00:00:00
coming up i shake stuff
00:00:04
trouble in paradise the old light is not
00:00:06
going off and buckle up for a proper
00:00:09
engine bay
00:00:14
transformation welcome back to the
00:00:16
eighth installment of project cars rui
00:00:18
in the previous episode we set about
00:00:20
doing a top-end refresh we replaced the
00:00:22
valve stem seals because of the blue
00:00:24
smoke issue up on cold start re-timed
00:00:26
the engine secured banjo bolts replaced
00:00:28
the valve cover gaskets the volley pan
00:00:30
gasket oil pan gasket and cleaned up the
00:00:33
engine bay now we're picking up where we
00:00:35
left off and jumping back into action
00:00:38
reassembly time we have a brand new
00:00:39
water pump coolant hoses belts that we
00:00:42
replaced in the previous episode same
00:00:44
with the pulleys new tensioners o-rings
00:00:46
thermostat and these pipes are made of
00:00:48
steel so i quickly coated them with some
00:00:50
rust card gotta replace this o-ring here
00:01:01
brand new oing going in important to
00:01:03
lube up the o-ring
00:01:06
all right
00:01:12
and now the water pump
00:01:16
[Music]
00:01:23
a bit of silicone grease
00:01:26
water pump going in
00:01:36
and that's the water pump installed
00:01:40
i think now we're going to replace the
00:01:42
tensioners
00:01:48
new one going in
00:01:51
[Music]
00:01:53
you can see that the old one is
00:01:54
collapsed does not bounce back and
00:01:56
provide tension for the belt there you
00:01:58
can see the pin to align the crank
00:01:59
pulley
00:02:01
vibration dampener aka crank pulley
00:02:03
received the lick of paint as well
00:02:12
done pulley going back in
00:02:22
it's one belt in segondo normally you
00:02:25
have to compress these three times fully
00:02:27
when they're brand new so compress it
00:02:31
release it three times caps are going
00:02:34
back on
00:02:39
terminal start going back in
00:02:45
torque for this is 10 millimeters but
00:02:47
i'm just going to go by hand because
00:02:49
i can feel
00:02:51
when i need to stop
00:02:54
i think now i'm going to replace these
00:02:56
vacuum lines here
00:02:59
so i replaced a bunch of vacuum lines
00:03:01
here
00:03:03
and there as well new coolant hose going
00:03:05
in
00:03:07
geez what was that
00:03:10
i love good old coolant hoses just
00:03:13
clamps no stupid plastic
00:03:16
that's the cooling system done
00:03:18
and now quite possibly the most
00:03:20
satisfying part of this restoration
00:03:22
cleaning up these intake manifolds they
00:03:24
are aluminium so they're going to look
00:03:26
spectacular after we're done wiper
00:03:27
blasting them the throttle bodies that
00:03:29
go here they are also aluminium the
00:03:32
housing that is and they will look
00:03:34
spectacular as well but there's
00:03:36
electronics inside gears and stuff and
00:03:38
there's water in the machine i don't
00:03:39
want to mix those two so we're not going
00:03:41
to blast the throttle bodies instead i'm
00:03:43
going to use my old one that's not
00:03:45
working and i use it for experiments so
00:03:47
i'm just going to bolt it up here that
00:03:48
way i can close the holes wherever i can
00:03:51
because i want to minimize the amount of
00:03:52
media that goes inside but still we're
00:03:54
going to thoroughly wash this so i'm
00:03:56
going to go ahead and prep all this and
00:03:57
then we can start blasting this one is
00:03:59
ready for its clash with the aqua blast
00:04:00
cabinet i've blocked everything up here
00:04:02
the little sensor on the back and then i
00:04:04
put foam in here
00:04:06
which will well minimize the amount of
00:04:08
blasting media that goes inside and make
00:04:09
it that much easier to clean
00:04:27
[Music]
00:04:31
[Applause]
00:04:35
i i just i'm so impressed with this
00:04:37
machine it's incredible
00:04:39
[Music]
00:05:49
i think we're done
00:05:54
freaking spotless my man
00:05:57
so i spent a good amount of my life with
00:05:59
the water hose compressed there rinsing
00:06:01
this thing out and now we're gonna dump
00:06:03
it into some water
00:06:08
nice
00:06:09
give it a shake
00:06:13
yeah
00:06:15
right into my socks
00:06:30
i'm going to repeat this process a
00:06:31
couple of more times then use compressed
00:06:33
air a bit more water hose compressed air
00:06:35
then brake cleaner
00:06:36
to get rid of all the moisture and then
00:06:38
another compressed air and it should be
00:06:40
totally dry and blasting media free
00:07:09
this is
00:07:10
i mean
00:07:11
wow
00:07:14
magnifique it didn't look this good from
00:07:16
the factory trust me it didn't
00:07:18
the finish is so nice and smooth this is
00:07:21
by far the best possible finish you can
00:07:23
do for these intake manifolds any
00:07:24
aluminum intake manifolds
00:07:27
all right let's do the other one
00:07:49
i ended up spending more time cleaning
00:07:51
up these intake manifolds there's oil
00:07:53
residue all over inside and that's a
00:07:55
perfect place for media to stick so used
00:07:57
about four or five cans of throttle
00:07:59
cleaner and these long tubes that come
00:08:00
with them and just spray the crap out of
00:08:02
them then more water break cleaner
00:08:05
compressed air dry them and repeat that
00:08:06
many times and there's no chance there's
00:08:08
any media left inside
00:08:10
and these are the notorious intake
00:08:12
manifold gaskets and they're famous for
00:08:14
leaking because they're made of some
00:08:15
sort of rubber that becomes brittle over
00:08:17
time and they start leaking
00:08:19
so in the past you saw me using rancho
00:08:21
seal sealant to seal them up which works
00:08:23
great it's a cheap and functional way to
00:08:25
solve this issue but this time around i
00:08:27
wanted to try a more elegant solution to
00:08:29
this problem and i ended up buying these
00:08:31
gaskets from extra classics dot d e
00:08:34
and it's actually rather simple gasket
00:08:36
goes on here the big one goes on the
00:08:38
back and it's gonna seal this up and for
00:08:40
the nuts i'm using a socket stuffed with
00:08:42
small magnets so i can pick up a nut
00:08:44
like this and it's not gonna drop and i
00:08:46
can maneuver it underneath the intake
00:08:47
manifold and get them all in place
00:08:50
[Music]
00:09:07
must forget the brackets
00:09:10
this is so you can lift the engine out
00:09:12
of the car
00:09:22
return fuel line with brand new hoses
00:09:37
next up fuel injectors and i decided to
00:09:39
go with brand new ones i could send
00:09:41
these out for cleaning but after 34
00:09:43
years of use it's time for brand new
00:09:44
injectors these are not terribly
00:09:46
expensive around 300 or so euros for
00:09:49
original bosch injectors and given that
00:09:51
we have 12 of them that's not too bad
00:09:53
and we're also going to replace fuel
00:09:55
pressure regulators first we're going to
00:09:56
clean the rail a little bit
00:10:11
again starting to sound like a porn
00:10:15
i guess if someone walks into the room
00:10:17
and they're not seeing what you're
00:10:18
watching
00:10:20
well it's gonna be awkward
00:10:23
now you gotta replace the fuel pressure
00:10:24
regulator
00:10:29
that's the thing removed there's sand
00:10:32
there
00:10:35
okay let's compare the new one and the
00:10:37
old one the only difference between new
00:10:39
fuel pressure regulator and the old one
00:10:41
is this lip here you can see it's a bit
00:10:43
thinner on the new unit but height wise
00:10:45
they're exactly the same so the o-ring
00:10:46
will still seal and we can clamp it in
00:10:48
place and spec wise they're also exactly
00:10:50
the same first we need to lube up this
00:10:52
o-ring and for that we're going to use
00:10:53
vaseline normally we would use silicone
00:10:55
grease but silicone and fuel system
00:10:57
don't mix together and these o-rings as
00:10:59
well as the o-rings on the fuel
00:11:00
injectors they're resistant to fuel so a
00:11:02
little bit of vaseline can do it any
00:11:04
harm
00:11:22
brand new stainless steel clamp
00:11:25
and this is oe cool line fuel hose
00:11:28
heat resistant up to 125
00:11:31
degrees celsius
00:11:33
so very good quality and that's one fuel
00:11:36
rail ready to go in
00:11:44
fuel injectors installed the throttle
00:11:46
bodies we have to open them up and clean
00:11:48
them on the inside but as you can see
00:11:50
from the outside they also look rather
00:11:52
disgusting and this is not going to go
00:11:53
well with our shiny intake manifolds as
00:11:56
i said i can't put them into the vapor
00:11:57
blasting cabinet because water instead
00:11:59
we're going to use my small soda
00:12:01
blasting thing from hazard this is not
00:12:03
that expensive around 100 euros you just
00:12:06
fill it up with soda blasting media
00:12:08
hook it up to a compressor and start
00:12:10
blasting so anyone at home can use this
00:12:12
and if you're a member of the communist
00:12:14
party i'm sorry i meant green party know
00:12:17
that this is environmentally friendly
00:12:19
once you're done blasting you can just
00:12:20
rinse it off and it's going to dissolve
00:12:22
with water and that's it it's also good
00:12:24
for the soil
00:12:30
nice isn't it
00:12:40
[Music]
00:12:58
this is the early m70 throttle body
00:13:00
which means he has normal screws so you
00:13:02
can open it up easily the later ones
00:13:05
like this one has the stupid anti-temper
00:13:07
screws which can be a bit of a pain to
00:13:09
remove
00:13:13
this is a strong magnet inside so you
00:13:15
got to pull it out firmly
00:13:19
like that no it is a bit dirty so this
00:13:22
is the thing that we need to clean the
00:13:23
commentator all right so now i'm going
00:13:24
to pull the brushes back
00:13:27
that one seems stuck
00:13:30
okay that's removed
00:13:31
yeah this one is stuck so that's what we
00:13:33
need to clean
00:13:35
see
00:13:39
this should move
00:13:41
much easier than that sometimes you get
00:13:43
stuck
00:13:46
look at that one
00:13:48
and of course here as well this is just
00:13:52
looking really dirty
00:13:55
look at that it's gonna benefit so much
00:13:57
from cleaning these sometimes if you
00:13:59
have running problems on these engines
00:14:01
just clean the throttle bodies
00:14:03
you'll be surprised how much
00:14:05
better the idle is gonna be and overall
00:14:07
how much better the car is gonna work
00:14:10
all right so now i'm gonna get some
00:14:11
sandpaper and gently polish that
00:14:18
and that's nice and clean
00:14:20
put that on the side and continue with
00:14:22
this now we need to remove that thing
00:14:25
three screws
00:14:40
be very careful not to damage these if
00:14:42
you do that it's gonna be real bad put
00:14:44
that on the side for now and now we're
00:14:46
gonna clean the brushes first gentle
00:14:48
compress there
00:14:50
also do not put brake cleaner or alcohol
00:14:52
or anything on this surface here just
00:14:55
clean dry q-tips and that's enough there
00:14:57
but this here the brushes we gotta use
00:14:59
some brake cleaner
00:15:01
or alcohol whatever you have
00:15:08
that's now nice and clean just look
00:15:10
how easily
00:15:12
the brushes move now
00:15:15
so this is a very combination on these
00:15:17
throttle bodies just filth and dirt
00:15:19
inside
00:15:20
that you need to clean and it's going to
00:15:22
work so much better so now we're going
00:15:23
to clean here
00:15:27
that's all nice and clean inside and
00:15:28
we're ready to reassemble
00:15:32
so now we're going to retract the
00:15:34
brushes
00:15:38
put that in
00:15:42
like that
00:15:43
push back the brushes
00:15:48
by the way you can go a lot further
00:15:50
cleaning the stuff up you can remove
00:15:52
this plate and get to the gears in the
00:15:53
back but in my experience i've never had
00:15:56
to do that
00:15:57
and i'll carefully put it back together
00:15:59
but the magnet is gonna try and pull the
00:16:00
commentator out
00:16:02
so
00:16:04
you gotta do this gently and quickly as
00:16:06
well
00:16:16
sometimes they're so dirty inside that
00:16:18
this flap won't even open
00:16:20
or it'll get stuck somewhere along the
00:16:21
way and that's it pretty simple stuff
00:16:23
and it'll make a world of difference i'm
00:16:25
going to do the same with the other one
00:16:26
and then we're going to put this back on
00:16:28
the car
00:16:31
your gasket nice good and tight
00:16:39
all right now we're at the point where
00:16:41
we need to verify that there are no
00:16:42
vacuum leaks if there are this engine is
00:16:44
never going to run right so i'm going to
00:16:46
break out the smoke machine
00:16:50
and there's the smoke
00:16:53
all right
00:16:55
let's see are the new gaskets sealing
00:16:58
properly
00:17:01
oh
00:17:03
major league
00:17:06
major league our new
00:17:08
gaskets are not sealing properly
00:17:12
isn't that slap mr really fantastic well
00:17:14
guess what we're gonna do now let's see
00:17:16
if it's the same with the other one no
00:17:18
it's leaking like crazy over there well
00:17:19
at least good thing i checked we could
00:17:21
have started the car and it would run
00:17:22
poorly all right it's disassembly time
00:17:27
so there you can perfectly see the
00:17:29
gasket was not cut properly and you can
00:17:31
see it on the gasket there where it
00:17:32
leaked like crazy yeah that one over
00:17:34
there was also not cut properly and it
00:17:35
was very close to leaking i didn't think
00:17:38
it would make difference because the
00:17:39
surface is a lot bigger than that but
00:17:40
clearly it makes all the difference
00:17:43
and makes it not seal so we have a
00:17:44
couple more here that were leaking as
00:17:46
well princess hill for the win i've used
00:17:48
this many times and even disassembled
00:17:49
the intake manifolds after resealed them
00:17:52
again with this thing and never had any
00:17:53
issues this stuff is very good
00:17:56
it hardens really nice and it's elastic
00:17:58
so it's not gonna leak there's no way
00:18:02
so apply the thin layer on the gasket
00:18:03
side as well
00:18:05
and now we can install it
00:18:13
apply the thin layer rhinestone seal on
00:18:15
this side as well
00:18:16
and now we can put it back in
00:18:24
back to where we were earlier i'm going
00:18:25
to leave this for a minute to cure and
00:18:27
then we're going to check for vacuum
00:18:28
leaks again in the meantime we can focus
00:18:30
on the ignition system we have brand new
00:18:32
ignition wires ignition coils and donut
00:18:34
sensors first we need to install the
00:18:37
donut sensor aka cylinder notification
00:18:39
sensor on wire number six and twelve
00:18:43
this is silicon spray slide the boot
00:18:45
over
00:18:48
now i need to unscrew the end
00:18:55
there's a wood screw inside and that's
00:18:56
how it connects to the ignition wire
00:19:00
perfect and now comes the donut sensor
00:19:03
it's important that the prongs of this
00:19:05
point towards the distributor cap so you
00:19:07
install it
00:19:09
like that
00:19:11
now we're going to cut a little bit off
00:19:14
that way we have fresh piece of wire now
00:19:16
we can put back the boot
00:19:19
and now we simply screw back the end on
00:19:27
now we need to verify that the
00:19:28
connection is good but now we need our
00:19:30
multimeter set it to measure resistance
00:19:33
ohms
00:19:36
and that's success it should be around
00:19:39
six kilo ohms additionally you can also
00:19:42
regulate just to make sure the
00:19:43
connection doesn't drop
00:19:46
and that's one wire done
00:19:47
just slide back the boot
00:19:52
now i'm going to do the same with the
00:19:53
other one now we need to swap them with
00:19:55
the old ones
00:19:58
very good
00:20:04
now i like to verify that all of them
00:20:06
are indeed working mission coil wire
00:20:08
should be around two kilo ohms
00:20:10
perfect wire number one round six
00:20:14
confirmed all of them are good and this
00:20:16
is ready to be installed replace the
00:20:17
ignition coil
00:20:26
this is all preventive maintenance
00:20:29
all of this stuff is 34 years old
00:20:31
and could use a refresh
00:20:44
nice
00:20:48
the ignition wire is going in
00:20:52
got it here click
00:20:54
the distributor cap is brand new we
00:20:56
replaced that in the previous episode
00:21:00
perfect all right we are ready to do the
00:21:02
smoke test again
00:21:06
so it's coming out here on the glove but
00:21:08
that doesn't matter
00:21:11
the gaskets
00:21:13
need to seal properly high five buddy so
00:21:16
yeah the glove is leaking but that
00:21:17
doesn't matter as long as the gasket is
00:21:19
not leaking there
00:21:21
yeah you can see it's sealing properly
00:21:23
now all right
00:21:25
so we know that one is good let's check
00:21:27
this one here
00:21:32
oh that's a lotta
00:21:34
go away my glove is leaking again
00:21:37
there as well
00:21:39
and this time around the intake manifold
00:21:41
gaskets are sealing properly so if
00:21:43
you're doing this job i highly recommend
00:21:44
going with
00:21:46
rhinestone seal all right we can proceed
00:21:48
with reassembly
00:21:50
good stuff
00:21:52
there you go
00:21:55
so that's all plugged back in injectors
00:22:02
we're going to replace this coolant hose
00:22:03
here
00:22:08
enter brand new expansion tank so
00:22:11
connect the hose here where did the
00:22:13
clamp go brand new coolant hose
00:22:16
perfect
00:22:19
route the hose there
00:22:22
for example
00:22:24
there
00:22:26
this is the vent hose
00:22:29
fan lowest setting
00:22:31
temperature
00:22:32
highest and now we're going to replenish
00:22:34
it with coolant
00:22:38
gotta replace the fan clutch
00:22:41
this is also part of preventing
00:22:42
maintenance
00:22:48
got to clean that
00:22:57
a bit cleaner okay the same with the
00:22:58
bolts this is why everything takes so
00:23:01
long because i'm cleaning everything
00:23:04
replacing the fan clutch is very
00:23:05
important especially when it's 34 years
00:23:08
old because if it explodes it's going to
00:23:11
take out your hood your coolant hoses
00:23:13
belts everything so this is actually
00:23:15
cheap preventive maintenance
00:23:20
clean fan shot going in
00:23:34
just give it
00:23:36
that and nothing more these are the
00:23:38
original bosch mass airflow sensors and
00:23:40
they're the only ones that work on this
00:23:42
engine there are loads of aftermarket
00:23:43
alternatives but none of them work i
00:23:46
actually tried after market premium
00:23:47
project dubai and i ended up having
00:23:49
transmission issues and as soon as i put
00:23:51
back bosch units the problem went away
00:23:53
m70 it's even pickier because these are
00:23:56
very old-school and very special so if
00:23:58
you put anything else it's just not
00:23:59
going to work properly
00:24:01
thankfully nowadays you can actually
00:24:02
service under parodies extra classics is
00:24:04
offering that service so they tested
00:24:06
both of these and one of them was out of
00:24:08
spec so they did some stuff to it and
00:24:10
brought it within spec you can see the
00:24:12
results here and it says good so we're
00:24:14
safe to install it and they actually
00:24:16
also tested the math cleaning product on
00:24:19
these particular maps and it makes zero
00:24:21
difference if the math is out of spec
00:24:23
and not working properly math cleaning
00:24:25
thing it's not going to do anything and
00:24:27
i've seen way too many times people
00:24:28
throw these away and install cheap
00:24:30
aftermarket ones don't do that just have
00:24:32
the service this was not that expensive
00:24:35
around 100 euros and you're gonna have a
00:24:36
perfectly running engine after that
00:24:44
the cover
00:24:46
perfect give a bit of shine
00:24:50
all right now we just need to add oil
00:24:52
and we are ready to start first we're
00:24:53
going to feed it 10w40 synthetic then
00:24:55
we're going to do engine flush we saw
00:24:56
that the engine was a little bit sludgy
00:24:58
so i definitely want to do that and
00:25:00
finally have synthetic 10 w40 with mos 2
00:25:03
additive you got to remember that these
00:25:05
engines were developed to run on mineral
00:25:06
oil and they actually prefer it out of a
00:25:08
full synthetic so this is a really good
00:25:10
oil to run in that engine
00:25:16
another question that you always ask
00:25:17
yourself whenever you've done some work
00:25:19
on the engine
00:25:20
does it still work
00:25:21
only one way to find out
00:25:24
[Applause]
00:25:28
oh wow
00:25:37
the your light is not going off so
00:25:39
the oil pressure light came on
00:25:42
it should go off within a couple of
00:25:44
seconds the oil level sensor wires are
00:25:46
bad but i don't think that should affect
00:25:47
it
00:25:48
and uh i just want to make sure that we
00:25:50
do indeed have oil pressure before we
00:25:51
run it for longer
00:25:53
because that would be bad
00:25:58
nope so the engine sounds good but the
00:26:00
red oil
00:26:01
light is on so let me do some
00:26:04
checking because we didn't do anything
00:26:05
to mess up with the oil pressure all
00:26:07
right so i believe i found the issue i
00:26:09
thought it was something electrical or
00:26:11
false alarm but
00:26:12
nope
00:26:13
as you can see i removed the old pan and
00:26:15
there's a valve here or piston or
00:26:17
whatever that regulates i believe the
00:26:20
old pressure
00:26:21
and that thing is stuck
00:26:23
so what happened i believe is i used
00:26:25
brake cleaner to clean this up a little
00:26:26
bit before i put the old pen back
00:26:29
and then i washed out all of the oil in
00:26:30
here and then it just kind of seized
00:26:32
inside because it needs to be lubricated
00:26:34
in order to move up and down and that's
00:26:36
why we have our oil pressure light on so
00:26:38
now i'm going to see if i can remove it
00:26:39
clean that up lubricate it and that
00:26:42
should fix our issue pretty frustrating
00:26:43
but
00:26:44
yet another lesson we learned
00:26:47
that seized solid in there so we need to
00:26:49
remove the oil pump there's no way
00:26:51
around it
00:27:06
okay and that's our oil pump
00:27:15
still doesn't want to come out
00:27:26
there it is
00:27:29
so that's the thing that was stuck
00:27:30
pretty grimy
00:27:35
sid wrap it's a mess around here but i
00:27:37
ended up using fine sandpaper rolled up
00:27:40
and then polished the inside of this
00:27:41
thing and
00:27:43
now it's sliding super easily and smooth
00:27:45
so that's what you should do before it
00:27:47
was completely stuck so i think this was
00:27:49
kind of inevitable regardless of me
00:27:52
spraining the brake cleaner or not if it
00:27:53
was sitting for a very long time this
00:27:55
would probably happen but me using berry
00:27:57
cleaner definitely contributed huge
00:27:59
lesson for me and this is something that
00:28:00
i'm to check pretty much on every m70
00:28:03
from now on just to see if this thing is
00:28:05
working properly now i'm going to dump
00:28:06
some fresh oil through it
00:28:10
like that goes all the way in and comes
00:28:12
out super
00:28:14
smoothly this thing up as well
00:28:21
clean the spring
00:28:24
now i need to compress that
00:28:26
and then get this clip in there to hold
00:28:29
it
00:28:30
this
00:28:35
oh
00:28:36
nearly
00:28:40
yes
00:28:42
it's in give it more oil
00:28:46
and then time to put this back on
00:28:52
sprocket on green thread locker
00:28:56
for the nut
00:29:01
all right so i'm going to put back the
00:29:03
old pan replenish it with oil and start
00:29:05
it again i should mention that i didn't
00:29:06
spray brake cleaner directly at the oil
00:29:08
pump i'm not that crazy but rather
00:29:10
around it to clean the oil pan and then
00:29:12
i followed up with fogging oil for men
00:29:14
but i guess enough brake cleaner got in
00:29:15
there and it was sitting for two weeks
00:29:17
so it seized up
00:29:19
so if you're working on the bottom end
00:29:20
of this engine or generally have the oil
00:29:22
and oil pan removed that's something to
00:29:24
keep in mind i sure will
00:29:27
so let's try this again
00:29:33
and it's off
00:29:36
sounds very good
00:29:42
oh yeah
00:29:43
working smooth as butter this is a nice
00:29:45
cold start
00:29:49
so i'm gonna let it warm up and then
00:29:51
we're gonna do the engine flush i think
00:29:52
i spilled some oil there right on the
00:29:54
intake manifold so that's just burning
00:29:56
off now
00:29:57
yep coolant level is good it's getting
00:30:00
nice and toasty
00:30:01
idle is perfect
00:30:08
this is what i wanted for this engine
00:30:10
to work smooth as butter
00:30:12
all right it's nice and warm
00:30:15
shut it off and then we can add
00:30:18
engine flush moto lung
00:30:20
so engine flush going in cheerio my
00:30:23
friend
00:30:27
[Music] [Applause]
00:30:32
starts really nice 10 minutes and then
00:30:35
we're going to drain the oil
00:30:39
that should do it
00:30:42
first we're going to remove the oil
00:30:43
filter so that the oil in the oil filter
00:30:45
housing can drain into the open
00:30:50
that's hot
00:30:55
all right this was
00:30:58
fresh oil
00:31:00
let's see what it looks like now
00:31:04
definitely blacker than before
00:31:06
so engine flush definitely did its job
00:31:09
and this is gentle cleaning it's not
00:31:11
gonna make your engine squeaky clean but
00:31:12
rather dissolve the sludge and just
00:31:15
gently clean it because you don't want
00:31:17
to clean it aggressively either because
00:31:19
then all that sludge and small particles
00:31:22
can clog all of the small passages in
00:31:24
the engines so i'm going to leave it to
00:31:25
drain overnight i got to go home for
00:31:27
dinner and then tomorrow morning we're
00:31:29
going to pick up where we left off good
00:31:31
morning
00:31:32
this finished draining
00:31:35
i cut open the oil filter and this was a
00:31:36
brand new one before we did the engine
00:31:38
flush and you can just see how much
00:31:39
lodge it caught
00:31:41
i always like to pre-loop the oil filter
00:31:46
oil is great because of the mos2
00:31:48
additive
00:31:54
[Applause]
00:31:57
starts so good
00:32:05
so cool driving without the hood
00:32:14
tools in the trunk flying
00:32:16
but the power is there
00:32:19
my butt dino says so
00:32:21
there you have it boys and girls a
00:32:22
perfectly running m70 12-cylinder engine
00:32:27
it's running super nice
00:32:35
perfect title
00:32:45
loads of condensation which is totally
00:32:47
normal since the car hasn't been driven
00:32:48
properly in a while
00:32:56
i am a very happy man now
00:33:01
[Music]
00:33:03
[Applause]
00:33:06
i love that start
00:33:09
nothing to see here
00:33:11
just a perfectly running v12 engine
00:33:14
balancing
00:33:16
it's why you're a coin
00:33:29
so
00:33:40
tell me that's not impressive
00:33:42
all right enough messing around i'm
00:33:43
gonna let it sit for a few days and then
00:33:45
we're gonna start again and see if
00:33:46
there's blue smoke coming out of the
00:33:48
exhaust hopefully not
00:33:50
hopefully not so yesterday looking
00:33:52
through the pictures i realized i forgot
00:33:54
to blast the old filter cap that's
00:33:56
unacceptable so let's fix it
00:33:59
maybe spritz up the bolt as well
00:34:08
the bolt is now nice and pretty as well
00:34:12
cold start time after
00:34:14
two days let's see if there's any blue
00:34:16
smoke coming out of the exhaust
00:34:18
it usually comes out thin and very blue
00:34:21
so let's see
00:34:22
[Applause]
00:34:28
that's nice
00:34:30
it's real nice
00:34:33
nothing
00:34:37
man that cold start is nice
00:34:41
now i'm going to spain to chase more of
00:34:42
these broken thirds and i'm going to be
00:34:44
gone for about four or five days so when
00:34:46
i come back we're gonna do a cold start
00:34:48
again
00:34:49
and normally after two three days i
00:34:51
would always see blue smoke coming out
00:34:52
of the exhaust so if i don't see
00:34:54
anything i'm gonna consider this issue
00:34:56
resolved buenos estoy back from espana
00:35:00
didn't bring the good water with me
00:35:02
the car has been sitting for
00:35:05
five days now
00:35:06
so let's start it and see what's what
00:35:08
would it cough up some smoke
00:35:17
okay
00:35:19
very good
00:35:21
very good
00:35:24
no smoke no blue smoke that is
00:35:27
that's excellent
00:35:29
typically i would always get something
00:35:30
after three or four days even two days
00:35:33
sometimes one day loving that
00:35:36
that's condensation and that's totally
00:35:38
normal but in the past when i started
00:35:39
after five days you would just get blue
00:35:41
smoke for about 10-15 seconds thin blue
00:35:44
smoke but now nothing which is really
00:35:46
good
00:35:52
nice idol
00:35:58
perfect cold start
00:36:03
very nice and smooth
00:36:10
listen to that exhaust
00:36:19
excellent
00:36:22
man i'm so happy now
00:36:24
good engine
00:36:26
[Music]
00:37:14
this engine bay is sitting very pretty
00:37:16
just lovely
00:37:18
and the engine itself working superbly
00:37:21
smooth and that was my goal with these
00:37:23
two last episodes to have this thing
00:37:25
work as smooth as it possibly can maybe
00:37:28
even as good as it did on its first day
00:37:30
not sure if i would go that far but it
00:37:32
does work really smooth and as far as
00:37:34
the blue smoke goes i'm not going to
00:37:36
stress about it too much but the next
00:37:38
thing i have to do is drive it so when
00:37:40
you're going to friend to come with red
00:37:41
number plates we're going to put it on
00:37:43
the car drive it for about 30 40
00:37:45
kilometers for everything to burn off
00:37:47
then i'm going to park it up for about a
00:37:48
week or two start it again and just
00:37:50
confirm there's no more blue smoke and
00:37:52
then the next step for this project is
00:37:54
underneath we got to do complete front
00:37:56
suspension replace the steering box
00:37:58
that's leaking or refurbish it service
00:38:01
the transmission the differential is
00:38:03
leaking rear suspension needs a bit of
00:38:05
work and exhaust needs to be replaced
00:38:07
and that's pretty much going to conclude
00:38:08
the mechanical part of this restoration
00:38:11
and then we have the usual interior
00:38:12
exterior but as far as the next episode
00:38:15
on it i'm not sure alpina b7 engine just
00:38:17
arrived so that's my project for the
00:38:19
next few weeks we gotta assemble that
00:38:21
and put it back in the car and i've been
00:38:22
getting about five million messages
00:38:24
every week about it so it's coming just
00:38:27
be patient i'm not gonna rush
00:38:28
reassembling that engine everything has
00:38:30
to go perfectly smooth the next video is
00:38:32
actually going to be a tour of a defunct
00:38:35
bmw dealership in spain we have about
00:38:38
20 or so cars that were left to ride for
00:38:41
about
00:38:42
15 20 some even 30 years so it's going
00:38:44
to be a really fascinating video because
00:38:46
it's not only bmws it's all sorts of
00:38:48
cars
00:38:49
and um i can't wait to bring you that
00:38:51
video
00:38:52
but as always thank you very much for
00:38:54
watching i hope that you enjoyed this
00:38:55
video if you did maybe give it a
00:38:58
thumbs up
00:38:59
possibly even subscribe if you haven't
00:39:01
that would be really nice and i would
00:39:02
appreciate that and i'll see you very
00:39:04
soon
00:39:21
you
