00:00:24
hi everyone my name is emma i'm one of
00:00:26
the owners of tenerife horse rescue
00:00:28
and i want to say a really big thank you
00:00:30
for all of the support we experienced on
00:00:32
dory's story i want to take this moment
00:00:34
to explain a bit more about her story
00:00:36
her legacy and answer many questions
00:00:39
that we had on the last video
00:00:43
[Music]
00:00:50
okay the first thing i'm going to tell
00:00:51
you is you might hear some strange odd
00:00:53
noises throughout this video we're just
00:00:55
recording in our kitchen and there's
00:00:57
animals everywhere cats and dogs so they
00:01:00
might every now and then such as this
00:01:02
and start making noises
00:01:04
but that's where we are we welcome you
00:01:06
to our animal secretary
00:01:09
so on the very first point that i want
00:01:11
to get across is a comment or a question
00:01:13
that we had really often
00:01:15
is
00:01:16
why did we let
00:01:19
her suffering that's how people were
00:01:21
feeling that said how do we extend her
00:01:23
suffering
00:01:24
which really means
00:01:26
why did we not immediately put her to
00:01:28
sleep
00:01:29
we call this the last cap last act of
00:01:31
kindness and it's actually something we
00:01:33
do quite regularly here
00:01:34
because having horses on this island is
00:01:37
incredibly expensive
00:01:39
and quite often
00:01:41
well the laws and regulations are not on
00:01:43
the side of the horses but we will get
00:01:45
onto this later but quite often horses
00:01:48
do just get abandoned and they are
00:01:51
they just come to us in this condition
00:01:53
and so it is something we do such as
00:01:55
previous horses like darth zingero maybe
00:01:57
you've followed our story if not you can
00:01:59
see these from
00:02:00
before but with dory
00:02:03
it was a little bit different when she
00:02:05
came to us we expected to i had all
00:02:07
intention to go collect her bring her to
00:02:09
us and let her leave this um leave this
00:02:12
world peacefully and dignified however
00:02:15
from the second she got off that trailer
00:02:17
she was fighting she had so much fight
00:02:20
and so much enthusiasm for life
00:02:23
despite all of the suffering and the
00:02:25
pain she was in she
00:02:27
really
00:02:28
was happy and i know that's going to
00:02:30
seem like a hard thing to believe but
00:02:32
i've been around horses long enough that
00:02:35
sometimes you can just tell and she
00:02:36
wanted a chance so we didn't make this
00:02:39
decision lightly we worked with all the
00:02:41
volunteers we spoke to the vets the best
00:02:42
vets on the island
00:02:44
and we made a decision that we will
00:02:46
continue to give her a chance let her
00:02:48
try as long as it was going in the right
00:02:50
direction
00:02:51
so this is exactly what we did we had an
00:02:54
amazing team of volunteers and they
00:02:56
stayed with her throughout the night
00:02:58
through every hour she was not on her
00:02:59
own for a second we tried everything we
00:03:02
could with all different foods but
00:03:04
ultimately
00:03:06
in the end she could not get enough
00:03:08
energy from her food from what she could
00:03:10
get in and this is from years of her
00:03:12
breaking um from her broken jaw you can
00:03:15
find out all about this on the previous
00:03:17
video of dory
00:03:19
but this this video is to explain not
00:03:22
about her suffering but about how we can
00:03:24
use her legacy fight to change and go
00:03:27
forward so every animal that we rescue
00:03:29
every case is totally different and we
00:03:32
don't have a you know one answer fits
00:03:34
all we will we will like i think we
00:03:36
expected to take her to put her down
00:03:38
immediately but we saw there was a
00:03:40
chance
00:03:41
will be a very very small chance and
00:03:43
unfortunately it didn't pay off this
00:03:44
time however we will look at every
00:03:47
animal differently and we will work with
00:03:49
any of the resources and all of the
00:03:51
professionals we can
00:03:53
to do the very best we can for each
00:03:55
animal
00:03:56
so another comment or a question that we
00:03:58
got quite often
00:03:59
was why did we not give her a drip why
00:04:01
did we not tube feed her and a few
00:04:03
different
00:04:04
medical ideas
00:04:06
and
00:04:07
i would get to the point
00:04:09
of why
00:04:10
is
00:04:11
long story short island life we are on a
00:04:14
small island a small spanish island with
00:04:16
limited resources we work as close as we
00:04:19
can with the vets and they do everything
00:04:20
they can however we don't have access to
00:04:23
everything that you might find in in
00:04:25
mainland spain even main countries back
00:04:28
where i'm from in the uk what i'm ex
00:04:30
used to and have experienced with horses
00:04:32
in the past
00:04:33
we can't do all of these things so we
00:04:35
tried all of the options that were
00:04:37
available to us
00:04:38
and this is a problem not just for dory
00:04:40
but so many of the rescues that we have
00:04:43
so many have complicated things do you
00:04:45
know at this moment
00:04:47
we um on the island we cannot even test
00:04:49
for ulcers
00:04:50
and this is quite a regular thing that's
00:04:52
coming up with our horses due to the way
00:04:54
that horses are fed on this island
00:04:56
and for example this is something we can
00:04:58
try quite easily but here we can't so
00:05:01
things we take for granted back home we
00:05:03
can't always do here so we have to try
00:05:05
our best we have to get resourceful and
00:05:09
this might be
00:05:10
different to what viewers
00:05:13
certainly me where i learned everything
00:05:14
before
00:05:15
expect but we can only do what is
00:05:18
available for us on the island so many
00:05:20
of you watching this video or watching
00:05:22
the previous video or any of our videos
00:05:24
from our horse rescues would maybe be
00:05:27
wondering why were the owners not
00:05:28
charged
00:05:30
why were they not reported um
00:05:33
people say things like they should have
00:05:35
this done to them or they should be
00:05:39
you know
00:05:40
in prison whatever
00:05:41
yes i 100 agree however again this is
00:05:45
this is what we have to deal with here
00:05:47
this is island life we have to work
00:05:49
around the laws here and the laws are
00:05:52
not hugely in favor of the animals
00:05:55
there is talk about this changing but
00:05:57
this is a long topic and i can go into
00:05:59
that on another video if you're
00:06:00
interested
00:06:01
but for now we can only do with what the
00:06:04
law supports
00:06:06
and if the horse has
00:06:08
food has water and it has a shelter
00:06:12
then there's not a huge
00:06:14
lot we can do
00:06:15
so
00:06:16
yes it is incredibly painful and this is
00:06:18
something we have to deal with every day
00:06:21
we watch as the person who is doing this
00:06:23
to these animals just continues to live
00:06:26
their normal life they don't think
00:06:28
anything of it they continue to go home
00:06:30
have a cup of tea their
00:06:32
animal has just been removed and taken
00:06:33
away from them and it leaves people like
00:06:35
us people like you who are donating
00:06:38
towards this to make this possible all
00:06:40
our volunteers who stay up day and night
00:06:43
helping her
00:06:44
leaves them suffering and then picking
00:06:46
up the pieces and then even if we can't
00:06:48
save these animals then it
00:06:51
down to us to pay for for the um
00:06:54
humane euthanasia for us for that last
00:06:57
act of kindness each last act of
00:06:59
kindness costs us around 600 euros i say
00:07:02
us it costs you we rely on your
00:07:04
donations so
00:07:06
the whole system
00:07:08
is not right but all we can do is
00:07:10
continue to fight in the right direction
00:07:13
so
00:07:14
on that topic about the owners being
00:07:16
charged and things like this and
00:07:17
fighting for change
00:07:20
it's i explained about this in the
00:07:21
previous video and i can touch on it now
00:07:24
it's quite often that they are not bad
00:07:26
people the people that we rescue dory
00:07:30
from or we've rescued previous animals
00:07:31
from
00:07:32
it's not even that they're bad people
00:07:34
and this is what makes it so difficult
00:07:36
it's either ignorance or lack of
00:07:38
education that's all they know
00:07:40
and so often when we put pictures up of
00:07:43
these animals all the stories up people
00:07:45
just comment so many times saying owners
00:07:47
must be charged owners must be charged
00:07:49
report it report it and actually yes but
00:07:53
we don't need to concentrate on this
00:07:54
let's concentrate on what we can do
00:07:56
that's not going to change anything this
00:07:58
animal has already suffered and we're
00:08:00
already going to change we've saved her
00:08:02
we will continue to fight and save more
00:08:04
but we need to fight
00:08:06
for bigger change we can continue to
00:08:08
rescue
00:08:09
this one horse and change the life of
00:08:11
that one horse but we want to change the
00:08:13
life of horses and that has to be bigger
00:08:16
we need to get bigger we need to create
00:08:18
a voice for people to listen we need to
00:08:20
create something
00:08:22
to help with education so people know
00:08:25
people only do what they know for
00:08:27
example dory they did what they thought
00:08:29
was right for her now i don't know why
00:08:32
necessarily they thought that was right
00:08:34
but this is what they learned she was in
00:08:35
a clean stable she had clean water every
00:08:38
day she even had new shoes on because
00:08:40
they thought that's what they had to do
00:08:42
to care for this animal
00:08:44
so yes we can complain and say they need
00:08:46
to be reported but that's going to do
00:08:47
nothing we need to fight stronger to
00:08:50
change the laws so we need to
00:08:52
fight bigger get a bigger voice and
00:08:53
people will listen this is why our
00:08:55
future plans we intend to work with
00:08:58
schools
00:08:59
you know help to
00:09:00
a future generation so they can learn
00:09:03
animal welfare sustainable living this
00:09:05
type of thing but again i'm touching on
00:09:07
something which can be another video we
00:09:09
can tell you more about our future plans
00:09:11
but right now we want to concentrate on
00:09:13
dory's story her legacy and how if we
00:09:16
fight together if you follow our story
00:09:18
like us on our social media pages it
00:09:21
might not seem like you're doing
00:09:22
anything but it does it creates our
00:09:25
platform to make it bigger so we can
00:09:27
stand united to fight for something
00:09:30
make the change help more animals like
00:09:32
dory have all of these other animals
00:09:34
that we have here if it wasn't for
00:09:36
people like you a platform like this the
00:09:38
volunteers we have to keep continuing to
00:09:40
grow together to we are stronger if we
00:09:43
are together we might not have been here
00:09:45
very long only a couple of years in
00:09:47
but we have already managed to change
00:09:49
the life of so many animals and i want
00:09:51
to leave you with some footage of some
00:09:53
of the happy animals that we have here
00:09:54
some of the happy stories so again thank
00:09:56
you so much for watching and enjoy
