00:00:03
hello creative friends. i hope you're doing well.  this video is another spin-off of the doodle grid
00:00:11
that i made back in 2019. i wanted to  paint it using one color family only
00:00:17
so i went on the community and asked you  all to give me suggestions so thank you
00:00:23
to all that have left comments. the color green  won by a small margin, ahead of pastel/easter
00:00:32
colors and i'm sorry to report that i  don't generally do well with pastel colors.
00:00:38
so green it was for me! this grid pattern has 12  squares so three more than usual and the plan was
00:00:45
to paint misshapen squares with three different  shades of green. even though some of the colors
00:00:51
don't mention green (in their respective name), to me they have green undertones so that's why they made the cut.
00:00:56
there's Davie's Gray, Shadow Yellow and Shadow  Green. as usual you'll find a list of supplies
00:01:04
including the watercolor paint names in the  description below as well as in a pinned comment.
00:01:26
besides the monochromatic  theme i wanted to explore,
00:01:30
i also wanted to play around with mixing colors  within a square as well as adding texture .
00:01:37
that's why i opted for a fairly small brush  considering the rather large size of squares i
00:01:44
needed to paint because that allowed me to be more  precise. and honestly i was also feeling very lazy
00:01:52
and i didn't want to deal with  having to use two different brushes.
00:01:57
in terms of watercolor painting techniques, some  squares were painted using the glazing method
00:02:04
which consists of a very flat and smooth layer. in  others, i used the gradient technique. i also varied
00:02:13
the orientation of the gradient or the  gradation. i also used the wet-on-wet technique
00:02:21
with two different colors as well as with  clean water to create texture. there are other
00:02:29
multiple ways that we can create texture with  watercolor and i intend on exploring further.
00:02:37
but i didn't want to cram everything into  one video so stay tuned for a future video
00:02:44
on that topic because i think watercolor...  especially watercolor... is so conducive to
00:02:52
creating great texture because of its transparency  properties. so there's a lot of fun to be had there.
00:03:03

00:03:59
and i do recommend this because if you are a  doodler and you like to use other colors other
00:04:02
i let the paint fully dry for a few hours. i went  to have dinner and watched a couple of episodes of
00:04:11
my tv shows and then i started doodling which is  another fun part of this process. for the doodling
00:04:19
i am using a felt tip pen which is by Mitsubishi . it's the "Uni Pin" -- not pen but pIn P-I-N --
00:04:30
and this one is in the color dark gray. the  size is 0.1 millimeter. that's quite fine
00:04:36
however it's always been my problem with felt-tip  pens -- they get damaged fairly easily.
00:04:45
so i noticed towards the end of this exercise that  the tip wasn't as fine as it was at the beginning
00:04:53
unfortunately. but these pens are very  permanent -- they're waterproof
00:05:00
with pigment ink which is great if you're  working with watercolor. i bought it in a set
00:05:13
than black, because i find sometimes black is way  too strong, i bought a pack of light gray, dark gray,
00:05:22
sepia and black. and they came in two different sizes
00:05:28
for each color. so a set of eight pens and i think  i found this on Amazon. i will try and remember to put the link.
00:05:36
but they work wonderfully. like i  said the only drawback is that they are felt tips
00:05:44
so one thing to consider. they do fray eventually.  the other thing that is worth mentioning here,
00:05:52
and i'm gonna make a few of you laugh, but i have  fallen in love with another metallic watercolor
00:06:00
i have fallen in love with the color "copper" from Sennelier.  this is the one that i've had in my stash
00:06:09
forever and i've never used it. i don't think i've  ever used it in a video anyways. but that color
00:06:18
goes so well with the green and it's so  creamy! so this is what i'm using to color in
00:06:28
the first square that you just saw and i'll  use it in different places on this piece.
00:06:36
i'm also using this Posca paint pen which  is a white paint pen and a bronze gel pen.
00:06:46
bronze and copper are very close.  there's a slight difference but not enough to be
00:06:53
jarring i think. so i kind of used both on this  piece. the rest is self-explanatory so you can
00:07:15
[MUSIC PLAYING]
00:14:06
in case you've never had to do this and you bought  a pad of watercolor paper this is how you separate
00:14:13
the sheet from the pad. so i use the X-ACTO knife  and i just run the blade along the glue line.
00:14:21
there's always one opening somewhere. i have a small confession to make: i had recorded this,
00:14:29
well now it's been two days ago, only to  realize that the entire painting process
00:14:36
had not been recorded. so i had to redo everything  which is the reason why i'm so late. anyways the
00:14:43
important thing is that i'm here and hopefully you  are here to watch it too. i'm really happy with the
00:14:49
piece. i'm looking at the original and i can see  little bits that i can add, more here and there,
00:14:56
but eventually you kind of have to call it  quits. so i hope you've enjoyed this. i hope
00:15:01
this has given you the inspiration to bust out  your watercolor paints. maybe look at them in a
00:15:07
different way, try the monochromatic approach.   i think having less colors to play with can also be
00:15:16
very liberating. i'm not sure which color i'm  going to try next but i will definitely try
00:15:22
another monochromatic theme so if you have any  ideas feel free to leave them below. thank you
00:15:29
so much for watching. thank you for all your  support. also thank you to my awesome patrons
00:15:35
for supporting my art over at Patreon for  the past... almost six years... no seven years
00:15:43
now... so thank you so much! have a wonderful  and creative week and i will see you soon!
