00:00:00
what's up guys it's brad from light
00:00:01
architect in this video i'm going to be
00:00:03
sharing how you can use a vector pass to
00:00:05
simulate motion blur in the compositor
00:00:07
in order to enhance some of your shots
00:00:09
in the post-production process now a lot
00:00:11
of the times i don't use a vector blur
00:00:13
in my post-production process and i just
00:00:15
use the normal motion blur built inside
00:00:17
a blender however it does take a little
00:00:19
bit more time to render out those frames
00:00:20
and vector blur can offer some fairly
00:00:22
good results depending on the scene you
00:00:24
are trying to create i'm going to go
00:00:26
through a few examples of when it works
00:00:27
for me and when it didn't based on some
00:00:29
current projects i'm working on right
00:00:31
now to give you an idea of what vector
00:00:33
blur is how you can use it and when you
00:00:35
should just check that standard motion
00:00:37
blur checkbox inside a blender in order
00:00:39
to get a little bit more of a realistic
00:00:41
result now before we get too far into
00:00:42
the process there is an advantage of
00:00:44
using vector blur rather than just
00:00:46
checking the checkbox for motion blur
00:00:48
instead of blender when you check the
00:00:49
checkbox inside of blender you're baking
00:00:51
that data into your render and you can't
00:00:53
change that data in the compositing
00:00:55
process so you're getting a more
00:00:56
realistic motion blur but in order to
00:00:58
dial it back or adjust it significantly
00:01:00
you're going to have to re-render the
00:01:02
frames that you want so this is the
00:01:03
advantage of using vector blur and i'll
00:01:05
go through some of the disadvantages as
00:01:07
well but anyways guys this is a project
00:01:09
i've been working on recently and it's a
00:01:11
little bit of a work in progress here i
00:01:13
just have some live action footage that
00:01:15
i'm adding a helicopter some mist some
00:01:17
snow and just kind of grunging up the
00:01:19
environment a bit and then i'm also
00:01:21
adding this kind of spotlight effect
00:01:22
hitting this live action train here
00:01:24
which is a pretty cool effect you can
00:01:26
see that the spotlight is actually
00:01:28
interacting with the live action shot
00:01:30
and i'm going to make a video on all of
00:01:32
these different concepts in the future
00:01:33
as well as breaking this shot down once
00:01:35
i complete it however for this specific
00:01:37
video talking about vector blur i just
00:01:39
want to talk about the blur on the
00:01:41
helicopter blades here so in the
00:01:42
compositing process i just wanted to see
00:01:44
if adding some vector blur in the
00:01:46
compositor would be as good as using the
00:01:49
motion blur checkbox here which bakes
00:01:51
the motion blur into the data of the
00:01:53
render and gives a more realistic result
00:01:55
and as you can see here i'll go ahead
00:01:57
and pull up the render when we checked
00:01:59
that motion blur checkbox and you can
00:02:01
see that the motion blur on the actual
00:02:04
helicopter blades here is looking much
00:02:06
better in this example and i'll go ahead
00:02:08
and put them try to put them side by
00:02:10
side here if i can
00:02:12
try this there we go so you can see that
00:02:15
obviously this motion blur is a little
00:02:17
bit more believable in this composite
00:02:19
and that's because when you're using
00:02:20
vector blur is taking the movement of
00:02:22
the 3d object from frame to frame and
00:02:24
then rather than calculating the actual
00:02:26
3d lighting on the motion blur it's just
00:02:29
taking the vector data of the animation
00:02:32
and just copying this propeller blade
00:02:34
over and over again and just adding some
00:02:36
blur to it so it's a little tricky to
00:02:37
explain but essentially vector blur is
00:02:39
not taking the 3d lighting into account
00:02:41
it's just kind of emulating real motion
00:02:43
blur based on the movement of the
00:02:45
geometry of the 3d object and then the
00:02:47
singular sharp render here so based on
00:02:50
this example i'm definitely going to be
00:02:51
using the motion blur checkbox on this
00:02:54
specific composite but i just thought
00:02:56
i'd share this example with you guys
00:02:58
first before we get into how you can use
00:03:00
vector blur to enhance your shots
00:03:02
because a lot of the time it does work
00:03:03
really well and you can get away with
00:03:05
using it and save some time on your
00:03:07
renders all right guys so to finish off
00:03:09
this video i'm going to go to a project
00:03:10
that's a little bit simpler in order to
00:03:12
show how you can use vector blur in the
00:03:14
compositing process fairly effectively
00:03:16
so again like i said depending on your
00:03:18
shot it may or may not be effective so
00:03:20
it's just a matter of testing but the
00:03:22
rest of this video will show you how to
00:03:24
use it if you want to do so so this is
00:03:26
the example shot we're going to be
00:03:27
adding some blur to and as you can see
00:03:30
here it's the same live action shot that
00:03:32
i added that helicopter to but i've just
00:03:34
added some jets flying by our scene here
00:03:37
so as you can see here i just played
00:03:39
through our scene
00:03:40
just a little jet flyby moving pretty
00:03:43
quick but uh super simple animation so
00:03:46
we're going to add some vector blur to
00:03:48
these jets rather than using the uh
00:03:50
motion blur checkbox here so before we
00:03:52
get into the compositing process there
00:03:54
are a few things we have to do in order
00:03:56
to export the vector data effectively in
00:03:58
order to use the vector blur node so
00:04:01
what we have to do is for this view
00:04:03
layer containing our jet we have to go
00:04:05
to our view layer properties here and
00:04:07
you want to make sure that you're
00:04:08
exporting your combined beauty path your
00:04:10
z-pass as well as a vector pass and this
00:04:14
is going to give you all the passes
00:04:16
necessary in order to use the vector
00:04:18
blur node which is going to mimic real
00:04:20
world motion blur so go ahead and make
00:04:22
sure all of those are selected and then
00:04:24
now i'm just going to go to render and
00:04:26
render image and we'll get into the
00:04:28
compositing process
00:04:29
alright guys so here are our jets just
00:04:31
kind of slapped onto our footage here
00:04:34
and if we go ahead and close this and go
00:04:35
to our compositor this is our
00:04:37
compositing node setup super simple what
00:04:39
we have here so far is just our movie
00:04:42
clip then we have an alpha over node
00:04:43
where we have overlaid our jet layer on
00:04:46
top of our footage and then all of this
00:04:49
right here is just a bunch of color
00:04:50
correction that i've added to the final
00:04:52
shot and then everything is going to our
00:04:54
composite and viewer node so super
00:04:56
simple setup now let's add some vector
00:04:58
blur to these jets so i'll go ahead and
00:05:01
go to our render layers and again as i
00:05:03
mentioned just previously we want to
00:05:04
make sure we have a z depth a vector and
00:05:07
a beauty pass output of whatever layer
00:05:10
you want to add your vector blur to so
00:05:12
to add this vector blur what we have to
00:05:13
do is just press shift a and we'll go
00:05:15
ahead and go to search and then i'll
00:05:17
type vector
00:05:19
and as you can see here we have a vector
00:05:20
blur node which we will just go ahead
00:05:22
and drag right here so we'll take our
00:05:24
beauty pass and put it into our image
00:05:27
input of our vector blur node and then
00:05:29
as you can see here we also want to
00:05:31
input our z depth pass here and this is
00:05:33
so blender can calculate where to add
00:05:35
motion blur in 3d space so they're not
00:05:37
weird overlapping artifacts if the
00:05:39
geometry in your scene is very complex
00:05:41
so super important
00:05:43
to add the depth to the z input here and
00:05:46
then finally we want to add our vector
00:05:48
information to our speed input and as
00:05:51
you can see here our compositor is
00:05:53
working here you can see that now we
00:05:55
have some motion blur added to our shot
00:05:57
based on the movement of our jets here
00:05:59
now obviously this is way too much but
00:06:01
you can definitely see what is going on
00:06:03
here to get a better idea of
00:06:04
understanding what vector blur is doing
00:06:06
essentially it's just duplicating the
00:06:09
main render over and over and over again
00:06:11
across the path that the jet is moving
00:06:14
so again unlike the motion blur checkbox
00:06:16
where you're actually simulating motion
00:06:18
blur in a much more realistic way this
00:06:20
is just kind of duplicating the one
00:06:23
frame of data over a certain distance
00:06:25
here but we should be able to get this
00:06:27
to look pretty good as you can see we
00:06:28
have a variety of controls here to
00:06:30
affect our motion blur we have the
00:06:32
samples which kind of controls how much
00:06:34
your data can be duplicated over the
00:06:36
desired area so for example if we bring
00:06:38
samples down to something like 10 you
00:06:40
can kind of see what's happening here
00:06:42
much more easily it's just duplicating
00:06:44
that main render less times so the lower
00:06:47
you put this the easier it's going to be
00:06:48
to calculate however this vector blur is
00:06:51
already much faster to calculate than
00:06:53
the motion blur so i recommend just
00:06:54
increasing your samples until it looks
00:06:56
pretty good i'm going to try just maybe
00:06:58
64.
00:06:59
and that should look pretty nice you can
00:07:01
see it's kind of blending together a lot
00:07:03
nicer here especially at the edges now
00:07:05
obviously this motion blur is way too
00:07:07
intense for our shot here so to dial it
00:07:10
back we can just go to our blur input
00:07:12
here and bring it down to say 0.12
00:07:15
and there we go that's looking pretty
00:07:17
good pretty good amount of blur there
00:07:18
maybe 0.15
00:07:20
give it a little bit more and yeah
00:07:22
that's uh you know that's a good example
00:07:24
of how you can use motion blur if you're
00:07:25
getting any weird artifacting you can
00:07:27
change the minimum speed required for
00:07:30
the vector blur to be added as well as
00:07:31
the maximum threshold for the vector
00:07:33
blur to be added as well and another
00:07:35
thing you can experiment with is the
00:07:37
curved checked box here which just kind
00:07:39
of changes the way the motion blur is
00:07:41
interpolated so as you can see if i
00:07:42
check it i don't know if anything will
00:07:43
change in this specific example yeah not
00:07:45
much has changed here so i'm just going
00:07:47
to leave it off for this specific
00:07:49
example but yeah pretty uh you know
00:07:51
convincing motion blur we can obviously
00:07:54
color correct these jets as well to
00:07:55
bring them into our composite a bit
00:07:57
better so we can add of course you know
00:08:00
an rgb curves maybe bring down the
00:08:02
brightness a little bit so they're not
00:08:04
too bright that's looking a little nicer
00:08:06
maybe bring up the contrast a bit to
00:08:08
match our original shot you know little
00:08:10
tweaks like this can help make it a bit
00:08:12
better again it's a little bit of a slap
00:08:14
comp here but hopefully you get the idea
00:08:16
on how you can use motion blur i'm gonna
00:08:18
go ahead and duplicate this color
00:08:20
balance node and maybe just color
00:08:22
correct these jets to match our shot a
00:08:25
bit better you know something like that
00:08:26
it's not bad so obviously there's a lot
00:08:28
more we can do to blend these into our
00:08:30
environment i do have a tutorial on how
00:08:32
you can create a jet flyby effect so
00:08:34
i'll put a link to that in the
00:08:35
description below but hopefully you get
00:08:37
the idea on how you can use vector blur
00:08:39
in order to get a little bit more
00:08:40
realistic result i think this is a good
00:08:42
example of when you can use it i do have
00:08:45
an example of this shot rendered with
00:08:47
just the standard motion blur
00:08:50
using the check box here and it actually
00:08:52
didn't look nearly as good in my opinion
00:08:55
the motion blur was you know you can see
00:08:57
the edges here even though the motion
00:08:59
blur is technically more accurate it
00:09:01
didn't look as good to me obviously both
00:09:03
of these are very quick composites so we
00:09:04
could definitely make them both look
00:09:06
better but just an example of the render
00:09:09
with the motion blur checkbox selected
00:09:11
but anyways guys using vector blur is a
00:09:13
great way you can save time on your
00:09:15
renders as well as have more control in
00:09:17
your compositing process rather than
00:09:19
baking in that motion blur with the
00:09:20
check box inside of blender i hope this
00:09:22
video was helpful as always feel free
00:09:24
leave a comment in the comment section
00:09:25
below if you have any questions or
00:09:26
suggestions lots more videos and
00:09:28
tutorials coming very soon to our
00:09:29
channel so i'll see you next time
00:09:44
