00:00:00
it is a couple minutes to 2 p.m. on the
00:00:02
2nd of November 2023 and I'm tuned into
00:00:05
BBC Radio because they are just about to
00:00:07
play For The First Time The Beatles
00:00:09
final ever song now and then so
00:00:13
unfortunately I'm unlikely to be able to
00:00:14
play any clips from the final version of
00:00:16
now and then in this video due to
00:00:18
copyright reasons so do go check it out
00:00:20
elsewhere but let me now tell you about
00:00:22
how we wound up here how we are over 50
00:00:25
years from the breakup of The Beetles
00:00:27
and yet now only now are we hearing the
00:00:30
final ever Beatles song for the longest
00:00:33
time the last Beetles song the last
00:00:35
previously unheard Beetles song to be
00:00:36
released were the singles released
00:00:38
alongside the Let It Be album in 1970
00:00:41
the last Beatles album to be released
00:00:43
and with John Lenin tragically dying in
00:00:45
1980 you would have assumed that that
00:00:47
was the end of any potential new Beatles
00:00:49
music but in the 1990s Yoko gave Paul a
00:00:53
tape of four John lenon demos recorded
00:00:56
at his piano at his suite in the Dakota
00:00:58
in New York for any new songs to truly
00:01:01
be considered Beetles songs they would
00:01:03
have to include contributions from all
00:01:05
four beetles so these John lenon demos
00:01:07
provided the perfect way to finally
00:01:09
release some new Beetles music sure
00:01:12
enough in 1995 with help from The
00:01:14
Beetles original engineer Jeff Emer and
00:01:16
with Jeff Lynn from ELO producing The
00:01:19
Beatles released real love and Free as a
00:01:21
bird which were based on these demo
00:01:23
recordings by
00:01:28
John
00:01:31
now of course being demo recordings
00:01:33
recorded onto a tape recorder in the
00:01:35
1970s they weren't very high quality and
00:01:38
although the demos of real life and Free
00:01:40
as a bird were deemed workable the demo
00:01:42
for the track now and then was just too
00:01:45
noisy to be used as you can hear from
00:01:47
the recording not only does the vocal
00:01:48
often get buried by the sound of the
00:01:50
piano but there's also a consistent hum
00:01:52
throughout the entire demo due to the
00:01:54
Main's
00:01:56
electricity I know it's true
00:01:59
[Music]
00:02:03
it's all because of
00:02:07
you in 1995 when the Beatles were
00:02:10
recording real love and Free as a bird
00:02:12
they did have a go at also recording now
00:02:14
and then after all they did want to have
00:02:17
three new songs to release one for each
00:02:19
of their new Anthology collections that
00:02:21
were coming out but after a short time
00:02:23
attempting to work on now and then it
00:02:25
was decided that it wasn't going to work
00:02:27
George Harrison reportedly called it
00:02:29
eing rubbish so the song was shelved but
00:02:32
Paul McCartney continued saying over the
00:02:34
years in various interviews that he did
00:02:36
want to revisit now and then at some
00:02:37
point in the
00:02:39
future so that one that one's still
00:02:41
lingering around sowhere I'm going to
00:02:43
Nick in with Jeff and do it finish it
00:02:46
one of these days and sure enough last
00:02:48
year the perfect opportunity to finally
00:02:51
complete the final Beatle song came
00:02:53
about I'm sure you've heard about get
00:02:55
back the Disney plus series directed by
00:02:57
Peter Jackson that came out in late 21
00:02:59
one this series involved Peter Jackson
00:03:02
remastering much of the unused footage
00:03:04
from thetic B sessions to create this
00:03:07
new Fantastic documentary and one of the
00:03:09
approaches that Peter Jackson took to
00:03:11
remastering the footage is training an
00:03:14
AI to recognize the sound of the Beatles
00:03:17
voices that way he could extract from
00:03:19
the audio recordings each beetles voice
00:03:22
allowing him to remix the audio in a
00:03:25
much clearer crisper way so that meant
00:03:27
they now had this AI system that was
00:03:29
trained on John Lennon's voice it could
00:03:31
recognize and pull out John Lennon's
00:03:33
voice from a recording so that is
00:03:36
exactly what they did they use this AI
00:03:38
to extract the voice recording from the
00:03:41
noisy now and then demo and the results
00:03:44
were impressively usable I know it's
00:03:49
true it's all because of
00:03:53
you and if I make it
00:03:57
through all
00:04:01
because so when we came to make what
00:04:05
will be the last Beatles record it was a
00:04:07
demo that John had and we've just
00:04:09
finished it up and be released this year
00:04:12
we were able to take Jon's voice and get
00:04:14
it pure through this AI so that then we
00:04:17
could mix the record as you would
00:04:19
normally do now to be clear despite what
00:04:22
some sensationalist news reports and
00:04:24
tweets said they haven't used AI to sort
00:04:27
of regenerate the sound of Jon's voice
00:04:29
or Creator AI that sounds like JN
00:04:32
they've just used the AI to separate
00:04:34
Jon's performance out from the noisy
00:04:37
recording so armed now with this
00:04:40
isolated version of John singing now and
00:04:42
then last year the surviving Beatles
00:04:44
Ringo Star and poor McCartney set about
00:04:47
completing now and then and it very much
00:04:49
was a case of completing it because even
00:04:51
the original demo version wasn't a
00:04:53
finished
00:04:55
[Music]
00:04:58
song there were still missing elements
00:05:01
missing lyrics that Paul and Ringo would
00:05:03
have to fill in now of course earlier I
00:05:05
said that for a Beatle song to truly be
00:05:07
a Beatles song it would have to include
00:05:09
contributions from all four Beatles but
00:05:12
of course tragically George died in 2001
00:05:15
so how is George represented how is
00:05:18
George contributing to this track well
00:05:20
back in 1995 when Ringo Paul and George
00:05:23
first had a go at recording now and then
00:05:25
George laid down some guitar work which
00:05:28
was thankfully saved through the years
00:05:31
and has now finally been used in this
00:05:34
final version of now and then so George
00:05:36
is there playing guitar and yes George
00:05:39
did say that this track was effing
00:05:41
rubbish but Olivia Harrison George's
00:05:43
Widow is certain that George would be
00:05:45
happy with this final recording if
00:05:48
George were here today Danny and I know
00:05:50
he would have wholeheartedly joined Paul
00:05:52
and Ringo in completing the recording of
00:05:54
now and then there's also a few nice
00:05:57
little touches that have been added to
00:05:58
this track to really give it that
00:06:00
Beatles authenticity that Beatles magic
00:06:03
for example they've allegedly actually
00:06:05
taken isolated backing vocal recordings
00:06:08
from Here There and Everywhere Elena
00:06:10
Rick and because and then repurposed
00:06:13
those original backing vocals to provide
00:06:15
backing vocals on now and then also Paul
00:06:18
has recorded a slide guitar solo in the
00:06:20
style of George Harrison as a tribute to
00:06:23
George and finally to really add that
00:06:25
Beatles magic to this track chares
00:06:27
Martin the son of late producer George
00:06:30
Martin has put together a strings
00:06:32
arrangement to complete now and
00:06:36
then as far as music and culture are
00:06:39
concerned we live in unprecedented times
00:06:42
recorded music the technology the art
00:06:44
form is less than 100 years old so is it
00:06:48
really going to survive the next 100 200
00:06:51
500 a, years yes we have the means of
00:06:55
recording And archiving all of the music
00:06:58
and culture that we have today but in a
00:07:00
thousand years time will the average
00:07:02
person actually still listen to any of
00:07:04
the music that we listen to today well I
00:07:07
think if there is one candidate for a
00:07:11
cannon of songs a collection of music
00:07:13
that could possibly weather that storm
00:07:16
it's the Beatles If you think about how
00:07:19
Shakespeare has managed to survive
00:07:21
through as sort of a archetypal example
00:07:24
of Western culture I think the
00:07:26
collection of songs that the Beatles
00:07:28
created is probably most likely cultural
00:07:30
artifact to survive the next Millennia
00:07:34
so today in a way we have witnessed the
00:07:37
final bookend in that what may be
00:07:40
timeless Cannon of work we've seen the
00:07:44
last play that Shakespeare ever wrote
00:07:47
released today by The Beatles and
00:07:49
hopefully lasting for the rest of
00:07:56
[Music]
00:07:58
time
