter of
00:01:06
them they are a little bit larger in
00:01:09
diameter and the aluminum that they make
00:01:11
these cans with is slightly thicker so
00:01:15
that's where I'm coming across with the
00:01:17
term of soda can penny can stove on
00:01:21
steroids so again I'm gonna start with
00:01:23
two Arizona tea cans I'm gonna need a
00:01:27
pair a pair of scissors a small block of
00:01:30
wood a pushpin and of course I need a
00:01:37
penny this Penny's 1964 and if you if
00:01:42
you get your penny make sure that your
00:01:44
penny is nineteen eighty two or older
00:01:48
don't get anything from 1983 to a
00:01:52
current penny because in 1983 they
00:01:56
started taking the majority of the
00:01:58
copper out and making them majority of
00:02:01
the penny being zinc so make sure it's
00:02:05
at least nineteen eighty-two
00:02:07
I'm also gonna need today a small pair
00:02:11
of needle nose pliers some fuel and
00:02:14
we're gonna use our fuel we're gonna use
00:02:16
heat today you can also use denatured
00:02:19
alcohol and another fuel that you can
00:02:22
use is 91% isopropyl alcohol or higher
00:02:27
and last but not least I have a small
00:02:29
pipe wrap installation kit or more
00:02:33
specifically some fiberglass insulation
00:02:35
now we're not going to need
00:02:36
this much I just picked this up for like
00:02:39
3 bucks at my local hardware store so
00:02:41
we're gonna need a little bit of
00:02:42
insulation now let's go ahead and get
00:02:44
started ok to start this stove the first
00:02:47
thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take my
00:02:48
block of wood and I'm gonna take my
00:02:50
first can and I'm going to set it right
00:02:52
next to that block of wood and I'm gonna
00:02:55
hold my push pin right here and I'm
00:02:59
going to slowly spin this can around
00:03:02
what my plan is right now is I'm trying
00:03:05
to score a line in the diameter of the
00:03:08
can and it's not that I'm gonna use the
00:03:12
push pin to cut it I'm just marking a
00:03:14
line if you don't have a push pin or
00:03:17
should I say if you'd rather use like a
00:03:19
sharpie or something you can use that
00:03:21
for this step as well but I like using
00:03:24
the push pin so you can see I have the
00:03:26
line all the way around I'm gonna do
00:03:29
this to both cans just like so I want to
00:03:51
just check and see that that line is
00:03:53
scored all the way around looks good
00:03:58
okay now what I want to do is I want to
00:04:01
take one of the cans and I want to put a
00:04:03
hole right in the center of the can with
00:04:07
my push pin and I'm gonna use my little
00:04:09
block of wood for the lack of a better
00:04:11
term as a hammer like a little hammer or
00:04:16
mallet and I'm gonna make about five
00:04:19
holes here
00:04:27
and you can see that I'm spinning the
00:04:30
pushpin to release it just kind of
00:04:38
pushing that baby in nothing too
00:04:45
significant you can see that I have a
00:04:46
little number five like a dice five now
00:04:51
I'm gonna take my small pointer that I
00:04:55
was using and hopefully pop out this
00:04:57
Center hole and make it a little bit
00:04:58
bigger so I'm hitting it with my block
00:05:00
of wood not too hard I don't want to go
00:05:06
too crazy with it so I'm just making
00:05:10
this center hole a little bit bigger so
00:05:12
that my fuel can go in you might need to
00:05:14
push your pin through the holes again
00:05:16
you know because after filling that hole
00:05:18
little bigger it might make those holes
00:05:20
smaller but that's what you want in the
00:05:23
middle at this point I'm going to start
00:05:26
with my holes around the outside edge
00:05:28
now you can see that the can has a
00:05:30
little rim right there and that right
00:05:33
there where that pin falls that's where
00:05:34
I want to start putting my holes so I'm
00:05:38
going to use my little hammer because
00:05:41
like I said these cans are a little
00:05:42
thicker I'm gonna make four holes to
00:05:48
start just go right about there right in
00:06:01
the center between these two something
00:06:04
like that these are gonna be our ports
00:06:20
in which our flames are going to come
00:06:23
out
00:06:27
so there's my first four holes now what
00:06:31
I'm gonna do is I'm going to make four
00:06:32
more holes right in the center of all
00:06:34
these holes so I'm going to put one
00:06:36
there one there one there and one there
00:06:39
so let me go ahead and do that I'm
00:06:48
trying to do this video fairly quickly I
00:06:51
don't want to bore you guys and I don't
00:06:52
want the vid to be too long so bear with
00:06:55
me I'm just doing my best to try to find
00:07:19
the center between all the first now we
00:07:24
have a total of eight holes now I'm
00:07:26
going to do that one more time I'm going
00:07:28
to go to the center between all of these
00:07:30
holes so this will be number nine right
00:07:32
here there's nine ten coming up right
00:07:48
here I'm having to use this wood log
00:07:56
eleven because the aluminum on this is a
00:07:59
little thicker than that regular soda
00:08:01
can twelve is going to go right here
00:08:07
[Music]
00:08:09
thirteen fourteen
00:08:29
fifteen right there
00:08:34
[Music]
00:08:37
and last one will be sixteen right here
00:08:41
this if you if you notice this is the
00:08:45
same amount of holes that I use in my
00:08:47
standard soda can penny can still 16
00:08:53
holes see that now we're all done with
00:08:57
our pushpin for now and our block of
00:08:59
wood we're gonna put those back together
00:09:00
and just set them aside okay from here
00:09:06
I'm gonna take my scissors and I'm gonna
00:09:08
find the line that I made I'm gonna go
00:09:10
up towards the top of the can and just
00:09:12
kind of cut just a big cut I'm gonna go
00:09:16
fairly close to the line
00:09:17
I'm just doing a grill right now nothing
00:09:25
too crazy there without a side and from
00:09:30
here now I'm gonna do my fine cutting
00:09:32
right along that line
00:09:33
all the way around this cut needs to be
00:09:35
really straight so take your time on
00:09:39
this cut try to make it as clean as you
00:09:42
can you don't want a bunch of jagged
00:09:44
edges on this cut is if you have that
00:09:47
then you'll have the possibility of your
00:09:50
can splitting okay so there you have it
00:09:53
we're gonna do the same thing with this
00:09:56
can there's our line we're gonna go up
00:09:58
towards the top of the can just cut kind
00:10:01
of crazy
00:10:10
what water slide looks like this had
00:10:13
some tea inside or nothing so let's go
00:10:15
make our nice precise cut now so we use
00:10:19
the push pin just to mark the cam and if
00:10:26
you're viewing this video and you want
00:10:27
to follow this video you can do this
00:10:29
with a standard soda can okay the
00:10:31
techniques don't change or anything like
00:10:33
that main thing is you want everything
00:10:39
nice and clean so I have two pieces that
00:10:42
are equal one of them has the vent holes
00:10:45
in the top and the other one does at
00:10:49
this point I'm gonna take my needle nose
00:10:52
pliers and I'm gonna find an imaginary
00:10:55
line on them it'd be nice if I had like
00:10:59
okay you can see where the discoloration
00:11:00
ends about right there or something so
00:11:03
that's I'm gonna try to bite it about
00:11:05
the same spot every time and I'm just
00:11:07
gonna kind of tweak it go up an inch
00:11:09
tweak it go up ninj tweak it and I'm
00:11:14
giving it these little these little
00:11:16
tweaks and I'm going the same depth down
00:11:18
on the bite we're just going up an inch
00:11:24
each time it doesn't have to be an inch
00:11:26
exactly it's just give or take a little
00:11:28
bit doesn't have to be perfect or
00:11:30
anything so when I'm done I have
00:11:33
something that looks like this the
00:11:36
reason I need this is because when I put
00:11:40
the pieces together I want it to fit
00:11:42
nice and easy and this helps facilitate
00:11:45
that okay now is the portion of the top
00:11:52
of this project that we want to take
00:11:54
some fiberglass insulation so I'm gonna
00:11:58
open your stuff up and I'm just gonna
00:12:03
get a little bit I'm gonna try to see I
00:12:07
don't know maybe something like
00:12:10
something like that baby I'm just gonna
00:12:15
cut that stuff off and I'm gonna pack
00:12:18
this down inside of this bottom can I
00:12:20
might have gotten a little much but
00:12:22
we'll see here in a minute so I'm just
00:12:25
kind of rolling that stuff in I'm just
00:12:29
gonna pack this stuff right down in the
00:12:31
can what this is gonna do is this is
00:12:34
going to serve as a wick so that when we
00:12:37
put our stove together when we put our
00:12:38
liquid in there it's gonna soak that
00:12:41
liquid up so that if we were to drop the
00:12:43
snow over knock it over we're not gonna
00:12:45
have our fuel going everywhere
00:12:47
now I'm gonna put this upper part with
00:12:50
the vents right on top and I'm gonna
00:12:52
slowly squeeze now be careful right here
00:12:54
if you're got your thumb here and if it
00:12:56
was to slip loose you could this upper
00:12:59
can could cut your thumb so be real
00:13:01
careful in this step I like to come back
00:13:04
to my block of wood and just kind of
00:13:07
easily tap that thing into place doesn't
00:13:20
have to be anything crazy just like this
00:13:22
see that got a nice nice fit don't have
00:13:31
to tap it all crazy or anything like
00:13:33
that we just want to make sure that
00:13:35
everything is straight so that we have
00:13:37
the same height on both sides it looks
00:13:39
like this sides a little bit high so I'm
00:13:42
gonna just tap a little more just trying
00:13:45
to look I'm looking here and I'm kind of
00:13:48
measuring and looking and just
00:13:49
visualizing it now if you have a little
00:13:51
bit of excess metal just kind of rotate
00:13:54
it over with your thumb we're just kind
00:13:58
of bending it in and that'll just kind
00:14:01
of seal up around the bottom of the can
00:14:04
then take your wooden block and just
00:14:07
kind of use that as a tool to kind of
00:14:12
help thin that stuff around what this
00:14:14
will do is this will help seal the
00:14:16
bottom up and it'll keep the cans stove
00:14:19
together
00:14:27
now my friends is our penny cans stove
00:14:30
on steroids okay you can see that I put
00:14:35
an old piece of tile from when I did the
00:14:38
tile in my house I had a little scrap
00:14:40
piece I'm just continuing to fill it up
00:14:44
I'm using that tile as a barrier cuz I
00:14:47
obviously don't want to burn my table
00:14:52
now you're probably wondering what can I
00:14:56
do to put this flame out when I'm done
00:14:58
if you have another can the same size
00:15:01
you can take your scissors while you're
00:15:03
waiting on that fuel to soak in and at
00:15:07
the bottom of the can you can see
00:15:08
there's a little where the paint ends
00:15:10
just cut it right along that line crazy
00:15:15
first just like I did earlier I'm gonna
00:15:21
do that to remove the bulk of the
00:15:23
aluminum now I'm gonna just cut right
00:15:26
down like I said where the paint ends
00:15:29
get about as close to that as you can
00:15:32
this doesn't have to be crazy precise or
00:15:35
anything like that what we're doing is
00:15:40
we're building a little top that goes
00:15:44
over it
00:15:45
and this'll this will help for when we
00:15:48
want to put the stove out you can see
00:15:54
that it's a little bit more difficult to
00:15:56
cut this high up because we're right on
00:15:58
that curve but just take your time and
00:16:02
you'll get through it the aluminum feels
00:16:05
to be a little bit thicker here too so
00:16:11
you have something like this it's gonna
00:16:13
rest right on top of the stove like that
00:16:15
and that's gonna put the flame out so
00:16:17
we'll keep that nearby and we'll
00:16:19
continue to fill if you spill a little
00:16:22
bit of fuel all around the base of the
00:16:25
stove that's okay you notice that it's not
00:16:27
taking any more fuel that tells us it's
00:16:30
full
00:16:33
take my rag and I'm gonna clean any
00:16:35
excess that's around but if there's
00:16:37
excess around here I want to keep that
00:16:39
that's good that's good fuel that's
00:16:41
gonna help prime this stove let's go
00:16:44
ahead and light this thing I can feel
00:16:49
the heat even though you can't see it
00:16:51
it's lit I'm gonna kill these lights
00:16:52
behind me kill this overhead
00:17:11
okay and I got it going let's go ahead
00:17:13
and throw our penny right on the top
00:17:15
what that penny is gonna do is it's
00:17:17
gonna close the alcohols ability or the
00:17:22
fuels ability to exhaust through that
00:17:25
hole and the result of that is to create
00:17:27
pressure which is going to help us burn
00:17:31
now this stove is in the priming step
00:17:34
right now once this these flames and
00:17:37
things around the bottom here go out the
00:17:40
stove will be primed and it'll be ready
00:17:41
to go I'm gonna lower this camera angle
00:17:43
here for you guys see you can see that
00:17:46
how quickly that stove has primed it's
00:17:50
already primed then it's pretty much
00:17:51
ready pretty much set puts out a great
00:17:56
flame
00:18:42
well everybody I want to say thank you
00:18:44

00:18:47
Arizona tea can penny can stove I hope

00:19:10
now get out there and make yourself a
00:19:12
penny can stove using an Arizona tea can
00:19:15
it's awesome because the aluminum's
00:19:18
thicker and they they seem to prime a
00:19:20
little faster again one more thing not
00:19:22
to talk too much but the insulation is
00:19:26
optional you don't have to have that it
00:19:28
just Prime's faster if you do thanks for
00:19:31
watching bye bye now
