00:00:01
with wolters world and today we're here
00:00:02
in turku finland and today i want to
00:00:04
talk about is how to prepare your money
00:00:06
when you travel abroad because no matter
00:00:08
where you go in the world you're going
00:00:09
to have to pay but you might want to
00:00:11
have a better idea of how do you pay and
00:00:13
what do you pay with in different
00:00:15
countries because it can be different
00:00:16
because some places it's all about
00:00:18
credit cards and other places cash is
00:00:20
king and so i think the first thing you
00:00:22
need to do when you're going to go to a
00:00:24
destination before you go
00:00:26
search online to see what the currency
00:00:28
looks like because if you're coming to
00:00:30
finland oh they use the euro here it's
00:00:32
not the mark anymore the market it's the
00:00:34
euro and so have an idea what a five
00:00:37
euro bill looks like a 20 a 10 and yes
00:00:39
sometimes when you're looking at money
00:00:40
from around the world you feel like it's
00:00:42
monopoly money how it feels or how it
00:00:45
looks but it can be confusing at first
00:00:47
but once you understand what it looks
00:00:49
like it's a lot less likely that you're
00:00:51
going to get tricked into taking the
00:00:53
money that isn't from there because i've
00:00:55
seen people that have gotten back change
00:00:57
in the u.s from other countries or
00:00:58
around europe where they know there's
00:01:00
travelers coming through that aren't
00:01:01
sure i mean the czech republic is
00:01:03
infamous for giving you change in like
00:01:05
florence from hungary instead of check
00:01:07
money and you're like i didn't know the
00:01:08
difference that's why it's good to look
00:01:10
ahead and see what does that currency
00:01:12
look like so if i search finland
00:01:15
currency well the euro pops up if i
00:01:17
search czech republic oh the check crown
00:01:20
comes up oh they don't use the euro and
00:01:22
the czech republic good to know okay
00:01:23
like you're going to sweden are they use
00:01:26
the euro there
00:01:28
no they're not oh and so you have that
00:01:31
okay and look at the bills and the coins
00:01:33
because another thing that's important
00:01:34
when you travel is realizing that bills
00:01:36
are always big but in some places coins
00:01:38
are actually worth something like a
00:01:40
handful or a pocketful here
00:01:42
i'll show you
00:01:43
this little plastic bag of coins of
00:01:46
eurocoins this is over 30 us dollars
00:01:48
just in this if i was in the u.s that'd
00:01:49
be about you know it would look about i
00:01:51
don't know two dollars with the coins
00:01:53
but here it's worth a lot that's why you
00:01:54
need to prepare before you come now when
00:01:57
you're going to get money when you go
00:01:58
abroad one thing you're going to use is
00:02:00
your atm card okay now for your best
00:02:02
exchange rates what you need to do is
00:02:04
use your bank
00:02:06
card from back home okay use your local
00:02:08
bank debit card abroad because
00:02:11
usually they're going to give the best
00:02:12
rates and if there's any issues you can
00:02:14
go and complain to your home bank easier
00:02:16
than to complain to somebody else now
00:02:19
when you go to atms if you're here in
00:02:20
europe i mean atms are all over the
00:02:22
place you're going to need to have your
00:02:24
four-digit pin number someplace to take
00:02:25
six you know but have a pin number for
00:02:27
that to get your money out and i will
00:02:29
tell you there are different atms all
00:02:32
over and there is a difference from
00:02:34
going to a atm at a bank versus kind of
00:02:37
a private standalone atm just like in
00:02:39
the us and so you might get
00:02:41
extra fees there might be you know they
00:02:43
might charge you three euros to use your
00:02:44
card or they might charge a percentage
00:02:46
of what you take out it's really
00:02:48
important that you pay attention when
00:02:50
you're starting to get money out from an
00:02:51
atm also what i've seen a lot of times
00:02:53
is atms abroad will give you the option
00:02:55
for a
00:02:56
conversion where they will nicely oh you
00:02:59
want to take out 300 euros
00:03:01
we can just charge your bank 368 dollars
00:03:04
and it'll be fine so you know it comes
00:03:05
out you never
00:03:07
ever take the conversion because they're
00:03:09
not going to get the best exchange rate
00:03:10
for you your bank back home will i was
00:03:13
in amsterdam the other day and took out
00:03:14
money and they offered me 300 euros oh
00:03:17
368 dollars i said no conversion my bank
00:03:20
back home the 300 euros was 330
00:03:24
so it was 10
00:03:25
i was going to lose by taking that
00:03:27
conversion so you never want to take
00:03:28
that conversion when you take money out
00:03:30
now you may think well mark what about
00:03:32
the atms in finland i don't speak
00:03:34
finnish dude nobody speaks finnish i
00:03:36
mean i barely know like
00:03:38
uh hoofapa which is like good day and
00:03:40
muay which is high i mean they know that
00:03:42
and so most atms i've come across
00:03:44
through europe will have the language of
00:03:46
the country they're in and english okay
00:03:48
and then maybe spanish or german or
00:03:50
french might be on there too but english
00:03:52
is always going to be probably your
00:03:53
default languages that you can choose
00:03:55
from right at the beginning and
00:03:56
sometimes when you use an international
00:03:58
card the atm will automatically switch
00:04:00
to english anyway so you have that now
00:04:03
remember your bank back home might not
00:04:06
know you're traveling so they might
00:04:07
block your card and you don't want your
00:04:09
card stolen at an atm and bamberg
00:04:12
like happened to me
00:04:13
because sometimes it works sometimes it
00:04:14
doesn't so make sure you call your bank
00:04:17
back home to let them know that you're
00:04:18
going to be taking money out and tell
00:04:19
them what countries you're going to go
00:04:21
to so it allows that same thing with
00:04:23
your credit cards tell your credit card
00:04:25
company you're going to be traveling and
00:04:26
where some of them you just go online
00:04:28
you can click the i'm traveling but and
00:04:30
you're fine but it's just better safe
00:04:31
than sorry now speaking of credit cards
00:04:34
i mean they're ubiquitous everywhere you
00:04:36
go these days and the thing is in places
00:04:38
like i was in sweden before and
00:04:40
literally they were places they're like
00:04:41
we don't take cash we only take credit
00:04:43
cards so if you have a credit card the
00:04:45
two biggest ones are mastercard and visa
00:04:48
then way down here is like american
00:04:49
express then far below that is discover
00:04:51
when you're coming to europe so if you
00:04:53
don't have one of those two cards you're
00:04:54
gonna be in trouble like i love my
00:04:55
american express i love getting my delta
00:04:57
points with it but i can't use it
00:04:59
everywhere okay so make sure you have a
00:05:01
mastercard or a visa just in case
00:05:03
because some places like hotels might
00:05:04
not let you make a reservation without a
00:05:07
credit card also when you're looking at
00:05:09
what credit card to use when you travel
00:05:11
try to find a credit card that has no
00:05:13
international transaction fees because
00:05:15
sometimes you can lose another three
00:05:16
percent or get charged another three
00:05:18
percent just because you were using your
00:05:20
card in another country so do check the
00:05:22
fine print on your credit card now
00:05:24
sometimes people don't want to use
00:05:25
credit cards they just want to bring
00:05:26
cash and exchange cash the exchange
00:05:29
houses which used to be ubiquitous all
00:05:31
over europe are not as easy to find as
00:05:34
they used to be there'll be some at the
00:05:36
airport probably one at the train
00:05:37
station but you might have to go into a
00:05:39
bank to change money but it's not as
00:05:41
easy to find them as it used to be now
00:05:43
if you go to places like prague where
00:05:44
there's a lot of international travelers
00:05:46
and they don't use the euro there then
00:05:47
you're gonna find more and that gives
00:05:49
people a way to kind of screw people
00:05:51
over so what you want to look at is
00:05:53
don't just look at their exchange rate
00:05:54
they offer also look at what fee they
00:05:57
charge or what percentage they knock up
00:05:59
because you may see one that says zero
00:06:01
commission but then they give you a
00:06:02
really bad rate or a place that gives
00:06:04
you a really good rate but they charge a
00:06:05
little commission and yes you have to
00:06:07
use some of those high school math
00:06:08
skills to figure it out but it can be a
00:06:11
ten percent difference in what you're
00:06:13
getting okay also if you're going to be
00:06:15
taking out cash whether you're
00:06:16
exchanging money or taking money out of
00:06:18
the atm it's better to exchange more
00:06:20
than less because of those fees and
00:06:22
commissions it's sometimes just better
00:06:24
that way like i will always take out a
00:06:26
minimum of 200 or 300 euros when i'm
00:06:28
taking money out just to make sure okay
00:06:30
because
00:06:31
i don't want to lose the money and then
00:06:32
i have it with me now one thing i will
00:06:34
say going back to our cash thing the
00:06:37
more north you go into europe it seems
00:06:38
like the bigger bills they give you like
00:06:40
i remember going to germany and taking
00:06:42
out 300 euros they gave me three 100
00:06:44
euro bills
00:06:45
in germany you can spend those things
00:06:47
but in portugal people didn't have
00:06:48
change for that in portugal when i took
00:06:50
out money i got 10s and 20s okay so do
00:06:53
be aware of that now another thing
00:06:54
people sometimes want to do is get a
00:06:56
travel card or a prepaid credit card
00:06:58
like a prepaid visa or american express
00:07:00
or mastercard you can get those those be
00:07:02
fine just make sure they'll work abroad
00:07:04
because some are limited to where they
00:07:06
can be used and but i would say if
00:07:08
you're going to get those get a visa or
00:07:09
a mastercard gift card okay or a prepaid
00:07:12
credit card don't do anything else just
00:07:14
because you don't know where it's all
00:07:15
going to be accepted and make sure
00:07:17
there's a pin number to go with it just
00:07:18
in case but the thing is is some places
00:07:20
you don't have to have the pen sometimes
00:07:22
just swipe and go and sometimes you
00:07:23
still sign i know here when i was using
00:07:25
my american express and buying some
00:07:27
stuff at the store i still had to sign
00:07:29
they didn't want to pin so there are
00:07:31
things to think about there um and then
00:07:33
another thing i think
00:07:34
is another thing you could do is you
00:07:35
could actually bring some cash with you
00:07:37
now sometimes it's hard to get different
00:07:39
currencies when you travel from your
00:07:40
local bank but if you have enough time
00:07:42
like oh we're going to we're going to
00:07:44
find them we're coming here to turku in
00:07:46
a couple months talk to your bank and be
00:07:48
like hey um could you get me 200 euros
00:07:50
and they might not have it with them
00:07:51
then but they can get it to you in a
00:07:53
week or so and then you can have that
00:07:55
cash and if you're going to more exotic
00:07:56
locations like if you need money for a
00:07:58
bhutan
00:07:59
what are they used to bhutan i gotta
00:08:00
search that up and then can my bank get
00:08:02
me that it might take a little bit
00:08:03
longer time but at least you have
00:08:05
something and i know for us
00:08:07
whenever we're leaving europe we're
00:08:08
going back to the us i will always make
00:08:10
sure i have a couple hundred euros with
00:08:12
me because i know i'm going to come back
00:08:13
so when i come back i know we have some
00:08:15
money in our pockets but if you don't
00:08:17
have that opportunity talk to your bank
00:08:19
get a couple hundred euros beforehand
00:08:20
and you'll be okay now when you're
00:08:22
coming back and you think oh i want to
00:08:23
exchange my money when i come back
00:08:25
remember when you're exchanging money
00:08:27
you don't usually get to use the coins
00:08:28
okay just the bills they'll take so do
00:08:30
be aware of that and a lot of times the
00:08:33
exchange rates aren't really great when
00:08:34
you're going back home for the money
00:08:35
it's just kind of like give me whatever
00:08:36
dollars i can for these euros which is
00:08:39
fine but i've seen if you travel enough
00:08:41
you might as well just keep the money
00:08:42
and have for your next trip and then
00:08:44
exchanging it back into dollars because
00:08:46
you're just gonna lose you're gonna lose
00:08:47
money that way okay so those are just
00:08:50
some tips i had for you uh for thinking
00:08:52
about how to prepare your money for when
00:08:54
you're going to go abroad because you
00:08:56
know what one of the issues you don't
00:08:58
want to deal with is getting someplace
00:08:59
and not be able to pay because there's
00:09:01
so many so much good food some good
00:09:02
restaurants so many good museums to
00:09:04
check out when you're here and you want
00:09:05
to make sure you have cash or a credit
00:09:07
card or apple pay that's another thing
00:09:10
cashless payments i forgot to tell you
00:09:11
about that cash's payments are getting
00:09:13
more and more accepted everywhere if
00:09:14
you're coming here to europe you'll see
00:09:16
a lot of places just take the tap
00:09:17
especially vending machines just to the
00:09:20
tap part so if you don't have that
00:09:21
little like wi-fi looking thing on your
00:09:23
credit card try to get a new card that
00:09:25
has that for the contactless payments
00:09:27
that can help you out or if you have
00:09:29
apple pay on your phone or google pay on
00:09:30
your phone
00:09:31
you can use those a lot of places too
00:09:33
not everywhere but it's getting to the
00:09:35
point now that it's like not odd that
00:09:37
they have it it's more normal that they
00:09:38
have it all right so i hope this helps
00:09:40
you know a bit better about your money
