Изучая обстоятельства дел об убийствах проституток, Николай Троицкий догадывается, что все эти преступления – дело рук одного и того же человека. Но для районного отдела милиции главное – побыстрее закрыть дело, поэтому добросовестному оперу приходится вести собственное расследование. Троицкий и заинтересовавшаяся этим делом журналистка Жанна замечают странное сходство деталей нынешних убийств с лондонскими событиями 120-летней давности. Тогда, в 1888 году, в английской столице произошла серия жестоких расправ над проститутками. Убийца, называвший себя Джеком Потрошителем, был искренне убежден, что таким образом он способствует очищению мира от скверны. В ходе начатого расследования Троицкому становится понятно, что в наши дни в Санкт-Петербурге живет человек, вообразивший, будто в нем воплотился неистовый дух лондонского Потрошителя. Объединив усилия, оперативник и журналистка идут по следу маньяка. Увлеченные поиском истины, они не сразу замечают, как их дружеские отношения перерастают в настоящую любовь. Случайный знакомый – ученый и специалист по африканской культуре Маврин – помогает Жанне и Троицкому в расшифровке загадочной надписи на случайно обнаруженном орудии убийств. Может, именно в ней содержится ключ к разгадке?
