00:00:00
hi John here in this video we're going
00:00:03
to be looking at the fire tube boiler
00:00:05
also known as a smoke tube boiler and
00:00:08
normally in our videos what I do I run
00:00:11
through things like the components the
00:00:13
parts highly work and things like that
00:00:15
but in this video I thought we'll take a
00:00:18
different approach why don't we build a
00:00:20
fire tube boiler together and that way
00:00:22
we can understand why it's built the way
00:00:25
it is and how it works in order to do
00:00:28
this we need to be a little bit creative
00:00:30
and that's why we invented the
00:00:33
configurator tool now I absolutely love
00:00:37
this tool and I'm going to show you what
00:00:38
it does right now so here's a firetube boiler
00:00:42
I'm accessing the firetube boiler
00:00:44
directly through a web browser and if
00:00:47
you check the video description area
00:00:50
you'll be able to access this freely
00:00:53
model through your web browser as well
00:00:55
you just click on the link provided so
00:00:58
what is the configurator and why is it
00:01:00
so good well let me show you here's our
00:01:04
configurator as you can see there are
00:01:07
some names here on the right-hand side
00:01:08
and there's an eyeball and if we cross
00:01:11
out the eyeball we'll be able to hide
00:01:13
and show different parts of the boiler
00:01:16
let me show you how that works let's
00:01:19
take a cross-section first so we can see
00:01:22
here we can see inside the boiler and
00:01:25
we've also got some arrows and the
00:01:28
arrows are going to allow us to see the
00:01:30
direction that the exhaust gas is
00:01:32
passing through the boiler if we go back
00:01:35
to our full view we can remove parts
00:01:39
like the cover for example and if we go
00:01:42
down we can remove the shell and then we
00:01:45
can have a look at some of the parts
00:01:47
inside the boiler maybe we'll go down a
00:01:49
little bit further we can move some of
00:01:51
these tubes they're kind of in the way
00:01:54
maybe we'll get rid of some more tubes
00:01:55
and we can actually see what's going on
00:01:58
inside the boiler so the configurator is
00:02:01
a pretty cool tool in fact it's probably
00:02:05
one of the best things about severy and
00:02:07
the thing I like the most so check out
00:02:09
the link in the video description area
00:02:10
and you can do everything on doing
00:02:13
direct for you
00:02:14
web browser and it's really going to
00:02:15
help you to learn but as I said before
00:02:18
what we're going to do is build a boiler
00:02:21
so let's just reset the configurator for
00:02:24
a moment and we've got our fire tube
00:02:27
boiler here like I say it's also known
00:02:29
as a smoke tube boiler we are going to
00:02:31
do a video for a water to boil it but
00:02:33
that's going to come a little bit later
00:02:35
so let's go up to the top in fact if we
00:02:39
go back down we can reverse everything
00:02:41
and we can see that we've actually just
00:02:43
got an empty space so in my factory I've
00:02:47
got this empty space and I want to build
00:02:49
a boiler there so the first thing I need
00:02:51
to do is to add some supports so I'll
00:02:54
mark out the area where I want to build
00:02:56
the boiler so there it is this red frame
00:03:00
next thing I should do probably is to
00:03:03
add a shell but actually put the cover
00:03:05
around the shell with cover is sort of
00:03:08
like insulation and the cover would go
00:03:11
around the shell so let's just do that
00:03:14
for a moment I'll take it off in a
00:03:15
second so we've got the cover around
00:03:17
it's normally a bit thicker than what
00:03:19
we're seeing here and the idea with
00:03:22
cover is that we insulate all of the
00:03:25
shell in order to trap the heat inside
00:03:28
the boiler or as much of it as possible
00:03:30
we don't lose the heat because we're
00:03:31
paying money for combustion of the fuel
00:03:34
and things like that
00:03:35
which we're going to learn about in a
00:03:36
moment so we'll insulate the shell and
00:03:39
consequently the boiler so we've got a
00:03:42
shell we're going to fill this up with
00:03:44
water you can see idea where the boiler
00:03:47
is that we can burn some fuel and we can
00:03:51
heat up some water and we can turn that
00:03:53
water to steam so let's imagine for a
00:03:56
moment we try and fill up the shell well
00:03:58
that's not gonna work out too well for
00:04:00
us at this present moment because the
00:04:03
water is just going to run out of the
00:04:04
shell so let's start thinking about what
00:04:07
else we can add here we're gonna need a
00:04:09
burner we're gonna need something to
00:04:10
create combustion we're gonna be burning
00:04:13
things like light fuel oil and gas so
00:04:15
let's add a burner okay so the burn is
00:04:18
there I've got a bit of a problem now
00:04:20
because if we were feeding fuel into the
00:04:22
burner and we're also feeding in air
00:04:25
in order that we can have combustion
00:04:27
remember you need he fuel an air or heat
00:04:30
fuel and oxygen in order to get
00:04:32
combustion that is a fire triangle so
00:04:35
feed all of that in then we've actually
00:04:38
just got it going into our shell and
00:04:40
that's full of water well not really
00:04:42
because it's leaking quite a lot but
00:04:43
this isn't really gonna work out very
00:04:45
well for us so let's add some more parts
00:04:48
here for a moment we'll add a corrugated
00:04:51
furnace and we've still got a bit of a
00:04:53
gap here so let's see what else we can
00:04:56
add here maybe we go down that's
00:04:58
something called a smoke box we've kind
00:05:00
of filled the gap up a little bit now
00:05:02
we've added two ends onto our cylinder
00:05:05
they go got another end here this is
00:05:10
actually the smoke box on the end here
00:05:12
we'll discuss that in a moment if we go
00:05:15
down here okay so we seal off the
00:05:17
furnace so we've got our fuel going to
00:05:19
the burner we've got air being drawn
00:05:21
into the burner and will ignite the fuel
00:05:24
and we can then have combustion in the
00:05:28
furnace which is gonna be this area here
00:05:31
this is actually a corrugated furnace
00:05:32
let's take away the shelf for a moment
00:05:36
so you can see it's got quite a unique
00:05:39
shape long and cylindrical and this is
00:05:42
known as the corrugated furnace as they
00:05:46
should just go inside for a moment we
00:05:47
can have a look so we are inside I've
00:05:50
got a burner down the end we're gonna
00:05:52
have combustion in this space here so
00:05:55
we're gonna have a flame it's gonna be
00:05:57
burning around here and the exhaust gas
00:06:00
is then gonna be pushed further away
00:06:03
from the burner so we're travelling away
00:06:05
now if I go out I've actually just came
00:06:09
out of the boiler but we'll get to the
00:06:12
end of the corrugated furnace and then
00:06:16
we've got the same problem as before
00:06:18
we're just sort of ending somewhere in
00:06:20
our shell and we're surrounded by water
00:06:22
again okay so that's not very good let's
00:06:25
add a reversal chamber or reversing
00:06:29
chamber and you can see we've sealed off
00:06:31
that area now the exhaust gases are
00:06:34
going into reversal chamber and then
00:06:37
what's happening well if we zoom out
00:06:39
can I run the other side it's actually
00:06:41
sealed on this side as well there are no
00:06:44
holes or anything the only place where
00:06:46
there are holes are on this side here so
00:06:49
we've got the holes and they're coming
00:06:51
out of the reversal chamber but now what
00:06:54
well that's still not very good we're
00:06:57
still just gonna end up with a lot of
00:06:59
water splashing around because remember
00:07:01
our shell which seals the whole thing in
00:07:04
should be full of water let's get rid of
00:07:06
that shell again so now what we need to
00:07:10
do we need to get the exhaust gas from
00:07:13
here from the reversing chamber the
00:07:16
reversal chamber and we need to get it
00:07:18
out through the smoke box actually see a
00:07:22
connection here that's going to connect
00:07:24
to a chimney and in order to get that
00:07:29
exhaust gas to the smoke box on the end
00:07:31
we're gonna have to send it from the
00:07:34
reversing chamber all the way over to
00:07:36
the opposite side so let's do that I'm
00:07:40
gonna need to add some tubes here this
00:07:42
is why we call it smoke tube boiler or
00:07:44
firetube boiler because we're literally
00:07:46
sending the smoke through tubes in the
00:07:49
boiler the water tube boiler as the name
00:07:53
implies has tubes that are full of water
00:07:54
and the smoke tube boiler has tubes that
00:07:56
are full of smoke or exhaust gas so
00:07:59
let's add our tubes okay so the exhaust
00:08:03
gas is coming out of the reverse and
00:08:05
chamber coming along here from right to
00:08:08
left and then once again we're going to
00:08:12
hit loads of water right so let's solve
00:08:16
this issue we need a front tube sheet so
00:08:20
there's our front tube sheet and now
00:08:22
we've got the exhaust gas coming out of
00:08:24
these holes here and also in this
00:08:27
section here and we need to turn that
00:08:30
exhaust gas around and send it back
00:08:32
through these holes here on the outside
00:08:35
now normally if we add some inspection
00:08:40
doors we can seal off this section here
00:08:46
and we can seal off the smoke box which
00:08:49
is this section here we can't really see
00:08:52
much when we add the inspection doors or
00:08:54
inspection hatches so let's just remove
00:08:56
those again so the exhaust gas is coming
00:08:59
out of these tubes here and then we're
00:09:03
going to try and turn the exhaust gas
00:09:04
and send it back through the tubes here
00:09:08
unfortunately at the moment we don't
00:09:10
have any tubes so let's add those tubes
00:09:13
in right now
00:09:15
third smoke tubes okay so we've got the
00:09:18
exhaust gas on the Left it's traveling
00:09:20
now to the right way to the smoke box
00:09:24
here and then we've got another problem
00:09:29
these tubes are not really sealing with
00:09:31
the smoke box very well at the moment so
00:09:34
let's go down here and what I was
00:09:38
actually looking for was a back to be
00:09:40
sheet normally I refer to this as a rear
00:09:42
tube sheet but here it's a back tube
00:09:44
feet and as you can see we've sealed off
00:09:47
those tubes now and the exhaust gas is
00:09:51
going to flow out of these tubes the
00:09:53
third pass of tubes it's going to come
00:09:56
into the smoke box and then if we angle
00:09:59
this correctly it should be able to see
00:10:02
where the exhaust gas exits and it's
00:10:05
going to go through the exit at the top
00:10:07
here spin around and go to the chimney
00:10:11
and to a stack so we've got rid of the
00:10:15
exhaust gas and as you may have noticed
00:10:18
it passed three times through the water
00:10:22
that would be within the boiler so this
00:10:25
c3 pass boiler let's look at the first
00:10:29
pass we go from the burner along the
00:10:34
furnace to the reversal chamber and that
00:10:36
is one pass well then add a second smoke
00:10:41
tubes the exhaust gas comes along here
00:10:44
and that is a second pass well then add
00:10:48
a third smoke tubes and we have a third
00:10:52
pass which goes left to right and then
00:10:55
the exhaust gas has transferred a lot of
00:10:58
that heat to the
00:11:00
water which is going to turn some of the
00:11:02
water to steam and the steam is going to
00:11:05
collect at the top of the shell the
00:11:09
entire shell is not full of water the
00:11:11
water level would actually be somewhere
00:11:13
around here we want to submerge all of
00:11:17
the tubes in water and we want to make
00:11:20
sure they're totally immersed in water
00:11:22
and that at no point does the water
00:11:25
level reduce to a point where the tubes
00:11:27
are not covered in water if the boy is
00:11:30
in service and this hot gas flowing
00:11:32
through these tubes the tubes have to be
00:11:35
submerged or immersed in water otherwise
00:11:39
you've risk
00:11:40
fracturing tubes or breaking the tubes
00:11:42
and you may have a boiler failure let's
00:11:46
add the shell again because I just want
00:11:48
to show you how the boiler looks and it
00:11:49
has a bit more of a simple construction
00:11:51
so we can add the shell let's just take
00:11:55
off a few bits and bobs for a moment we
00:11:57
know about the burner we know we need a
00:11:59
source of combustion let's take off the
00:12:02
ends and you can see we've actually got
00:12:06
quite a simple design now it's just a
00:12:08
long cylinder more or less so we've got
00:12:13
a cylinder we fill up the cylinder with
00:12:15
water we've sealed the exhaust gas
00:12:17
system so it's not going to mix with the
00:12:19
water and once we fire up the boiler we
00:12:24
allow the exhaust gas to pass through
00:12:26
the furnace and the tubes etc then we'll
00:12:29
transfer the heat to the water and we
00:12:32
will turn it to steam but as you can see
00:12:37
the boiler design is relatively simple
00:12:40
when we break it down into its major
00:12:42
components but let's just reset
00:12:45
everything for a moment we'll take a
00:12:47
cross-section so we can see some of the
00:12:49
arrows we can actually just go inside
00:12:51
that boiler a little bit here we can see
00:12:54
that the furnace the corrugated furnace
00:12:57
is here the red arrows are going left to
00:12:59
right the red arrows will then reach the
00:13:01
reversal chamber which if we angle this
00:13:04
correctly we can probably see there's
00:13:08
the reversal chamber here we'll spin the
00:13:11
exhaust gas around send it back the
00:13:12
other way
00:13:13
and then when it gets to the other
00:13:17
reversal chamber at the opposite end
00:13:19
we'll spin it around once again we've
00:13:22
come around this way we can actually see
00:13:24
that occurring you can see the exhaust
00:13:27
gas comes out of these in a second pass
00:13:30
tubes so those ones here will spin it
00:13:33
around send it into the third pass tubes
00:13:36
on the outer periphery of the boiler or
00:13:40
closer to the shell and then as we can
00:13:44
see it comes left to right so left to
00:13:47
right for the corrugated furnace right
00:13:49
to left from the reversal chamber to the
00:13:51
other reversal chamber and then left to
00:13:54
right again all the way to the smoke box
00:13:57
and if we go along here we should be
00:14:00
able to see that and see the tubes
00:14:03
connecting here they're going through
00:14:06
the rear tube sheet into the smoke box
00:14:11
and then the exhaust gas will exit to
00:14:14
the chimney so that's essentially our
00:14:17
firetube boiler works
00:14:24
I hope you enjoyed this video I hope you
00:14:28
enjoyed having a look at our new
00:14:30
firetube boiler I hope you enjoyed the
00:14:33
configurator tool I think that's one of
00:14:35
the best things we've got unsavoury at
00:14:37
the moment and I really do encourage you
00:14:38
to go and check out the link in the

00:14:46
now on your smartphone on your PC on
00:14:49
your laptop on your Apple Mac whatever
00:14:51
and if you're using this tool and you're
00:14:53
watching this video then you really
00:14:55
should be able to understand exactly how
00:14:57
a fire to boiler works and that's what

give you the tools that you can use to
00:15:04
learn about engineering effectively and
00:15:06
I really do believe this is one of the
00:15:08
best tools out there so check out the
00:15:10
link if you've got any comments about
00:15:13
this video maybe you've got some
00:15:15
suggestions of what we can do next
00:15:17
maybe you visualize in your mind that we
00:15:19
can use a configurator for things like
00:15:20
electric motors heat exchangers turbines
00:15:24
whatever add your comment to this video
00:15:27
and I can guarantee you that we will

They are one of the two common boiler designs commonly employed today, the other design being the water tube boiler. The boiler shown in this video is a three pass boiler, as the gasses pass three times through the boiler shell. How Fire Tube Boilers Work Fuel is fed by a burner into a corrugated furnace along with air. The air and fuel mix and a source of ignition is applied in order to start combustion. The heat from the flame and exhaust gases is passed to the corrugated furnace, then to the water due to thermal conduction. The exhaust gases then pass through a reversal chamber, the second pass of tubes, the third pass of tubes, then finally through a smoke box and out of the chimney. The furnace and tubes allow the heat generated by combustion to be transferred to the water in the shell. As the water in the shell is heated, it begins to turn to steam. Fire tube boilers rely upon on relatively few parts, these parts include: * Shell – fired pressure vessel. * Burner – used for combustion. * Corrugated Furnace – where combustion occurs. * Tubes – used to direct exhaust gasses through the shell. * Tube Sheets – used to hold the tubes in position. * Reversal Chamber – gasses are reversed in this space and sent back in the opposite direction. * Cover – retains insulation which increases the thermal efficiency of the boiler. * Smoke Box – located where exhaust gasses exit the final tube pass, but before the chimney.
