00:00:01
earned themselves quite the reputation
00:00:03
they're definitely not known for their
00:00:05
high quality their high speed
00:00:07
or even sometimes their safety record
00:00:09
well today I'll be showing you something
00:00:12
very different as I take a ride on board
00:00:14
Serbia's own high-speed train with its
00:00:17
modern standards of comfort and safety
00:00:18
I'll be taking this brand new Express
00:00:20
train on a journey between Serbia's two
00:00:22
biggest cities and reviewing the quality
00:00:24
of this exciting new step for rail
00:00:26
travel in the Balkans
00:00:28
hello and welcome back to another video
00:00:30
today I'm here in Serbia in the city of
00:00:33
novusad and I'm going to be taking the
00:00:34
brand new high-speed train down to the
00:00:36
capital city Belgrade I'm booked in
00:00:38
first class for this journey let's go
00:00:40
welcome to Novi sad's recently
00:00:42
overhauled station just a short walk
00:00:44
away from the city's Lively Center
00:00:47
there's quite a lot to see here so let's
00:00:49
head inside and take a look around
00:00:52
all main entrances to the station are
00:00:54
surrounded by a makeshift netting
00:00:55
construction which you don't often see I
00:00:58
assume this is to keep birds from flying
00:01:00
in
00:01:01
the first thing you'll see in the
00:01:03
building is this large main hall which I
00:01:05
think is just oozing with character
00:01:08
here you will find the ticket office
00:01:09
along with a selection of seating and
00:01:11
plants
00:01:13
some of the ticket office counters have
00:01:15
been converted to serve as a post office
00:01:17
and bank however there are now a few
00:01:19
ticket machines on offer too you also
00:01:21
have the option to book in advance using
00:01:23
the fairly decent suryavos website this
00:01:26
is only available in Serbian but should
00:01:28
be easy enough to use more information
00:01:30
about the price of tickets near the end
00:01:32
of the video
00:01:34
Novi South Station is one full of Art
00:01:37
and history
00:01:39
the biggest example of this has to be
00:01:41
the wall art in the main hall
00:01:47
the approach to the station features a
00:01:49
small garden
00:01:50
and there's even a static steam
00:01:52
locomotive dating back to the Yugoslav
00:01:54
era
00:01:55
the rest of the station is accessed by
00:01:57
use of stairs though don't worry lifts
00:02:00
are available too up here you can find a
00:02:03
gallery area but I'd personally call
00:02:05
this more of a museum there's so much
00:02:08
information on the railways here
00:02:09
including a few artifacts and Railway
00:02:11
paraphernalia of course there are plenty
00:02:13
of pictures too so if you're interested
00:02:15
in learning about the railways then be
00:02:17
sure to plan extra time here
00:02:19
just be onto the gallery room there's an
00:02:21
open balcony which during weather like
00:02:23
this provides a great view over the
00:02:25
station 4 Court
00:02:29
[Music]
00:02:31
back inside the station we can find a
00:02:34
children's play area for families to use
00:02:36
while awaiting their book to train
00:02:38
and a small comfortable waiting room
00:02:40
with TV
00:02:42
lastly there's a covid-19 info room for
00:02:46
some reason [Music]
00:02:48
meals are not provided on the train
00:02:50
today but the station does have a
00:02:52
restaurant
00:02:53
I didn't see any food though just plenty
00:02:56
of alcohol
00:02:58
let's head out to the platform and await
00:03:00
my Train's arrival
00:03:03
the first thing you'll notice here is
00:03:05
that the station isn't quite finished
00:03:07
the High-Speed Rail Project in Serbia is
00:03:10
still under construction with only the
00:03:12
short section of line I'll be traveling
00:03:13
on today presently in operation
00:03:16
this part of the route runs from
00:03:18
Belgrade Serbia's Capital City here to
00:03:20
the City of Novi Sad the country's
00:03:22
second largest
00:03:23
an intermediate stop is made in the
00:03:25
suburb of Novi biograd in the future the
00:03:28
line will operate onwards to subotitsa
00:03:30
at the north of the country it is then
00:03:32
planned for trains to cross the border
00:03:34
into Hungary and run to Budapest finally
00:03:36
reconnecting the European capitals after
00:03:38
the service was temporarily stopped in
00:03:40
early 2019.
00:03:42
and hourly Services provided on the
00:03:44
route
00:03:45
I'm waiting for the 1536 arrival which
00:03:48
will then form the 1600 departure down
00:03:50
to biograd centaur
00:03:53
Serbia is a digraphic country meaning
00:03:55
that it uses two different alphabets
00:03:57
simultaneously
00:03:59
whilst this definitely makes it easier
00:04:01
for a foreign tourist it was also really
00:04:03
interesting to see signage in Cyrillic
00:04:05
and Latin
00:04:07
anyway here comes my train from Belgrade
00:04:10
this is one of just three stuntler kiss
00:04:13
units built for survey of Oz the
00:04:15
national operator of the country
00:04:20
the four car units are exceptionally
00:04:22
similar to the ones used by a vest Barn
00:04:24
in Austria and Deutsche Bahn in Germany
00:04:27
in fact they were part of a follow-on
00:04:29
order to this Fleet which enabled a
00:04:31
speedy delivery
00:04:32
the trains were ordered in April 2021
00:04:35
and entered service less than a year
00:04:37
later in March 2022
00:04:39
these Services named Soko with a smart
00:04:42
brand to accompany it Soko means Falcon
00:04:45
in Serbian a reference to the service's
00:04:47
high speed
00:04:49
these trains are fully accessible even
00:04:51
featuring a sliding step for level
00:04:53
boarding
00:04:54
and I'm sure I don't even need to
00:04:56
explain why that's such a massive change
00:04:58
to other trains in the region
00:05:04
anyway let's get on board
00:05:06
I'm traveling in first class today which
00:05:08
is located on the top deck of coach 4.
00:05:11
this is an a two plus one seating layout
00:05:13
as you'd expect
00:05:15
we'll take a look at second class later
00:05:17
on in the video
00:05:19
I'll be traveling in seat number 15. a
00:05:22
rear-facing window seat
00:05:28
by the way I was making this journey
00:05:30
with a friend and the seat allocation
00:05:32
system gave us this seat and this seat
00:05:35
not very convenient but thankfully other
00:05:37
passengers were okay with swapping so we
00:05:39
could sit next to each other
00:05:43
as we departure of your side on time add
00:05:45
1600 let's take a look at today's route
00:05:49
today's route takes us on a simple
00:05:50
southeasterly ride across the northern
00:05:52
part of Serbia comprising entirely of
00:05:54
brand new high-speed track
00:05:57
the journey is scheduled to take 36
00:05:59
minutes to cover the 76 kilometers or
00:06:01
about 47 miles
00:06:05
leaving Novi Sad we can catch a glimpse
00:06:07
of the construction work taking place
00:06:09
it's clear that the future for Railways
00:06:11
in Serbia is looking bright
00:06:15
[Music]
00:06:17
we cross over the river Danube one of
00:06:20
Europe's longest rivers that traverses
00:06:22
10 countries on its way to the Black Sea
00:06:24
[Music]
00:06:26
with such a short journey ahead of us
00:06:29
it's time to take a look at the interior
00:06:31
first class on the Soco consists of just
00:06:34
24 seats here on the top deck
00:06:36
they are presented very nicely with a
00:06:38
smart leather design
00:06:40
there's not too much in the way of
00:06:42
padding here but the ergonomics are
00:06:44
really good this made for a comfortable
00:06:47
Journey
00:06:48
the headrest is also Pleasant and has
00:06:50
large wings for resting on
00:06:52
all seats get a pair of adjustable
00:06:54
armrests which are very comfortable
00:06:56
thanks to their padding
00:06:58
beneath these you can find the controls
00:07:01
for the individual reading lights these
00:07:03
being found beside the headrest
00:07:06
there's also a single European style
00:07:08
socket for each passenger located
00:07:10
betwixtiege seat
00:07:12
personally I found the forced upright
00:07:15
posture of the seats really unpleasant
00:07:17
thankfully a great amount of recliners
00:07:19
available adjusted by pushing this
00:07:21
button and sliding forwards
00:07:23
foreign
00:07:26
it doesn't take long before we're up to
00:07:27
our maximum speed of 200 kilometers an
00:07:30
hour this part of the journey is spent
00:07:32
alongside the river Danube with the
00:07:33
other side of it being home to the kovil
00:07:35
scope
00:07:37
Nature Reserve
00:07:40
[Music]
00:07:52
legroom here on the soccer is very
00:07:54
generous with plenty of room to stretch
00:07:56
out
00:07:58
note that this is considerably reduced
00:08:00
if you choose to recline your seat
00:08:03
the seat in front of you hosts a storage
00:08:05
net where you can put smaller items
00:08:08
above this there's a very well-sized
00:08:10
seat back table
00:08:14
both first class and second class have
00:08:16
an at-seat snacks and drink service
00:08:18
albeit at an extra charge
00:08:21
to Avail of this simply flag down a
00:08:23
member of staff and let them know what
00:08:25
you want I went for a cup of hot
00:08:27
chocolate and I've got to say it was
00:08:28
some of the best I've ever had
00:08:31
this costs 180 Serbian Dinars which is
00:08:34
pretty good value for money too
00:08:39
our journey continues through the
00:08:40
Serbian Countryside the scenery might
00:08:43
not be anything too special compared to
00:08:45
what the country can offer further south
00:08:46
but it's still a relaxing Journey
00:08:48
however the speed is unlike anything
00:08:51
else as with the exception of a very few
00:08:53
short sections in neighboring Croatia
00:08:55
Railways in the Balkans are often just a
00:08:57
fraction of the speed in fact this is
00:09:00
the previous train that used to operate
00:09:01
on the Novi status to Belgrade route
00:09:03
these brutal Soviet trains were built in
00:09:05
the 1980s and the less said about their
00:09:08
battered Interiors the better
00:09:11
anyway let's go and have a look around
00:09:13
to the rest of the train
00:09:15
plenty of toilets can be found
00:09:17
throughout the consist and curiously
00:09:19
these are gender-specific
00:09:26
we're in great condition as you'd expect
00:09:28
for a new train
00:09:29
they even featured a urinal in the men's
00:09:32
room at least
00:09:34
they featured both soap and disinfectant
00:09:36
which were both working fine
00:09:39
there is of course also water and a hand
00:09:42
dryer is provided too
00:09:48
coach 2 is where you'll find the
00:09:50
wheelchair accessible toilet as well as
00:09:52
dedicated wheelchair spaces
00:09:56
by the gangway in this Carriage there's
00:09:58
a catering area
00:10:00
on the other operators of these trains
00:10:02
you can use vending machines here but on
00:10:04
Soco it is simply a storage and
00:10:06
preparation area for the atseat service
00:10:10
one more thing these Trends are fitted
00:10:12
with free Wi-Fi no sign up is needed so
00:10:16
you can just connect straight away
00:10:18
these speeds were fairly good too
00:10:23
despite being a High Speed Line the
00:10:25
route still has a few intermediate
00:10:27
stations
00:10:28
this is Tara Passover a town with a
00:10:31
population of roughly 65 000 people
00:10:35
stations like this are not served by
00:10:37
high-speed soccer trains instead having
00:10:40
a local service running every hour or
00:10:42
two
00:10:44
as we enter batayunitsa and pass through
00:10:46
its flying Junction this is a sign we're
00:10:48
entering the city of Belgrade
00:10:53
patayinitza is the outer limit of
00:10:54
belgrade's commuter rail network named
00:10:57
BG Falls
00:10:58
still operated with those ancient Soviet
00:11:01
trains that formerly ran on the Novi Sad
00:11:03
route
00:11:05
not long after we see zemun Depot the
00:11:07
maintenance base for the modern Stadler
00:11:09
Fleet in Serbia
00:11:11
though of course no Railway Depot in the
00:11:13
Balkans would be complete without a few
00:11:15
burnt out wrecks
00:11:18
our presence in the outskirts of
00:11:20
Belgrade as a parent now as the busy
00:11:22
roads and tower blocks come into view
00:11:24
[Music]
00:11:27
the train starts slowing as we approach
00:11:29
our only intermediate stop today
00:11:32
this is Novi biograd which translates as
00:11:35
new Belgrade
00:11:37
it's taken the form of belgrade's
00:11:39
business district having started
00:11:40
Construction in 1948 as a planned city
00:11:43
anyway we're now just a few minutes away
00:11:45
from our destination so let's talk about
00:11:47
how much this journey cost
00:11:49
I bought a one-way first class ticket at
00:11:51
a cost of just 380 Serbian Dinars
00:11:55
this is incredible value for money the
00:11:57
soccer service offers Comfort speed
00:11:59
frequency and service so to get all of
00:12:02
that for such a low cost is truly
00:12:04
fantastic great job
00:12:14
[Music]
00:12:15
the last part of our journey sees us
00:12:18
crossing the river Sava just meters away
00:12:20
from its Confluence with the river
00:12:21
Danube
00:12:23
we are currently heading towards
00:12:25
belgrade's news station the
00:12:26
controversial biograd Center
00:12:29
the station has received criticism for
00:12:31
its poor location with almost no
00:12:33
transport connections despite being
00:12:35
located fairly far from the center
00:12:38
locals are understandably also not a fan
00:12:40
of the fact the station is still not
00:12:42
even close to being finished despite
00:12:44
construction having started over 15
00:12:46
years ago
00:12:49
a rival here is on time at 16 36.
00:12:57
I've got to say I was thoroughly
00:12:59
impressed with Serbia's soccer service
00:13:01
it's a fast way to get around with
00:13:03
comfortable trains so I can't wait to
00:13:05
see this offering expanded further in
00:13:07
the country and even across borders
00:13:10
but as always let me know what you
00:13:12
thought of Soko in the comments section
00:13:14
and for a look at my 10 hour late
00:13:16
Journey aboard Serbia's stunning
00:13:17
overnight train then click up here now
