Present
00:00:10
This is Russia.
00:00:12
This country is the biggest one in the world,
00:00:14
with a great variety of different folk groups living on its territory.
00:00:17
In the North, along the coast of the White Sea,
00:00:20
there live the Pomors.
00:00:21
The capital of the North-end is the old city of Arkhangelsk,
00:00:25
the first Russian sea-port.
00:00:27
That was where the famous polar expeditions set off
00:00:31
to their journeys to explore northern sea-routes
00:00:34
and discover new lands.
00:00:36
Since old times Arkhangelsk has been called the gate to Russia.
00:00:40
That’s where the merchants from England, Holland,
00:00:42
Denmark, Germany, brought their goods as early as in the XVII century.
00:00:47
To make the trade go better
00:00:49
they built the big market – Bolshoy Gostiny Dvor,
00:00:52
today the local history museum.
00:00:56
The northern architects knew how to build
00:00:58
for good using only stone and wood.
00:01:00
The wooden houses in the north were built
00:01:02
so spacious and solid that a horse with a cart
00:01:08
could easily go up to the barn.
00:01:13
One did not need to be afraid of cold in such a house,
00:01:16
though this harsh land is known to be the birthplace of the famous Russian winter.
00:01:20
The land under snow looks like clean white canvas.
00:01:23
How can one help not becoming an artist!
00:01:25
Skillful northern craftsmen painted on crockery,
00:01:28
chests and spinning wheels.
00:01:30
While for Christmas they made special kind of gingerbread - kozulyas,
00:01:34
which also were decorated with the colored and snow-white glaze.
00:01:38
The beauty of the northern land was portrayed
00:01:41
by a great Arkhangelsk artist, writer and traveler,
00:01:45
Stepan Grigorievich Pisakhov.
00:01:47
He left us remarkable Pomor fairy tales,
00:01:50
each one like a precious gem.
00:02:56
I started making up
00:02:57
and telling stories a while ago,
00:02:59
rarely putting them down.
00:03:01
My grandfather was a storyteller.
00:03:03
Leonty was his name.
00:03:05
People said he was a great fabulator;
00:03:07
what he told was always fitly spoken,
00:03:09
always in place.
00:03:11
I regret to say, I didn’t happen to know grandpa Leonty
00:03:13
or hear his fairy tales though.
00:03:17
While working at a fairy-tale,
00:03:19
the memory restores some particular phrases,
00:03:21
proverbs and words.
00:03:23
Such as: How hot-tempered you are!
00:03:26
Might burn my hand if touch you.
00:03:29
Or as one young girl, a visitor from Pinega,
00:03:31
spoke about her life:
00:03:33
In the morrow my mummy was there,
00:03:35
waking me up, and me just hurry-up sleeping!
00:04:01
I met Semyon Malina back in 1928.
00:04:07
He lived in the village and was fond
00:04:09
of telling stories about his troubled childhood.
00:04:12
At our parting he told me how he and his grandfather “Travelled over Carpathians in a ship”
00:04:17
and “How the Rozka-dog caught wolves”.
00:04:21
In honor of the memory of all nameless northern storytellers,
00:04:24
the clansmen and fellow-countrymen of mine,
00:04:27
I tell my tales on behalf of Semyon Malina.
00:04:50
Based on the stories by Stepan Pisakhov.
00:04:53
Nalim Malynich (Malina’s Blue Ling)
00:04:58
This was a long time ago, in olden times.
00:05:05
At that time I hadn’t yet seen what parades be like.
00:05:11
One winter there was a big fair,
00:05:14
with a parade on the Main Square.
00:05:30
They brought soldiers, canons.
00:05:35
Many people came over to see, so did I.
00:06:01
Too much fuss, so I went to the fence,
00:06:05
sat down and took thought.
00:06:12
In a while I saw all the canons turned in my direction.
00:06:16
I sat on calmly – no doubt, those are blank charged, I thought.
00:06:21
Suddenly the canons fired.
00:06:23
Something snatched me and threw me over the fence and away.
00:06:28
Gave me a twiddle and then banged my feet hard against the ice.
00:06:35
Going down
00:06:36
and saw different kinds of fish sleeping.
00:06:39
As much fish as you can imagine.
00:06:41
The deeper – the bigger.
00:06:49
On the very bottom I ran across the most huge blue ling,
00:06:53
or nalim, as we say, sleeping tightly.
00:06:56
As I came, he woke up, rushed to the ice-hole
00:07:06
and flew directly to the Main Square,
00:07:09
where the fair was.
00:07:51
When the nalim heard the harmonica playing,
00:07:54
he began to dance.
00:08:25
The people laughed and threw money into the hat.
00:08:35
All of sudden the village constable appeared.
00:08:41
When he saw the nalim he said:
00:08:43
This blue ling would work well for a fish-soup,
00:08:46
while his liver would make some really good paste.
00:08:50
Take this fish to where I show you.
00:08:51
But I said: Your constable excellency,
00:08:54
this fish is not for sale. It is rather a dog,
00:08:58
since it can both dance and serve me well.
00:09:01
He said: Why, then who gave you permission to dance on the Main Square?
00:09:08
You either do what I tell or I’ll send both of you to Siberia.
00:09:12
There was nothing for it, so we had to go.
00:09:27
At his house he gave me one silver ruble
00:09:30
for the blue ling and told his lady-cook
00:09:33
to take him to the pantry.
00:10:05
But my dear nalim-friend jumped out
00:10:09
of the window and followed me.
00:10:10
Didn’t I rejoice?
00:10:12
Then I decided to teach the constable a lesson.
00:10:25
Seeing the nalim again the constable stood dumbfounded:
00:10:28
This other blue ling would suit my appetite just well!
00:10:33
Then he gave me another ruble
00:10:35
and the lady-cook took the fish to the pantry.
00:10:38
But the nalim again jumped out of the window
00:10:41
and went straight back to me.
00:11:05
I put a chain over my nalim
00:11:07
and walked him along the street like a dog.
00:11:11
They didn’t let us in into a tram though –
00:11:13
the conductress asked for a stamped paper
00:11:16
proving that the blue ling was not a fish,
00:11:18
but a hunting dog.
00:11:20
Well and good, we walked home just fine.
00:11:23
When home, I put an old dough trough
00:11:25
full of water inside the kennel
00:11:27
and set my nalim there.
00:11:30
Upon my door then I put a writing:
00:11:33
“Beware of banling!”
00:11:39
Then I drank my fill of tea and sat by the window
00:11:43
to show off, cupped my chin in hands
00:11:48
and made up a name for my new gate-keeper –
00:11:52
“Nalim Malinych”.
