00:00:00
so this is not something i was really
00:00:03
expecting to do but the amount of
00:00:04
amazing comments i received on my first
00:00:07
upload of this video has really pushed
00:00:09
me to come back and to take into account
00:00:11
a lot more of the deaths i failed to do
00:00:13
so originally
00:00:14
this means factoring in a much larger
00:00:16
percentage of death from not only the
00:00:18
civilian population but also importantly
00:00:20
trying to factor in the death from
00:00:22
wounds and diseases caused by war
00:00:24
something that i originally completely
00:00:26
omitted given that i was unable to
00:00:28
really find any sources at least in
00:00:30
english that would help me get to a
00:00:31
better understanding of such a number
00:00:33
for japan at this time
00:00:35
this resulted in my initial rough
00:00:36
estimate just consisting of battle
00:00:38
deaths on the field that we knew of and
00:00:41
not prolonged deaths as a result of
00:00:43
conflict now the original number i came
00:00:46
to in the end of my first upload for
00:00:48
this video was an estimate of around 335
00:00:51
000. a number which many of you
00:00:53
rightfully pointed out seemed a bit low
00:00:56
given that i was trying to account for
00:00:57
nearly 150 years of history you guys
00:01:00
were absolutely right to criticize that
00:01:02
number it is low and a large reason as
00:01:04
to why it was so low was because i was
00:01:06
only accounting for numbers we do have
00:01:08
documentation of and then using those
00:01:10
numbers to speculate on the rest
00:01:13
this is also once again why i originally
00:01:15
failed to account for more of the
00:01:16
civilian death and death caused by
00:01:18
disease and famine we just don't have a
00:01:20
lot of accurate data regarding those
00:01:22
numbers something which i will try to
00:01:24
account for better this time around
00:01:26
now this video will be a re-edit of the
00:01:29
original one so some parts will be
00:01:31
exactly the same as in my first attempt
00:01:33
yet other parts will be largely
00:01:34
different but the last thing i want to
00:01:36
bring up before we dive back in is just
00:01:39
some of the other comments i was seeing
00:01:40
on the original video comparing the
00:01:42
singokujidai to other major wars that
00:01:45
occurred largely in europe plenty of
00:01:47
which were even from wildly different
00:01:48
time periods while others like the 30
00:01:50
years war was a bit more comparable now
00:01:52
obviously there are a lot of great
00:01:54
comparisons to make when looking at
00:01:56
japan and europe throughout history but
00:01:59
it is extremely important to remember
00:02:01
that comparing militaries is something
00:02:03
that is often risky to do we need to
00:02:05
keep in mind that for a large portion of
00:02:07
the singuku period many samurai families
00:02:10
only had an army that consisted of
00:02:11
several hundred to several thousand
00:02:13
troops we don't start seeing larger
00:02:15
coalition samurai armies until much
00:02:18
later in the period because of this i
00:02:20
want to remind people that we often
00:02:22
cannot and should not compare fully
00:02:24
formed european kingdoms or empires to
00:02:27
that of individual samurai clans yet
00:02:30
with that said there is still a lot of
00:02:31
great things we do know from european
00:02:33
war which we can realistically take into
00:02:35
account for finding our new total here a
00:02:38
lot of which i completely steered clear
00:02:40
of the first time around as i was
00:02:43
hesitant on how much of european warfare
00:02:45
i should have factored in if at all
00:02:48
but with that said let's jump back in
00:02:50
and first start off by once again adding
00:02:52
up the numbers of casualties from major
00:02:54
battles that we do know
00:02:56
obviously it would be completely
00:02:58
impossible to know the exact number of
00:03:00
deaths for the period the time frame is
00:03:02
just too big and we don't have nearly
00:03:04
enough documentation or accurate numbers
00:03:06
to properly come anywhere near the
00:03:08
correct answer but given the information
00:03:10
we do have we can formulate an idea of
00:03:13
just how many may have died specifically
00:03:15
between 1477 and 1615
00:03:19
now i know some people like to say that
00:03:21
the sengakuchi dai really began back in
00:03:23
1467 at the start of the onin war
00:03:26
however i personally do not like to use
00:03:28
that start date because i view the
00:03:30
majority of the conflicts during that
00:03:31
time as a wider extension of the onion
00:03:34
war itself this is why i consider the
00:03:36
official start date of the sinkoku
00:03:38
period to be right when we consider the
00:03:39
owning war to have ended
00:03:42
so then with that said let's jump in and
00:03:45
start off by trying to figure out how
00:03:46
many battle deaths we can estimate
00:03:48
through the entirety of the period once
00:03:50
again i want to remind you that these
00:03:52
numbers are in no way exact and i
00:03:54
welcome anyone in the comments to come
00:03:56
forth with their own theorizing as to
00:03:58
how many deaths there may have been
00:04:01
also i need to mention that i'll be
00:04:02
primarily focusing on the battles that
00:04:04
occurred in japan and not during the
00:04:05
later invasion of korea the imjin war
00:04:08
but i will try to account for those
00:04:10
later as well
00:04:11
but right away one of the first issues
00:04:14
we come to is the documentation of
00:04:16
casualties the more famous period of the
00:04:18
single kujidai essentially starts around
00:04:20
the rise of nobunaga and his victory at
00:04:23
okejama in 1560. from that point on we
00:04:26
have a much more thorough depiction and
00:04:28
understanding of the battles that would
00:04:30
occur moving forward from the fourth
00:04:32
battle of kawanakajima in 1561 to the
00:04:35
battle of nagashino up through
00:04:37
sekigahara and later the sieges of osaka
00:04:40
it is from 1560 to 1615 that we see the
00:04:43
real height of the singuku period this
00:04:46
is the phase of the era that has become
00:04:47
the most storied throughout the years
00:04:50
but it makes things a bit difficult
00:04:51
because a lot of the earlier battles are
00:04:53
not as well recorded we have a lot of
00:04:55
detail into when they happened who they
00:04:57
were between and in many cases how many
00:04:59
soldiers were present however losses are
00:05:02
not always listed
00:05:03
and speaking of listed you may be
00:05:05
wondering what sources am i using to
00:05:07
calculate these numbers well being that
00:05:10
there is no mass database of sengoku
00:05:12
jidai battle deaths i'm unfortunately
00:05:14
forced to rely upon the numbers given on
00:05:16
sites like wikipedia however i have done
00:05:19
my best to not only review what sources
00:05:21
the wikipedia articles suggest but also
00:05:23
cross-reference the numbers with
00:05:25
whatever other finds i could dig up as
00:05:27
well as numbers i could find in some of
00:05:29
the various books i own
00:05:31
this is a challenging process and like i
00:05:33
said finding any true accurate number of
00:05:35
all the deaths would be impossible all
00:05:37
we can do is come to a rough estimate
00:05:40
so the first thing i want to do is try
00:05:42
to calculate the numbers we do know
00:05:44
numbers that i could find or in some
00:05:46
cases guess at due to what would have
00:05:48
been reasonable given surrounding
00:05:49
situations through this i have compiled
00:05:51
a list starting in 1555 with the battle
00:05:54
of miyajima from there it includes most
00:05:57
of the major battles of the period
00:05:58
moving forward the battle of okehizama
00:06:01
the battles of kawanakajima the battle
00:06:04
of anegawa the massacre at mount hee the
00:06:07
battle of mikatakahara the battle of
00:06:09
nagashino the battle of tereorigawa the
00:06:12
battle of yamazaki the battle of
00:06:14
shizugitake the battle of komaki
00:06:17
nakakute the first siege of ueda the
00:06:20
second siege of ueda the battle at the
00:06:23
kuisegawa the battle of sekigahara
00:06:26
and both the winter and summer sieges of
00:06:28
osaka
00:06:30
combining all the numbers i was able to
00:06:32
find or form an educated guess at
00:06:34
regarding these conflicts altogether
00:06:36
come out to equal around 175 000 dead if
00:06:40
we round up
00:06:41
now as far as i'm aware these values
00:06:43
that i was able to find already do
00:06:46
account for losses that were incurred
00:06:48
from wounds so for this value i am not
00:06:50
going to account for any extra wound
00:06:52
deaths but i will for later values that
00:06:55
we will get into however there is still
00:06:57
a lot that can be said in terms of
00:06:59
disease but this is where things are
00:07:01
going to get a bit tricky because once
00:07:02
again i just don't have a lot of data to
00:07:04
go off of specifically for japan so this
00:07:07
is where i'm going to use some ratios
00:07:09
from other conflicts ones like the 30
00:07:12
years war where disease is accounted for
00:07:14
what is estimated to be around maybe
00:07:15
two-thirds of the actual military deaths
00:07:18
so that would mean that we would be
00:07:19
adding an additional 350 000 deaths to
00:07:22
our total bumping it up to 525 000
00:07:26
overall which is already higher than my
00:07:28
previous estimate where i was not
00:07:30
accounting for diseases
00:07:32
after calculating these values the
00:07:34
largest amount of death in any single
00:07:36
battle is without a doubt the battle of
00:07:38
sekigahara now as i mentioned in my
00:07:40
actual sekigahara video there are a
00:07:42
couple of different estimates as to how
00:07:44
many people actually died on the field
00:07:46
that day with most sources saying
00:07:48
somewhere around thirty thousand yet
00:07:50
others going so far as to say as much as
00:07:53
sixty thousand for this calculation i
00:07:55
chose to use the more realistic thirty
00:07:57
thousand estimate because of this we
00:07:59
roughly come to the idea that over the
00:08:00
course of the six hours the battle was
00:08:02
fought an average of perhaps five
00:08:04
thousand men were being killed on the
00:08:06
field per hour and of course if we were
00:08:09
to use the more devastating sixty 000
00:08:11
dead number that would mean that the
00:08:13
death toll would double to around 10 000
00:08:15
per hour but if we are just relying on
00:08:18
the more widely accepted 30 000 dead
00:08:20
although it would be the single
00:08:21
bloodiest battle in all of samurai
00:08:23
history in terms of actual percentage of
00:08:25
damage inflicted by two armies onto one
00:08:28
another the fourth battle of kawa
00:08:29
nakajima appears to be much more of a
00:08:31
meat grinder as both the takeda and
00:08:33
uesugi would lose roughly 20 percent of
00:08:36
their armies to each other that day on
00:08:37
the field
00:08:39
yet in terms of armies being completely
00:08:41
annihilated both the battles of
00:08:43
nagashino and mikatakahara win out
00:08:45
however if we were to add up all the
00:08:47
dead from both sieges of osaka into one
00:08:50
overall number that would be the most
00:08:52
dead of any samurai conflict ever coming
00:08:55
out to what i estimate to be somewhere
00:08:56
around 58 000 dead over the course of
00:08:59
both the winter and summer sieges
00:09:02
so going back to the original number i
00:09:04
stated we need to remember that this
00:09:06
number only accounts for the battles
00:09:08
sieges and conflicts that i listed as
00:09:11
you are probably well aware i left out a
00:09:13
ton there were countless other campaigns
00:09:16
skirmishes and wars throughout the
00:09:17
entirety of the period that are much
00:09:19
harder to find actual numbers for
00:09:22
so this is where we are really going to
00:09:24
start pulling numbers out of thin air to
00:09:26
try to come up with a reasonable idea of
00:09:28
how many may have died
00:09:30
i need to warn you that this is where
00:09:31
we'll be getting into a bit of math and
00:09:33
my reasoning behind how i'm going to go
00:09:35
about doing all these calculations if
00:09:37
you think you'll find that boring and
00:09:38
you don't want to watch all that please
00:09:40
just use the timestamps below to skip
00:09:42
ahead to my final calculations later on
00:09:44
in the video
00:09:46
now it is no secret that as time went on
00:09:48
during the single could you die the size
00:09:50
of armies grew bigger as lord's domains
00:09:52
got more and more massive this means
00:09:54
that over time the death toll from
00:09:56
battles would obviously rise too
00:09:58
so for this what i'm going to do is take
00:10:01
the blueprint of casualties from other
00:10:03
battles and apply them to segments of
00:10:05
time multiplying them by amounts i will
00:10:08
go over in just a minute
00:10:10
now the way i'm going to go about
00:10:11
separating the eras of the singukuchi
00:10:13
die will be threefold the early years so
00:10:16
the time going from 1477 to 1520 the
00:10:20
middle years 1521 to 1568 and the later
00:10:25
years 1569 to 1615 each of these eras
00:10:29
are around the same number of years in
00:10:31
length
00:10:32
so then let's start with the early years
00:10:34
how many soldiers may have roughly died
00:10:36
during the first few decades of the
00:10:38
sengokujidai
00:10:40
well the blueprint number i'm going to
00:10:42
use for the average amount of casualties
00:10:44
from these early battles would be around
00:10:47
500 in smaller battles to 2000 in larger
00:10:50
battles
00:10:51
this is just an estimate i came up with
00:10:53
after looking at the army sizes of an
00:10:55
early battle like that of arita nakaide
00:10:58
morimoto nari's first battle and victory
00:11:00
which occurred in 1517.
00:11:03
however since this range is just a rough
00:11:05
guess i'll be using a nice middle value
00:11:08
of 1250 casualties
00:11:11
as for the actual calculations although
00:11:13
numerous battles and skirmishes would
00:11:15
have taken place over the four decades
00:11:17
this early period consists of i am
00:11:19
choosing to use this number around three
00:11:22
times per decade
00:11:23
why three well i would say that the
00:11:25
first two would be good to account for
00:11:27
any major battles that would have
00:11:28
occurred with a third put in to account
00:11:31
for all other minor clashes added up if
00:11:33
you feel i should be using different
00:11:35
numbers please let me know your thoughts
00:11:37
down in the comments
00:11:39
so if we break it down each decade is as
00:11:41
follows multiplying 1 250 times 3 for
00:11:45
each decade we get 3750
00:11:48
dead in the decades ranging from 1477 to
00:11:52
1487 1487-1497
00:11:56
to 1507 and 1507 to 1517 with an
00:12:01
additional 1250 added in for the three
00:12:03
year period between 1517 and 1520. this
00:12:07
adds up to
00:12:08
hundred and fifty 16250 during the early
00:12:10
years of the singukuchi die
00:12:13
once again this is just an estimate
00:12:16
however it is here i'm going to try my
00:12:18
best to factor in probable deaths from
00:12:20
wounds and diseases
00:12:22
for calculating wounds i looked around
00:12:24
to try to find a reasonable estimate as
00:12:26
to how many wounds resulted in deaths in
00:12:28
other medieval battles what i was able
00:12:30
to find was that it appears that roughly
00:12:32
for every two soldiers wounded you would
00:12:34
also have one death now this is just a
00:12:37
rough idea as a multitude of other
00:12:39
factors would be needed to be taken into
00:12:41
account but for our estimate this is the
00:12:43
method i'll be using to help us get some
00:12:45
values so it is here we're going to
00:12:47
essentially just double the number to
00:12:49
account for wounds that would end up
00:12:51
resulting in a fatality this brings our
00:12:53
new number up to 32 500 but now let us
00:12:57
also factor in disease death using the
00:13:00
same method i used before accounting for
00:13:02
diseases and applying it to our initial
00:13:04
value would bump this number up to 65
00:13:07
000 which in my head seems like it might
00:13:10
be too big a number given the size of
00:13:11
clans at this time but let's still go
00:13:14
ahead and use it for our estimate
00:13:16
now on to the middle years it is here
00:13:19
i'm going to use the fourth battle of
00:13:20
kawanakajima as my blueprint for army
00:13:23
values we get a middle casualty value of
00:13:26
around 3650
00:13:28
but being at the fourth battle of
00:13:30
kawanakajima was probably one of the
00:13:32
largest battles that occurred during
00:13:33
this time frame i'm going to subtract 1
00:13:35
000 from this number just to be on the
00:13:37
safe side
00:13:38
so then we are looking at perhaps an
00:13:40
average of
00:13:41
2650 dead per battle during this time
00:13:44
however since we do start to know more
00:13:47
details regarding the death tolls from
00:13:49
battles during this period i am not
00:13:50
going to multiply the number by 3 but
00:13:53
instead just by 2 per decade
00:13:56
just like i did before multiplying this
00:13:58
number by 2 for each decade we come out
00:14:00
to around 23 850 dead once again adding
00:14:04
an extra 2 650 on for the additional
00:14:07
years at the end
00:14:08
but now let us factor in wounds and
00:14:10
diseases using our previous methods and
00:14:13
this number jumps up to 95 400.
00:14:17
moving on to the last period this is
00:14:19
really where we have the most number of
00:14:21
recorded values for the battles
00:14:23
throughout the sengoku jidai but still
00:14:25
it has been hard to find data for such
00:14:27
conflicts as the decade-long siege of
00:14:29
ishiyama honganji the oda campaign
00:14:31
against the mori the invasions of
00:14:33
shikoku and kyushu and so on and so
00:14:36
forth for this period i'm going to be
00:14:38
using the blueprint of the battle of
00:14:40
komaki nakakute as it is a nice value in
00:14:42
between the amounts of those at yamazaki
00:14:45
and shizugatake for this reason i'm
00:14:47
going to be using an estimate of 3 000
00:14:50
dead per battle once again i am just
00:14:52
going to be multiplying this number by 2
00:14:53
per decade but i'm not going to do so at
00:14:56
all for the years spanning from 1590 to
00:14:58
1615 as we already know the values from
00:15:01
those years going from the imjin war to
00:15:03
the battle of sekigahara and then to the
00:15:05
sieges of osaka
00:15:07
with that said we get a rough value of
00:15:09
12 000
00:15:11
which once again accounting for wounds
00:15:13
and diseases shoots this up to around
00:15:15
forty eight thousand
00:15:18
all right so adding up all these values
00:15:20
we just calculated going from the early
00:15:22
years to the middle years to the later
00:15:25
years we get a total estimate of
00:15:27
somewhere around two hundred and eight
00:15:29
thousand four hundred
00:15:31
now let's put that number on top of our
00:15:33
previous number of five hundred and
00:15:35
twenty-five thousand
00:15:37
the new total we come to is 733
00:15:41
4400 and that is not even factoring in
00:15:44
the total amount of civilians that may
00:15:46
have died as a result of war
00:15:48
now as i mentioned in my previous upload
00:15:50
of this video i was fully aware that my
00:15:52
estimation for civilian deaths was
00:15:54
likely way off once again this is just
00:15:57
another thing we don't have enough
00:15:59
information on what i tried to
00:16:01
previously do was take the number of
00:16:03
dead from oranobunaga's attack on mount
00:16:05
hie and multiply that to come to an
00:16:07
estimate once again i was really only
00:16:09
calculating for civilians that were
00:16:11
killed directly by samurai as was the
00:16:14
case for mountier
00:16:15
however this time around after looking
00:16:18
at civilian casualties from conflicts
00:16:20
like the imjin war i decided not to risk
00:16:22
underselling it again and simply say
00:16:24
that there is a good chance that it was
00:16:26
over 1 million civilians killed not only
00:16:28
as a direct result of war but also as a
00:16:31
result of famine and disease that war
00:16:34
brings with it this would bump our grand
00:16:37
total up to one million seven hundred
00:16:39
and thirty three thousand four hundred
00:16:43
but now let us factor in the imjin war a
00:16:46
conflict fought by the samurai during
00:16:48
the actual years of the sengoku jidai it
00:16:50
is here i'm just going to be accounting
00:16:52
for the amount of japanese that died
00:16:54
during the war and not any of the
00:16:56
koreans or chinese it is estimated that
00:16:58
somewhere around 100 000 japanese
00:17:01
soldiers died during the samurai
00:17:03
invasion of korea now this number i
00:17:05
actually believe to be somewhat accurate
00:17:08
given the sizes of troop numbers we know
00:17:10
it's likely that the actual number is a
00:17:11
bit over 100 000 but not so much that i
00:17:14
want to add thousands more on to inflate
00:17:16
it up so for now i'm going to choose to
00:17:18
just keep it at one hundred thousand
00:17:20
that on top of our previous value comes
00:17:22
out to reach up to one million eight
00:17:23
hundred and thirty three thousand four
00:17:25
hundred
00:17:26
but i'm going to separate it between
00:17:28
military dead and military with civilian
00:17:31
dead being that civilian losses is such
00:17:33
a hard number to pinpoint these numbers
00:17:36
are massively different when compared to
00:17:37
the number i reached in my first upload
00:17:39
of this video where i was not accounting
00:17:41
for deaths from wounds and diseases as
00:17:43
well as only calculating for what i was
00:17:45
considering civilians killed directly by
00:17:47
samurai and not as a result of samurai
00:17:50
warfare
00:17:52
now it has been estimated that
00:17:53
throughout the 1500s japan had a
00:17:55
population of anywhere from 8 million to
00:17:57
17 million if we were to take a middle
00:18:00
number of twelve million five hundred
00:18:02
thousand the amount of deaths during the
00:18:03
entirety of the single gucci die using
00:18:06
our rough estimation would total to just
00:18:08
around fourteen percent of the
00:18:09
population killed as a result of the
00:18:12
wars which although seems like a smaller
00:18:14
percentage is still a staggering number
00:18:16
one which we should really reflect on
00:18:18
more today
00:18:20
and it does bring up an interesting
00:18:21
point one which i know people like
00:18:23
author and historical researcher anthony
00:18:25
cummins has questioned that should the
00:18:27
samurai be compared to other mass
00:18:29
murdering tyrants throughout history
00:18:31
based on the magnitude of death they
00:18:33
would cause
00:18:34
especially those we dubbed today as
00:18:37
japan's three great unifiers who in
00:18:39
pursuit of their goals led to the deaths
00:18:41
of tens of thousands alone and that's
00:18:44
not even counting the millions of
00:18:45
koreans who were killed by the samurai
00:18:48
during the imjin war
00:18:50
of course there is a lot more to it than
00:18:51
to simply call them bloodthirsty each of
00:18:54
them had their aims during the singoku
00:18:56
period but it is impossible to ignore
00:18:58
the amount of death that was caused as a
00:19:00
result of samurai ambition
00:19:03
once again for the hundredth time these
00:19:05
numbers i came to were just rough
00:19:07
estimates
00:19:08
if you feel i have left anything
00:19:10
unaccounted for or made errors in my
00:19:12
calculations i would love to hear it in
00:19:14
the comments down below please correct
00:19:16
me if you think i have made any mistakes
00:19:18
or if you do know any other source that
00:19:20
has given a solid estimation of the
00:19:22
amount of those that died during the
00:19:24
sengokuji die
00:19:26
and with that said thank you for

Description:

This is an update to my original video where I discussed the death toll of the Sengoku Jidai. In my first attempt at this, I used the data of battles that we know, to formulate a number of how many may have been killed as a result of the wars. I did not however originally factor in death attributed by wounds and disease, as well as only calculated civilian deaths from totals we already knew. I simply was totaling the amount killed directly by Samurai Armies. This resulted in the original overall number being rather low. In this video I try to rectify that by using data from other wars to try and fill some of the gaps. (Original Description) How many people died during the Sengoku Jidai? It is a massive yet hard number to pinpoint. In this video I do my best to provide an estimate for such a number of those that were killed as a result of the wars in Japan from 1477-1615.
