00:00:01
in the first part of our lighting a
00:00:03
small space video
00:00:05
we'll take a look at a simple approach
00:00:06
to replicate the sun
00:00:08
shining through some blinds and onto our
00:00:10
subject
00:00:12
so taking a look at our room we barely
00:00:14
have enough space here for lights
00:00:16
really our only option is to place
00:00:18
lights in this small gangway between the
00:00:20
bed and the wall
00:00:21
with the potential to boom lights over
00:00:23
the bed if necessary
00:00:26
the main area we're going to be able to
00:00:27
place our subject is the bed and our
00:00:30
window is just behind it
00:00:32
so we can use this window as a
00:00:33
motivating source
00:00:36
but using big soft light it's going to
00:00:38
be a little hard to control in this
00:00:40
space
00:00:42
so let's go for something a little
00:00:43
harder and more direct
00:00:45
and try to replicate the sun shooting
00:00:47
through the window [Music]
00:00:50
our room is on the second floor and we
00:00:53
don't have the tools to place a light
00:00:54
outside of the window
00:00:56
but that's okay if you use something as
00:00:59
simple as a mirror
00:01:00
we can place our light inside the room
00:01:02
and bounce it back to where we need it
00:01:03
to be
00:01:07
first of all we'll black out the window
00:01:09
so that we don't have any stray light
00:01:10
coming in
00:01:12
we just use two layers of black material
00:01:14
here to adequately block out the light
00:01:18
next we can place our mirror
00:01:20
[Music]
00:01:23
and turn on our light
00:01:28
we use the godox fe-150 here
00:01:32
now the mirror is a reflect in our light
00:01:34
but it's difficult to tell
00:01:36
as we have lights spilling all around
00:01:37
the room
00:01:39
a good solution to this would be to add
00:01:41
a fresnel or spot attachment to our
00:01:43
light to control and cut down on our spill
00:01:47
however with a low budget you might not
00:01:49
have these tools
00:01:51
so we're going to wrap some cine foil
00:01:52
around our lighting unit to control the
00:01:54
spill
00:01:57
our example was quickly put together
00:01:58
here and a little messy
00:02:00
but you should always be careful of
00:02:02
blocking fans and vents on your lights
00:02:03
so that they don't overheat
00:02:06
make sure you don't have any of your
00:02:07
cine foil touching the bulb
00:02:09
[Music]
00:02:12
you can see now that our light spread is
00:02:13
far more controlled
00:02:15
and our mirror is reflecting the light
00:02:16
into a nice little pocket on the bed
00:02:19
this already looks like a nice patch of
00:02:21
sunlight coming through the window
00:02:24
to cut down on the harshness of this
00:02:26
light and to add interest and mood to
00:02:28
our image
00:02:29
we can simply pull down our blinds to
00:02:31
add some shape
00:02:36
[Music]
00:02:43
this could also be done with something
00:02:45
like a kookaloris boomed in front of the
00:02:47
mirror
00:02:48
if you need some more control over the
00:02:49
pattern
00:02:52
now our blinds are quite thin and
00:02:54
lightly coloured
00:02:55
because of this as well as our light
00:02:57
coming through the gaps
00:02:58
our light is also bouncing off the
00:03:00
blinds on one side
00:03:02
and passing through the blinds on the
00:03:03
mirror side creating
00:03:05
extra fill light in our shadows
00:03:07
[Music]
00:03:08
this is actually useful as it means we
00:03:11
don't need another light for phil
00:03:13
and it gives us the flexibility to push
00:03:15
and pull our shadows in post
00:03:17
to convey a darker or lighter scene
00:03:19
whilst retaining a good amount of
00:03:21
dynamic range
00:03:24
now because of the angle of our sunlight
00:03:26
it wasn't 100
00:03:27
certain that we would always have a
00:03:29
catch light in the eye depending on how
00:03:31
the subject
00:03:32
moved his eyes so he also added in an
00:03:34
extra light
00:03:36
boomed above the subject to make sure we
00:03:38
always had a little highlight
00:03:40
we used the godox lc 500r led tube
00:03:44
matching the color temperature of our
00:03:46
fv-150
00:03:47
boomed above and bouncing from a tiny
00:03:50
point on this paper lantern
00:03:52
that we already had hanging from the
00:03:53
ceiling
00:03:55
we turned the output of this light right
00:03:57
down so it wasn't affecting our overall
00:03:59
exposure
00:04:00
but still gave us just enough to reflect
00:04:02
in our subjects eyes
00:04:05
so by utilizing something simple like a
00:04:08
mirror you're able to have light in places you
00:04:10
might not otherwise be able to fit
00:04:12
lighting units
00:04:14
this opens up more possibilities for
00:04:15
shooting in a small space like this
00:04:17
and you could buy things like
00:04:18
mirrorboard and be even more flexible
00:04:21
with where you can reflect your light
00:04:24
hopefully this has helped in giving you
00:04:26
something to think about in terms of
00:04:28
lighting a space like this
00:04:30
experimenting with things like mirrors
00:04:31
is a great way to improve on your
00:04:33
lighting skills
00:04:34
and help you to think about how you can
00:04:36
light a scene with the tools and
00:04:37
restrictions that you may have
00:04:45
if you're interested in how i color
00:04:46
grade my work i've just added a 21
00:04:49
minute tutorial video to my website for
00:04:51
just eight pounds
00:04:53
the tutorial takes you through the
00:04:54
grading process and davinci resolve
00:04:56
for two cinematic looks a more modern
00:04:59
punchy look and a more classical filmic
00:05:02
look
00:05:03
i've also included some practice dng
00:05:05
files so you can grade along with the

I'm hoping this little series will help people to think about the ways in which this can be achieved and be able to build on these ideas. Mirrors and mirror board are great tools for bouncing hard light where you can't fit a whole lighting unit - there's a variety of applications for using mirrors in your lighting and in this video we can see how it helps to add a light "shooting through" the window, where we would otherwise have no tools to put a light outside of it. Now as with anything, this isn't perfect - depending on the size of the mirror, distance of light from that mirror and distance of mirror from blinds - it's tricky to light up a bigger area. But for close ups and detailed shots as shown in the video, this sort of thing can save you in a pinch if you have absolutely no way to put a light out of that window!
