00:00:08
hey there my name is chuck black and
00:00:09
welcome to my studio today we're going
00:00:11
to be painting some rolling ridges on a
00:00:14
foggy morning and we're gonna have the
00:00:16
sunlight shining through so i hope you
00:00:18
join us we're gonna be using golden
00:00:20
fluid acrylics on a 16 by 20 inch
00:00:22
stretched canvas and of course remember
00:00:24
i always give away a free hand signed
00:00:26
art print every week to one of my email
00:00:29
subscribers and all you have to do to
00:00:30
sign up is click this card right here
00:00:33
all right let's get started
00:00:35
all right so we've already got a bit of
00:00:37
a mess here going with our colors but
00:00:39
we're going to be using titanium white
00:00:41
cerulean blue
00:00:42
cadmium orange
00:00:44
prussian blue
00:00:45
we've got some
00:00:47
primary cyan
00:00:48
and then carbon black and everything's
00:00:50
starting to run here and that's just
00:00:51
those golden fluid acrylics
00:00:54
all right so i'm going to take some
00:00:55
white
00:00:56
i'm using a half inch filbert brush
00:01:00
flat brush will work
00:01:02
whatever works best for you
00:01:04
maybe some
00:01:07
blocking in some larger areas i'm going
00:01:09
to take some cadbury and some white
00:01:12
cadbury orange i'm sorry and some white
00:01:16
we're going to start with just a light
00:01:18
light peachy color
00:01:25
using cross hatches
00:01:27
making x
00:01:28
x motions
00:01:31
getting some of that on there in the
00:01:33
center
00:01:34
stand
00:01:35
love that upper half though
00:01:54
okay now i'm gonna grab
00:01:55
some white
00:01:56
get some more of that
00:01:58
some more orange
00:02:00
we're gonna grab the red here
00:02:03
look how rich that red is
00:02:08
and some more orange
00:02:10
i don't want it to be too pink
00:02:17
that's probably about right
00:02:20
and do your best to kind of feather it
00:02:22
into that orange color
00:02:24
if it's not perfect
00:02:27
that's all right too
00:02:32
again you can see i'm using these
00:02:35
crosshatch motions
00:02:43
kinda going around the outside of this
00:02:44
orange color we have on
00:03:08
okay
00:03:10
now we got this color here let's mix
00:03:12
some more of that trying to make some
00:03:14
more of that color
00:03:24
yeah that's close to it
00:03:26
then what we're going to do
00:03:28
is pick up
00:03:30
some prussian blue
00:03:36
some black and white
00:03:39
i'm just going to see how this goes here
00:03:41
this is more of a gray scale
00:03:43
let's grab some blue
00:03:47
and some white
00:03:49
i'm just trying to find a good color
00:03:56
and we can test that so i'm going to
00:03:58
test it up in the corner here just see
00:04:00
how kind of
00:04:02
how that compares to what we have
00:04:05
maybe i'll put some primary cyan in
00:04:07
there and some more prussian blue
00:04:10
to move this to the blue scale
00:04:14
so there's probably a little of this
00:04:16
color in this
00:04:28
that's a grayish
00:04:35
let's just get that on there and we'll
00:04:36
let this dry
00:04:38
i'd say the contrast is right
00:04:40
i'm not really happy with the color
00:04:43
but it's close so we're going to go with
00:04:45
it
00:04:54
now this is going to look rough
00:04:56
as it goes into that pink color
00:05:00
because naturally when we add a dark
00:05:01
color over a light one it's always hard
00:05:03
to blend that in
00:05:06
so we're just going to let it dry
00:05:16
okay
00:05:19
that's not bad i want to wash the brush
00:05:22
i think what we want to do
00:05:29
i think what we want to do is
00:05:31
try to get more of a violet color
00:05:34
let's take some black i'm sorry some
00:05:36
prussian blue
00:05:38
and some quinacridone
00:05:41
this is going to be pretty violet
00:05:43
but we'll add some white to it
00:05:49
some more blue some more white
00:05:59
i'm just looking for that right color
00:06:03
i'll try this
00:06:06
now that's probably more the color and
00:06:08
see how we can just kind of feather that
00:06:10
right into the color
00:06:11
that we already have on there
00:06:25
yeah like it's
00:06:27
a bit more vibrant this is gonna go good
00:06:29
with our pink
00:06:34
i'm just kind of filling that in there
00:06:36
overlaying it over what we have
00:06:42
now
00:06:43
right between these or start to blend
00:06:45
that out
00:06:48
so up here
00:06:50
we're gonna want to grab some more white
00:06:52
i've got a real mess going on my palette
00:06:54
now
00:06:55
that's just kind of how it goes
00:06:57
sometimes
00:07:00
grab some white
00:07:03
and i'm gonna get that white on my brush
00:07:08
i'm adding some pink to that
00:07:27
see how that will just
00:07:29
start to feather those two colors
00:07:31
together
00:07:49
all right
00:07:52
i'm gonna wash the brush and i'm gonna
00:07:54
switch
00:07:55
this is the
00:07:56
scumbler brush by artist loft it's a
00:07:59
round brush
00:08:01
and i'm going to grab
00:08:04
trying to make some of that color we did
00:08:05
immediately originally
00:08:07
it's kind of an orangish pink
00:08:24
i'm going to start breaking this up
00:08:41
and i just want these colors i want
00:08:44
more of this pinkish orange to be on
00:08:46
there
00:08:58
and i think i'm just going to leave this
00:08:59
part for now and then we'll just move
00:09:01
further down
00:09:02
let's let this dry
00:09:07
okay
00:09:08
i'm gonna go back to that filter brush
00:09:15
dry it and
00:09:19
let's mix some more
00:09:23
kind of this bluish
00:09:25
somewhat violet color
00:09:35
let's get a tree line
00:09:42
i want this tree line to be kind of up
00:09:43
here
00:09:44
you might have to add more pink up here
00:09:47
i'll come down
00:10:09
scrub that color in
00:10:12
just worried about the top edge not the
00:10:14
bottom
00:10:36
okay
00:10:37
that's how we got that
00:10:40
now we're gonna kind of start off with
00:10:42
the same color
00:10:44
we're gonna go back we're gonna grab
00:10:45
more prussian blue
00:10:50
still picking up some of that violet
00:10:57
not overly concerned about the violet at
00:10:59
this point
00:11:00
and we're gonna get another ridge here
00:11:02
and that's gonna come down
00:11:12
you notice how this is a little bit
00:11:14
darker
00:11:15
than this ridge here
00:11:17
so it's going to appear closer to the
00:11:19
viewer
00:11:25
get that paint on there
00:11:27
cover it real nice
00:11:46
i have to mix up some more of that color
00:11:57
just blocking it in
00:12:18
all right we'll stick with that
00:12:20
and we'll go for another edge but this
00:12:23
time we're going to start off with the
00:12:24
same color
00:12:26
we're going to darken it even more
00:12:29
just grabbing that blue
00:12:33
maybe some of that red
00:12:38
and we'll grab
00:12:39
some primary cyan we'll add to this
00:12:42
ridge
00:12:44
let's mix up a lot of this color because
00:12:46
we're probably going to need more
00:12:53
and this one let's start down low
00:12:55
so we can kind of
00:12:57
get that in the right spot
00:13:00
so you want that to cross right where
00:13:02
that white starts to show
00:13:04
right there
00:13:10
now we're semi-worried about the top
00:13:12
but we're not overly worried about it
00:13:14
because we're going to want to add some
00:13:15
tree detail
00:13:17
so we're just laying in the idea of the
00:13:19
trees right now
00:13:36
and same thing let's just feather that
00:13:38
down
00:14:30
okay
00:14:32
looking good
00:14:34
just get some more of that color i want
00:14:37
to darken up that spot up here
00:14:44
and right in there just want that all to
00:14:46
be a fairly even color at this point
00:14:52
perfect
00:14:55
i think we can get this one tree here a
00:14:57
little darker
00:14:58
all right
00:15:03
that looks pretty good now you can see
00:15:05
these effects
00:15:06
starting to really take hold
00:15:10
now we're gonna get let's get one more
00:15:12
ridge
00:15:13
let's get one more ridge right here
00:15:17
darker yet so we're going to grab more
00:15:19
of the primary cyan
00:15:20
a lot more of the pressure blue
00:15:23
some of the white
00:15:24
now here's we're gonna make a new change
00:15:26
we're gonna grab some black
00:15:37
okay
00:15:39
start in the middle
00:15:41
yeah that'll be
00:15:42
that'll be a good color a little darker
00:15:49
i'm going to need to get more paint on
00:15:51
my palette i'm running out
00:16:07
i need more prussian blue
00:16:11
pull that out
00:16:16
i think we still got some cyan here yeah
00:16:24
get a good mix there
00:16:26
some of that black and naturally we'll
00:16:28
pick up some of the white on the palette
00:17:07
and drop it down
00:17:09
all right
00:17:10
then
00:17:12
leave some of this white here we're
00:17:13
going to bring it down further down here
00:17:16
that's where i'm going to grab a lot of
00:17:17
pressure in blue and black
00:17:19
this will be a
00:17:21
dark spot down low
00:17:31
these darker colors
00:17:33
might see the paint strokes
00:17:36
because it's harder to cover a really
00:17:40
richly saturated color like this there's
00:17:42
a lot of blue
00:17:45
when we get darker some of those lines
00:17:46
will show so we might have to put
00:17:48
another layer on some of this and as
00:17:50
well as some other areas but
00:17:52
great start at this point
00:17:56
just trying to get that as even as i can
00:18:11
okay
00:18:12
now we're gonna have one more ridge
00:18:14
coming through here
00:18:18
and this one
00:18:22
we want to be
00:18:24
close to this color
00:18:48
tall ridge right here
00:19:00
and it's going to come way down fast
00:19:18
so
00:19:27
now let's take before we get
00:19:30
too carried away
00:19:31
let's grab some white
00:19:36
picking up some weight we got
00:19:38
just enough here
00:19:46
right here
00:19:51
and mix that white in
00:19:53
and blend it this way
00:20:16
all right that will work for now
00:20:19
might have to work on that some more
00:20:25
now watch that lighter color
00:21:08
now you see how that lighter color
00:21:10
separates these two ridges
00:21:12
might look like fog
00:21:13
but now we're getting that really draws
00:21:17
that that ridge right here closer it
00:21:19
adds depth perception between these two
00:21:22
it's still the same color ridges
00:21:24
but we've got this gradient of a lighter
00:21:26
color and that just separates those
00:21:28
really makes it pop
00:21:34
just continue filling in this color down
00:21:36
here
00:21:46
and i want to let this dry
00:21:49
well no
00:21:50
i think we can work on a couple spots
00:21:54
just finish with this part here
00:21:57
okay
00:22:00
i might have to work again on blending
00:22:02
some of these foreground colors
00:22:06
i'm gonna wash it i'm gonna switch back
00:22:09
to that round brush that stumbling brush
00:22:11
just getting the water out of it
00:22:17
that's pretty dry
00:22:24
and we're to want some white
00:22:39
i can already tell i want to draw
00:22:42
this
00:22:43
lighter color i want to push it further
00:22:45
up into here but we still probably just
00:22:47
want to let that dry for right now
00:22:50
but we're going to kind of do the same
00:22:52
thing
00:22:55
just mixing some colors up here
00:22:57
white
00:22:58
prussian blue
00:23:01
again a little moisture on there
00:23:04
and then i'm going to get most of it off
00:23:08
but
00:23:09
still has some of it still has some of
00:23:11
it
00:23:12
give it a test here
00:23:15
there that's a
00:23:17
that's a little lighter
00:23:18
now we're going to do the same thing
00:23:20
that we did down here but we're going to
00:23:21
do to this ridge back here
00:23:24
and i'm
00:23:26
stroking
00:23:27
down and as i bring the brush down i hit
00:23:30
the canvas and then i pull it away right
00:23:32
before i hit this ridge
00:23:54
you have to vary the pressure
00:23:56
push harder
00:23:57
when you're down low
00:23:59
but start off
00:24:01
up high very very light and then it's
00:24:03
harder down low here and you can see
00:24:05
that creates that gradient
00:24:07
that nice blend from
00:24:09
this color to this color
00:24:24
beautiful so that just gets that part
00:24:26
started okay so let's do it with this
00:24:28
ridge here
00:24:31
now we needed some
00:24:34
primary cyan in that
00:24:37
so we've got a little bit here we can
00:24:39
pick up all right
00:24:42
and
00:24:46
give it a test that's going to be too
00:24:48
light
00:24:50
i'm going to dip my finger in water
00:24:52
tap it on the palette we're going to
00:24:54
pick up some of that water grab some
00:24:56
prussian blue
00:25:00
making it a pretty good shade darker
00:25:05
still too
00:25:07
still too light
00:25:08
go even darker
00:25:11
and let's try to
00:25:13
get some of that off of there just
00:25:14
rubbing it off
00:25:21
there now we're in the zone
00:25:40
got some lines so i'm gonna brush my
00:25:42
finger kind of sideways see if we can't
00:25:44
get rid of some of that
00:25:45
worked a little
00:25:46
but again we'll have to
00:25:51
beating the brush there on the
00:25:53
palette
00:25:56
trying to get a more
00:26:00
even spread of paint on the brush that
00:26:02
helped
00:26:03
help a little
00:26:06
okay so i'm over here
00:26:20
not bad we'll cover up some of this
00:26:35
okay that that's pretty good now let's
00:26:38
do it again with this ridge back here
00:26:39
watch the brick
00:26:44
and squeeze out some of the water
00:26:52
okay
00:26:56
pretty good
00:26:58
just a little moisture
00:27:00
pick up some white
00:27:03
dab it in that
00:27:04
prussian blue
00:27:07
still pretty light
00:27:09
test it out we're right about there
00:27:12
perfect
00:27:22
grab some more white
00:27:26
tap that away
00:27:32
get kind of a bright spot going right
00:27:34
there
00:27:41
okay
00:27:56
i'll make some more blue i don't want to
00:27:57
lighten this one right here
00:28:04
it's kind of the same color
00:28:06
keep it going it is a bit brighter
00:28:10
and i'll pick up a little white
00:28:14
try to brighten that down low
00:28:17
that looks pretty good
00:28:21
perfect
00:28:23
okay so that is looking really good i
00:28:25
like it
00:28:27
i'm gonna keep it going
00:28:29
and this time
00:28:30
i think what i'm gonna do
00:28:32
is we're gonna work on this real quick
00:28:34
before we let everything dry
00:28:39
i'm gonna stick to the same brush and
00:28:41
wash it off
00:28:49
and we're gonna grab some white
00:28:54
some red
00:28:56
some orange
00:29:02
more red
00:29:04
more white
00:29:06
let's try that for now
00:29:09
i'm also going to grab a napkin here and
00:29:11
i'm going to wet my fingers down
00:29:23
i'm just going to start testing this see
00:29:25
what this is like it's a pretty good
00:29:27
in-between color
00:29:32
i want that to pull further outward
00:29:34
though so we're gonna start going over
00:29:36
the top
00:29:37
as we get into this dark area
00:29:41
i'm going to use my fingers gently
00:29:44
just kind of try to smooth out some of
00:29:46
that canvas texture if you're using a
00:29:48
really smooth textured canvas you don't
00:29:50
need to worry about it as much
00:30:07
got something on the canvas there oh
00:30:09
well
00:30:17
and we might want some over there
00:30:21
this has got
00:30:23
some more pink we're gonna grab some
00:30:25
white
00:30:27
a little orange
00:30:36
i like that pink
00:30:37
we'll stick with it
00:30:51
you know that canvas texture because
00:30:52
this is not quite dry yet i'm trying to
00:30:54
blend with my fingers but i can tell
00:30:56
that it's kind of tacky underneath and
00:30:58
even though it's drying we can't work it
00:31:00
it makes it hard to blend over the top
00:31:02
so really you just use the brush not
00:31:04
feeling the fingers
00:31:35
okay
00:31:36
i'm gonna grab some more white over here
00:31:38
get it on my pallet
00:31:41
i'm gonna finish up by taking some white
00:31:45
with some orange
00:31:52
more orange
00:31:54
with some pink
00:32:04
i want to match that
00:32:06
that transition color between the pinks
00:32:08
and the yellows
00:32:19
let's try mixing
00:32:22
some different variations seeing what
00:32:24
works
00:32:42
not bad
00:32:44
i think we'll stick with it for now
00:32:53
a couple highlights down here
00:32:56
okay
00:32:57
now we're gonna grab white
00:33:00
with just some orange
00:33:34
i want to limit how much of this white
00:33:37
is on here
00:33:38
so i'm trying to pull it closer and
00:33:40
closer downward
00:33:52
grab some pink
00:33:54
some orange
00:34:01
that's more vibrant so get some more
00:34:03
vibrant tones in here in a couple spots
00:34:32
just keep going back and forth
00:34:35
trying to match those colors
00:34:37
trying to just blend it out where i can
00:34:40
and i think at this point
00:34:43
we are ready to
00:34:45
let things dry
00:35:06
okay
00:35:08
real quick last thing i want to do
00:35:10
try to pick up some of this white
00:35:18
just apply it
00:35:19
to this white
00:35:21
because we didn't really cover that with
00:35:22
anything we just want to cover it with
00:35:24
some paint
00:35:25
some white paint
00:35:26
some highlights
00:35:27
okay
00:35:28
now i'm gonna let it dry
00:35:30
and we'll come back
00:35:33
take it to the next step

00:43:50
okay so
00:43:51
you've seen me we rework this entire
00:43:53
area back here
00:43:55
and i know i probably did more than i
00:43:58
thought i was going to do probably more
00:43:59
than what you thought i was going to do
00:44:01
but i used the same exact process that i
00:44:04
used before i sped it up and i matched
00:44:07
these colors in the sky
00:44:08
just applying that color reapplying the
00:44:11
color and then just smoothing it out
00:44:13
with my fingers just trying to get a
00:44:14
nice even blend from these oranges to
00:44:17
the blues
00:44:18
and uh
00:44:19
i did the same with some of these ridges
00:44:21
just lightening some of these colors
00:44:23
saturating some of these colors
00:44:26
shading some more areas especially i
00:44:28
shaded the edges
00:44:29
which brings the focus kind of to the
00:44:32
center which is what we want
00:44:34
and so if you did have questions about
00:44:36
what i sped up please leave them in the
00:44:38
comments i'm always happy to join the
00:44:40
discussion help answer those and you
00:44:42
know this is just kind of
00:44:44
sometimes things go
00:44:46
not quite as well as i'd hope and i end
00:44:48
up having to rework a lot of it that's
00:44:50
just kind of the nature of the beast but
00:44:52
it really just depends
00:44:56
on what you're happy with and you don't
00:44:58
have to take it that far but i kind of
00:45:00
wanted a different effect so i did
00:45:02
rework it
00:45:04
and so what i'm doing now you're seeing
00:45:06
me add
00:45:09
a big tree here
00:45:10
and i want a couple foreground trees and
00:45:13
all i'm doing is taking some black
00:45:15
mixing that with white i'm sorry mixing
00:45:17
that with water
00:45:19
just thinning it down this is just
00:45:21
straight black
00:45:23
and we'll have another one right here
00:45:27
imagine that is a tree trunk
00:45:30
and we're just going to create black
00:45:32
silhouettes
00:45:36
super simple
00:45:38
just getting texture on there just
00:45:40
getting the silhouette imagine the
00:45:42
branches
00:45:43
they can go any way you want to go
00:45:49
but you do have to
00:45:50
be a little bit
00:45:52
intricate with this you've got to take
00:45:54
your time
00:45:55
a lot of small texture on there we want
00:45:57
it to appear
00:45:58
very close and so the more
00:46:02
pine bough texture we have the more
00:46:04
branched texture we have
00:46:07
it's going to look a little better
00:46:12
so i'm going to add some black trees
00:46:14
just taking this black
00:46:17
and just
00:46:18
getting it on there
00:46:26
and i'm going to continue to do this but
00:46:28
the painting itself
00:46:30
is wrapped up at this point i'm happy
00:46:32
with it i just want
00:46:35
these black trees to be in the
00:46:37
foreground
00:46:39
and it's going to take
00:46:40
a little while because again
00:46:43
i want to be very particular with these
00:46:45
branches but there's nothing tricky to
00:46:46
it
00:46:47
it's just using this round brush just
00:46:50
getting that black paint on there
00:46:56
so i'm going to continue doing this
00:46:58
adding a couple more trees and then
00:47:00
we'll be finished
00:47:03
well i hope you enjoyed this painting
