Mitte der 80er Jahre sorgte er erstmals als „falscher Amtsarzt von Flensburg“ für Schlagzeilen. Der angebliche Mediziner nannte sich damals hochtrabend Dr. Dr. Clemens Bartholdy. Mit gefälschten Urkunden und Lebenslauf konnte er den damaligen Amtsleiter Wolfgang Wodarg von sich überzeugen und bekam die Stelle. In Wirklichkeit hieß der doppelte Doktor jedoch Gert Postel und hatte gerade einmal Mittlere Reife so wie Berufserfahrung als Postbote hinter sich: Ein Hochstapler, der sich mit Chuzpe und gefälschten Papieren zum Akademiker geschwindelt hatte. Seitdem führte Gert Postel ein Leben, wie es eigentlich nur aus Romanen bekannt ist. Der Film "Der Hochstapler - Die schwindelerregende Karriere des Postboten Gert Postel" aus dem Jahr 2001 dokumentiert diese ungewöhnliche Laufbahn. So wird deutlich, wie es dem Hochstapler gelang, als Priesteramtstudent eine Privataudienz beim Papst zu erhalten.
