Через Тихвин проходила единственная ветка железной дороги, по которой грузы и подкрепление шли к Ладоге, а дальше в Ленинград. Город уже несколько месяцев находился в блокаде. Чтобы помешать противнику создать двойное кольцо блокады, Ставка Верховного Главнокомандования разработала план Тихвинской наступательной операции. Главный удар наносила из района Тихвина 4-я армия с задачей соединиться в районе Киришей с войсками 54-й армии и в р-не Грузино с войсками 52-й армии. Руководство операцией Ставка поручила Кириллу Мерецкову. 10 ноября части перешли в наступление. Первыми ударили войска Новгородской оперативной армейской группы. Это был вспомогательный удар с целью отвлечь противника и захватить плацдармы на левом берегу Волхова. Тяжелые бои шли почти месяц. Только 9 декабря войска 4-й армии освободили Тихвин. В ходе дальнейшего преследования противник вынужден был оставить город и отойти к Волхову. Фактически это означало потерю контроля над железной дорогой через Тихвин к Ладожскому озеру.
