and engaging conversations to help you
00:00:19

00:00:23
whether you're a beginner or an advanced
00:00:26
learner listening to and repeating these
00:00:28
conversations will help you build your
00:00:30
vocabulary
00:00:33
improve your pronunciation and boost
00:00:35
your confidence when speaking English
00:00:38
[Applause]
00:00:45
[Music]
00:00:47
thank you
00:00:52
[Music]
00:00:56
and remember repetition is key
00:00:59
so be sure to watch this video multiple
00:01:02
times and practice saying the phrases
00:01:04
out loud
00:01:07
let's get started
00:01:14
foreign
00:01:15
[Music]
00:01:24
can you explain the concept of black
00:01:27
holes to me
00:01:29
sure Alex
00:01:32
so imagine a vacuum cleaner that's so
00:01:35
strong it can suck up anything even
00:01:37
light
00:01:39
wait what a vacuum cleaner that can suck
00:01:42
up light
00:01:45
yes that's how strong the gravitational
00:01:48
pull of a black hole is
00:01:53
it's so strong that nothing can escape
00:01:56
from it not even light
00:02:00
okay that's insane so if I were to fall
00:02:03
into a black hole what would happen
00:02:08
well you would experience something
00:02:10
called spaghettification
00:02:13
as you get closer to the black hole the
00:02:16
gravitational pull would become stronger
00:02:18
and stronger stretching your body out
00:02:20
like a piece of spaghetti
00:02:24
what that's terrifying
00:02:29
yeah that's why we don't get too close
00:02:32
to black holes
00:02:35
but they're also really fascinating
00:02:37
because they can tell us a lot about the
00:02:39
universe and how it works
00:02:43
that's true
00:02:45
so can we never escape from a black hole
00:02:49
no once you're in a black hole you're
00:02:51
stuck there forever
00:02:54
but don't worry the chances of you
00:02:56
falling into one are pretty low
00:03:00
that's a relief thanks for explaining
00:03:03
that to me Emma
00:03:06
anytime Alex just remember always stay
00:03:09
away from black holes and vacuum
00:03:11
cleaners with really strong suction
00:03:13
power
00:03:18
[Music]
00:03:23
hello are you enjoying the story
00:03:26
please give us a like thank you
00:03:32
[Music]
00:03:46
hey Mark have you heard about the latest
00:03:49
environmental initiative
00:03:52
no what is it
00:03:55
well some people are trying to live a
00:03:57
zero-waste lifestyle
00:04:00
zero waste what does that mean
00:04:04
it means they try to produce as little
00:04:07
waste as possible by reducing reusing
00:04:10
and recycling everything
00:04:13
that sounds interesting but how do they
00:04:15
do it
00:04:18
they bring their own reusable bags
00:04:20
containers and water bottles
00:04:23
they also compost their food waste and
00:04:26
buy in bulk to avoid Packaging
00:04:30
wow that's a lot of effort I don't think
00:04:33
I could do that
00:04:37
yeah it's not easy but it's worth it for
00:04:40
the environment
00:04:43
I guess you're right but what about all
00:04:45
the waste we've already produced
00:04:48
how can we deal with that
00:04:52
well we can start by properly disposing
00:04:55
of it and recycling as much as possible
00:04:59
we can also support companies that use
00:05:02
eco-friendly materials and packaging
00:05:06
good point but what about all the
00:05:08
plastic that's already out there
00:05:12
we can try to reduce our use of
00:05:14
single-use plastic
00:05:17
and support efforts to clean up the
00:05:19
oceans and beaches
00:05:23
that makes sense but what if we can't
00:05:26
live a zero waste lifestyle
00:05:29
does that mean we're bad for the
00:05:31
environment
00:05:33
no of course not
00:05:36
every little bit helps and it's
00:05:39
important to do what we can
00:05:42
that's true
00:05:44
I'll try to be more mindful of my waste
00:05:46
and support eco-friendly initiatives
00:05:50
great
00:05:52
let's start by bringing our own reusable
00:05:54
bags to the grocery store
00:06:00
sounds like a plan
00:06:02
and maybe we can wear matching
00:06:04
eco-friendly t-shirts while we're at it
00:06:07
laughs
00:06:09
that's a great idea we'll be the most
00:06:12
fashionable environmentalist around
00:06:17
yeah we'll be the Envy of all the trees
00:06:22
speaking of trees did you know that
00:06:25
deforestation is a major environmental
00:06:27
issue
00:06:30
yeah I've heard about that it's terrible
00:06:33
for the environment
00:06:37
exactly
00:06:39
trees absorb carbon dioxide and provide
00:06:42
oxygen so we need to protect them
00:06:48
but how can we do that
00:06:52
well we can support sustainable forestry
00:06:54
practices
00:06:56
and buy products made from sustainably
00:06:59
sourced wood
00:07:02
that sounds like a lot of work but it's
00:07:04
worth it for the environment
00:07:08
absolutely
00:07:12
we only have one planet so we need to
00:07:15
take care of it
00:07:19
yeah I don't think Elon Musk has a
00:07:22
backup Planet yet
00:07:26
exactly
00:07:28
let's do our part to keep this one
00:07:31
healthy and thriving

00:08:03
hey have either of you been to the
00:08:05
Eiffel Tower in Paris
00:08:08
yes I have
00:08:11
it's a must-see attraction in Paris
00:08:16
really I thought it was just a giant
00:08:18
metal Tower
00:08:21
well it's a giant metal Tower but it's
00:08:24
also an iconic symbol of Paris and an
00:08:26
engineering Marvel
00:08:29
plus the views from the top are amazing
00:08:35
hmm
00:08:36
I don't know I'm more of a beach person
00:08:39
myself
00:08:43
my favorite place to go is the beach in
00:08:45
Bali
00:08:48
oh I've always wanted to go to Bali
00:08:52
what's so great about it
00:08:56
well the beaches are beautiful the
00:08:59
weather is perfect and the food is
00:09:01
delicious
00:09:04
plus there are so many activities to do
00:09:07
like surfing snorkeling and yoga
00:09:12
that sounds nice but I prefer to be in
00:09:14
the mountains
00:09:16
my favorite place to visit is the Swiss
00:09:18
Alps
00:09:21
oh wow that must be breathtaking
00:09:26
it is the air is so clean and fresh and
00:09:29
the scenery is stunning
00:09:32
plus there are plenty of outdoor
00:09:33
activities to do like skiing hiking and
00:09:36
mountain climbing
00:09:40
you two are so different one likes the
00:09:43
beach and the other likes the mountains
00:09:46
what about me I like both
00:09:50
well that's good
00:09:53
then you can visit the Eiffel Tower go
00:09:56
to Bali for the beach and then visit
00:09:58
Switzerland for the mountains
00:10:02
that's quite the itinerary
00:10:05
I'm gonna need a lot of sunscreen and
00:10:08
hiking boots
00:10:10
yes and maybe a French dictionary too
00:10:15
don't worry Lena
00:10:17
we'll teach you some French phrases on
00:10:19
the way to the Eiffel Tower
00:10:22
and I'll teach you some Balinese words
00:10:24
too
00:10:26
it sounds like a fun adventure we'll
00:10:29
have to start planning soon
00:10:33
agreed and who knows maybe we'll
00:10:35
discover some new favorite places along
00:10:37
the way
00:10:39
[Music]
00:10:57
Sarah I'm so nervous about this
00:10:59
presentation on the Industrial
00:11:00
Revolution
00:11:02
what if I don't know enough about it
00:11:06
Mike don't worry you've done the
00:11:09
research
00:11:10
you know what you're talking about
00:11:15
I just don't want to bore everyone to
00:11:17
death
00:11:20
well that would certainly be ironic
00:11:22
considering the Industrial Revolution
00:11:23
was all about bringing things to life
00:11:27
but seriously Mike you'll do great
00:11:32
thanks Sarah I just wish I could make it
00:11:34
more interesting
00:11:37
I get it
00:11:39
why don't we try something
00:11:42
Let's Pretend We're living during the
00:11:44
Industrial Revolution
00:11:47
you're a factory worker and I'm a
00:11:50
factory owner
00:11:52
okay what do I do
00:11:57
get to work you lazy bum
00:12:00
we need those widgets manufactured
00:12:05
what I don't even know what a widget is
00:12:10
exactly that's the point
00:12:14
the Industrial Revolution was all about
00:12:16
mass production and factory work
00:12:19
but you can always Rebel and start a
00:12:22
labor union
00:12:24
I don't think that would go over too
00:12:26
well with my professor
00:12:28
probably not
00:12:31
but you could also talk about some of
00:12:33
the inventions that came out of the
00:12:35
Industrial Revolution
00:12:37
like the steam engine the telephone or
00:12:41
the light bulb
00:12:44
that's a good idea
00:12:47
maybe I could even do a dramatic
00:12:49
reenactment of Edison inventing the
00:12:51
light bulb
00:12:53
yes and don't forget to say Eureka when
00:12:57
you finally get to work
00:13:00
thanks Sarah you always know how to make
00:13:02
me feel better
00:13:05
of course Mike just remember to have fun
00:13:08
with it
00:13:10
and if all else fails just dress up as a
00:13:13
Victorian factory worker and start
00:13:14
singing I Will Survive
00:13:18
I think I'll stick with the light bulb
00:13:21
reenactment but thanks for the
00:13:22
suggestion
00:13:25
foreign
00:13:31
[Music]
00:13:43
has anyone ever traveled to Asia
00:13:48
I have I traveled to Japan in 2019 and
00:13:52
last summer I visited Thailand
00:13:57
very nice how did you acclimate yourself
00:13:59
to the culture there
00:14:02
what advice would you give to another
00:14:04
Westerner who was trying to visit
00:14:05
different Asian cultures
00:14:09
well first of all almost everyone
00:14:11
understands some level of English
00:14:14
people from Asia have usually received
00:14:17
some sort of English language
00:14:18
instruction sometime during their public
00:14:21
or private schooling
00:14:24
oh wow
00:14:27
so unlike in America where students
00:14:29
don't normally learn a foreign language
00:14:30
until Secondary School many students in
00:14:33
Asia learn English as part of their
00:14:34
school curriculum starting younger
00:14:39
exactly English language instruction
00:14:42
starts much younger often in elementary
00:14:44
school
00:14:47
that's interesting so do you still need
00:14:49
a translator
00:14:52
there is a lot of English use in bigger
00:14:54
cities of course
00:14:56
so if you're afraid of having a language
00:14:58
barrier
00:15:00
you'll have an easier time finding
00:15:02
English signage or someone who
00:15:04
understands English
00:15:06
then it would be for someone from an
00:15:09
Asian country to find their language
00:15:10
represented in a western country
00:15:14
he'll definitely still want to know the
00:15:16
basics of the language spoken wherever
00:15:18
you visit
00:15:20
or have a way to translate but you can
00:15:23
also definitely get around in the bigger
00:15:25
cities with little to no knowledge of
00:15:27
the local spoken tongue
00:15:30
that's good to know
00:15:33
Asian cultures also tend to have a
00:15:35
higher level of non-verbal communication
00:15:39
while westerners might use mostly verbal
00:15:42
communication
00:15:44
some Asian cultures rely more heavily on
00:15:47
body language gestures and facial
00:15:49
expressions to interact
00:15:52
this can be helpful when you don't know
00:15:55
a lot of the language
00:15:58
how else would you say Asian and Western
00:16:00
cultures compared to one another
00:16:04
well they are both definitely full of
00:16:06
their own diversity
00:16:09
there are several common religions in
00:16:11
Asian countries like Buddhism Islam and
00:16:13
Hinduism
00:16:16
while there are many people who practice
00:16:18
those and other religions in North
00:16:20
America Christianity is the most common
00:16:25
thanks for sharing these valuable pieces
00:16:27
of information we will continue next
00:16:29
time
00:16:30
I really wonder how you will compare
00:16:32
these different cultures
00:16:35
of course I have lots of things to tell
00:16:38
you
00:16:41
[Music]
00:16:55
hey have you seen the latest iPhone
00:16:59
it's got all these new features like
00:17:00
face recognition and augmented reality
00:17:05
oh yeah I saw that but have you heard of
00:17:08
the new smart toaster
00:17:11
smart toaster what's so smart about it
00:17:16
well it has a built-in touch screen that
00:17:19
lets you select the type of bread you're
00:17:20
toasting and how toasted you want it
00:17:25
plus it has a camera that takes a
00:17:27
picture of your toast and posted on
00:17:28
Instagram
00:17:31
what that's ridiculous who needs to take
00:17:34
a picture of their toast
00:17:38
I don't know apparently it's a thing now
00:17:42
people like to show off their perfectly
00:17:44
toasted bread
00:17:48
okay but why would you need a touch
00:17:51
screen on a toaster
00:17:53
isn't a knob or a button enough
00:17:57
well it's all about convenience you can
00:18:00
control it from your phone or your watch
00:18:02
so you don't even have to be in the
00:18:04
kitchen
00:18:06
but isn't the whole point of making
00:18:08
toast to have a quick and easy breakfast
00:18:12
if you have to spend five minutes
00:18:14
selecting options on a touch screen you
00:18:16
might as well make a full breakfast
00:18:20
I see your point but the convenience
00:18:22
factor is still there and besides it's
00:18:25
just cool to have a high-tech toaster
00:18:29
I guess that's true but I think I'll
00:18:31
stick to my old-fashioned toaster for
00:18:33
now
00:18:35
suit yourself but don't come crying to
00:18:38
me when your toast isn't perfectly
00:18:39
toasted and Instagram worthy
00:18:43
oh no what will I do without my insta
00:18:47
toast
00:18:50
exactly you'll just have to settle for
00:18:52
plain old toast like a caveman
00:18:56
well I guess I'll just have to live with
00:18:59
that at least I won't have to spend a
00:19:01
fortune on a fancy toaster
00:19:05
fair enough but if you change your mind
00:19:07
I know a guy who can get you a good deal
00:19:09
on a smart toaster
00:19:14
[Music]
00:19:30
hey can I ask you a question
00:19:34
sure what's up
00:19:38
I am thinking about going on a cruise
00:19:41
for Spring break but I wanted to get
00:19:43
your opinion
00:19:45
you have been on a lot of cruises right
00:19:49
oh yes cruises are one of my favorite
00:19:52
ways to take a vacation
00:19:55
what locations are you looking at
00:19:57
[Music]
00:19:59
well I definitely want to go somewhere
00:20:01
warm but it doesn't have to be tropical
00:20:05
huh
00:20:06
so Antarctica is out of the question
00:20:10
not for this one I really need some sand
00:20:13
and sunshine after all this snow we have
00:20:15
been getting
00:20:19
I did go on a cruise to Alaska once and
00:20:21
it was a really good time
00:20:25
we had great whale watching but you
00:20:27
really had to bundle up
00:20:30
so that's definitely not the one for you
00:20:33
you can go to lots of warm places on a
00:20:35
cruise ship
00:20:37
yeah I was thinking about the Caribbean
00:20:40
or maybe the Bahamas I want to be able
00:20:42
to spend a day or two at the beach
00:20:46
that's what I really love about cruises
00:20:48
the excursions
00:20:51
you can choose just to get off the boat
00:20:54
and walk around for the day or pick from
00:20:56
a list of local activities
00:21:00
what is your favorite Cruise destination
00:21:04
definitely the Caribbean most cruise
00:21:07
lines have their own private island
00:21:09
which is definitely the most relaxing
00:21:11
Excursion day
00:21:13
sometimes you can still get on and off
00:21:16
the ship as you please but they have
00:21:18
restaurants and activities that are
00:21:19
included in your cruise price on their
00:21:21
Island
00:21:24
wow I did not know about any of that
00:21:28
speaking of food is it really that good
00:21:33
I have watched a couple of YouTube
00:21:34
videos about food on cruises and some of
00:21:37
them look amazing
00:21:40
you need to check out the restaurants
00:21:42
for the different cruise lines and see
00:21:44
what is included or extra charge
00:21:48
I have loved almost every meal I have
00:21:51
ever had on an all-inclusive Cruise
00:21:55
but one time I paid extra for a meal at
00:21:57
a specialty restaurant that accepted
00:21:59
reservations only and it was well worth
00:22:02
the extra cost
00:22:05
thanks for sharing your experiences with
00:22:07
me you really helped me a lot
00:22:10
sure thing enjoy your vacation
00:22:14
[Music]
00:22:30
hey can I get your opinion on something
00:22:36
sure what's up
00:22:39
I just wrote this article about why cats
00:22:41
are better than dogs and I was hoping
00:22:43
you could read it and give me some
00:22:45
feedback
00:22:48
oh my friend you're really asking for it
00:22:51
now you do know that I'm a dog person
00:22:54
right
00:22:59
yes but I'm sure you can appreciate a
00:23:02
good argument in favor of cats
00:23:08
I suppose that's true alright let me
00:23:12
take a look
00:23:16
foreign
00:23:21
so what do you think
00:23:25
well I have to say I think you're
00:23:28
completely wrong
00:23:32
what how could you say that cats are
00:23:36
clearly Superior in every way
00:23:42
clearly Superior
00:23:45
have you even tried taking a cat for a
00:23:48
walk
00:23:50
or getting one to fetch a ball
00:23:53
and don't even get me started on the
00:23:55
whole litter box situation
00:24:00
okay okay I'll admit the dogs are more
00:24:02
trainable but cats are still better
00:24:04
companions
00:24:07
they're more independent and they're
00:24:09
just as affectionate as dogs if not more
00:24:14
I don't know about that
00:24:17
whenever I go to my friend's house with
00:24:20
their cat it always just ignores me and
00:24:22
does its own thing
00:24:26
and have you ever tried to give a cat a
00:24:28
bath it's like wrestling with a greased
00:24:30
Pig
00:24:33
I'll give you that one
00:24:37
but you have to admit that cats are much
00:24:39
cleaner than dogs they don't slobber all
00:24:42
over everything and they groom
00:24:44
themselves
00:24:46
that's true I'll give you that
00:24:50
but at least when a dog licks you you
00:24:52
know it's because they love you
00:24:56
when a cat licks you it's because
00:24:58
they're plotting your demise
00:25:02
hey that's not fair cats can be just as
00:25:05
loving as dogs
00:25:09
all right it's all right
00:25:11
I'll admit that both cats and dogs have
00:25:13
their pros and cons
00:25:17
but in the end I'll always be a dog
00:25:19
person
00:25:21
and I'll always be a cat person I guess
00:25:24
we'll just have to agree to disagree
00:25:29
fair enough and who knows maybe one day
00:25:31
we'll both get a pet that will surprise
00:25:33
us and change our minds
00:25:38
[Music]
00:25:44
listen to the lessons repeatedly to
00:25:46
think in English and automatic speaking
00:25:50
repetition is very very important to
00:25:53
become fluent
00:25:55
you need to speak English fluently
00:25:57
without translating in your head
00:26:00
the words should come out of your mouth
00:26:02
automatically
00:26:04
so this is where the repetition comes in
00:26:09
if you repeat the same vocabulary and
00:26:12
sentences many times you will become a
00:26:15
master of this vocabulary and grammar
00:26:19
so you will be able to use that words
00:26:21
automatically without thinking about
00:26:24
grammar rules and without translating
00:26:26
vocabulary in your head
00:26:30
in order to think in English you must
00:26:33
repeat vocabulary and sentences as much
00:26:35
as you can
00:26:37
after lots of repetition eventually you
00:26:40
will start to think English in your head
00:26:42
and improve your speaking skills
00:26:46
you can practice English whenever and
00:26:49
wherever you want
00:26:52
just listen to our short stories and
00:26:54
answer the easy question out loud
00:26:59
you will improve your listening and
00:27:01
speaking skills fast
00:27:03
[Applause]
