00:00:13
hmm
00:00:26
hey guys andy here and today we're going
00:00:28
to look at the classic song smoke on the
00:00:30
water by deep purple um this is
00:00:33
appropriate for anyone as an absolute
00:00:36
first riff that you learn on guitar um
00:00:39
it is quite easy to do therefore but i
00:00:41
do see it played kind of incorrect from
00:00:43
the record quite a lot so i'm going to
00:00:45
show you the proper way to do it and a
00:00:47
little bit of an easier way a little
00:00:49
trick with it um to make sure that
00:00:51
absolutely everyone can play this
00:00:53
because it's it's one that most people
00:00:55
learn as their first riff um we're going
00:00:58
to be doing something a little bit
00:00:59
different we're not going to be using a
00:01:01
pick as you might have done in the past
00:01:02
we're going to be using your first two
00:01:04
fingers to get the sound of the record
00:01:06
so if you don't like using a pick this
00:01:08
one should be cool let's get you
00:01:09
straight in for a close-up and let's see
00:01:11
how to play it if you'd like more of
00:01:12
these easy riffs do check out

00:01:16
or please subscribe if you do like this
00:01:18
lesson
00:01:30
so
00:01:40
okay smoke on the water first of all the
00:01:42
absolute easiest way that we can play
00:01:44
this um is really just by using one
00:01:47
finger now what i'm doing with my right
00:01:49
hand is plucking the middle two strings
00:01:52
so string if we count the littlest one
00:01:54
uh the thinnest one as number one we're
00:01:57
gonna go one two three
00:01:59
four
00:02:01
three and four together
00:02:03
with your first two fingers rather than
00:02:05
using a pick so that we get
00:02:07
this sound
00:02:12
and that's exactly how we'll get the
00:02:13
tone of the record and by sticking to
00:02:16
those two strings if you've never done
00:02:18
this kind of finger picking or plucking
00:02:20
before
00:02:21
it's going to help you get used to that
00:02:23
before we go for the proper way to do it
00:02:25
which is kind of mixing and matching
00:02:27
both strings
00:02:28
so first of all
00:02:30
just the open string
00:02:32
the middle two together and you want to
00:02:33
try and get them both
00:02:35
as even as you can
00:02:37
but bear in mind that the louder you
00:02:39
pluck them
00:02:40
you'll probably get a better tone
00:02:43
as opposed to being
00:02:46
really kind of subtle with it so open
00:02:49
and then rest your fingers
00:02:51
to mute
00:02:53
and then we have your first finger at
00:02:55
the third fret which for most people
00:02:57
will be the first dot so this is the
00:02:59
head of the guitar fret one two
00:03:02
three open
00:03:05
three
00:03:06
with your first finger
00:03:08
and then you can slide your first finger
00:03:10
all the way to fifth fret for the third
00:03:13
set of notes
00:03:16
or to stay more static we can use your
00:03:19
third and little finger kind of like
00:03:21
this together kind of like a power chord
00:03:24
um
00:03:25
to play those
00:03:26
two notes rather than moving your first
00:03:28
finger because that's technically better
00:03:30
technique it's higher level guitar
00:03:32
playing
00:03:34
or
00:03:37
the choice is yours as i say you can do
00:03:39
it all with one finger
00:03:42
or we can use our third and little and
00:03:44
the tip is to keep these the third your
00:03:47
little finger especially tied to your
00:03:49
third so that there's no
00:03:51
space here they kind of get strength
00:03:53
from each other if they act as
00:03:58
one and then we have that same thing
00:04:01
again one two three
00:04:04
one two but we slide one fret further so
00:04:07
this is sixth fret
00:04:11
and pick six
00:04:13
keep the fingers down and slide them
00:04:15
back
00:04:16
to fifth fret which most people find
00:04:19
that a lot easier to do with the first
00:04:21
finger so that's why i demoed it with my
00:04:23
first finger in the demo earlier
00:04:27
so
00:04:28
from the very top just so that you get
00:04:30
the order
00:04:31
one two three
00:04:34
one
00:04:35
two
00:04:37
three
00:04:38
four
00:04:41
so we pick and then just keep the same
00:04:43
pressure down and slide back that's a
00:04:46
lot easier to do with a lot more
00:04:48
overdrive on it
00:04:50
um let's give that one more go from the
00:04:52
very top two
00:04:54
three
00:04:55
four
00:04:59
one two
00:05:01
pink slide
00:05:04
so most of you will have got one two
00:05:06
three by now
00:05:08
let's just go for the second part
00:05:10
one two
00:05:12
three slide
00:05:13
that together two three four
00:05:16
one two three slides
00:05:21
okay
00:05:22
um and then the third time is the same
00:05:25
as the first so we just go one two three
00:05:28
again
00:05:30
and then the end is your first finger
00:05:32
flat
00:05:34
to open
00:05:36
so the whole thing
00:05:38
well that second half just just to
00:05:40
quickly demo
00:05:45
it's kind of like one two three
00:05:48
back
00:05:49
down
00:05:51
so frets numbers y zero three
00:05:55
five
00:05:57
three
00:05:58
zero
00:06:01
and that's the whole riff all together
00:06:03
from the very top
00:06:05
two
00:06:06
three
00:06:07
four
00:06:17
let me move my hand over here so i can
00:06:18
mute the strings a little bit better
00:06:29
if you're choosing to do it with one
00:06:30
finger
00:06:41
it's completely possible and i highly
00:06:42
advise that you give it a go just to
00:06:44
kind of get both ways of doing this riff
00:06:46
um
00:06:47
the proper way to do it the way it's
00:06:49
played on the record is rather than the
00:06:51
open two strings
00:06:53
we start with your third and little
00:06:55
finger
00:06:57
at the fifth fret but on string five and
00:07:00
four and we pluck those two together and
00:07:03
you simply swap that
00:07:05
for this
00:07:06
now as you'll notice
00:07:08
they sound
00:07:10
very very similar in fact they're
00:07:12
exactly the same notes
00:07:21
so that's kind of the the proper way to
00:07:23
do it as the record and if you get those
00:07:26
first three one
00:07:28
so just so you can see my fingers one
00:07:31
two
00:07:32
three
00:07:34
then you should be able to kind of work
00:07:35
out the rest of the roof because it's
00:07:37
just that first knot
00:07:39
that's been swapped
00:07:44
but
00:07:46
if certainly if you're doing this the
00:07:47
one-fingered way and is that if this is
00:07:49
the first time you've ever played any
00:07:51
riff at all on on a guitar
00:07:54
you want to make sure that you get in
00:07:56
this
00:07:57
easy way to do it first because this way
00:07:59
is an awful lot tougher mainly because
00:08:02
we're swapping strings that's the tricky
00:08:03
bit about it so you want to get an even
00:08:06
tone and even sound
00:08:08
between all the notes
00:08:11
rather than kind of one really loud and
00:08:13
then some quiet and then sometimes
00:08:15
there's only be one string ring around
00:08:17
we want everything ringing out is get
00:08:18
that one sounding as good as possible on
00:08:21
the middle two strings
00:08:22
and then see if we can swap
00:08:25
that first one
00:08:29
to the other string
00:08:30
um
00:08:31
and that starts the sum
00:08:34
that repeats and repeats and repeats as
00:08:36
all
00:08:37
quality guitar riffs do
00:08:39
and until the chorus
00:08:41
for the chorus section
00:08:43
um we have fifth fret i'll just show you
00:08:46
with my first finger because i think
00:08:47
it's kind of easy to see but you can
00:08:48
play that
00:08:49
with
00:08:52
three fingers three and four it goes
00:08:54
smoke
00:08:55
and just let it ring out smoke on the
00:08:58
wall
00:08:59
so
00:09:00
that's first fret
00:09:03
to open
00:09:04
so five
00:09:06
two
00:09:17
and then back to the roof again
00:09:26
as i tell you if you pick it really
00:09:27
evenly there's very little difference
00:09:29
between these two and these two
00:09:32
now chorus one more time
00:09:35
fifth fret middle two strings
00:09:37
first fret still middle two strings to
00:09:40
open
00:09:44
and then again smoke
00:09:47
on the water
00:09:50
and then straight back to the riff
00:09:58
just a quick tip on the picking hand
00:10:00
side it's a lot easier to stop other
00:10:03
strings ringing out and to get a more
00:10:05
consistent kind of picking action if we
00:10:08
rest your thumb on the thicker two
00:10:11
strings so we're gonna rest that thumb
00:10:13
there so that these two doesn't matter
00:10:15
what you do they're not gonna ring out
00:10:17
not sort of pressing it down all the way
00:10:18
to the pick we're just resting it on
00:10:20
there
00:10:21
and then you have a hand rest a thumb
00:10:23
rest for you to pluck those first two
00:10:26
fingers
00:10:27
and the entire length of my forearm
00:10:30
is all rested on on the guitar here now
00:10:32
so on the body of the guitar
00:10:36
and you can practice kind of getting
00:10:38
those ones
00:10:40
bringing out nice and even
00:10:50
if the thinner two
00:10:53
ring out a lot you probably want to do
00:10:54
that muting with this side
00:10:57
and have your fingers maybe a little
00:10:59
flatter
00:11:04
so as i'm playing these two
00:11:06
for example
00:11:07
thick thinnest two
00:11:10
they're not going to ring out because my
00:11:11
fingers just touching the string but not
00:11:14
the fretboard if my finger was totally
00:11:15
flat
00:11:18
if i accidentally hit another string
00:11:20
they're all going to ring out and i'm
00:11:22
going to sound a bit jazz so
00:11:25
have your first finger just touching the
00:11:28
thinner two strings and that should stop
00:11:30
any other strings ringing out hold on to
00:11:32
me a couple of times just to finish up
00:11:34
in one two three four
00:11:44
let's go nice and slow
00:11:54
one more time
00:12:03
and then the chorus fifth fret smoke
00:12:07
to first fret on the wall
00:12:20
and then the riff
00:12:26
